We're super excited to introduce Maria to everyone. She's our new Chief Operating Officer (COO). At the moment she's in the Southern hemisphere, taking a brief break before jumping into Etsy. So in the meantime, here's a video portrait we shot just before she left.

Jorge aka jorgelo is one of the kinder/gentler engineers at Etsy. He's a mellow fellow (except for his love of extreme sports! Hint: search "Xterra Rollover" on Youtube.) and has a really adorable dog named Clementine who he sometimes brings to the Etsy Labs. It's also rumored that this tender-hearted guy is a vegan as well as a self-professed "crazy cat lady." (He owns five!) How could you not love this man we know as Jorge?

Since he's one of the engineers who we get to see on a regular basis (he doesn't work from home), this means we get to see his ninja skills in real life! Speaking of ninja skills...Sledding while practicing archery while wearing shorts in the dead of winter??? This man is crazy talented.

The master of SEO, likeomg! Eric is like a magician, casting spells with keywords. He's got his finger on the pulse of Etsy, and he's always masterminding how to get Etsy and sellers' shops higher up in Google rankings. You can see some of the posts he's written for the Storque — some show off his delightful dude's perspective on shopping and some have tips for sellers for tweaking their SEO status.

Eric Fun Facts:

Eric wrote a tear-jerking chronicle of his dog, Soda Pop.

He owns more domains than anyone ever. He used to get up at 5am and watch CNN in order to find out the new buzz words, and then buy those domains.

He was in the Navy and that's where he learned how to sew, while doing laundry for sailors and mending their skivvies.

He makes music and sings in his spare time. He commissioned a personal soundproof recording booth on Alchemy.

Eric has waaay too many pairs of sneakers, and he writes his domain names on them so that people will see it on the subway.

The Bronx loft that he's building out is in a clocktower building, just like the Etsy Labs.

The engineers are thinking of buying him the url GIVEUPERICOWNSIT.COM as a gift.

Wait. Was Eric a professional surfer in California? ...No. He had this portrait taken with a skurfer at the mall in Minnesota.

Eric has furnished us with this cute, yet mildly awkward photo of him as a (blonde!) child. Weird how hair color changes that way.

Charles Smith aka winenutnyc works on the Business Operations Team here at Etsy. Charles arrives early to work with a spring in his step. He's business savvy and passionate about Etsy, providing us with stats, strategic planning advice, pay checks (Mmmm, paychecks). Sellers, look for his monthly Statistics posts on the Storque; you're gonna love it. He's also father to two of the cutest little kids in Brooklyn and Twitters the funny things they say.

Charles Fun Facts:

He's a wine connoisseur.
He has solar panels on his green roof.
He used to work at a TV news station (his family is in the news business) and thus he's a pro in front of a camera.
He is a crazy good poker player and he won $650 in one hand of Black Jack in Las Vegas recently.
We videotaped him singing a mean "My Sharona" while playing Rock Band, but we won't post it and embarrass him.
He used to work for Macy's.
Matt says Charles beat Malcom Gladwell at chess.
If you hit him over the head with a mallet he turns into 100 tiny leprechauns (according to Jim).

Etsy Alumni: Mike aka MikeH

One of his main interests outside of Etsy is video and filmmaking. We on the Storque Team are eager to get him to make a video for this here blog!

Mike sounds like a fellow with very interesting talents, especially when you ask the other engineers for Fun Facts:

He's a dwarf-shaman.
His cat types for him half the time.
He has a black belt in twisted.

Mike, unlike most of us, can actually play the guitar instead of just Guitar Hero.* He sent this to me as his awkward photo, but he just looks...talented.

As we all know, Mike is a ninja, but we've uncovered early evidence of him as a young pirate:

Etsy Alumni: Jay(red) aka Jay

Jay is one of the first engineers to be hired at Etsy. He came to us via his wife Luca of Lollibomb. Jay is a smarty-pants but he's not in your face about it; rather he's just has this very cool and approachable way about him. He's a true gentleman and geek at heart. It's so nice to work with someone who sincerely wants to help and make Etsy a better place!

Jay Fun Facts:

His real name is Jared, but Etsy admins decided to rename him Jay, so as not to be confused with Jared Tarbell. No one else in the whole world calls him Jay. Just us. His mom hates it.
Jay recently relocated from sunny Florida to be closer to Etsy Labs in Brooklyn. Jay lives in New Jersey.
Jay is usally dressed in all black.
He's very accident prone -
- he's a member of the Etsy Admin Head Trauma Club.
- he was hit in four separate hit-and-run accidents in one year.
- he fractured his toe in his sleep!

Despite all the injuries, he still manages to play some mean hardball.

Zak aka zakj was once the world's youngest insurance salesman. Now that he's outgrown that career, he works as an engineer for Etsy. The Storque has a special place in its heart for him as he's currently making improvements on this here superblog. He lives out in San Francisco so we don't get to see him all that often, sadly.

Zak Fun Facts:

He's a security expert.
He is Lakin's secret twin.
He's a Mac fan-boy.
He loves Jelly Belly jelly beans.
He's deathly afraid of mounties on llamas.
Zak is originally from Australia and, according to MarietheBee, always forgets the American versions of two words: "dressing gown" (robe) and "face washer" washcloth.
He loves Lamingtons and misses them so much. Marie recommends you please send him Lamingtons.
He also feels a bit tormented by having lost his Australian accent and the allure it entails.
Apparently, he also gets really snoozy.

Introducing Caleb, aka calebwalt: a sassy, soft-spoken Southern boy with a heart of gold! Caleb is a painter, printmaker, and likes to draw pointillist compositions of random folks on the subway. Although saddened when Pop Tart breakfast cereal was discontinued in the late 80's, Caleb has managed to accomplish much. He has worked with several great artists since his arrival in New York, including Chuck Close and Jenny Holzer. (You can see his self portrait below.) We are so glad to have him as part of the Etsy Support Team!

I felt an instant kinship with Alec aka scaramouche even though we hadn't met in person: we'd both separately drawn maps illustrating our homes in the "armpit of Massachusetts." Alec is here at the Etsy Labs right now for the engineering meet-up (he's usually working remotely from his home in Massachusetts) and I got a chance to talk face-to-face with him. Alec tells me he found out about Etsy through Mike, another Etsy engineer. The two first met in 1991 on a BBS and then got to be friends through a multi-user online game. So, in a way, Alec is totally used to coding on his own while simultaneously chatting in the IRC, the main way all the engineers communicate while scattered around the globe.

Of his amazing awkward picture, Alec says, "I had hair down to the middle of my back in high school and I decided I wanted to cut it, but my friend convinced me to do a mohawk. So we bought some red Manic Panic and did it in his bathtub. Yeah, I've had a lot of interesting haircuts..."

Paul, aka Paulie D, aka OhPauleez, works on the engineering team here at Etsy — on the infrastructure and framework, in particular. He's known for being a cheerful early riser and for having some serious dance moves. Even though he lives in Philly, he pops into the Brooklyn office to work with some regularity.

Paul is his real name, but we at Etsy call him Paulie.
Attended college at night during high school and graduated early, just like Doogie Howser.
Gave up being a vegetarian to cook more Italian food and honor his heritage.
He got carpal tunnel because all he was doing was playing music and typing code.
For Paulie, anytime is a good time to dance.

Alex aka alexandersomma…Where to start? Alex is one of the most unique people I’ve ever met. I look at these photos and think to myself, “Wow, baby Alex with box on head: that is soooo Alex.” He’s type of geek who has a t-shirt that lights up when it sniffs out wifi signals. And he’s a gentleman who always treats people with a conscientiousness unparalleled.

The thing I love about Alex is the way he can go from being chatty and talking about a million things at a million miles a minute (like how he was able to get on wifi for his entire train trip from Montreal to NYC) and then — all of sudden when something important comes up — he is in problem-solver mode in this super-intense way. It’s like he has superhero powers. I think this is why he’s lovely to work with and good at what he does, which is QA (Quality Assurance with Annette. Find out what Quality Assurance is here). Alex has been working at Etsy since December 2006.

Anda recounts the evening that the last people to leave the Labs had no key to lock the door behind them. Alex was the one who invented the way to lock the door from the outside with a mere piece of hot pink string, a Toonie, and some Canadian ingenuity. He totally saved the day, but Anda still wonders whether the Toonie was really necessary.

Here's another example of why Alex is great: we were on the subway in NYC and he had his $100 laptop out and randomly struck up the loveliest conversation with a complete stranger, wherein Alex convinced her to buy one for her young child. He is so patient and loves to teach and encourage people!

Alex fun facts:
Has a lovely Canadian accent.
His father is a goldsmith.
He loooooooves Linux.
He always travels to Etsy Labs with at least one female companion.
Alex has a new gadget to play with everytime he visits the Etsy Labs.
He always gets injured and has to go to the emergency room whenever he visits.
See, he does love cookies. He loved 'em in high school.

Annette, aka annettemusick, is one of the most intense and awesome people I've ever met. Upon shaking hands with her for the first time, it became immediately apparent that she's incredibly intelligent and talented and really engaged with the world around her. I'm not sure what it is: she just has a certain energy about her. And so it didn't surprise me a bit when I found out she's a shaman. Other interesting Annette fun-facts:

She's from Texas.
She knows a lot about graffiti.
She pulls off some of the biggest jewelry I've ever seen.
She's got a sultry, cool voice.
She plays conga drums really, really well.
She is one of the few Etsy admin who will be going to Burning Man.

We are really lucky to have her working for Etsy, where she works on the QA Team (find out what Quality Assurance is here). We over here in Storqueland wish she'd move to Brooklyn so we'd get to see her more.

Bre is our new media guru over here at the Etsy Labs. He works with the Storque team and is wont to Twitter with the best of em. Bre can explain RSS to you in less than 30 seconds, which then makes us realize we should add these types of things as how-tos on the Storque. Yeah, that's right. If there's something on the internet that we should know about...Bre to the rescue!

Bre is super fun and full of ideas. He's got cute puppets up his sleeve, too, so watch out for that! He also allegedly saw Big Foot when he was at summer camp as a child. His goal is to be the top search term for "Bre" on Google, and he's darn close! Also, Bre is short for "Brehaspati," which is actually his hippy middle name. You can read our announcement from when we first hired him.

Apparently, Bre was full of angst during high school. I think a Flock of Seagulls picked him up, flew away with him, and dropped him on this here jeep. We had another awkward picture of Bre where he's sitting on a jeep. Maybe this was the thing to do if you were a cool kid in Seattle?

Baby Bre, just chillin'. It was so peaceful and quiet then, before the dawning of the internet.

Kelly! Our geek-in-residence is our favorite prickly pear over here on the Etsy team. We never know when Kelly's gonna be like, "Nah, I'm not going to do that for you. That's stupid." And you know what? She's usually right. And when Kelly has a better idea, she makes it come to life so intelligently, we feel even more dumb. (Just kiddin'.)

Seriously, folks. Kelly is such an asset to Etsy! She works on the Product Team, where she helps design and improve the interface of our website. She's totally passionate about problem solving and the internets and crafting and crazy computerized knitting machines. As the spawn of old-school geeks, she's got the 1's and 0's flowing through her veins, giving her the science fiction like ability to translate what the engineers are talking about to the other teams!

Oh, and she also makes really sweet jewelry and other cool objects. Kelly, can I get a deal on your "WTF" belt buckle?

Etsy Alumni: Paul aka pasilveira

UPDATE: Farewell, Paul! We will miss you and we wish you the best with your new job.

Paul aka pasilveira is on the Engineering Team where he works on System Operations. The Sys Ops engineers work with the databases and the servers — the framework on which all of us rely. He is very vocal and passionate about keeping Etsy up and running — and has even been known to go head to head with Etsy founder and engineer Haim, a very intimidating debater, about the best Sys Ops methods.

Notice how Etsy hasn't been crashing at all lately? Paul is one member of the team that keeps Etsy operating as smoothly as possible. He's also working hard with Haim, Dusten, Ian, CB, George, and Joe P to move our servers to a new — more optimized — space. These guys don't get enough credit ... because if they're doing their jobs well, you don't notice what they're doing!

Paul is from the town next to where Vanessa grew up in Southern Massachusetts.
Despite living in North Carolina for many years, he has a detectable New England accent (which is how Vanessa identified him as a "Masshole.")
He moved to North Carolina because the weather is so awful in New England.
Bob pointed out he uses ellipses ALL of the time!
He plays hockey.
He's a Red Sox fan.
According to Joe P., he likes to use "deltas" to describe standard deviations in a graph.
His management style is closest to Scrum.
He is very susceptible to Etsy Office Plague.
He loves his coffee from Dunkin Donuts and he's certain the secret to the DD is a constant 200 degrees.
He has a daughter, twin boys and another baby on the way.
Paul is of Portuguese descent and we think he can speak Portuguese though we need Beth aka bethela to confirm that.

As a fairly recent new hire, Lakin aka lakinwecker remains a bit of a mysterious persona. We definitely know he likes coffee. He's also pretty elusive and camera shy. He lives in the far hinterlands aka the Northernland of Canada: Calgary, specifically. Considering that his baby picture shows him astride a camel whilst his whole family treks through sandy Desertlands, I have a very exotic impression of him. I also know that he loves his wife very much and he's sporty. He used to do that crazy ski jumping that you see in the Olympics.

His older sister is an Etsy seller with two shops: loopsdesigns and twizzledesigns, and his younger sister is labellepoubelle. "My older sister and I found the site independently days apart, and I called her to tell her that she should switch from Ebay to Etsy and she was like: 'I've already signed up and am starting to use it!'" It's a wonderful family affair.

He's a really sweet guy and we're happy to have him here at Etsy, where he works on the Engineering Team!
