As 2009 comes to a close, we here at the blog are taking time to reflect on an exciting year in video for Etsy. We met and collaborated with many incredibly talented Etsy artists and had a chance to delve deeper into who they are and what they make. We launched a new video series about home decor and collections called There's No Place Like Here. We look forward to 2010 as a year to explore more amazing spaces, discover new narratives and show how makers do what they do.

There's No Place Like Here
Artists and designers invite Etsy into their homes to reveal their collections, creations, and uniquely customized living spaces. Find out what captures these tastemakers' imaginations, where they unearth their treasures, and how they have fine-tuned their aesthetics. There's No Place Like Here! Take a peek at Made With Love By Hannah's German chalet, overflowing with vintage kitsch, in downtown Los Angeles. Design duo Something's Hiding In Here give us a tour of their renovated Philadelphia loft full of woodland vintage and an indoor porch swing. Tour the Santa Cruz grounds of Niki Silva's communal living paradise La Selva.

Handmade Portraits
What makes the creative mind tick? Discover the story behind the maker in this mini-documentary series. Handmade Portraits introduces viewers to the creative universe that is Etsy's community. Canadian artist Sarah Faber of Black-Eyed Suzie creates delicate, Gothic art dolls that evoke Victorian times. It took woodworker Fred Jakubiec from Birdhouseaccents 25 years before he made building birdhouses his full-time job. It was well worth the wait.

Process
Get into the creative flow with Etsy's Process series. These illuminating videos provide an intimate glimpse into the relationship between artist and material. Witness the techniques behind the design lifecycle. It's a truly transfixing experience to observe Kim Westad throw one of her signature Sweet Pea bowls on the wheel in her tranquil studio. BeyondthePicketFence is not just a soap maker; she's her own research and development lab — one might go as far as to call her a bathmatician.

Etsy Finds: Cute Explosion

You can't throw a virtual stone without hitting something insanely cute on Etsy. From babies dressed like Al Bundy to a range of furry animals reluctantly wearing hats, the Etsy community has it a bit of an addiction to disproportionately large heads, button noses and the teeny tiny. About Us: Dan a.k.a. McFunley

This is a special edition of our About Us series, in which we profile Etsy staff. Today, we're not just getting to know Dan McKinley, a.k.a. McFunley. We're also paying tribute to Dottie, a.k.a. Dottie Matrix, his miniature daschund, in all her speckled glory.

Dan, a mainstay in the prickly pear contingent of Etsy's Admin, has been an engineer since September of 2007. He's got a lot going on in the ol' noggin. You never know when, after a brief moment of simmering silence, Dan will either burst out in a bright, slightly unhinged peel of laughter, or if he'll grumble a snide remark.

Similarly, you never know if Dottie will run over to your desk for an extended snorgle session, complete with belly scratches and frollicking, or if she'll lay a turd in the middle of the floor. Hard to tell what's going on with these two, but we love them! Dan is an excellent engineer and Dottie has become the Etsy mascot.

Dan Fun Facts:

Dan seems to have a deep, personal connection to Hunter S. Thompson, judging by his T-shirt collection.
Amy says she keeps "waiting for the 'dress as your favorite Etsy Admin' day so I can dress as Dan with a Spoon T-shirt, stuffed dog and Haskell book."
Dan once authored an Etsy Finds posts entirely about the Mountain Goats. Anda says he can sing all the lyrics of all their songs.
Nicholas also notes that Dan's favorite programming language is lisp.
Tim describes him as stern but never cross. He adds, "One time he half-smiled in my general direction."
Starpoli claims to make him homicidal every time she cheerily says, "Good morning, Dan!" So she says it a lot.
Gerry says he keeps a book about atheism at hand for bathroom reading.
Starpoli says Dan came up with one of the best names for our conference room naming contest (the theme was mashups of food and rockbands): Soy Division.
Eliz, whose desk was targeted for pooping under, is not a fan of Dottie.

One of the categories of his blog is "angst." From his bio: "I have severe disdain for C++, Java, PHP, and XML, but so far haven’t figured out how to avoid them." Dan's mindset is full of disdain.
Anda recalls that at the Etsy holiday party two years ago, Matt made us all sing Christmas carols and Dan busted out his guitar and sang. A lot.
He says he's in a band, but none of us can confirm that. Eliz points out that he does have 9583290 guitars.
Eliz says he likes to spend his time staying up late formulating arguments for emails, mostly to other engineers.
"Dan hates everything" — Ian, a.k.a. imm.
Sean says Dan is an ISTP personality type. (He hates Myers-Briggs personality tests.)
At Etsy's Fourth Anniversary Party, we all had name tags that said "I make _____". Dan filled in the blank with "eliz angry."
Sean dug up some of Dan's old posts for The Storque (back when we forced all Admin to contribute). "Dan pens baroque Etsy Finds."
Dan, who is the only engineer left on the team who understands The Storque's special Django programming language, won't touch The Storque's code with a ten foot pole.
Kevin adds, "Dan loooooves vim."
Kyle says that Dan was "all about keg stands while in a college frat." (See awkward photo below.)

Dottie Fun Facts

Nicholas points out how she likes to walk around holding her toy in her mouth and whining at people to throw it for her.
Her muzzle can barely mouth a tennis ball's full diameter.
Dottie loves playing hard to get. However, she also loves to have her belly rubbed.
Eliz hates her.
Starpoli loves her, but Dottie plays hard to get. "But then she lets me scratch her belly sometimes, and I feel like I'm the luckiest person ever."
Nicholas notes that Dottie will sit on your lap while you work, especially if you have a snack on your desk.

Dan takes Dottie to work in the wicker basket mounted on the front of his bike...like he's in Wizard of Oz or Elliot from E.T.
Dottie has her own Facebook page.
Alison and Tara love her, and they get down on their hands and knees and let her play in their long hair — hair-scapades!
When Alison dog-sat for Dottie, the little pup was quite high maintenance and needed to be in constant contact. Dottie even needed to sleep in Alison's bed — at the foot, deep under the covers. "It was most 'ENH!'," Alison says.

Dan claimed to not have an awkward photo for this post. Pshhht! Here's one compliments of Eliz, who documented this failed keg stand attempt, recalling Dan's frat boy yesteryear, late night at the Etsy fourth anniversary party.

I have met a few cockatoos in my day, but on this day, in early June, I met Sunny and FlaxMan, two Umbrella Cockatoos who help run wildpen, an Etsy shop where they sell handmade (er... beak- and talon-made) gifts. Unfortunately, Hope, a Moluccan Cockatoo was out during the shoot, but she's the third of three cockatoos that make up wildpen.

Sunny likes green sea glass. With her expert vision, and ability to see a 4th color channel, she can spot tiny pieces of glass darting about in the surf from a ways down the beach.

FlaxMan is mostly into a rock and roll lifestyle, but he takes breaks to work on wildpen. It helps to have a little Ani Difranco, Howling Wolf or PJ Harvey on the stereo to jumpstart his creative genius.

Hope is really into the mud masks. She loves mixing and testing personal batches on her feet. Since she couldn't be in the video, we'll indulge in one of her favorites:

Okay, so there is a fair share of (2) human hands involved, but if you buy from this shop, you can bet that a couple of rare birds had something to do with it.

I say rare, but Kate Haley, the birds' human assistant, informed me during the shoot that thousands of domestic parrots or varieties thereof find themselves without homes each year. Sunny, FlaxMan and Hope were all fortunate enough to by rescued by Kate and her husband who brought the birds into their home — a home that allows them to freely express themselves artistically. At the time this video was shot, the birds were donating a percentage of their earnings to charity and spending the rest on personal pleasures. Since the shooting of this video, Kate, Sunny, FlaxMan, and Hope have decided to donate 100% of the proceeds from wildpen to the shopper's choice of one of two bird sanctuaries and rehabilitation centers, to help ensure that more birds like those of wildpen have a safe and fulfilling life.

I suspect that some lucky shopper will walk (or flap) away with the collectible piece that Sunny found and FlaxMan chose for a wrap in this Process Video Feature:

This week's Guest Curator is Brandie Ahlgren, founder and editor of Seattle's CityDog Magazine. It took Fred Jakubiec from Birdhouseaccents 25 years before he made building birdhouses his full-time job. It was well worth the wait. After 13 years as Area Supervisor at various fast food establishments, a stint at a steel mill and years of driving for Fed Ex, Fred decided working for other people just wasn't fun anymore.

He and his partner Lynn Patrick regularly took trips to Amish country to go thrifting and flea market shopping. During one visit, Fred discovered primitive style woodworking, and it was then that knew he found his calling. Building birdhouses and decorating them with special recycled accents was the perfect niche for this one time woodworking tinkerer turned birdhouse entrepreneur.

The Art and Meditation of Drilling Sea Glass

Oh, the sound of drilling sea glass. Do you hear it?

That's actually the sound of me tearing my hair out the first few times I tried to drill sea glass. Before I launch into this story, I must give you some background on how I came to this point in my life (of meditative drilling, I mean).

At work one day a few months ago, a colleague showed me a beautiful sea glass bracelet she had made for herself. I immediately fell in love with the frosty gems. Shortly thereafter, I had some kind of epiphany of wanting to start my own jewelry line, and GhostShip was immediately born.

I found my first piece of gem quality sea glass while walking the beach one morning with my dog, wearing my down parka and trudging in the sand in my winter ski boots. What a thrill it was to carry my precious ziplock bag of treasures home, to sort them by color and shape, and then to finally sit down and try drilling into these weathered, reclaimed beauties.

Of course, like all good and eager novice drillers, my drill speed was too high, I didn't use enough lubricant, I wore out many good tips very fast, and broke many precious pieces from pressing too hard. I finally got the hang of it, but thought to myself, "This is torture! WHEN is this going to be over so I can get on to the fun part of putting the jewelry design together?"

I would dread the times when I needed to drill a batch of glass for my designs that week — it was so tedious and boring. I wondered why any sane person would want to spend any amount of time hearing what, at the time, reminded me of sitting in the dentist's chair. That unforgettable, spine-rattling drill noise twanged on my nerves like a very out of tune violin. Fun stuff indeed.

It was at that time when my lovely and snuffly bulldog, Bodhi, reminded me of life's very important lesson. I needed to slow down and smell the roses (or in his case, eat the roses…as we had just come back from a very slow and long walk with many unscheduled stops to chomp on grass, flowers, tree bark…but I digress).

After thoroughly wiping down his wrinkly dog suit, I sat down for dreaded drilling session. But this time, it was different.

I picked up the piece of sea glass in front of me, and lovingly felt its frosty smooth surface, its cooling touch. As I started to bite into it, I felt the calming, massaging buzz of the drill in my hand. I noticed the milky white liquid well up from inside the drill hole. I dipped my drill tip and stone into the cool ice-cube filled cups I had placed in front of me and watched the milky dust swirl away in the water. I became aware of every movement, every detail of what I was doing, and soon fell into a trance of drilling, dipping, swishing. Drilling, dipping, swishing. My mind started to clear and before I knew it, I was lost in this meditative world.

Who knew it could be this relaxing? Was I losing my mind? Actually I was training my mind.

In Buddhism, it's all about training your mind to become free from the cycle of suffering so that you can be a more compassionate and loving person. It's all about letting go. I had to let go of the frustration and impatience I was feeling whenever I drilled. Needless to say, I also discovered new and helpful techniques during this "transition" period.

For instance, I always drilled from one side, and would jump out of my chair as the drill bit finally pierced the other side of the glass, scaring me out of my skin (and Bodhi's) every time! I'm telling you, it's very difficult to put a dog suit back on a bulldog…have you ever tried?

Well, I learned to drill a little from each end, flipping the stone over and over, and finally meeting in the middle for a very calm and, well, civilized breakthrough. Also, I went down at least a couple of speeds on my drill, realizing that having the drill go faster was not going to drill my hole any faster. In fact, it was just the opposite. I also didn’t get so much buildup and heat on my point, which made my diamond points last so much longer.

In the end, I realized that something I'd thought was a nuisance and a chore, actually turned out to be one of the most enjoyable, relaxing things to do in the whole process of making jewelry.

The middle path: Who would have guessed? After all, it's really mind over matter, eh?

Kudos to us — and by us I mean me, you and everyone that partakes in Etsy. "Kudos for what?" you may ask. Kudos for making Etsy one of the best places to shop online! And it's not just me saying that (but I do say that a lot). That comes straight from the likes of sources such as The Guardian, who recently picked Etsy as their website of the week, and from Fast Company, who anointed us into the Fast Company 50, an annual list of the world's most innovative companies. Other folks who thought the same include Examiner.com, the New York Daily News (regarding weddings), and the unexpected and therefore even more compelling Invention and Technology News. Go figure!

On the making side of things, but with a shopping twist, there were two recent notables. The first piece is from Wired magazine, where Clive Thompson discusses the ins and outs of micromanufacturing — in the context of searching for the perfect anniversary gift for his wife. The second piece "Growth Of Crafty Businesses During Rough Economy" comes from the news desk at WCCO in Minnesota, with profiles of some local sellers. In light of our failing economy, this news is that much sweeter, so thank you all for your contributions.

In celeb news, Rosie O'Donnell has been making noise about her Etsy charity shop in places such as Us Weekly and the Tyra Banks Show. And in case you missed it, Mickey Rourke's neckwear at the Oscars last week caused quite a stir. On a side note that I am tempted to call "Odds and Split Ends," I stumbled across this blurb in Allure that I think you will enjoy.

Mickey Rourke Treasures His Handmade, Custom Pet Portrait Necklace

Congrats to wickedworld whose pendant was worn (ahem, flaunted) at the Oscars by pet-lover Mickey Rourke. The cute face of Loki, Mickey's beloved Chihuahua, stood out from Mickey's flashy white suit and be-sunglassed look. The actor was nominated for this year's Best Actor for his role in The Wrestler. Sadly, Loki passed away only days prior, and Mickey tearfully dedicated the Independent Spirit award to the pooch at a separate ceremony.

I think most pet-lovers would agree that the necklace is an endearing tribute. It's so touching coming from someone who seems like such a tough guy. Guess he's a softy after all!

Thanks to crochetbouquet who pointed this out in the forums. She heard about it from Anderson Cooper who mentioned it on the Regis and Kelly TV show today.

Etsy Love Stories: HannahMade and Mcaplan

We don't want the Season of Love to ever end, and we're searching the community for Etsy love stories. The fourth story we're sharing with you this year (and it's so sweet!) chronicles the friendship of HannahMade and mcaplan.

Mcaplan: I am really excited to get the opportunity to gush about my collaborations with the great Hannahmade! Hannah is one of my dearest friends and we frequently team up to do shows together. We also spend a lot of time working in the same space (we currently share a studio in my house!). Even though our genres are totally different (I am art, she is jewelry) we seem to be able to find inspiration from watching each other work. This can be a very solitary occupation, and having another creative person around to bounce ideas off of has really been invaluable.

Last year Hannah made me a very special birthday pendant that showcased one of my favorite collages of Eucalyptus leaves. The moment I got over how incredibly thoughtful and gorgeous it was, and the fact that she had sculpted it with her own hands, I knew that she was onto something.

It didn't take Hannah long to start planning which pieces she wanted to frame next, and I loved seeing which stones she would incorporate into the tassel in the adjustable chain in the back. Whenever I wear any of the pieces I get tons of questions and requests. Several of my clients who have had personal portraits commissioned have ordered pendants with their pieces in the frame. It is really cool to see that others are enjoying the fruits of our collaborations.

It isn't often that one finds their "soul sister," but I have been lucky enough to have been teamed up with one of the most creative and talented women out there! She is SO gifted and her work is absolutely impeccable. Hannah thrives on working with others and finding a muse for her pieces. I am honored that she wanted to team up and make each piece her muse. She really has outdone herself with each one!

HannahMade: It all started with a birthday, Michelle's 31st, to be exact. I had been sculpting frames out of PMC for a few months at this point, and knew Michelle's artwork would be the perfect fit. It was her piece "Eucalyptus" from Collage Lab that inspired the first collaboration AND birthday present! Once she saw it, we both knew there was an undeniable partnership that needed to happen. I basically harassed her to choose piece after piece for me to set in my frames that we would ultimately sell on Etsy and at various shows we did together. It was a serendipitous way for people to wear Michelle's art! Each frame is sculpted in the proportions of the art work and sealed with a UV resin gel. I also accent each necklace with semiprecious stones that compliment the colors featured in the correlating piece.

We've graduated to custom orders — people who commission Michelle with their own photographs are now requesting framed versions of these pieces with their orders. It's a real honor to make Michelle's work into another tangible form — one that can be seen when walking down the street, ultimately creating other ways people's memories can be captured and shared.

Fresh Shops: merlinsbarkproducts

Recently, I was clicking through Pounce Undiscovered with my right hand while rubbing my dog’s head with my left. I saw this great (well-crafted and simply designed) elevated dog feeder (in red-stained chestnut) by merlinsbarkproducts, and I ah-ha’ed aloud.

I love finding good woodwork on Etsy. This shop couples creative carpentry with a design sensibility that’s driven by deep compassion for animals.

So far, merlinsbarkproducts features an assortment of feeders and little wooden homes for an array of animals, such as bluebirds, bats, butterflies, flying squirrels…and of course, dogs.

I put a few questions to the creators behind merlinsbarkproducts, Sherry and Jerry:

There is a great beauty and variety of wood in your items. What are some of the benefits to using sustainably harvested or recycled wood?

It is very important to me that we use wood that comes from trees that are managed and farmed in ways that ensure the protection of the environment and other natural resources. Also, I would hate to think that I was contributing to the removal of old growth trees. I know that a lot of different animals depend on those trees for housing. Also, you can find a lot of beauty in old recycled wood. We get a lot of our recycled wood from a local building material recycling center. I am hoping to use some of their old barn wood for owl house I have in mind.

The designs of your animal homes seem strangely inviting...

I love to lay outside in my yard and watch all the different animals run around. When I’m watching them, I start to think about what type of houses and feeding station they would need.

One of my favorite products is our condominium for flying squirrels. It is just amazing! It is over 3-feet tall and has four floors. I came up with the design after watching our own flying squirrels and wondering what type of house they would need if our old pine tree didn’t exist anymore. I did a little research and came up with a house that any flying squirrel would be proud to call home.

I also realized the need for Purple Martin houses when a whole colony of them decided to move into our gutters this spring. I did a little research trying to figure out why they moved in and found out that Purple Martins are the only birds that totally depend on humans for housing. So now we will be adding Purple Martin houses to our product line.

Your blog details a very interesting story about how you turned an idea into a real company. Can you talk about some of the challenges you faced and how you resolved them?

One of the biggest challenges was figuring out what type of products I wanted to concentrate on. At first I was thinking about making products for animals and humans, but I have found myself concentrating more on products geared toward animals.

Though, humans benefit from our products too. Whether it is from installing a bat house and having Mother Nature’s little pest control experts take the place of using poisonous insecticide, or being entertained by song birds eating out of a feeder, the enjoyment our of products can be shared by animals and humans.

Our product line continues to evolve. I love receiving feedback and suggestions from customers. Recently we had people ask us about elevated cat bowl feeders. I had never thought making those before, but now we will be adding elevated cat bowl feeders to our product line. I also continue to do research on animal husbandry to see what other types of products we should be offering.

You are a member of the Abandoned Wild Babies Animal Resuce (AWBAR), who also keeps an Etsy shop. How does being a member of such a compassionate organization affect your role as a shop owner?

Since I’ve joined, I’ve been helping to spread the word about AWBAR through my blog and also on forums. I recently donated one of our dual feeders (a feeder that can be used by both birds and squirrels) to the AWBAR Etsy store. I can’t wait for it to sell. All of the proceeds from the sale will go directly to support the care of the baby animals at AWBAR.

Etsy Finds: Superhero Cat!

Those who know me well know that I am obsessed with cats, especially my amazing feline companion Ollie-Bear. They also know that I love the heck out of my niece and nephew. This fierce — though still adorable — Superhero Cat from desdemonia is a prime specimen of just the sort of unique item I can only find on Etsy. I love the fact that its a cat, and I love the fact that my little nephew would love it.

All little boys like kittens, and what little boy doesn't love superheroes?
