Etsy Finds: Choose Your Own Adventure

There's no such thing as a "typical" journey through Etsy's infinite expanse. I usually spend my days meandering a galaxy of denture soaps, dog coats and fruit cozies in a sweeping, loop-filled path that rivals that of the perpetual wanderer, Billy from Family Circus.

Today's Etsy Finds chronicle a Connections-fueled jaunt that began with a hand-carved sculptural rendition of marine Protozoa floating through the ocean — pretty nifty! Etsy's Connections shopping tool puts your own Favorites at play with those of your interwebular friends and neighbors, with many unexpected results. What will you discover today?

Etsy Finds: Conjunction Junction

I make a point to favorite everything on Etsy that catches my voracious aesthetic eye, and it has resulted in a virtual encyclopedia of my ever changing whims and tastes. However, finding new and intriguing items that I have not yet stamped with my heart-clicking finger can sometimes present a challenge.

Etsy's Connections tool is a clever visualization that shows you other Etsians who share your fondness for the antique mirror, cozy cowl or masterfully crafted porcelain bowl you recently added to your Favorites.

Montreal-based fashion designer Angie Johnson of iheartnorwegianwood is best known for her structuralist leather cage skirts, vintage trim elastic harnesses and colorful fringe necklaces. It's a modern look that dabbles in the silhouettes of bondage, while maintaining its femininity with vintage textiles. When Angie is designing her Norwegian Wood line, she's inspired by the trim and embellishments she finds in local fabric shops. "Montreal used to be one of the main manufacturing capitals of Canada, so there are a lot of great little hidden treasures that I seek out in order to make my designs." Angie is interested in creating accessories and clothing that transform the wardrobe you already have.

From the frothy cage dress came a sturdier cage skirt which in reality is a whole lot easier to wear. Depending on how high I pull it up on my waist, there's also different ways of working the structure of the cage."

When I'm on the prowl for hidden Etsy treasures, it's rarely a solo mission. Meandering my way from my Favorites to my Favorites' Favorites is the kind of adventure that produces a bounty of loot with few scraped knees. If your sense of direction is at times unreliable, trust your network of Etsians to help guide you through the treacherous terrain of shopping.

Etsy Finds: We Are All Connected

I admit it: I'm an Etsy addict. I make a point to heart everything that suits my fancy, and it has resulted in an overwhelming catalog of favorites! However, finding items that I haven't seen before can sometimes be a challenge. Etsy's Connections tool is a nifty visualization that shows you other Etsians who share your fondness for say, that lace dress, wooden bangle or colorful quilt you hearted last week.

Today's Etsy Finds were inspired by a tiny gastropod. I began my Connections query with the adorable Handmade Snail in a Real Shell by whileshenaps (which currently tops my "Gasp! Etsy Addicts: Top Hearters, Revealed!

As an Etsy addict (yes, I admit it!), I make a point to "heart" any item that catches my fancy, be it for me, as a gift for a friend, to feature here on Etsy's blog, or just because it's an amazing example of craftsmanship that could only be found on Etsy. Today I'm unmasking other Etsy Addicts to reveal some of the top hearters on the site. These Etsy Community members (both buyers and sellers) have collected astounding numbers of Favorites, and they keep them public for your benefit. Here are the interviews we did with these fine folk.

MacraMe was featured in yaelfran's Shop Local Argentina not long ago.

Why do you heart things on Etsy?
We heart for several reasons: because we love the item, to keep lists of items for our Treasury addiction, as a way of promotion, and we like to encourage new sellers.

Do you actively share your Etsy Favorites with anyone?
Our Favorites are open for everyone to see and we have an Etsy Mini of our Favorites on our blog.

Do you look at or follow other people's Favorites? Would you care to share any of their names?
After almost three years of being on Etsy we don’t follow other people's Favorites, but at the beginning we used the Connections tool as a way to search and browse.

Do you buy a lot of your Favorites? If not, what's the purpose behind bookmarking them?
We have bought on very special occasions. Unfortunately Argentina has an unfavorable exchange rate for making purchases — so we have all those hearts in the hope of someday being able to buy. We bookmarked them also for the reasons we mention before, and, if we hearted them, why un-heart?

You've been on Etsy for some time. What's your favorite thing about the site?
Etsy is full of beautiful things, but our favorite is Treasury. We don’t speak English very well so this tool lets us participate without the necessity of language. We have learned a lot making them, and it helps us to improve our store. Now, with more experience, we have a lot of fun making Treasuries, but the best thing is that it aided us in making friends with wonderful people whom we may never meet in person but whose affection we can still feel.

Another thing we love is the blog, The Storque, not only for the news, but for the old posts as well. We see them as records of the Etsy story. Also we must mention the opportunity of belonging to a Team. We are members of the Etsy in Spanish Team, where we can communicate in Spanish and meet every Friday with our Spanish-speaking comrades in the Chat Rooms. As we said, there are a lot of beautiful things on Etsy!

What are your hopes for Etsy's future?
We hope Etsy has continuity over time and that the economic crisis will be overcome quickly, in order for artists and crafters to be able to continue to develop in a positive way. We understand that Etsy has to evolve. Every day there are more people, more news, advances in technology and trade, but we hope Etsy doesn't lose the home spirit, the flavor of what was done by hand which made Etsy a very special place.

yaelfran's Favorites: 1452 Pages (and Counting)

Why do you heart things on Etsy?
I don't know exactly why, but I LOVE to heart items that catch my attention, and I LOVE to see who hearted me or my own items.

Do you actively share your Etsy Favorites with anyone?
Sometimes, if there is a special item I want to show to my husband or friends. For example, it was my friend's birthday, and I hearted four or five items to share with my other friends. We had decided to buy her a ring from Etsy, so I told my friends to look at my recent Favorites and from there we could choose one to buy.

Do you look at or follow other people's Favorites? Would you care to share any of their names?
ALWAYS. I think it's one of the things I enjoy most at Etsy: looking at my Favorites' Favorites. Of course I'd give you their names! elsita, irisschwarz, knots, iomiss, timssally, polarity, sushipot, prettylittlethieves, kjoo... and so many more.

Do you buy a lot of your Favorites? If not, what's the purpose behind bookmarking them?
No, I like to heart items here because of great photos, wonderful design, excellent composition, but not necessarily to buy them. I just love the idea of sellers knowing their creations are loved!

You've been on Etsy for almost three years. What's your favorite thing about the site?
Since I started, I've been saying the same thing about Etsy: I ADORE how user-friendly Etsy is. I really love the design, it is a pleasure to be a seller here, I enormously enjoy working on Etsy!

What are your hopes for Etsy's future?
I hope Etsy will be better and better every day, improving communication between the community and Admins and keeping honesty and common sense as their most important values.

Earmark's Favorites: 1418 Pages (and Counting)

Why do you heart things on Etsy?
Because I love the items, want to feature an item, want to use an item in a Treasury, must buy it or if I am comparing items that I want/need in the future. Basically, I heart items so I do not lose track of the item/shop.

Do you actively share your Etsy Favorites with anyone?
I put up the Etsy Mini of my Favorites on my blog.

Do you look at or follow other people's Favorites? Would you care to share any of their names?
I guess I do not follow anyone in particular. I look through MANY people's Favorites and I probably follow ThePeachTree's faves the most.

Do you buy a lot of your Favorites? If not, what's the purpose behind bookmarking them?
I do buy items from my Favorites, but I also use my Favorites as more of a wish list. I would love to be able to organize my faves into sections (wish lists, bags, edibles).

You've been on Etsy for almost three years. What's your favorite thing about the site?
Pretty much everything. I think Etsy has opened so many doors and been great at showcasing unique art and handmade goods from around the world. I love that. I have met so many awesome people and companies via Etsy. Without Etsy, it would have taken much longer to get to where we are today, and for that I am forever grateful!

What are your hopes for Etsy's future?
I would love to see some additional third party applications that improve and enhance the Etsy experience. Otherwise I just hope that more people shop on here and purchase stationery from Earmark...ha ha!

Dajellybaby's Favorites: 1823 Pages (and Counting)

Why do you heart things on Etsy?
I usually heart things on Etsy that catch my eye. I do this for several reasons. The first one is because I am planning to purchase that particular item. I often check Etsy quickly throughout the day, and if I spot something that I like, I may not be able to purchase it then and there. Hearting the item ensures that I have easy access to it later, and it means I don't have to remember or record the item or seller details — which is great because I have a terrible memory!

Another reason is because I really like the item and/or the seller's store, and I want to come back to it at a later date. I enjoy browsing the listings of items that I like, and I particularly love browsing the stores of favorite sellers who intrigue me. With a lot of the items that I really like, I enjoy revisiting the listing and having a good look at the item again, the different listing photos, etc. This also sometimes helps me to make up my mind as to whether I want to purchase the item. I find a lot of the pictures and descriptions fantastic and very alluring — it's hard not to fall in love. I often fall in love with the way a seller has marketed their product.

I also heart items or sellers' stores for future reference, for example, ideas for upcoming birthday gifts.

Do you actively share your Etsy Favorites with anyone?
Not really. I have shared the details of the Etsy site itself with others. I have also shared the details of particular Etsy sellers from whom I have purchased items. This usually occurs after people notice an Etsy purchased item and ask where I got it.

Do you look at or follow other people's Favorites? Would you care to share any of their names?
I don't really follow other people's favorites. I have actually only checked out five other people's favorites, and they are five Etsy sellers that I have purchased from in the past. I love these particular sellers, and I really admire their sense of style, their personality, their designs, etc. I thought I might be able to find some really fascinating and intriguing items from their favorites, as they are quite fascinating and intriguing people. They include Monique, a.k.a. ouma; Jessi Taylor, a.k.a. jessitaylor; Christine, a.k.a. BloomStudios; Allison, a.k.a. MmeFortuna and Katie, a.k.a. ktjean.

Do you buy a lot of your Favorites? If not, what's the purpose behind bookmarking them?
I do buy a lot of my favorites, although I think that I bookmark a lot more than I buy. I really wish that it was the other way around! The reason that I think I have so many favorites comes down to wishful thinking. I really love the designs, concepts and ideas of a lot of the items on Etsy, and I have found in the past that if I don't heart an item, I have trouble remembering any details to find it again. I find it's very convenient having a "Favorites section" of my profile.

What's your favorite thing about Etsy?
I love two things actually about the Etsy site. The first is the gorgeous sense of community and the friends that I have made since I joined. The second is the easy access I have to so many amazing and talented artists who handmake and/or collect, recycle and celebrate vintage and homemade goods. If it wasn't for Etsy, I wouldn't have access to these really talented folk. I would still be purchasing mass-produced, store-bought items!

What are your hopes for Etsy's future?
I'd really love to see Etsy continue to grow and blossom, welcoming even more fabulous sellers and items, and for sellers themselves to see a continued rise in new customers and buyers. In spite of any growth, I would really like to see the community side of Etsy continue — where customer service, the sense of trust, friendship and kinship are still paramount. I would really hate to see Etsy become like eBay, where both sellers and buyers can often be exploited. I think Etsy is wonderful and the Etsy site, its team and its sellers deserve every success.

Tech Updates: Share Your Favorites

Today we rolled out a number of improvements to Etsy's popular Favorites feature. These enhancements are designed to make Etsy Favorites more usable, visible and sharable.

Use 'em

Sold items can now be added to your Favorites. Sometimes you just aren’t quick enough, and an item you want is sold out by the time you see it. You can still add it to your Favorites. Views and hearts now continue to accumulate on items even after they’ve been sold.
Tip: Convo the seller to see if they can make another item for you or if they're planning to list another.

No more grey boxes to delete. Many Etsy community members have complained in the past about the clutter of anonymous grey items in their Favorites with the text “Listing expired or removed.” This would occur when an item expired, was being edited, or belonged to a shop in Vacation Mode. These grey boxes are no more. Here’s what happens now:

When an item you’ve hearted expires, it will be removed from your Favorites.
When an item you’ve hearted is being edited by the seller, it will not appear in your Favorites while the editing is in progress. When the editing is complete, the item will return to the spot you had it in your Favorites.
When an item you’ve hearted goes into Vacation Mode, it will remain in your Favorites — you will just be unable to purchase the item until the seller returns from vacation.

See 'em

A “heart counter” has been added to item pages. You can now see the number of hearts for any item, active or sold, along with views in the new “stats” section on the lower right of item pages.
Tip: If an item gets blogged about and then sells, it can still show off its street cred with more and more hearts and views.

Show off your Favorites on your Etsy Profile. You now have the option to display the last six items you added to your Favorites on your Etsy Profile page! These items will be displayed below the "Favorite Materials" section of your Profile. To turn this feature on, sign in to Etsy and proceed to Your Etsy > Public Profile. Check the checkbox at the bottom of the page next to “Favorite Items” and click "Save Changes" to start showing the world the cool stuff you find!

Share 'em

Don’t keep your Favorites to yourself! (Unless you want to.) Now when you sign in to Etsy and proceed to Your Etsy > Favorites, you will see a link for a new Share widget on the upper right. Pop this open for options to share your list of Favorites with your friends or with the world. With this widget you can easily share your collection of Favorites on Twitter or Facebook, embed them on your blog, or copy and paste the web address for your public Favorites page.

Tech Updates: Facebook Connect

Today we made it easier to share your Etsy activity with your friends on Facebook, a social networking site many Etsians use.

When you sign in to Etsy, you will see a link at the top of the page (next to "Conversations") for "Facebook Connect." Click that link to activate an overlay that you can use to establish a connection with Facebook.

Once you're connected with Facebook, you will see your Facebook Profile Picture at the top of every page on Etsy.

What can I do while I'm connected with Facebook on Etsy?

You can share your Etsy activity with your friends! When you list an item or heart an item (add an item to your Etsy Favorites) while connected with Facebook, you will see an option to share that action on Facebook in the form of a story published to your Facebook News Feed. Click the "Post this item to Facebook" link to activate a pop-up from Facebook with a preview of your story before you publish:

These links to share your activity on Facebook will only be visible while you're connected with Facebook, and all posts from Etsy to Facebook are made explicitly by you. You can disconnect with Facebook at any time via the "Facebook" link at the top of the page. If you're not interested in connecting with Facebook from Etsy, you can remove the Facebook option by clicking the "don't show again" link on the Facebook Connect overlay.

FAQs

What is Facebook Connect?
Facebook Connect allows you to bring your Facebook account into Etsy, so you can share what you're doing on Etsy with your friends on Facebook. You have complete control over what is shared.

How do I connect with Facebook on Etsy?
After signing in to Etsy, you will see a link for Facebook Connect at the top of the page, next to "Conversations." Click this link and then click "Connect with Facebook" to establish a connection to Facebook.

What can I do while I'm connected to Facebook on Etsy?
You can share select actions you take on Etsy with your friends on Facebook. These actions currently include adding an item to your Etsy Favorites ("hearting" an item) and listing an item on Etsy.

After hearting an item or listing an item, you will see an option to post the item to Facebook. Clicking that link activates a pop-up from Facebook where you can preview and annotate your post before publishing the item to your Facebook profile and Facebook friends' home pages.

Can I post items I've renewed or relisted on Facebook?
At this time Facebook Connect on Etsy allows you to post newly listed items on Facebook but not renewed or relisted items.

Does Etsy automatically post to my Facebook profile?
No. All posts to your Facebook Profile and News Feed from Etsy are made explicitly by you.

How do I disconnect from Facebook?
You will know when you are connected to Facebook on Etsy because your Facebook Profile Picture will appear at the top of all Etsy pages next to a "Facebook" link. Click this link and then click "Log out of Facebook" to terminate your connection with Facebook. This will log you out of Facebook completely.

I have no interest in connecting with Facebook. Can I remove the Facebook Connect link so I don't have to see it when I sign in to Etsy?
Yes. To remove the Facebook Connect link, click it to activate the overlay and then click "don't show again." The Facebook Connect option will no longer appear when you sign in to Etsy.

If you change your mind, you can re-enable the Facebook Connect option by going to Your Etsy > Account Info. On the Account Info page, you will find a "Settings" section where you can enable or disable Facebook Connect.

I signed in to Etsy and I was already connected with Facebook. Why?
This occurs when you sign in to Etsy while being logged into Facebook, if you've connected with Facebook through Etsy before.

I use the Etsy Shop application on Facebook. Is Facebook Connect the same thing?
Facebook Connect is separate from the Etsy Shop application. You can still use the Etsy Shop Facebook application and other Etsy Facebook applications. Facebook Connect allows you to share actions you take on Etsy, such as the items you list or add to your Favorites, with your friends on Facebook.

I have a Business/Fan Page for my Etsy shop on Facebook. Can I use Facebook Connect to publish my Etsy activity on my Page?
Not at this time. Facebook Connect on Etsy allows you to publish Etsy activity on your Facebook Profile, but not your Pages (sometimes called Fan Pages or Business Pages). We plan to enable this functionality in the future.

One of Etsy's Most Hearted: Elsita

For Valentine's Day, we at Etsy's blog thought we'd seek out the Etsy members who are the most beloved (or rather, be-hearted). We tracked six of out of the top one hundred most-hearted users and sought them out for interviews. They were totally surprised and pleased to find out! The sixth (and last!) in this series is Elsita.

Elsa Mora (her nickname is Elsita) is a multimedia artist living in Los Angeles, California with her husband Bill, who is a film producer, their children Natalie (5) and Diego (3) and Bill's son Miro (16). Elsa was born and raised in the island of Cuba, where she graduated from Art School in 1990 (see her story here). Elsa shows her work at galleries all over the world and she also spends lots of time doing family-related things. Elsa runs her own Etsy store named Elsita where she sells prints, toys, jewelry and other handmade creations. She also has a blog.

Tell us how you first got involved with Etsy.

I was lucky to find Etsy in July of 2007 while googling the word "handmade," and I haven't been able to get away from it ever since. I tried to explain how I became an Etsy prisoner with the illustration in my shop banner. (A very happy prisoner! :) )

What's your favorite Etsy feature?

I love the Pounce feature. I use it whenever I have a chance because I get to see the undiscovered sellers. I am always excited to see people that are starting a new business; it makes me happy. I like to send supporting e-mails to new Etsians whenever I have a chance because I remember how much it meant to me when someone did the same thing in 2007.

How do you think you became so beloved in the Etsy community? (You've got a lot of hearts!)

I think that if you deeply love what you do and if you're willing to share it with everyone out there, then whatever you give is going to come back to you in the form of little hearts. I want to thank every person that has hearted my store: it means the world to me!

Who are your favorite Etsians?

As I write these words, I have a total of 506 stores in my list of favorites, and the list will keep growing. It is hard for me to mention only a few favorite Etsians, because I love sooo many of them for sooo many different reasons. Behind each store there is a story, a real person and that's what I love about this community: the diversity and the uniqueness of every member. But I will mention two Etsians that have a very special place in my heart:

1. arthursimo
Arthur is a young artist. He is autistic (just like my 3-year-old son) and he has the most amazing imagination. I have been in love with his creations since day one and I immediately became his collector. Just take a look at his store and don't miss the explanations of his paintings — they are amazing. He lives in Florida with his Mom, and I am planning to meet them one day.

2. knitalatte
Behind this store there is an extraordinary woman. I met Margie through my blog. We became good friends and then she started her own blog. I have seen her imagination and creativity explode thanks to the energy that she has gotten from the Etsy community. This energy is all over the Internet, making all of the creative people a strong and important force. She recently opened her Etsy store with great success and I want to wish her and everyone who is starting an Etsy store all the best!

What are you doing this Valentine's Day?

I am planning to eat lots of little chocolate kisses, the ones that have the cute pointy top. And I am planning to enjoy the whole day with my family.

Emily Martin, alias The Black Apple, is a twenty five year old girl who lives among the giant fir trees of Portland, OR. Her fellow adventurers in this land of oversized trees are a boy named Josiah and a boy-cat named Miette. Scribbling, stitching, painting, and baking are certainly the things she does best. Also, it is important to note that she loves toy pianos, vintage sewing notions, documentaries, Little Golden Books, swans, and that her fondest wish is to live in a house in the forest. I heard about it via Leah Kramer of Craftster fame in 2005, and since I had just graduated from art school and was crafting like a maniac, I thought I'd see what all the fuss was about. Little did I know...

Hmm...I do like the Storque. The "Time Machines" are neat, too!

How do you think you became so beloved in the Etsy community? (You've got a lot of hearts!)
Goodness, I don't know! I feel very lucky for all the love that has come my way, though. And I think I've just been around a long time (long by Etsy standards). I'm a bad penny.

Ashley Goldberg, 27, and Drew Bell, 30, are creative partners in crime, living and loving in Portland, Oregon. They live with Isadora the cat and mounds of shipping supplies. Oh — and they work really well together.

Tell us how you first got involved with Etsy.
I was looking through craft blogs for the first time and many of them were talking about this new site "Etsy". I decided to check it out and was just amazed at the marketplace and community that I found. I joined (and purchased things) that very evening. It's been amazing to see Etsy grow and evolve to what it is now.

What's your favorite Etsy feature?

Oooh, that's a tough one. My favorite feature is... RELIST, an oldie but a goody. It may sound like an obvious choice, but if you have multiple items that are the same you gotta have it.

How do you think you became so beloved in the Etsy community? (You've got a lot of hearts!)
Well, first, thank you, thank you, thank you to anyone who has hearted me. I am so flattered to be one of "the top 100 most hearted". Certainly, timing has helped me out. I have been a part of Etsy a long time so I have had time to build up hearts. BUT, more importantly, I hope that I make products that people enjoy and offer customer service that keeps them coming back.

Who are your favorite Etsians?

HARDEST QUESTION EVER. They are so many talented and kind Etsians. My favorites are those who won me over initially by making awesome stuff but who are also amazing people who I have connected with on a personal level. Etsy is a great place to find friends. :) Those folks are:

- Shauna and Steven from Something's Hiding in Here. My jaw drops every time they create something new.
- Matte Stephens and his lovely wife Vivian of MatteArt. Their generosity and kindness is as endless as their combined talent...and they are cat people(!)
- Ryan from LittlePutBooks...who I will never be able to thank enough for a HUGE favor she did for me about a year and a half ago. That Ryan, she's good stuff.

I could go on and on but I will stop with a person who is not only my "co-worker" (I like to call everyone on Etsy my "co-workers") but has become a close friend. After a cross country move for both of us, we are in the same city: Miss Emily Martin of theblackapple and her partner in crime, Josiah.

What are you doing this Valentine's Day?
On Valentine's Day I will be spending the day my better half, Drew. Each Valentine's Day we try and do something silly/crafty/fun/memorable. A few years ago we went to a paint-your-own pottery place and made things for each other. It was us and 12 year old girls and their moms. It was ridiculous and the best. This year, I am leaning towards something outdoors. Maybe driving to the ocean and spending the day. (You hear that, Drew?)

News from the Etsy Labs: 2/9 Craft Night

Have plans on Monday night? Well, you do now! Dust off your crafty pants and come join us for our weekly Craft Night at the Etsy Labs in Brooklyn. Craft Night occurs every Monday from 4-8pm EST at 325 Gold Street, 3rd floor in Brooklyn, New York. Craft Night is a time to make things, learn new skills, and make new friends.

This week, on Monday, February 9th, we'll be creating needle felted hearts in time for Valentine's Day with the wonderful Nguyen Le of KnitKnit, who will demonstrate the skill. You can use your felted hearts as necklace pendants, pins, or as a fuzzy Valentine! We will also pull out all of our felting needles, wool, and ribbon. This project is open to people with all levels of needle felting experience, though adult supervision for children is suggested, as the needles are very sharp! If you have felting needles or particular type of wool you'd like to use, please bring that along too. We will be providing supplies as well.

Not in Brooklyn? Join us for a live broadcast and demo from Craft Night online in the Virtual Labs. Click here to see what time 4pm EST is around the world (though we usually take some time to get settled and ready to go). If you are attending Craft Night virtually this week and would like to craft along with us, you'll need a few supplies:

John W. Golden has been selling his art since he was 11 years old and his photographs since he was 19 years old. With a degree in graphic design, he spent 18 years creating illustrations, layouts and animation for clients such as Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, PBS Kids, E!, TNT, TBS, Animal Planet and a host of others. He lives with his wife, three kids and Wire Fox Terrier on the coast of North Carolina. John creates his artwork with the computer using an array of tools to replicate traditional methods digitally. He makes artist's reproductions of his work, as well as jewelry featuring his art and robot plushies. In his spare time, John likes to skateboard, camp, kayak, listen to music and spend time with his family.

Tell us how you first got involved with Etsy.

In late 2005, my sister-in-law sent a link for a mutual friend's shop to my wife. I was trying to transition away from the long hours of broadcast design to selling my art full-time. I opened shop in June 2006, and before too long, I couldn't do both the design work and Etsy. Etsy won out.

What's your favorite Etsy feature?

I'm really digging the web analytics right now.

How do you think you became so beloved in the Etsy community? (You've got a lot of hearts!)

I have been very fortunate that a large number of people have connected with the subject matter I choose to depict. On the more tangible side of things, the amount of work I have, the variety of subject matter and styles, and the fact that I offer work that appeals to men, women and children allows me to reach a large audience.

We tracked six of out of the top 100 most-hearted members and sought them out for interviews. They were totally surprised and pleased to find out! The first in this series is Luxedeluxe.

Adrienne aka Luxedeluxe is 28 and from California. She currently lives just outside Edinburgh with her Scottish husband. Aside from making jewelry at all hours of the day, she enjoys cooking, eating, finding new recipes and going on long walks with her dogs. Adrienne misses being near her family while living in the UK, so she tries to visit twice a year.

Tell us how you first got involved with Etsy.
After quitting a job in visual merchandising, I started making jewelry. I stumbled upon Etsy in 2006 while looking for online venues to sell my wares from home, as I was moving back and forth from the UK to the US.

What's your favorite Etsy feature?
I love checking out what people are buying in the 'just sold' Pounce and Time Machine 2 features.

How do you think you became so beloved in the Etsy community? (You've got a lot of hearts!)

Tech Updates: Favorites in Your Shopping Cart

Attention shoppers!

We heart hearts, so as mentioned in CEO Maria Thomas's article last week, we've decided to share the love in a very important corner of the site: checkout. Now, as you begin the checkout process, you can dip into your Favorites and add them to your Cart.

After signing in, look right below your Cart under the checkout button for the last three available items you added to your Favorites:

Click the 'Add to Cart' button on the items in your Favorites to add them to your Cart right away! Want another look before you buy? Click the item images to peruse the listing pages again.

Or, if you decide you can't buy an item then and there, you can move items from your Cart to your Favorites, rather than removing them and forever losing track of the cool stuff you've found—just click the 'Move to Favorites' link next to the items in your Cart. Later, you can come back to your Favorites and purchase when the time is right. But be warned: we all know the sadness of passing on that one-of-a-kind item when we had the chance and finding it sold when we return!

More improvements to the checkout process are in the works—stay tuned.

Etsy Finds: My Favorites' Favorites

Did you see the changes to Etsy navigation this week? When you're signed in, there is a link straight to your Favorites right there at the top left corner. I don't know about you, but I look at my Etsy Favorites a lot, and this change makes checking out the shops I like that much easier.

But what I love even more than shopping from shops I've "hearted" is peeking at other people's picks. In every profile on Etsy, you can find a link to Favorites — and if the Etsian doesn't have them set to private, you can catch a glimpse of all the great items and shops they've bookmarked.

I started with a cute shop I noticed this week and made a sort of daisy chain by checking out the things each shop had in their Favorites. Here are nine cool items that I hadn't seen before!

Tech Updates: Bringing Favorites to the Forefront

You may have noticed some small changes to Etsy's header (also known as the global navigation) at the top of every page. As mentioned in CEO Maria Thomas's article yesterday, we've been making some adjustments:

The link for Alchemy, the space on Etsy where buyers can post requests for custom items, has been changed to 'Custom' to make it clearer to potential buyers that they can request custom items. The feature is still named Alchemy; we've just changed the word on the navigation link to more clearly describe the function of the feature.
Links for 'Login' and 'Logout' have been changed to 'Sign In' and 'Sign Out.'
The link for Invite a Friend, formerly on the upper right, has been removed. You can still get there through the Referrals page inside Your Etsy.
And most importantly, when you're signed in to Etsy, a link to your Favorites appears next to your Cart on the upper left.

The Favorites function on Etsy is an important one. It enables buyers and sellers to keep track of the stuff they like and discover what others like, too. By keeping track of your friends' Favorites or your favorite sellers' Favorites (look for the RSS feed on your friend's Favorite Sellers page), you can make some amazing discoveries. We're working on new ways to harness the power of members' Favorites and all the hearting and curating that takes place across the Etsy community every day. In the meantime, we wanted to make it easier for you to get to your Favorites.

Etsy Finds: Best of the Week

Each day, I get a ton of emails pointing out new and notable items on Etsy, I click on the homepage an average of 8,904 times a day, and I pore over an ever-growing list of blogs that have somehow become daily must-reads. There is a lot of incredible stuff to look at! So, as I criss-cross and dot-to-dot Etsy throughout my week, I have a simple technique: favorite and run. Which is exactly what it sounds like: I quickly click "Add to Favorites," and move on.

But then the best part of my Etsy week is on the weekends when I allow myself a good chunk of time to review what I've bookmarked. So to start your week, here are my top nine items from last week's Etsy travels.

I love haunting peoples' favorites on Etsy. With over 150,000 shops on the site nowadays, it can be a tiny bit difficult to keep track of all the best stuff. But take heart, my lazy readers: in the right sidebar of a person's shop or profile, between "Profile" and "Feedback," you can sneak a peek at their "Favorites" — both items and shops. Whenever I'm at a loss for things to feature, I pore through my favorites' favorites.

Today, I decided to make a daisy chain of favorite items, shop to shop to shop. I hope you like it!

Etsy Finds: Java Jacket

Ok, it's the day before Valentine's Day and you've realized that if you don't come up with something good quickly, you're in big trouble. Your sweetie likes coffee, right? Kasanika to the rescue with a java jacket for your caffeine addict! Also, since you know Valentine's day is tomorrow and there is no way it will arrive in time, make sure to print out a picture so you can say, "You're getting this for Valentines Day!"

I asked Kasanika and about the inspiration for her java jackets. Since she's a pretty fresh Etsy seller, I also asked her how it's been going so far. Here's what she had to say.

"I started making these out of guilt for often forgetting to bring my own reusable coffee mug while on the go and seeing the boxes full of cardboard sleeves at my local coffee shop destined only to end up in the trash. I also have a passion for felting (mostly my own crochet), but I love to felt old wool sweaters scored at the thrift shop too.

I am thrilled each time someone chooses one of my java jackets, and often sad to see them leave. Each one is a unique piece of work and I get a lot of enjoyment from making and selling them selling here on Etsy.

I've been on Etsy almost two months and I find it an excellent showcase for my work. As a busy working mom of two toddlers, I only have the time to work on my crafting during my long commute (half of that being by ferry) and during the slow hours at my job as a 911 operator."

One of Etsy's Most Hearted: circularaccesories

For Valentine's Day, we at The Storque thought we'd seek out the Etsy members who are the most beloved (or rather, be-hearted). We tracked five of out of the top twenty most-hearted users and sought them out for interviews. They were totally surprised and pleased to find out! The fifth, and last, in this series is circularaccessories.

Alison Albright has resided in Baton Rouge, Louisiana all her life, except for a few years of college where she enjoyed living in New Orleans. She loves to work with her hands and enjoys working with new materials and learning new processes. Alison makes hand-screenprinted wares for her Etsy store, mostly clothing, with designs that are very much inspired by her surroundings. As a formal student of biochemistry and landscape architecture, elements of science and nature can be found in most of her work. When she is not printing, you can find Alison in her garden playing with her son or strolling around town people watching.

Tell us how you first got involved with Etsy.
I was actually "recruited" by an Etsy user while selling on another online venue. I am so grateful that she guided me here. Once I managed to get my first listing up, I never looked back!

What's your favorite Etsy feature?
My favorite Etsy feature is probably the treasury. I enjoy searching through the funny titles and browsing the beautiful collections made by other members. I have found so many new favorites this way and given out many of my hearts.

How do you think you became so beloved in the Etsy community? (You've got a lot of hearts!)
What I really love about Etsy is the community. I try to participate in the forums when I have free time and have met some wonderful people there. When anyone asks for mentoring help, I will give the best advice I can and always treat everyone with respect. I really believe that what goes around comes around. I have a lot of love to share, so maybe that is why there is some returned.

Do you have an Etsy crush? If so, who?
I must say my heart is about to burst from all the love I feel right now from the Etsy community so I would say I have an Etsy crush on Etsy, but if I had to single one user out it would be SalmonStreetStudio; I have even professed my love for her in the forums! She can always make me smile even when things are rough, and is one of the most encouraging and helpful sellers I know.

What are you doing for Valentine's Day?

I'd been trying to get my work out with little success. I discovered Etsy by accident while I was looking for a gift for a friend. I saw some really nice works here and decided to give Etsy a try. It's been almost two years now and things are going well for me.

I'm glad and feel honored that people love my work. I'm also a shopper so I try to come up with the products that I would like to see on the market. I like clean and simple design and that what I came up with.

Tell us how you first got involved with Etsy.
Late one night (over two years ago) I was reading in some "work from home mom" forum, and saw Etsy mentioned as a new site to open up a shop. I hoped right over to check things out, and opened up my store a few minutes later. I have been there everyday since.

What's your favorite Etsy feature?
Though there are definitely some extra cool ways to search on Etsy, I am simple, and just love the front page. I find most of my new favorite items through it. I am happy to discover something new each time I look.

How do you think you became so beloved in the Etsy community? (You've got a lot of hearts!)
I think I have the best job, and love what I do, and hopefully that comes across in my photographs. But, I also try to put just as much effort into promoting my shop...because what good is a great store, if no one knows it exists.
I am really thankful to have been supported by some great publications and blogs in the last few years who have helped me spread the word.

Do you have an Etsy crush? If so, who?
I must have a thing for girls named Betsy, because I could buy up the entire stores of Betsy Walton
and Betsy from Foundling. I am always excited to see their new products, and they have been the sweetest sellers to buy from.

What are you doing for Valentine's Day?
Probably baking treats with my kids during the day, and snuggling up with the cutest boy ever (my husband of six years) in the evening. We don't really care too much about Valentine's day. But, I love any day that I can use as an excuse to order carry-out for dinner.

Working in sterling silver and gold, Elizabeth Scott makes jewelry with simple forms and detailed textures. She uses some of her favorite plant images (hydrangea petals, ginkgo leaves, birch bark and aspen leaves) to design botanical jewelry with contemporary simplicity. After graduating with degrees in drawing and printmaking, Elizabeth began making jewelry while teaching, and it grew into a full-time business. She lives in rural upstate New York.

Tell us how you first got involved with Etsy.
In 2006 I was making my jewelry part time while teaching, and was looking for a way to sell it online, and I found Etsy on Google. I'd always wanted to do something art-related full time, and Etsy has made that possible.

What's your favorite Etsy feature?
Treasury. No, Pounce. I can't decide.

How do you think you became so beloved in the Etsy community? (You've got a lot of hearts!)
I design my jewelry to be simple to wear every day, and I think it helps to sell something that people need. I haven't done any advertising apart from a group ad with EtsyMetal this winter and a few times on the showcase, but I've been on blogs like design*sponge. Most of my buyers are new Etsy users. I'm not sure exactly where they're coming from, but I can tell that Etsy is growing every day.

Do you have an Etsy crush? If so, who?
Since there are so many more women than men on Etsy it makes that sort of difficult, but I've been a member of the EtsyMetal street team for a long time, and have met some amazing metalsmiths. We're all so supportive of each other and I don't know what I'd do without them. A few of them are guys, like downtothewiredesigns and one of our new members, blindspotjewellery. I really like their work - does that count? (Ed. note: It does!)

What are you doing for Valentine's Day?
I've never done much for Valentine;s Day. I really enjoy making gifts for special occasions, but I'm happy with something simple and inexpensive myself. I'm hoping for an ice cream cake.

One of Etsy's Most Hearted: Sudlow

Rachael Sudlow's style emerges from her rural Kansas home, bringing together the natural animals and elements of the farm and a love for brightly colored beads and stones. Oftentimes designed a little tongue-in-cheek, her work is entirely hand-fabricated with the details and love that give handmade work that extra bit of special. She graduated in 2005 with a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, but returned to Kansas shortly thereafter to make art and teach at the local Arts Center.

Tell us how you first got involved with Etsy.
I was working a desk job doing web design and scrolling around online (thus not working), and I read a mention of Etsy as a place to sell handmade work, so I started playing around and listing a few pieces I'd done earlier in the year. I'd just graduated from art school, so it was a good push to keep making work.

What's your favorite Etsy feature?
I think the combination of Treasuries and the gorgeous front pages they produce would be one of my favorites. (Too bad I can never snag a Treasury though!)

How do you think you became so beloved in the Etsy community? (You've got a lot of hearts!)
I think having products that appeal to a wide range of people has worked well for me. I like to make pieces that are both quirky and iconic. 'Whimsical' is often used to describe my work. There's nothing better than creating a piece that makes people smile. I also love custom orders where I work with a customer to create something new. It's inspiring and I know the recipient is excited to get something specially made for them. Good photos never hurt either!

Do you have an Etsy crush? If so, who?
I love my fellow EtsyMetal folks like crazy. They've been a great support group through the year! They've really pushed me to try new techniques and develop my products and business more.

What are you doing for Valentine's Day?
Well, that's a Thursday, so I'll be filling orders in the morning, working at my Arts Center shop in the afternoon and then taking a silkscreen class at night. Busy day for business, so maybe I'll make Friday a date night.
