Etsy Finds: It's Never Too Late...

...To buy (or request) a clock. On a recent trip home, my parents pawned a cheap mantle clock off on me. One C battery and a muzak melody later, I understood why, and in my intention of trashing the big, dumb thing, I destroyed it. But out of the pieces, I made a picture frame and a new clock - using just the hands, the motor, and an Uncle Sam poster (the hands are at the tip of his pointer finger). I had a friend slap a frame around it, I hung it up and felt better about trashing the gifted mantle piece.

After all this, I found IMOTIME, who can upcycle yo momma into a clock. Just look at the variety.

Featured Buyer: Kathy Malone of Brooklyn Indie Market

Kathy Malone, aka fofolle, has been creating tangible links between the offline and online worlds of Etsy. We invited her to be this week's Featured Buyer and asked her to highlight some of her favorite Brooklyn sellers, thus showing us her personal Shop Local.

Hi! My name is Kathy Malone (aka fofolle) and I am a designer and market organizer. I'd had a deep desire to be able to Shop Local, so I took matters into my own hands. I opened up a weekly-weekend indie designer market in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn called Brooklyn Indie Market.

I think the best ideas come from looking and listening to what’s around your immediate environment. I was meeting a lot of independent designers like myself who needed more selling opportunities. I was also starting to hear a lot about Etsy; in a way, I feel like we are all growing up together! The online made the offline possible: it’s a marvelous time to be doing what we are doing.

Brooklyn Indie Market is a collective of fashion and product designers providing a connection between emerging designers and shoppers, boutiques, stylists, personal shoppers and the press. Our aim is to connect one another, as well as the greater New York public, to our weekend Brooklyn market, events, showcases, trunk shows, workshops, and related resources. We also welcome non-New York area designers who are interested in our mission.

We launched the Brooklyn Indie Market website and list serve as a joint venture among independent Brooklyn-based designers to share information, learn from each other's small business challenges and to inspire and foster a community of creativity and authenticity. Our designers converge under the red and white striped tent and kiosks offering the public a first glimpse of the many new names in design.

We are on a brief hiatus until the spring so we can work on our new lines, so check back with us either as a seller or lover of all things handmade!

Etsy Finds: Taking Time to Make Time…

Hopefully, all of your holiday shopping/crafting has been completed: if not, I pity you. So what’s next on the horizon? 2008, of course! Now, I am personally not one for making resolutions, but after all of the holiday hype has wound down, it seems as though everyone begins thinking about time. The year that has passed and the ones to come, and so on and so forth. I can’t think of a more stylish and unique way to mark the passage of time than with this modern wall clock. I love its clean lines and the fact that you can customize it to suit the décor of your home. I’m also a big fan of functional art pieces like this. In case you’re wondering, this project has been seven years (!) in the making, according to buttoncollective. It is well worth the wait.

For those of you who are more concerned with the passing of days and months, I also found some snazzy calendars from maxandbella, SureAsBlue, and valentinadesign that would make great additions to wherever it is that you find yourself staring off into space the most in 2008.

Etsy Finds: Cuckoo for cuckoo clock!

There's nothing I like better than a good idea, and this clock takes the cuckoo cake! I don't think either me or my kitty could stand the nusance of a REAL cuckoo clock, but this lil guy has that clean designy feel I love...turned into a practical, yet humorous wall clock. The folks over at the decoylab have Gocco on lock down. Keep it up, y'all!

Here's a holiday shopping tip:

Whenever I'm not sure what I'm looking for on Etsy, I search for random words like "fuzzy" or "glitter" or "insane." I always get lots of interesting results.

Maybe if I had this awesome clock from twistedtime, I wouldn't be late to work so much? Or maybe I would just stay home and watch the hypnotizing movement of this vintage-record-turned-timepiece all day long.

If I don't buy it for myself, you should get it for your favorite geeky loved one, or someone you'd like to hypnotize. Or check out the other clock in this shop for an awesome Hebrew version. "Have a Happy Hypnotique Hannukah!"

In this day and age of deadlines and dates, everyone needs to know what time it is. After all, time controls us and tells us where to be. So if you are like me, you will need to know what time it is in practically every room of your house. I bet you are wondering what time it is at this very moment...right?! Well, clearly it's TIME to buy a clock! I am a huge fan of the GEEKERY category, and while searching through it for the latest gadgets and coolest items, I came upon today's Etsy Find and thought you should know about it. So check it out!

Oldies but Goodies: ClocksByArty

Arty showed up at the Labs after reading a piece about us in Newsday in his native Long Island. We gave him a tour and were totally inspired when he started telling us about his energetic "retirement."

We did a short interview with Arty to accompany the video we made with him.

The Storque: What is your name? How old are you? Where are you from?

My name is Arthur Moskowitz and I am 81 years old or young. I was born in Brooklyn, New York.

The Storque: How did you first hear about Etsy, and what is your shop name?

My wife Doris, who is also 81, noticed an article about Etsy in Newsday, and showed it to me. I thought that it might be a good outlet for me to sell some of my clocks. Also, my shop name is "Clocks By Arty."

The Storque: Why did you decide to get involved with Etsy?

I met some of the people at Etsy and found them to be very nice. Also, I found the fees to be quite reasonable.

The Storque: Are you retired? What was your previous profession?

I retired from full time sales work to two days a week in 1988 and have been working that way to this day.

The Storque: How long have you been crafting? What do you make?

Two years ago, I decided that I was sitting around too much. Also, I never thought of myself as artistic. However, one day it came to me that I might like to make clocks. I started by putting some ideas on paper. Then I kept designing clock after clock. I then made clock after clock and gave them to everybody in the family. Then I started to sell them. I use mainly wood and acrylics.

The Storque: Do you use the forums or read the Etsy blog? If not, what would it take for you to start?

I guess I would need a computer. [Arty's son helps him list his items.]

The Storque: Do you participate in any craft fairs in your area? Do you sell your wares anywhere else?

I have not yet sold at craft fairs, but I may give it a try in October.
