The Collectors: My Favourite Dress's Vintage Pyrex Bowls

I just love seeing what folks are collecting. I guess I feel it tells us just a little bit about what inspires them, what they love, and what they choose to surround themselves with in their homes. Today, I'm delighted to present the next in an ongoing series here on The Storque: The Collectors. First published on my own little blog, the rikrak studio, it's 11 and a half quick questions with a wonderful artist on what they're collecting (apart from their art supplies!). Hope you'll just love this vintage kitchenware collection with the charming myfavouritedress.

As our thoughts turn to the upcoming holidaying seasons around the world, our kitchens emerge as our handmaking studios and workshops, where we each combine tradition and creativity to handcraft scrumptious feasts and delicious delights to share with friends and loved ones!

Indeed, cooking and baking are, for me, a wonderful part of the delight of holidaying time, and I thought you might just love a peek at this particular gorgeous collection of vintage kitchenware, which would surely inspire any home chef, and host(ess) as we look forward to the season of entertaining.

Psst: And just in case you’re like me and love the idea of baking, cooking, and entertaining, but it isn’t quite your forte (let’s be honest – I’m a wonderful disaster in the kitchen!) — fear not! Help is near! How about some delectables by the pros!

Who (are you) : Claire of myfavouritedress

What (are you collecting) : pyrex

When (did you start) : This collection here is about 6 years old.

How (many do you have?) : I have around 30-40 here in Vancouver, and a whole lot more in storage at my dad's in Australia.

Where (do you find them) : I find them all at the thrift stores (or op shops) and church sales.

Where (do you keep them) : I keep them in the kitchen. They get used every day.

What (‘s a crazy/interesting story behind one) : I have a friend who often picks me up little things at the thrift store, and one time we were sitting at the kitchen table talking when she casually reaches into her handbag and pulls out a huge butterprint bowl in perfect condition, and hands it to me — "Oh, I found this for you," and keeps on with what she was saying. Like no big deal. She's actually given me some beautiful pyrex and Fire King over the years. She is awesome.

What (piece would you like to add): Dots. I have absolutely no dots. And I love them.

Why (do you love them) : They're beautiful and functional, and they obviously last a long time.

Which (one is your favourite) and why : This tiny little blue bowl that is quite old, but I love the shade of blue and how it has worn away at the top.

What (else do you collect) : I have a pretty ridiculous collection of kitchenware and fabric, but I'd say what I really collect would be records.

Oh, how wonderful! I love how Claire USES her collection in a functional and wonderful way on a daily basis! How splendid! And I adore the ways in which she craftily combines her love of sustainable living in her home and in her own beautiful handcrafted works, too!

So let’s raise a toast: to the kitschy kitchen and all that is created in it! I think my perfect kitchen is like that ideal holiday recipe: You start with tried and true main ingredients, add a handpicked pinch of vintage, a dash of modern, and a teaspoon of eclectic to make something all your own!

Who (are you?): Missy Munday of Boopsiedaisy

What (are you collecting?): Pez Dispensers

When (did you start?): Seven years ago

How (many do you have?): 209 at last count

Where (do you find them) and (do you keep them?): Yard sales, thrift stores, flea markets & souvenir shops. I keep them in our dining room.

What (piece would you like to add?): The two that top my wish list are Snow White and Frankenstein, the original 60's versions.

Why (do you love them?): Besides that they double as delicious, colorful wall candy, they're instantly recognizable as collectible, totally timeless, and seem to beckon back to a time that was simpler.
Plus they spoonfeed you candy.

Which (one is your favorite?): It's sort of a three-way toss-up between Gargamel (for looks), the vintage clown (my rarest) and the vintage witch (which has sentimental value).

What (else do you collect): Too much to list, really, but primarily different editions of Snow White and Alice in Wonderland books, dolls, Wizard of Oz merch, Muppets stuff, vintage valentines and squeak toys, and anything relating to Drew Barrymore.

Like her delicious and fun-filled collection, Missy’s brilliant shop is genuine eye candy for the soul. Just a moment savoring her sweet and sugar-coated, tantalizing and gasp-worthy, rainbow-sprinkled handmade world, promises to banish the grayest day and delight your senses!

Her enchanting and whimsical creations have captured the wide-eyed imagination of many, and it’s with holding-my-breath delight that I tune in on a daily basis to see what fantastical new fairy tales she’s crafted in her vivid life and work. What a joy!

Etsy Finds Decor: Kaleidoscopic Collaboration

This weekend's Get the Look: Decor is inspired by the modern, colorful, art filled home of artist and Rare Device shop owner, Lisa Congdon. Located in the Mission District of San Francisco, Lisa shares her home with her partner Clay Walsh, their dog Wilfredo and two cats named Barry and Margaret.

With two different personal styles, the couple has focused on creating a modern home that harmoniously combines Lisa's colorful collections with Clay's minimalist aesthetic. Their creative compromises have led to a colorful yet calm home, filled with thoughtfully displayed vignettes and beautifully arranged exhibits of the couple's large art collection.

Lisa also runs an amazing shop on Etsy where she sells her original paintings and prints.

What a wonderful time of year! Sunshiney warm afternoons, beloved sweater-weather evenings, and the vivid colors of summer transforming into those sumptuous autumn hues. For me, it’s nature at its loveliest!

This is also the time in the calendar when I look for ways to bring the outdoors indoors, something I know so many of us universally love about interior design. As we cozy up our homes and indoor spaces, this month’s gorgeous bird collection brings the joy of the vibrant woodlands and the spirit of natural history alive inside. Here’s a wonderful collection interview to inspire us.

Who (are you?): Elizabeth of themefragrance
What (are you collecting?): Bird objects  
When (did you start?): Five years ago
How (many do you have?): Lost count!
Where (do you find them?): Antique stores, gifts, Etsy.
Where (do you keep them?): I live in an old brick house in Brooklyn that has six mantelpieces, and I rotate all my collections on them. 
What (piece would you like to add?): Bird prints from Etsy shops (so far I’ve collected prints by geninne and mincingmockingbird) .
Why (do you love them?): You can't have too many! The variety keeps you going!  
Which (one is your favorite?): My lovebird, Buddha (the real one).
What (else do you collect): Antique doll parts, typography blocks, hands, old magazines, perfume bottles, postcards, children’s books.

Like the modern perfumer she is, I love the way Elizabeth’s collection so aptly mixes design and modern handicraft with the natural world. Aren’t the rich and variegated hues of these lovely birds just gorgeous atop the classic white mantles of her brick home? Elizabeth’s brilliant use of color and hand-picked historical elements brings nature indoors not only with her beloved bird collection, but also in her delightfully vibrant shop. Like the splashes of antique history in her collection, Elizabeth’s work builds on the traditional to craft fresh, modern perfumes with enticing organic scents. I just adore her integration of nature in her collections, both in her home and in her shop. Thanks so much for sharing with us, Elizabeth!

The Collectors: Vintage Super 8 Cameras

Who (are you?): Rikkianne (Chakra Pennywhistle)

What (are you collecting?): Vintage Super 8 Cameras

When (did you start?): About 8 or 9 years ago.

How (many do you have?): 23

Where (do you find them?): Local thrifts and antique stores.

Where (do you keep them?): They are placed on a book shelf in my living room.

What(‘s an interesting story behind one?): Lots of them still have film in them! Someday we plan to get a projector and check them out.

What (piece would you like to add?): I want to find one in an odd color.

Why (do you love them?): It is actually a collection that my husband and I share. He loves them just as much as I do.

What (else do you collect?): Vintage Vera Neumann scarves. I have over 300 of them!

Which (camera is your favourite?): This one was my Grandfather’s. My Grandfather loved films. He loved recording and fiddling with all things film related. That camera was one of his treasures.

Etsy Addicts: Top Hearters, Revealed!

As an Etsy addict (yes, I admit it!), I make a point to "heart" any item that catches my fancy, be it for me, as a gift for a friend, to feature here on Etsy's blog, or just because it's an amazing example of craftsmanship that could only be found on Etsy. Today I'm unmasking other Etsy Addicts to reveal some of the top hearters on the site. These Etsy Community members (both buyers and sellers) have collected astounding numbers of Favorites, and they keep them public for your benefit. Here are the interviews we did with these fine folk.

MacraMe's Favorites: 2284 Pages (and Counting)
MacraMe was featured in yaelfran's Shop Local Argentina not long ago.

Why do you heart things on Etsy?
We heart for several reasons: because we love the item, to keep lists of items for our Treasury addiction, as a way of promotion, and we like to encourage new sellers.

Do you actively share your Etsy Favorites with anyone?
Our Favorites are open for everyone to see and we have an Etsy Mini of our Favorites on our blog.

Do you look at or follow other people's Favorites? Would you care to share any of their names?
After almost three years of being on Etsy we don’t follow other people's Favorites, but at the beginning we used the Connections tool as a way to search and browse.

Do you buy a lot of your Favorites? If not, what's the purpose behind bookmarking them?
We have bought on very special occasions. Unfortunately Argentina has an unfavorable exchange rate for making purchases — so we have all those hearts in the hope of someday being able to buy. We bookmarked them also for the reasons we mention before, and, if we hearted them, why un-heart?

You've been on Etsy for some time. What's your favorite thing about the site?
Etsy is full of beautiful things, but our favorite is Treasury. We don’t speak English very well so this tool lets us participate without the necessity of language. We have learned a lot making them, and it helps us to improve our store. Now, with more experience, we have a lot of fun making Treasuries, but the best thing is that it aided us in making friends with wonderful people whom we may never meet in person but whose affection we can still feel.

Another thing we love is the blog, The Storque, not only for the news, but for the old posts as well. We see them as records of the Etsy story. Also we must mention the opportunity of belonging to a Team. We are members of the Etsy in Spanish Team, where we can communicate in Spanish and meet every Friday with our Spanish-speaking comrades in the Chat Rooms. As we said, there are a lot of beautiful things on Etsy!

What are your hopes for Etsy's future?
We hope Etsy has continuity over time and that the economic crisis will be overcome quickly, in order for artists and crafters to be able to continue to develop in a positive way. We understand that Etsy has to evolve. Every day there are more people, more news, advances in technology and trade, but we hope Etsy doesn't lose the home spirit, the flavor of what was done by hand which made Etsy a very special place.

yaelfran's Favorites: 1452 Pages (and Counting)

Why do you heart things on Etsy?
I don't know exactly why, but I LOVE to heart items that catch my attention, and I LOVE to see who hearted me or my own items.

Do you actively share your Etsy Favorites with anyone?
Sometimes, if there is a special item I want to show to my husband or friends. For example, it was my friend's birthday, and I hearted four or five items to share with my other friends. We had decided to buy her a ring from Etsy, so I told my friends to look at my recent Favorites and from there we could choose one to buy.

Do you look at or follow other people's Favorites? Would you care to share any of their names?
ALWAYS. I think it's one of the things I enjoy most at Etsy: looking at my Favorites' Favorites. Of course I'd give you their names! elsita, irisschwarz, knots, iomiss, timssally, polarity, sushipot, prettylittlethieves, kjoo... and so many more.

Do you buy a lot of your Favorites? If not, what's the purpose behind bookmarking them?
No, I like to heart items here because of great photos, wonderful design, excellent composition, but not necessarily to buy them. I just love the idea of sellers knowing their creations are loved!

You've been on Etsy for almost three years. What's your favorite thing about the site?
Since I started, I've been saying the same thing about Etsy: I ADORE how user-friendly Etsy is. I really love the design, it is a pleasure to be a seller here, I enormously enjoy working on Etsy!

What are your hopes for Etsy's future?
I hope Etsy will be better and better every day, improving communication between the community and Admins and keeping honesty and common sense as their most important values.

Earmark's Favorites: 1418 Pages (and Counting)

Why do you heart things on Etsy?
Because I love the items, want to feature an item, want to use an item in a Treasury, must buy it or if I am comparing items that I want/need in the future. Basically, I heart items so I do not lose track of the item/shop.

Do you actively share your Etsy Favorites with anyone?
I put up the Etsy Mini of my Favorites on my blog.

Do you look at or follow other people's Favorites? Would you care to share any of their names?
I guess I do not follow anyone in particular. I look through MANY people's Favorites and I probably follow ThePeachTree's faves the most.

Do you buy a lot of your Favorites? If not, what's the purpose behind bookmarking them?
I do buy items from my Favorites, but I also use my Favorites as more of a wish list. I would love to be able to organize my faves into sections (wish lists, bags, edibles).

You've been on Etsy for almost three years. What's your favorite thing about the site?
Pretty much everything. I think Etsy has opened so many doors and been great at showcasing unique art and handmade goods from around the world. I love that. I have met so many awesome people and companies via Etsy. Without Etsy, it would have taken much longer to get to where we are today, and for that I am forever grateful!

What are your hopes for Etsy's future?
I would love to see some additional third party applications that improve and enhance the Etsy experience. Otherwise I just hope that more people shop on here and purchase stationery from Earmark...ha ha!

Dajellybaby's Favorites: 1823 Pages (and Counting)

Why do you heart things on Etsy?
I usually heart things on Etsy that catch my eye. I do this for several reasons. The first one is because I am planning to purchase that particular item. I often check Etsy quickly throughout the day, and if I spot something that I like, I may not be able to purchase it then and there. Hearting the item ensures that I have easy access to it later, and it means I don't have to remember or record the item or seller details — which is great because I have a terrible memory!

Another reason is because I really like the item and/or the seller's store, and I want to come back to it at a later date. I enjoy browsing the listings of items that I like, and I particularly love browsing the stores of favorite sellers who intrigue me. With a lot of the items that I really like, I enjoy revisiting the listing and having a good look at the item again, the different listing photos, etc. This also sometimes helps me to make up my mind as to whether I want to purchase the item. I find a lot of the pictures and descriptions fantastic and very alluring — it's hard not to fall in love. I often fall in love with the way a seller has marketed their product.

I also heart items or sellers' stores for future reference, for example, ideas for upcoming birthday gifts.

Do you actively share your Etsy Favorites with anyone?
Not really. I have shared the details of the Etsy site itself with others. I have also shared the details of particular Etsy sellers from whom I have purchased items. This usually occurs after people notice an Etsy purchased item and ask where I got it.

Do you look at or follow other people's Favorites? Would you care to share any of their names?
I don't really follow other people's favorites. I have actually only checked out five other people's favorites, and they are five Etsy sellers that I have purchased from in the past. I love these particular sellers, and I really admire their sense of style, their personality, their designs, etc. I thought I might be able to find some really fascinating and intriguing items from their favorites, as they are quite fascinating and intriguing people. They include Monique, a.k.a. ouma; Jessi Taylor, a.k.a. jessitaylor; Christine, a.k.a. BloomStudios; Allison, a.k.a. MmeFortuna and Katie, a.k.a. ktjean.

Do you buy a lot of your Favorites? If not, what's the purpose behind bookmarking them?
I do buy a lot of my favorites, although I think that I bookmark a lot more than I buy. I really wish that it was the other way around! The reason that I think I have so many favorites comes down to wishful thinking. I really love the designs, concepts and ideas of a lot of the items on Etsy, and I have found in the past that if I don't heart an item, I have trouble remembering any details to find it again. I find it's very convenient having a "Favorites section" of my profile.

What's your favorite thing about Etsy?
I love two things actually about the Etsy site. The first is the gorgeous sense of community and the friends that I have made since I joined. The second is the easy access I have to so many amazing and talented artists who handmake and/or collect, recycle and celebrate vintage and homemade goods. If it wasn't for Etsy, I wouldn't have access to these really talented folk. I would still be purchasing mass-produced, store-bought items!

What are your hopes for Etsy's future?
I'd really love to see Etsy continue to grow and blossom, welcoming even more fabulous sellers and items, and for sellers themselves to see a continued rise in new customers and buyers. In spite of any growth, I would really like to see the community side of Etsy continue — where customer service, the sense of trust, friendship and kinship are still paramount. I would really hate to see Etsy become like eBay, where both sellers and buyers can often be exploited. I think Etsy is wonderful and the Etsy site, its team and its sellers deserve every success.

Billing Alert: Updates to Etsy’s Billing System

UPDATE (6/25/09): With the migration to our new credit card processing system complete, some remaining sellers over the next billing period may need to re-enter their credit card information. This is a one time action; you will not need to re-enter your credit card information every month, unless your card expires. Additionally, sellers have the option to pay their bill with PayPal instead of a credit card.

UPDATE (5/8/09): Please be advised that Etsy is now enforcing our policy of revoking selling privileges for accounts that have become two months or more overdue. We are reviewing all seller accounts and any seller in violation of this policy runs the risk of having their selling privileges suspended until such time as overdue accounts are paid in full.

In order to avoid an interruption in Etsy's services, we ask that you make sure you are current in paying your Etsy account balance and that the email address you registered with Etsy is also current.

Etsy relies on its sellers to pay outstanding balances in full and on time each month. Etsy does not currently have the systems in place to allow for installment payments.

Please bear in mind that you may pay your Etsy bill by either PayPal or credit card.

Thank you for being a part of Etsy. We want to let you know about important changes to the way Etsy handles bills for seller fees. Etsy relies on collecting fees from our members in order to continue developing and growing our business. We are improving our billing and collections systems to accommodate our rapid growth.

Here is a quick review of how billing works currently on Etsy: The billing cycle starts on the first day of each month, and Etsy automatically sends you a billing statement by email for the fees accrued in the previous month. You have a grace period of 15 days to pay your bill. To pay your bill, you must sign in to your Etsy account and manually submit your payment by credit card or PayPal. If you have not paid your bill by 12:00 am UTC on 16th day of the same month, your account will be considered overdue. If your account becomes two months overdue your selling privileges may be revoked, and over three months overdue your account may be suspended.

Over the next month, we are moving to a new credit card processing system managed by Chase Paymentech, the industry leader for processing credit card transactions. As a result of this move, if you pay your Etsy seller fees using a credit card, then you may need to re-enter your credit card information at the time you submit payment for your Etsy bill. This is a one-time action; you will not need to re-enter your credit card information again as long as it remains current.

As you might already know, we recently introduced new functionality that allows sellers to pay their Etsy bills with PayPal. As an alternative, you may opt to pay your bill with PayPal if you do not want to re-enter your credit card information after we move over to the new credit card processing system. We know that most sellers on Etsy accept payments from buyers through PayPal, and now with a few clicks you can also pay your Etsy bill via PayPal.

Previously, Etsy only accepted payments of $1.00 USD or more from sellers. Now that we have implemented PayPal as a means to pay Etsy bills, we ask those owing less than $1.00 to pay their balances in a timely manner. For example, if you are billed $0.60, you can now pay $0.60, and you have the option to pay via PayPal or your credit card.

We will keep you informed of upcoming changes to our billing process and will communicate in advance of any major changes taking effect. If you have questions about your Etsy bill, please email billing@etsy.com for personalized assistance.

Etsy Finds Decor: Family Matters

Etsy Finds Vintage: A Beautiful Collection

From an early age, I've always maintained a well-dusted area of little things that bring me happiness. What started with trolls and geodes morphed into dresses from the 1940s, vintage puppets, deer figurines, and more recently, bell jars, antique portrait paintings and quilts. The thrill of the chase has always spurred on my rabid collecting habit, and working at Etsy has only increased the voracity of my vintage addiction.

There's a saying that once you have two of anything, you've started a collection. Today's Vintage Finds are dedicated to collectors, be they past, present or future. Maybe you should start a new display area with velvet paintings of UFOs, vintage toy guns, or lost and forgotten photographs. (All results of my informal collection survey on Twitter!) Why We Make Treasuries: Inspiration and Visual Storytelling

So you counted backwards, did the math, and figured out that with 20 lists on each page you should start paying attention right about...now.

You’ve opened a new browser window and you keep one eye on it while you pretend to be doing other things. 340. Waiting. Watching. 339, 338. The lists tick down, slowly. You’ve got your title copied and ready to be pasted. 337. You’re actively resisting the urge to refresh your browser. 336. You’re second guessing your title, but it’s too late to change it now. 335. You wonder why the expired lists don’t actually disappear once they’ve expired. 334. Third guessing your title. 333. Oh boy, here we go...

You all know what I’m talking about. You’ve all stayed up late to do it, shushing a husband or child who tried to interrupt you at that crucial moment. You’ve probably at least once experienced the agony of defeat due to a bad internet connection. Even after you’ve labored over your choices and made the perfect list, there’s a chance that not so many people will click on your title and take a look before it expires.

So what compels us to make a Treasury list?

I recently asked myself and a few other Etsians this very question, in an effort to verbalize that feeling we get when that magic box appears.

I’m a package/graphic designer and part-time Etsy seller. For me, Etsy is a vehicle for thinking creatively about many things — my store, my brand identity, the value of my time, the value of my artistic creation, refining my skill, coming up with new ideas, being inspired by and in awe of other craftspeople here. Treasuries are a natural extension of the reasons I spend time on Etsy.

I make lots of different kinds of Treasuries: lists that are color-based, visual tributes to my favorite songs, books and movies, interpretations of ideas or sentences that strike me as interesting, and the completely random lists that happen when I have the Treasury open and the box suddenly appears. However, my favorite inspiration is my own memory, and making a Treasury is most often about evoking a very specific instance or event and then assembling a collection of Etsy items that bring that memory into sharper focus.

I like picking a certain date, a family trip, a childhood experience and then building a collection of items around the memory. My amazing mother passed away a few years ago, and she's always on my mind, so there's always some sort of personal reference to her in my Treasury lists. Her name means star in Gujarati, so I often like to find an interesting star item to include. No one gets the reference except me, but that's kind of the point.

This Treasury list is based on a trip I took to India for a cousin's wedding a long time ago... It really did feel like this, very saturated colors and sort of dreamy.

I love Treasuries that hint at a bigger story than the 12 items we’re seeing...a back story, kind of like a Bob Dylan song. I may not have any real idea what he’s singing about (like a story intended for someone else), but he’s always singing about something evocative. Or when a character in a movie picks up the phone. I don’t need to know what they are hearing, I just need to believe that there’s actually someone on the other end of the line.

Certain people have a knack for pulling together collections that convey a layered rich narrative in just a few pieces, and Becky of beckykazana is one of those folks. I am drawn to her very imaginative (and visually stunning) Treasuries, which read like compelling short stories. The Treasuries link to her blog, where she comments on each item and fleshes out the story in greater detail.

Says Becky: “I make Treasuries for many reasons. I love shopping Etsy, and I'm constantly discovering talented sellers that I want everyone else to know about too! If I can't purchase something, perhaps someone else will, and how great is that? I also like the process of making a Treasury. It's very much like creating an online inspiration board that I can share with lots of other people. It usually starts with one amazing item that I love and grows from there.”

As a designer, I’m drawn to Treasuries that just look good! The talented Sue of suezybees curated the gorgeous Treasury pictured above. I asked her how she approaches Treasury-making:
“I always get really excited when I have the chance to make a list! (Maybe I need to get out more?) I see it as designing my own poster and giving other sellers the opportunity to have their work seen. Making a Treasury is a really good way of sharing your special finds with others.“

Sue and Becky both touch on the interesting opportunity that Treasuries give us to promote the work of others, often complete strangers. Maybe this is the best reason to create Treasuries — sellers all know how it feels to see that gold star which tells us we're in one. We can satisfy the creative urge to tell stories and relive memories, all while brightening someone else's day!

The Art of Collecting

Today Lou Sagar, Etsy's resident merchandising consultant, tells us a bit about his passion for collecting. Here's Lou.

As we move into summer here in North America, many of us will be travelling to craft fairs, antique markets, and visiting with family. It is the season for collecting. Over the years, I have found that collecting has been a rewarding complement to my personal love and respect for artists, artisans, and their handmade work. In my own home, I often display my favorite collections — some have secured permanent territory, others are rotated in and out with the seasons. Taking the time to display my collections inspires me to seek new additions, while cultivating my own personal “handmade” life.

If you believe that our homes are a canvas for storytelling as I do, then our collections are tools for the storyteller.

Vintage Shaving Brushes circa 1920s-1960s

Ideas for starting collections come from just about anywhere. We might begin by acquiring a single item or by receiving a memorable handmade gift. Two of my favorite collections are old-fashioned shaving brushes and hand-blown toasting glasses. I love the texture of the glass, the colors, variety of shapes, and the spirit of celebration. As a kid I can remember collecting soda pop bottles. I wanted them to be clean and unscratched. I loved the cultural memorabilia associated with the names of the brands: Stewarts, 7-Up, and Orange Pop.

There are new collectibles being invented every moment. The most common elements, ones which we tend to take for granted in everyday life, are often the sources of our most treasured collections over time. Older objects have a context from their own history — where they come from, what they were used for. Newly made collected objects may have a unique cultural value, but will require the test of time to prove their resonance.

The individual choices we make help reinforce our personal sense of style, and provide us with the joy and fun from adventures in hunting and gathering.

We start a collection because we have been shown how to make a common object resonate in multiple. Some of the most interesting collections in the world begin this way, with the most common of elements: bottle caps, matchbook covers, softballs, keys, teddy bears, etc.

A new collection is birthed when we first display a “grouping of three.” Something magical happens when we create that first “still life” as a vignette on a table, a dresser, or shelf. We actually reveal a part of ourselves. Our personality is expressed through the objects we honor when showing them and sharing their stories with family and guests. How often we refrain from sharing our collections, keeping them hidden, buried in a chest of drawers, or attic space. This summer, I want to encourage you to clean up your collections — handmade or vintage — and energize them with displays, birth new collections, encourage the kids to get involved, and carry the spirit of the “handmade” life with you through the art of collecting.

For me, this is Etsy…and it can be so much fun.

This weekend's Get the Look: Decor is inspired by the German chalet of Hannah Kopacz from Made With Love By Hannah (who actually lives in the heart of downtown Los Angeles). Hannah has created an incredible fantasy land filled with gnomes, mushrooms, cuckoo clocks and vintage figurines that are an accumulation of over twenty years of knick knack and tchotchke collecting. She even made her studio (which is a shed in her backyard) look like a huge cuckoo clock!

Etsy’s Treasury: Finding Focus

Recently, we've decided it's time to revisit the way we utilize and maintain the integrity of our Treasury feature. Below we will walk you through a brief history of the feature, where we find ourselves today and our plans for the Treasury moving forward.

Where we've come from
Upon launching the Treasury on Etsy in August of 2006, our original goals for the feature were to create an interactive place where members could create and share their own featured lists of Etsy items. Over time, it evolved into a community feature, and Etsy staff (“Admins”) would occasionally promote outstanding lists from the Treasury pool to the front page of Etsy. As the Etsy community and Admins have worked together using the Treasury, gathered feedback and discussed the rules for creating lists, a few guidelines for the feature organically evolved. Collectively, with the community's input, a general understanding has developed that the Treasury feature is:

A community space for members to create and share handpicked lists of items on Etsy.
Treasury lists are not intended for self-promotion, but members may add one of their own items to to their handpicked list.
If a list containing an item from the curator’s Etsy shop is promoted to the front page of Etsy, then that one item will automatically be excluded from the front page collection.
Similarly, if a list contains more than one item from a shop, only one item per shop will be included on the front page.
Etsy generally has not changed a curated Treasury list from its original state when promoting it to the front page.

Again, the above guidelines have evolved over time and represent the way Etsy’s Treasury is understood and loved today.

Where we are now
As we've grown, this more relaxed evolution and set of guidelines isn't working as well as it had previously. While the original purpose of the Treasury was a community feature not intended for self-promotion, we realize that by promoting lists to the front page, this creates a sense of competition and leaves room for abuse of the feature. The integrity of the Treasury is something we know is important to each of you – and it’s important to us, too, and so with your help we are taking steps to keep the feature one that can benefit both the community and Etsy as a whole.

Where we are headed
We realize the current set of Treasury guidelines has been shaped as we have grown together and that we have not been as clear as we could have been in laying out concrete, visible guidelines for the feature as it has grown and changed. Moving forward, we are laying out clear guidelines for the Treasury which you will find below. We will actively be upholding these clearly-posted guidelines. Violating Treasury guidelines may result in suspension of privileges and/or account termination.

With this transition, we will also begin using our more focused merchandising themes as a criterion in choosing Treasury lists that are promoted to the front page. Whole lists or partial selections from a list may be promoted. When a partial list is promoted to the front page, we will still be giving credit to the original Treasury list as inspiration. The original list within the Treasury will remain just as the curator created it, even if only a partial selection is promoted to the front page.

Revised Treasury guidelines

Only one Treasury list per person. Do not create lists with multiple accounts at the same time.
Treasury is not intended for personal promotion. Please do not include more than one of your own items.
Etsy may, at times, promote whole or partial selections from a Treasury list to the front page.
This list will expire two days after creation. Bonus time (up to 24 hours) may be randomly added to the lifetime of your list.
Etsy reserves the right to remove Treasury lists at any time.

Wow! The Library of Congress now has a YouTube presence, and there's a growing collection of incredible footage. This particular video comes from the Edison Film Catalog: "Beginning in the late 1880s, Thomas Edison's labs not only built the equipment for filming and projecting films, but produced popular content for the new medium." This particular video is entitled Sioux Ghost Dance. It shows Native American dancers from Buffalo Bill's Wild West show in war paint and costumes. This is the American Indian's first appearance before a motion picture camera. Wow!

The Art of the Egg: Ukrainian Pysanky

I've started a small collection of Ukrainian Easter eggs. I'm moving soon and these little beauties will be the hardest things to pack! They're so beautiful and intricate, with geometric patterns made through a complicated series of wax designs and dye dippings.The eggs — called Pysanky in Ukrainian — have deep, bold colors often seen in Ukrainian embroidery, in contrast to the pastel colors one usually sees in springtime decor. Learn how they're made here (via Make Magazine).

This is one of those traditional crafts that is so meaningful (each pattern has meaning!) — especially around Easter time. CarltonARTfactory, who made the egg pictured above, explains, "The eight-pointed star represents life itself, purity and the Divine Eye or Will of God. The three-leaved images in each corner are periwinkle, which represent eternal love (since periwinkle was the sacred plant of Venus). Lines encircling the egg represent eternity and immortality. The wave adds harmony in motion. There are netted triangles (baskets) which represent motherhood and contained knowledge. On the top and bottom there are ram's horns, which signify manhood and victory."

I hope CarltonARTfactory passes her skill on to the next generation. My husband's family is Ukrainian and I need to be trained by his relatives one of these days. I must admit, I've never been so intimidated by an egg!

An Apology from Etsy's CEO, Maria Thomas

Dear Etsy Sellers,

This is the kind of note CEOs generally don’t enjoy writing. Because, this is the kind of note that says, “We messed up, and we’re sorry.”

Over the weekend, Etsy messed up. We prematurely sent out notices to sellers whose bills we had identified as “overdue.” This overdue notification was a change in our billing process. We did a poor job of fully explaining this change and consistently messaging it across the site and in other communications with our seller community. In addition, the change was poorly timed relative to the March billing cycle and poorly coordinated with our recent introduction of enabling sellers to pay their Etsy fees via PayPal. Introducing PayPal as a payment option for seller fees also allowed us to accept payments of any size, so we simultaneously eliminated the $1.00 minimum payment threshold, whether paid by credit card or PayPal. We now ask those owing less than $1.00 USD to pay their balances in a timely manner, just like other Etsy sellers.

Regrettably, we did not lay all these messages out in an easily digestible form, and we didn’t deliver them to you in a timely and clear way.

I am ultimately responsible for this poor execution, and I apologize. I know that Etsy sellers need clear, consistent, timely communication from Etsy in order to plan your businesses. That’s our goal, and we will all work harder to be more diligent and timely with future announcements affecting all sellers.

I asked Etsy staff to roll back the changes (that is, to go back to the billing policies and process in effect prior to March 14, 2009) until such time as we are able to more thoroughly and consistently email all of you about what we’re doing and why. Let me repeat, we have moved back to the policies and process that were in effect prior to this weekend’s communications about overdue bills. Please note that sellers will still be able to pay your Etsy bills via PayPal, and you will be able to pay your bill even if the balance is below $1.00 USD.

Though I don’t particularly like to have to say Etsy messed up, I do want to set our goals and our missteps in the proper context.

As you’ve heard from us before Etsy is investing a lot of time into establishing a more efficient, scalable and market-based billing and collections system. (Please note: I am referring to the mechanisms by which Etsy sellers are billed and can pay Etsy; I am not referring to systems that enable buyers to pay sellers.)

Changing our collections’ policies is one piece of a larger group of projects intended to improve our overall billing and payment processing infrastructure, including enabling Etsy sellers to pay Etsy fees via PayPal. We also aim to make more efficient and effective our process for collecting overdue accounts.

These goals remain priorities and our recent poor communication should not overshadow this important message: Etsy is making investments in its billing and payment processing infrastructure that will allow Etsy to grow significantly and to provide better services to you.

I have asked Etsy staff to communicate important changes around billing and collections via emails directly to sellers such that any changes to our billing or collection policies can be fully communicated prior to our implementation of such changes. We are working to get the first one of these all-seller messages out in the next week or two. You should expect several emails in the next few months announcing a few positive changes and improvements in our payments processing and billing systems.

Billing Alert: Clarifications to the Billing Collection Process

UPDATE: This article was corrected on March 16, 2009. We have removed the message on the Sign In page about overdue accounts at this time. We have decided to postpone implementing this billing reminder change until later this spring. We will communicate in advance when this will take effect. (The article was originally published on the evening of March 15, 2009.)

Dear sellers,

Beginning at 12:00 am UTC on March 15, 2009 until roughly 4:00 pm UTC, an automated email was sent out to sellers who had not yet paid their Etsy bills. In addition, if those sellers signed in to their Etsy account, they would have seen a similar message on the site. The automated email is a new billing reminder we began using with this month’s billing cycle. By mistake, these overdue notices were sent one day early, as Etsy policy states that a seller has 15 days to submit payment before the account is considered overdue.

We apologize for the confusion caused by the email and the related message on the Sign In page about overdue accounts. We can and will do better to communicate with our seller community. We have made some changes to Etsy billing collection recently that we communicated in December 2008 and again earlier this month, however, the entire process was not clearly communicated. Adding to the confusion, the new reminder email was sent at 12:00 am UTC, which for many sellers in other time zones was still the evening of March 14.

We have removed the message on the Sign In page about overdue accounts at this time. We have decided to postpone implementing this billing reminder change until later this spring. We will communicate in advance when this will take effect.

This article is intended to clarify our billing collection process. Our goal has always been to implement a fair policy, while also recognizing that Etsy relies on collecting fees from our members in order to continue developing and growing our business.

Here are the common questions we’ve seen related to Etsy billing collection:

When does a bill become overdue?
Billing statements are emailed on the 1st day of the month at 12:00 am UTC; these statements detail all the fees incurred by an account for the previous month. There is a payment grace period of 15 days; the balance must be paid in full by 12:00 am UTC on the 16th day of the month (this is the beginning of the day on the 16th). An account not paid in full by that time is considered overdue.

What time zone does Etsy billing use?
Etsy billing operates on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is essentially the same as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Etsy begins sending monthly billing statements on the 1st day of each. Unpaid bills are considered overdue on the 16th of each month at 12:00 am UTC. To translate 12:00 am UTC on the 16th day of the month into your time zone, please follow these links: March 16, 2009 / April 16, 2009 / May 16, 2009 / June 16, 2009 / July 16, 2009 / August 16, 2009 / September 16, 2009 / October 16, 2009 / November 16, 2009 / December 16, 2009.

Where on the site is this stated? I read something different.
We recognize that we have conflicting information on the site regarding the exact timing of our billing cycles. We will be updating all billing related content on the site to be consistent and accurate.

Why didn’t sellers receive an email stating the changes to the billing process?
We will be sending an email to all registered sellers this week. In that email, we will include the information reviewed here, as well as additional relevant information about Etsy billing.

Will an account be suspended if a seller does not pay their Etsy bill?
Right now, we are not taking this level of action for currently overdue bills. Eventually, yes, as specified in our policies, a seller’s account may be suspended for not paying their bill. This will happen in the future as outlined below. We will communicate in advance of this policy becoming effective, which we anticipate will be later this spring. In addition, the new process will include email reminders and a message on the Sign In page for accounts which are overdue.

Here is how the upcoming changes to the billing process will operate:

Etsy bills are issued for the previous month’s fees. Billing statements are emailed to all seller accounts on the 1st day of the month. There is a payment grace period of 15 days.
If a bill is not paid before 12:00 am UTC on the 16th day of the month, the bill is considered overdue. On the 16th day of the month, an account that has an overdue bill is sent an email reminder and is shown a message at the Sign In that their account is overdue.
An account that is overdue less than 2 months will be sent email billing reminders and see the message at Sign In until payment is made. The account still retains full capabilities.
After 2 months from the date the bill was originally issued, an account that has an overdue bill will lose the ability to list, relist and renew item listings until the balance is brought up to date.
After 3 months from the date the bill was originally issued, an account that has an overdue bill will be closed until the balance is brought up to date.

Do I have to pay if I only owe less than $1.00 USD (between $0.01-$0.99)?
Previously, Etsy only accepted payments of $1.00 or more from sellers. Now that we have implemented PayPal as a means to pay Etsy bills, we ask those owing less than $1.00 to pay their balances in a timely manner, just like other Etsy sellers. If you are billed $0.60, you can now pay $0.60, and you have the option to pay via PayPal.

What happens to an account when the Etsy bill is 2 months overdue? 3 months overdue?

When the new billing process is in effect, an account that is overdue by 2 months, regardless of amount owed, will lose listing, relisting and renewing abilities.
When the new billing process is in effect, an account that is overdue by 3 months, regardless of amount owed, will be closed.

Why am I receiving errors when paying my Etsy bill with PayPal?
We have investigated these reports. There was an intermittent problem for some sellers over the past weekend. For those who attempted to send an Etsy bill payment via PayPal and received a failure notice, no funds changed hands. Please try again. We believe this issue to be resolved now.

Billing Alert: Change to Overdue Bill Collection

We now accept payments under $1, so we expect all sellers to pay the full amount due, even if your bill is less than $1.

Hi Etsians, my name is Sinohe and I'm Etsy's Controller (aka bean counter). Behind the scenes, all of us have been working hard to improve the overall Etsy experience and to put Etsy on a path to be a lasting and profitable company. Like many other businesses, Etsy relies on collecting fees from our members in order to continue developing and growing our business. The majority of Etsy sellers do pay their bills promptly and in full, and, for that, we are very thankful. However, there are also some sellers who allow their bills to become overdue.

Etsy will be emailing a reminder to those sellers who have overdue bills. The email will outline how to pay and the consequences for non-payment. We want to provide everyone the opportunity to settle their account balances. We do realize that this is a busy time for everyone but think that it is important enough of an issue to address it with the November billing cycle.

Two weeks after the initial email referenced above, Etsy will begin to send seller accounts with bills over 90 days past due to a third-party collection agency. This means that if a seller still holds an unpaid balance from August 2008 fees or prior, then that seller may receive a letter or other communication from a collection agency on behalf of Etsy about settling his/her outstanding balance. Before sending a seller to the third-party collection agency, Etsy will attempt to notify him/her a final time by email. This new step of involving a collection agency as a regular part of our collection process is the only change to our billing procedure at this time. This is not an action we take lightly, but it is one that is important for building Etsy as a lasting company.

We hope to only use the collection agency as a last resort, and you can help us avoid it by responsibly paying your bill on time. If your bill is overdue and consequently you are unable to list, relist and renew items, please sign in and pay your bill to have your shop privileges reinstated. If your account is closed and you still owe fees to Etsy, please email billing@etsy.com to discuss paying your bill and reinstating your account.

Apartment Therapy's Collections as Inspiration: Wendi's Pioneer Modern

Apartment Therapy's Gregory Han is like a life coach for your home! He walks you through this house tour from Wendi Weger and he whispers brilliant decorating advice in you ear.

Collecting is easy, it's the organizing and displaying which often confounds even the best of collectors. But as illustrated by the "nature indoors" menagerie of Wendi Weger's Silver Lake home, displaying a collection doesn't necessarily mean just sticking your beloved collections on shelves. Maximizing a collection's impact is not only about having the right items to display, but also "how" and "where" they're given the spotlight to add to the spirit of your home.

When displaying a collection keep in mind that larger pieces often do best alone with enough space to breathe. Whether it's a deer head on the wall or a beloved piece enshrined within a glass display, giving your larger collectibles the role of a focal point can center an interior space. Think of larger collectibles as the grand fountain in the front garden of a home.

Smaller items in multiples especially work well when grouped together in various sizes and finishes, offering opportunities to convert normally ignored sections of the home into newfound gallery spaces. Wendi's stairway landing gallery beautifully illustrates this idea, offering something to see whether you're going up or down.

Got something you think is especially worth highlighting? Put it under glass! A bell jar makes almost anything seem that much more valuable and delicate, even if it's a thrift store find.
When displaying a collection, consider how and where you and others will be seated and standing within the space. Displaying a collection is partially a game of catching a person's eye; take note of the view from specific points in the room to help determine where to display your collectibles, and whether to organize them vertically or horizontally. Or even better, try finding opportunities to display portions of your collection with an element of surprise, positioning certain items to only be viewable from a specific viewing angle or position. Let curiosity lead the way. Whether guests are looking up or down, offering a new perspective introduces a fun element of discovery into experiencing a collection. It also maximizes space, especially if using ceilings and walls, and can "fill in the gaps" when used strategically. In Anne and Jacob's house tour, we see a corner nook with glove molds anchoring an anatomical chart which leads up to a fun and surprising clock. Guest Curator: The Wooster Collective

Today's Guest Curators are Marc and Sara Schiller of the Wooster Collective. Their mission is to discover and document authentic art experiences through salons, publishing, gallery shows, and of course, their website. They live in downtown Manhattan and have been documenting and enjoying the street art in their neighborhood and around the world for the past eight years. Their latest endeavor is the launch of Meet at the Apartment, an evocative meeting-space for executive meetings and brainstorms located in the Soho district of Manhattan.

Dollhouse Scale Miniatures: Facts and Fancies

Welcome to the world of collectible scale dollhouse miniatures. To someone who hasn’t discovered the wonder of a complete house in miniature, made as a scale model, the term “dollhouse” conjures up an image of a toy. However, a true to scale house and its contents is a work of art and a collector’s piece, not a toy. With Etsy's recent addition of a Dolls and Miniatures Category, we wanted to dive into the miniatures art form, as a companion post to Art Dolls: Facts and Fancies by ladyartisandolls.

If you look at a high quality photo of a masterfully created scale miniature room, you might not be able to tell it from a photo of a real life room! Such perfect creations are often housed in museums.

No detail is missed: makers often install tiny working lights. When you turn off the exterior lights in your room and turn on the interior of the dollhouse, it creates a magical effect. Viewing the house through its windows this way, you feel like a giant looking into a house at night.

Dollhouse artists make tiny items in the same way — and often from the same materials — as their full size counterparts, including wood, glass, china, pottery, metal, fabric, etc. The miniature versions often cost more than their full size counterparts, due to the skill and time they take to make to painstakingly tiny scale. Artists sculpt food from durable materials, usually polymer clay, and plants and flowers from similar materials plus paper.

Some collectors refuse to even have dolls — scale figures, in reality — because they never quite look real or alive. Take a look at a friend or family member or someone sitting on a park bench — even if they try to sit perfectly still, they still make slight movements, such as breathing or blinking, and this effect cannot be captured by sculpted figures.

On the other hand, some people form entire collections of scale figures, including humans in costumes from every historic period or fantasy beings, i.e. fairies, witches, etc. These figures are typically made from porcelain in molds or sculpted individually from polymer clay. Occasionally other materials are used, e.g. air drying clay or carved from wood.

You don’t have to opt for an entire scale dollhouse; a single room in a diorama or a collection of individual items can give just as much pleasure if you're restricted by space or finances.

It is possible to create a moment in time in total accuracy using scale miniatures, and it’s a wonderful way to do historical research. Other possibilities for projects are modern, futuristic or fantasy settings.

Early European examples dating from the 17th century are usually in the form of a cabinet with shelves; these were called “baby houses“. Modern dollhouses have detailed exteriors as well as interiors; the term ’dollhouse’ also includes shops, cafes and bars. They are either open backed, which is the American fashion, or with hinged fronts, which are common in the United Kingdom. The hinged front design has the advantage of being able to be placed against a wall. Because these dollhouses are totally enclosed, they keep out dust more effectively. In the UK the term “doll's house” is used more than the American “dollhouse“.

Some collectors specialize in restoring old houses, often originally made as toys and in 1/16th scale. Modern collectors’ dollhouses can be built from scratch, from kits, bought assembled but not decorated or finished and ready to "move into."

Because these buildings and their contents are scale models with all measurements carefully taken and calculated to the chosen scale, a house can be furnished with items from different makers from around the world. Everything will be able to be used together — because of these shared standards — in the same way as furnishing and equipping a full size real home.

Many people have difficulty with the calculation of scale. Here is a list of all the popular scales. For guidance I've included sizes for adult humans of 5 feet to 6 feet tall in each scale. The first term is the one used in the Etsy “scale dollhouse miniature” sub-category under the "Dolls and Miniatures" top level category.

One Inch -1/12th - 1” to the foot. Most popular and largest size. People 5” - 6”

Three Quarters Inch - 1/16th - ¾” to a foot. Usually older ‘toy’ houses. People 3 ¾” - 4 ½”

Half Inch - 1/24th - half scale (being half the size of the most popular 1/12th) ½” to a foot. People 2 ½” - 3”

Quarter Inch - 1/48th - quarter scale - ¼” to the foot. People 1 ¼” - 1 ½”

Micromini - 1/144th - 1/12th of an inch to a foot. These tiny houses can be used as 1/12th scale dollhouses to go into 1/12th scale dollhouses. People 5/12” - ½”

Metric conversion one inch = 24mm

Etsy Finds: Love It and Leave It

Sometimes to really love a city you have to leave it. New York's history as an art capital is long and venerated, oddball and full of fits and explosions. This volatility and excitement is what has drawn generations of artists from Europe and the Midwest, to try their hand at causing one of those infamous art world fits. But in a city where you can't rent a studio the size of a watercolor set for less than what Damien Hirst sells his smallest dot drawings (Sotheby's estimate: $60,000!) it might be time for those artists to head home. But, before you pack up and head back to the future art capitals of Richmond, Kansas City, Montreal, Mexico City, Berlin or Detroit (where I'm fairly sure you can rent an entire block for the cost of a Manhattan lunch), make sure you take something to remind you of the city you loved and left.

The CT Etsy Team will be holding their Shake 'n' Bake Indie Craft Fair on October 4, 2008. This creative Team has paired up with Trash American Style, a mobile purveyor of fine quality records, LP's, and other hard to find musical goodies for the event, and will also boast a bake sale! All the vendors will be baking delicious treats as a fundraiser. 50% of the money we earn will be donated to Escape to the Arts, a local YMCA community art program located in Danbury, Connecticut. As the Arizona Crafty Burrito Collective continues to grow, they are at the important stage of organizing their group to provide the best support and networking possible. Since the temperatures remain extremely hot in the Arizona desert, it's been a great time of year for the Crafty Burritos to get fully prepped for the Holiday Season. They're gearing up for the First Friday Art walk in October, where they'll be spreading the word about Etsy and their Team.

The Indie 5 Collective: A Video Collaboration

Ali, Amy, and Julia have created their own YouTube channel called the Indie 5 Collective, and together they independently create videos!

They are posting helpful videos for Etsy sellers, such as this one about how to use social networking site Facebook to promote your Etsy shop. Sometimes the videos are just downright hilarious.

Ali broke it down and gave me the scoop on her collaborative project.

"A few months ago, I began making videos to promote my Etsy shop at Buttonhead.etsy.com. Each time I posted a new video, I received such a positive response from the community, and I started to realize the full potential for using video as a way to share knowledge and resources. Inspired by the many cool vlogging and artist collaboration channels on YouTube, I established the Indie 5 channel. We are an Etsy artist video collaboration show airing 5 days/week on YouTube. The channel is designed to highlight the crafting community, provide instruction and information to indiepreneuers, feature outstanding artists, and promote the ‘buy indie’ lifestyle.

We would very much like to expand our group of contributors, so we are now accepting video submissions. If anyone is interested in learning more on how to get involved, you can check us out.
