Tech Update: New Checkout Updates

As we mentioned in the previous Checkout Update, we're working to make Checkout a simpler, smoother process for shoppers, and we are rolling changes out gradually to make sure they improve buyer conversion. ("Conversion" is the percentage of shoppers who complete Checkout.) Improving buyer conversion helps more shoppers get a taste of Etsy and leads to more orders for Etsy sellers. In short, more happy Etsy members!

Today we're rolling out a change to a small percentage of Etsy traffic that removes non-essential elements from the header of Checkout pages, to make the process clearer and faster. Simplifying the page header in the Checkout process is an e-commerce practice used by many great shopping sites, such as Amazon and Apple.

Here's a preview of the shipping information page with a simplified header:

We're going to see if this change makes it easier for shoppers to complete Checkout, and we'll make adjustments as we learn more. If we're certain the changes improve the Checkout experience for shoppers, we'll roll the changes out to all of Etsy's traffic.

We'll update this post as we learn more.

Tech Update: Checkout Updates

Checkout is a core experience on Etsy, one which we are working to improve. Our goals for Checkout are to make it easy for buyers to purchase items on Etsy and to reduce the occurrence of buyers who complete Checkout on Etsy but do not complete payment on PayPal.

Today, we completed the first phase of updating the Etsy Checkout process. This first phase consists of improving messaging. Our changes include:

Updating the language on each page of Checkout to better inform buyers on the steps required to checkout.
Changing the wording on the third page of Checkout. This page is now messaged to the buyer as the "Final Review" page. Also, the button to continue is now called "Commit To Buy" — driving home the point that they still need to pay, whether with PayPal or any other method.
Updating the design of the last page of Checkout. See below for a screenshot. When using PayPal, we now tell the buyer how many payments are remaining and clearly provide a payment status on each item.

Looking into the future, we are planning a number of improvements to the Checkout process. For now, we hope you check out the new Checkout as you're checking out with some great handmade and vintage items!

Featured Buyers: Sneak Attacks from the Handmade Movement

Do you know how to do the happy dance? You will soon! Today Michael Phipps of phippsart.etsy.com shares his inspiration for the "Sneak Attacks" community project. Read on!

After several years of filling vending machines and stacking cans of food, I quit my job so my constant desire to create could be unleashed. Now on any given day I might be climbing scaffolding to work on a mural or using a microscopic brush on a book cover painting. When my sister introduced me to Etsy that first year as a full time artist, my mind started racing with ideas, and I decided I wanted to screenprint artwork onto shirts. Having screenprinted in college and then later in a friend's studio (where my darkroom was also the bathroom for an indie rock venue), it was a natural transition. I still remember making those first few sales on Etsy. Even now, EVERY sale is a thrill, but those first several were special. The feeling back then was powerful enough to positively affect my entire day.

Several months later, the memory of that exhilaration got me thinking of ways I might help other shop owners feel the same excitement, so I started a thread in the Etsy Forums entitled "Make Someone's Day," encouraging others to find shops without sales and to be their first sale. This went on for a few weeks and was even carried on by other Etsy sellers, some of whom went on to form the Etsy Patrons Team. I also figured that if it were a thrill to get one sale, how great would it be to suddenly have a whole swarm of business in just one day?

Thus the Sneak Attack was born. I started a thread asking if anyone wanted to take part in a "Sneak Attack" and explained the concept. It didn't take long before we already targeted two shops and had two more in the works. The excitement on the part of the shop owners AND the shoppers was so great that I knew I wanted to make this a regular occurrence. I quickly threw together the bones of a web site, which included a schedule of upcoming "attacks." (The site's now been completely revamped.) The response was overwhelming. For about a month we held Sneak Attacks every weekday, but that proved exhausting! So ever since we've been doing them Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The Sneak Attacks are no one-man operation. I couldn't do this all by myself — not even close. In fact, each "attack" is sponsored by another Etsy seller or buyer, who chooses the shop and coordinates it all. They start a thread in the forums, which serves as a sort of pre-game party before the appointed time. My biggest help through all this has been VintageEmbellishment. She's done more to promote and support the movement than one could even imagine. There's a long list of others who have made all of this possible.

I'm often asked how shops are chosen as "victims" of the attacks. First and foremost, no one should volunteer to be at the receiving end of a Sneak Attack. That's about the best way to NOT be chosen. It wouldn't be a "Sneak Attack" then, would it?! The shops need to have few or no sales, have been around for at least two weeks (preferably longer), they need to have some recent activity evident in their shops, and they need to have a good amount of quality, affordable products. We sadly pass by a lot of shops because they have blurry or dark pictures, incomplete descriptions, or nothing has been added or renewed for months.

Since the end of September, The Handmade Movement has sponsored 67 attacks on a total of 81 shops, resulting in 973 sales! That amounts to about $6000 worth of products bought from these up-and-coming shops over the course of just over four months. Here are the stories of just a handful of those shops.

Rachelherzog: "I had started my Etsy shop, Tickleworm, in September 2008. I put up seven items and kept working and adding more from there. (You check your shop like you check the phone for messages when you are expecting someone to call.)

In October, I was adding items, checked back and one of them was gone — at first I thought I didn't load it correctly (operator error), but then more items were gone. I saw I had a convo message, checked it, read it, and still it took me a second...I just couldn't believe I went from zero sales to a bunch in 10 minutes. I checked the thread and was reading what everyone was saying about my items...I couldn't believe it! It felt so great! Even if people didn't buy, they were saying such nice things! I honestly had tears in my eyes! PEOPLE WERE BUYING MY THINGS, THINGS I MADE!

The 'Sneak Attack' was my big break, so to speak. It kept me making more, better, different items! So now, I return every so often to buy from a shop that is being 'Sneak Attacked' because, well, it feels so good to do that for someone — and you get a great product."

Desertnana: "For almost three years I was a more-than-merry Etsy shopper. I finally took the plunge and opened my shop, but felt like a resident of Whoville in Horton Hears a Who. Desert Nanas Retro Ranch was full of goods, and I was like a Christmas elf reading, shooting, and uploading. (On dial up, mind you...) Then on December 8th, after an hour of shooting more items for the shop, I clicked on Retro Ranch to see 5 new orders! As I read the first order, I suddenly thought 'Wait-just-one-second...Did my sister do a big sympathy buy after listening to my repeated 'Steven Colbert fist-to-the-heaven' laments...??!' But no: the buyer's name is Heather (aka Winemakerssister), and in the message to the seller, it said, 'SNEAK ATTACK.'

My personal orbit shifted its axis, and I danced the desert happy dance! I shouted like Sally Field in her infamous 1980s Oscars Speech, 'They like me!' All of the hours and days of banging my head against walls of technological confusion were not in vain! I have customers!!! WinemakersSister was the first of this 'mysterious group' (Hautetotes, VintageEmbellishment, The Copper Cauldron, KreatedbyKelly), to respond to my mail, and I was not surprised to learn that a volunteer group of Etsy folk do this as a weekly hobby to surprise and encourage new shops!

With this wonderful burst of encouragement I went forth, forever changed by the kindness of these lovely ladies, having gained a dear friend (love you Heather) and wanting to share and give the same kind of boost to new and struggling beginners."

FartsyArts: "The 'Sneak Attack' is one of the coolest ideas to support new shops. KitsandCaboodles sponsored my 'Sneak Attack.' I am sure a lot of beginner Etsy sellers can relate when I say it takes a lot of hard work and outside the box thinking to get your shop noticed. Having a handful (or more) of people visit the shop AND purchase an item is a double bonus!! When I got the e-mail that I was going to be a 'victim' of a 'Sneak Attack,' I ran to my boyfriend in utter excitement and screamed, 'I don't know what this is but it's going to be FUN!' Once I realized what the whole game was, my eyes were glued on the clock and my finger was on my mouse ready to reset my browser!

...I am a regular visitor to the site to see who the next 'victim' is. It is a great promotional tool and so much fun to partake in as a seller and a buyer. I have participated in a past 'Sneak Attack' and the thanks you get from the seller spells happiness and it feels just great, and you get something cool for yourself too!"




Monkeysalwayslook: "I was, of course, completely thrown off guard when I finally realized that I was a victim of a sneak attack. I can't really describe the feelings I felt except amazement, joy, surprise and overwhelming gratitude. Before the sneak attack, my store only had two sales. In my feedback to my buyers I said that this little gesture brought tears to my eyes, and when I think about it now, it still brings tears to my eyes. The generosity of complete strangers and the purchases that they made gave my little store the momentum and boost that has carried on to this day. Since the sneak attack, my store has had a steady stream of sales.

I think this is what the handmade movement is all about: sharing in each others love, hard work, and care that is put into each and every item."


warpeDesign: "Being 'Sneak Attacked' caught me completely by surprise. I'd only been on Etsy for a month and was still on the low end of the learning curve. It was a challenge to figure out how to make my cards look special and if I could catch someone's interest among the ton of other cards that were posted every day. My cards are subtle, so it's hard to make them jump out from a tiny thumbnail. The 'Sneak Attack' was a wonderful affirmation that I had something special and that I was showcasing it the right way."

WontonLove: "It was a complete surprise. I was fairly new to Etsy at the time and never did I expect such craft activism to take place! The fundamental part of the idea touched my crafty heart. It's nice to think that anyone can sneak up on you, from around the world, when you least expect it, and you get a bunch of sales to boot!"

Guest Curator: Marichelle of Heart Handmade

It was on a sunny June afternoon in 2007 when Marichelle Burdman (aka wunderlust and marichelle), realized that spending 30 years working in a gray cube wasn't for her. So she waved goodbye to the corporate world and embarked on a journey to discover her true passion in life. At first, she set her sights on opening a shop, but this quickly evolved into wanting to make things and then wanting to share her experiences with other people in the crafting and design community. As a result, Heart Handmade was born.

How did it start? I was peddling some pouches that I'd made, and after weeks and weeks of dead-ends, I decided to turn my frustration into something positive. I figured there was room for one more blog to help independent designers get noticed, and a couple of months later Heart Handmade was up and running. I really had no idea that I'd end up becoming a full-time blogger!

BEHIND MARICHELLE'S ETSY PICKS...

It must be because I was born in the tropics, but I am such a wuss when it comes to cold weather. I'm actually surprised that I've been able to live in the Northeast for this long! The end of February is always a reassuring time for me — the birds start to sing again and the daylight seems to stick around a bit longer. I start dreaming about packing away my winter coats and my favorite ugly-but-warm Uggs in exchange for flip-flops and sandals. I love it when the seasons change — it brings about a sense of hope, re-invention and the notion that we all have a clean-slate to work from. Featured Buyer: The Breeders' Kelley Deal

You may know this week's Featured Buyer, Kelley Deal, rocks... but did you know she also knits and crochets? It's true! (Her new book, Bags that Rock, has 20 great purse patterns to prove it!)

This long time musician and fan of all things handmade took a break from touring the world with the Breeders in support of their latest album, Mountain Battles, to search Etsy using some of her favorite words as inspiration. Check out her finds below.

My mom and dad are from West Virginia. There is a rich tradition of needlework and handcrafting there. I can remember my grandmother, hands gnarled with arthritis, crocheting intricate lace using a tiny hook and what was basically thread! My mother taught me how to crochet when I was little and she and I continue to share a love of handwork. We have made quilts together and even roped my sister, Kim, into the process. Kim hand-quilts so beautifully and perfectly I had to encourage her to "make it look more hand done" or people would think it was machine quilted.

I found it impossible to just start at the Etsy home page and pick a dozen or so items. Hours would go by as I just got lost browsing and ambling from one unique piece of art to the next. I had to shake off the "Etsy art fog" and focus my search. What I did was to enter specific keywords about stuff I liked. Like...Ohio, crossword puzzles, yarn, beads and so on. That really helped me narrow down my list.

Featured Buyer: Jay McCarroll

This week’s Featured Buyer is Jay McCarroll, fashion designer and winner of the first season of Project Runway, and now, fabric designer. Read on to find out what inspired Jay to pursue a life of creating, and check out his Etsy Christmas list below!

I was born in a little town in Pennsylvania in 1974. I was the last of six children. My father made septic tanks. My mother had a delicious hall closet stocked with remnants of fabrics and tins of buttons and bags of yarn. This was my favorite place in the house. My sisters were in the high school marching band and my brother was on the football team. I made myself costumes and twirled batons in the front yard. I suppose this is where it all started.

From my very early memories of watching my father sharpen pencils with a knife and my mother crocheting afghans, I have always been fascinated by what people are able to accomplish with their hands. It's so organic and natural and beautiful and goes back to the very beginnings of time.

I made everything with my hands for the first 15 years of my career, and it is the one thing that brings me the most joy and satisfaction to this day. Sure, it's gratifying to see hundreds of something I've designed with a label with my name in it, but it's really special to see a one-of-a-kind item that my very hands have created.

TITLE OF COLLECTION: ARBITRARY TRINKETRY

I really tried to come up with a common theme for my picks... but there's like a trillion and a half amazing items on Etsy! If I went with an all green-y, organic-y theme, I would be neglecting my super-poppy plastic friends, and if i went with an all red theme, I would be neglecting my awesome pukey-yellow friends. In the end, the commonality is the personality I found in each item; either the seller or the work itself. ...Oh and color! I am very simple that way: great color is a deal-maker or breaker for me.

The line was inspired by all of the little yummy creatures who live at flea markets and estate sales in basements and in boxes with dust on their heads who need a good home. I have no intentions for an end use for my fabrics. I want people to buy them and use them with their greatest imaginations. I am so very
excited to see them pop up in a quilt, bag, creature, dress, card, circle, square or triangle, I am giddy with anticipation.

How did you hear about Etsy and why do you like it?
I first discovered Etsy through my daughter, Eve, who is a ceramic artist and has an Etsy shop — evebehar. She turned me on to it and I really like it because of all the great handmade merchandise and how easy it is to navigate.

Will you be buying any handmade gifts this holiday season?
Of course. I prefer original handmade gifts to mass produced because they are just more special.

Do you craft/make anything?
I've made a few paper mache puppets in my day, but lately all I do is talk — except I often make my own Christmas cards and I think people enjoy that.

Why should people shop on Etsy, and why do you think it is a viable alternative to big box stores?
I like personal items that are unique and thoughtful. Also, the environment needs a break from all mass production.

I have a thing for tea towels. They can instantly change the mood of a kitchen by adding pops of color and design in unexpected places. In my home, I have a collection of towels that are actually used, and others that are just for display. The bold red annabelwaterman uses in her Hot Air Balloon Tea Towel is really lovely. Looking at it makes me feel like I'm on vacation somewhere dreamy and fun.

The minute I saw Alyssa Ettinger's Porcelain Replica Milk Bottles on Design*Sponge, I was smitten. Not only did I feature them on CHOW, I bought three for myself. I like that they are hand-cast using real antique milk bottles—I use mine to display fresh cut flowers in the living room.

Trixiedelicious is yet another Etsy seller I cannot get enough of. She reclaims old plates and cups to make her wares, putting bold words on delicate pieces of china. Featured Buyer: VeganYumYum Shares Her (Delicious!) Kitchen Know-How

Lolo is the creator of VeganYumYum.com, and she's been a member of Etsy since 2005. She loves all things handmade, so Etsy is a very dangerous website for her to visit. Despite great peril on her part, she's collected some of her favorite things to share with you. On her blog she only focuses on handmade food, so she's excited to break out and feature some original, hand-crafted goods that will not only fill your life with a little bit more sunshine, but also support artists who make a living using their hands.

Sometimes I spend so much time thinking about the food I'm going to put on the table for the holidays, I forget about decoration. (You know, the non-edible stuff.) I usually end up running around my house grabbing things I can pass off for holiday flair, which always ends up being the votives I made for my wedding two and a half years ago. I dust them off as best as I can, hoping no one will notice, but since the people I have over are usually people who went to my wedding, I often hear, "Oh, I remember those candles!" With that in mind, here are some pretty handmade things we can use to, uh, update our tables.

There are other things I've included in here that I love, but don't necessarily have to do with the holidays, or your table. I hope you like them anyway! I certainly do.

Botanicraft finds natural things (leaves, flowers, branches, seeds) and makes the most gorgeous pottery out of them. These tube vases would be a perfect fall or winter or [insert favorite season] table decoration. Check out her entire inventory, there's even a pretty brown vase in there for only $6!

I'm a sucker for cutting boards: they're just so gosh darn useful. You can cut on them, use them as a hot plate, and if you find a pretty one, they look great on the table for serving as well. I feature cutting boards in about 99% of the photos on my website for these very reasons (also because I'm lazy). TheWoodenKnot has a range of gorgeous cutting boards made from the most beautifully colored woods you can imagine. No one will think you are lazy because they will be distracted by your beautiful cutting board.

If you're like me and love unique, multi-purpose, (pretty!) cooking tools, check out Khphillips' queso pot. This is the ultimate low-tech appliance for one-pot cooking. Ingredients go in, shove it in the oven, serve from it, then stick the custom lid on and put the leftovers in the fridge. (Of course I'd use it for everything but queso.) I want to eat every single one of my fall and winter meals out of this pot. Check out the rest of his pottery, too!

I'm a huge fan of salt pigs. (Yes, that's really what they're called.) I have a good idea of how much salt I'm using (when cooking or at the table) when I can feel it in between my finger tips. Using a salt shaker just doesn't do it for me. If you have a salt pig, your salt is always within reach, but protected from dust and...well, let's be honest: cat hair. Check out Risingsky's shop for different colors, and other fun items like garlic keepers and olive boats.

It's always good to have candles on hand. Worthysoycandle's shop is full of them, and she even let's you pick out your own custom fragrances, colors, as containers. And they're all vegan-friendly soy! You can't really beat that for $6.

These aren't for your table, but I just have to mention them: reusable bulk food bags. Is that a great idea or what? I bought these earlier this year and they're FANTASTIC. They're light, strong, and washable. They don't weigh any more than the normal plastic bags, and they're slightly transparent so you can see what's in them. Take a look at Kootsac's shop to get the colors and sizes that work for you. I liked them so much I went back and bought more.

I just had to feature these pretty coasters by Knight27, because the photos were taken right in my neighborhood! They're totally lovely, and since they're just trees, you can pretend they're from your neighborhood, too. (And you'll be all matchy-matchy if you get the vases above, too. Just saying.)

I'm always on the lookout for interesting dishes. (I have a little bit of an obsession.) These mini bowls are totally beautiful, modern, and fun, and also made by a local Bostonian. There's even a nice, affordable appetizer plate in JillRosenwald's store for $24. If I was going to invest in some gorgeous, handmade pottery, I'd start my search here.

I love recycled and unique things that are also useful, everyday items. Hammeronsteel's shop has some very charming church keys made from scrap metal. One of the bottle openers in his shop used to be part of an old cider press...How awesome is that? Much cooler than the one I have from Target. Sigh.

There is so much handmade vegan soap on etsy! If you search for vegan soap, you get 310 pages, and there is definitely something in there you will like. Personally, I love the idea of this kitchen soap from spottedcowsoaps that's designed to get rid of everything from garden dirt to onion and garlic smells. Fresh brewed coffee? Yes, please. You can make garlic soup and smell like a latte afterwords. WIN.

Oh man, the area in my kitchen devoted to spices is out of control. There are jars everywhere, falling over, rolling around, and the cinnamon is always hiding behind the mustard seeds, and I can't find either of them. If this sounds like your kitchen, go look at Purposedesign's store and get yourself organized. Spices included!

And finally, never forget to say thanks. I love letterpress, and Littlepretty's shop is full of original, beautiful, letterpress cards such as this one. Full disclosure: LP is a buddy of mine, but I really do love her cards. I bought the monster cards and the owl cards earlier this year. A couple months ago my husband and I got carried away playing Rockband way too loud, and way too late. Our poor new neighbors had to ask us to quiet down so they could get some sleep. The next day I gave them one of LP's owl cards with an apology, and they invited us over to a vegan dinner that same week. Her cards are so pretty, they'll make up for any social blunder! They might even get you a free vegan dinner!

Ever since my grandma taught me how to crochet when I was little, I’ve been hooked on handmade. (But what I’ve learned from my crafting endeavors is that other people do it way better, and I should just stick to writing.) Luckily, my job at BUST lets me write about crafting, choose DIY tutorials, and spend hours poring over products on blogs, web sites, and, of course, Etsy to find the very best in the world of craft. Not to mention I get to shop my heart out every year at Bust’s Holiday Craftacular and meet all the awesome people who make the goodies I love so much.

Last year we nearly blew the top off New York City’s Metropolitan Pavilion, there was so much handmade awesomeness going on (even the crafty queen of quirk, Amy Sedaris had a table). Since the Craftacular offers a representation of all kinds of handmade, I’ve tried to pick a similar sampling. Here are items from some of my all-time favorite Craftacular vendors and crafters we’ve featured in the pages of BUST.

I love these cards from BowandArrow. I buy a pack every year just to have them on hand. (And the gal working the letterpress is just as sweet as her designs.)

Featured Buyer: Holly Becker of decor8

This week's Featured Buyer is Holly Becker, the editor and founder of the inspirational design and decorating blog decor8, drawing 20,000 worldwide readers daily. She has been blogging non stop since January 2006 and we’re particularly fond of her weekly column on decor8 called Etsy Take Five Tuesdays. She also authors a popular Etsy slideshow series for Domino magazine online, authors a monthly design column in the Boston Globe, and is a contributing editor at RealSimple.com. With 160 purchases made on Etsy, Holly demonstrates her support of independent designers by promoting their work and shopping from them. Today she’ll share some of her favorite Etsy artists and show some of their work in her own home.

Oh Etsy: What you do to me! I started buying handmade on Etsy in February 2006 — my first purchase was a cosmetic bag from SeaBreezeStudio based in England. I remember when it arrived how excited and impressed I was with the quality. I also recall the responsive and friendly seller who made a great impression on me immediately. After such a positive first time transaction, I felt inspired to shop Etsy again and purchased from Simply Photo.

To date I’ve made 160 purchases and I’ve not had a single issue with any of them. I’ve shopped from sellers as far away as Singapore and items always arrive on time and exceed my expectations. Some sellers even include sweet little notes and extras, like stickers or candy. The whole personal touch thing is super addictive, as you’ll never see big box stores include personal notes expressing their gratitude for your support. It’s one of the reasons shopping handmade is so special and worthwhile. There are beating hearts behind the products, real people creating items that give them joy and they spread that happiness to others, giving us a chance to own a piece of their special worlds.

When my purchases arrive I feel positively giddy! I give so many of my purchases to friends as gifts. They always ooo and ahhh over everything; the response is so positive that I shy away from giving big box gift cards (I once gave only gift cards) and shop Etsy when I’m looking for the perfect present. It’s far more personal and you have a chance to show your friend that you really put some thought into the gift. At one time I only shopped big box for everything. Now it’s my last stop. I feel proud that I’ve changed the way I purchase and as a result I‘m contributing to the success of small business not only in America but worldwide.

I thought that you may like to see a few of my favorite art prints and original paintings that I’ve purchased from Etsy ‘at work’, living in my home. My husband and I primarily reside in New Hampshire, but we just took on a second residence in Germany, where we live five months each year. I’m in Germany as I write this, and over the past eight weeks I had to take an empty apartment and create a home from scratch. Throughout the process my big white walls kept screaming for love, and since I’m not at the point yet to decide on wall color or pattern, I went ahead and placed some of my beloved prints from artists who sell on Etsy in my living room to make the room feel more like home.

This is my art wall. Nearly everything is from Etsy, with the exception of the vintage gold swallows and the limited edition JenniferDavis print of a Mississippi riverboat. I installed these pieces to look as though they were flying upwards, away with the birds. I like to hang artwork in a fun, non traditional way.

Also, all of the prints can be removed and swapped out with others of equal size so I can rotate my collection without adding new holes to the wall. Huge perk!

I pulled this small city apartment (under 60 square meters) together on a limited budget, which is why you’ll spot some IKEA pieces. The trick when buying from stores like IKEA is to fill in the ‘blanks’ with things acquired from indie sellers and flea markets. This brings in your personality and a sense of history. I still have lots to do in this space and a coffee table to buy, but placing Etsy art around has helped to make me feel at home.

The best part about having a picture ledge above the sofa (don’t worry, no one can hit the ledge if seated) is that it is my rotating art gallery. I can put whatever up on the ledge that inspires me at the moment, so it‘s fun to play around with and I do not have to mess up the walls.

This is my small, very naked dining room. I still plan to install a pendant light over the table, paint and upholster the chairs, and etc. but this is what it looks like today. In my cabinet is where I keep lots of handmade and flea market finds along with books and fabric. Lots of these things came from Etsy and were given to me by friends.

One of my favorite treasures inside of this cabinet is the original painting from Brooklyn artist CaitlinKeegan (top right).

This is my home in New Hampshire and a peek into my living room, where I also have an art wall. Not all of this work is from Etsy, and some are original paintings, but I’ll highlight those that are: MyFolkLover, mcaplan, JenniferDavis, ashleyg, MicheleMaule, even the little soft mushroom is an Etsy find from littlebirds, along with the vintage dish via bluebellbazaar, and the ceramic deer is vintage from pinkshowercurtain.

This is what you’ll find around my bedroom in New Hampshire. The photograph is from AliciaBock, and the plant and pot are also from Etsy (yup!) via GreenwareDesign.

Leanne Marshall, aka Leanimal on Etsy, is living the dream: she's currently a contestant on the highly rated television show—and fashion phenomenon—Project Runway. Each week, lovers of fashion and craftsmanship watch in wonder as a new challenge surfaces, and the sheer ingenuity of the show's designers is put to the test. We recently got in touch with Leanne to find out her favorite pieces on Etsy, as well as to hear about her experience on Project Runway.

I'm Leanne and I run a small independent clothing line of my own formerly known as Leanimal, but now I'm just going by my name Leanne Marshall. No more animal! ;)

I knew that I wanted to be a fashion designer since I was 12 years old and I dabbled in designing my ballet costumes. I ended up going to FIDM in San Francisco and getting a degree in fashion design, but after graduating I took a detour and worked as a graphic designer for five years. I was able to quit my day job as a graphic designer and do the clothing line full-time thanks to success on Etsy.

I currently live and work in Portland, Oregon and do my clothing line full-time—or more than full-time. It's like my child, and it's not 9-5; it's my life! I do it all myself at the moment, but I'm hoping to expand and have hired help soon. At the end of the day, it's wonderful just to be able to do what I love and make a living at it.

As for Project Runway, this was my second time auditioning. I auditioned for season 4 as a last minute decision and I made it past the first cut, but ultimately I didn't make it and I don't think I was ready for it then. The second time was the charm, and I was without a doubt a much stronger designer. I had been making clothes constantly in the last year. I think I made well over 200 garments that I then sold to boutiques or in my Etsy shop. Some days I would make up to three dresses in one day! So, I definitely felt much more prepared and confident in my technical as well as design skills.

Once I found out I had made it I was beyond thrilled! And of course it was so much harder than I could ever be prepared for! I'm used to working alone in my studio apartment all day long. It's just me, my sewing machine and a closet that is overflowing outward with fabric! This environment was the complete opposite with the cameras, the crazy personalities and all the drama! But it was the experience of a lifetime, without a doubt, and I made some great friends while I was there, too.

Featured Buyer: Carrie Blaydes of Borderline Mag

This week’s Featured Buyer is Carrie Blaydes, a women’s clothing designer living in Brooklyn, New York. For the past year and a half, she has also been one side of the editorial duo behind the online street fashion magazine Borderline Mag, which she founded with her old friend Nick Whitehouse. Thanks to a longtime love of sewing, vintage clothing, and a closely related addiction to garment reconstruction, she recently co-authored Fashion DIY: 30 Ways to Craft Your Own Style from Sixth & Spring Books.

For me, fall has always been the ultimate bonanza of style inspiration. In a world where I already tune intently to the weather vane of my fashion sense regardless of the season, I readily admit that fall provides me the ultimate frisson of sartorial expectation. I spend countless hours with Nick selecting the best street fashion photos from around the world to post on Borderline Mag, and get extra excited about the crafty, vintage-loving style visionaries who submit editorial spreads swathed in fall's coziest layers. In my own little studio at home, I can't stop sketching, collecting, customizing and creating.

This fall I want to take a moody approach to dressing, with lots of beatnik references and nonchalant-but-oh-so-chic neutrals. I'm looking to Etsy for handmade and vintage pieces that I can't live without as I construct the perfect look for the season. Everything I want is here, from buttery soft leather and edgy accessories, to artful basics and the perfect sketchbook. Best of all, each piece feels like a true find thanks to the loving hands that thrifted or created it. I even found the inspiration image that gave me the essential color story and definitive vibe to pull it all together. I was so excited that I couldn't resist making a board that captured the bongo-drumming harmony of it all. And the beat goes on....

I find this Polaroid image by FuturoWoman, aptly called "Frozen Sunset," to be incredibly evocative of the shortening days and early evening chill of fall. The quietly inspiring color palette reminds me of an Egon Schiele painting.

Like a work of art unto itself, this cheekily mod white dress by neringaci could have graced an early Avedon photo. I'd stick with the black-and-white theme and pair it with matte black tights and soft black oxfords.

Though I love many of stacyleigh's beautifully handcrafted leather bags, this is my absolute favorite. The design is a perfect balance of structure and softness, deliciously rendered in my favorite dove grey color.

A flattering high waisted silhouette and cute inverted pleat keep the line of this OrangeNYC skirt nice and slender. As cute with a plain white tee as with a posh silk secretary blouse, this is the kind of fresh new basic I want to fill my closet with.

I always carry a blank book for notes, sketches and collected bits of visual inspiration. This recycled blank notebook by PigseyArt is larger than average and stylishly tongue-in-cheek thanks to a former life as a 'Psychological Testing' textbook.

The fashion forward shape of this charming french terry turban would be a step up from my usual beanie. I also love the cabled fingerless gloves and cashmere cowl in the aCommonThread store. They form a cozy little style triumvirate I'd love to nestle into.

The perfect shoes to wear with everything I want this fall, I'm simply in awe of these handmade black beauties by zerkahloostrah. They're custom fit to your feet, making them the height of old-word craftsmanship and below-the-radar luxury.

I love this LaMixx handmade white tee so much that I want two or three of them to wear between laundry days. The ideal boyfriend fit in a slightly more feminine cut, it begs to be layered under all my favorite cardigans this fall.

Designer shades fit and look so much better than cheapos, but cost way too much for something I'm probably going to leave on the subway. This oversized vintage pair from CherryPickVintage is the real deal (mmmm Dior!) without the crazy price tag.

I'm always drawn to layers of chain like this piece by wheatJENINE because they oxidize nicely the more you wear them. I especially like the way the two white bone feathers hang: balancing two focal points rather than centering a single one feels fresh and a little edgy.

Finding a hoodie with this much style (like this one by wearflock) is like discovering the perfect pair of dark denim jeans: a second skin that makes you feel cool and pulled together but completely comfortable at the same time. Basic+Chic=Genius.

This vintage mod masterpiece from retrogarb cuts an equally striking and gorgeous silhouette from any direction. I would pair it with long wooly gloves on extra chilly nights and keep the volume balanced with skinny pants or a pencil skirt down below.

Featured Buyer: Ez of Creature Comforts

This week's Featured Buyer is Ez of style blog Creature Comforts. She's a great supporter of the handmade lifestyle, as well as an Etsy seller herself. Ez has an eye for well composed photos, design sense up to her ears and puts together a heck of an inspiration board. Without further ado, here's Ez!

Hi everyone! I'm Ez (Ee-Zee). I'm an adjective lover, have been known to pronounce Etsy as Eat-See, and am super excited to have the chance to share some of my favorite finds with you today.

I'm a huge fan of indie and handcrafted goods, and am an Etsy shop owner myself. (Check me out at wrenandchickadee!) To me, there is something so unique and irreplaceable about handmade products. So much of a designer's heart goes into creating her unique work, and it's truly wonderful to hold something in your hands or display something in your home that has such a direct connection to its creator. This is part of the reason why I make a point of featuring independent artists on my blog Creature Comforts as often as I can... that and indie is where it's at!

I don't have plans to get married anytime soon, but if that day should ever come I will be permanently affixing one of kateszabone's stunning creations onto my finger. I love her work!

A while back I purchased one of these wonderful little mini tag books from erinzam, so I can tell you from experience that they are even lovelier in person and so well made. I use mine for sketches of the things I'm thankful for and it's perfect.

Half of the reason I rarely write "thank you" cards is because there never seems to be a card perfect enough to send. Well, palomasnest has solved my problem with her fabulous thank you wood stationery cards. I better get writing.

I've been obsessed with cowls lately but sometimes they can look a little bit dated. The keo chubby by Joodito has not even one ounce of old lady fashion in it and is absolutely fab to the max!

I love the trend we've been seeing of unique motivational prints. The we are in this together print by lorenasiminovich is one of my favorites. So simple and wonderful.

Another artist I'm extremely fond of is Caitlin Shearer of pepperminte. Her little knickers piece is displayed in my home along with several other works of hers. I just can't get enough of this girl's talent!

It's hard to pick a calendar these days because there are just so many good ones to choose from. This birdie II calendar by smeurer8 made it on to my must have list because I can't resist the bird motif, and its petite size and lovely wood backing make it truly unique!

The tiny golden honeyed dots necklace by eRosasjewelry is another Etsy purchase that I have been absolutely thrilled with. I find myself picking out outfits around this little beauty, so that I can wear it as often as possible.

I love the French cottage feel of this beautiful doily pillow by SparklePower. It's delicate in appearance, but not overly done, so this would look fabulous on a bed or couch!

Every woman needs a good black bag, and the belle tote by christystudio should be it. The price is phenomenal and the style is perfection! I love it!

Yes, I'm a sucker when it comes to little forest creatures. I'd love to pin this little yellow fawn pin by theilluminatedowl to my bag or fall coat for a touch of color and sweetness to brighten any dreary day.

All you have to do is read the scrumptious list of scents that you can choose from with these soy candles by blisscandles and you'll be hooked just like I am. Vanilla hazelnut mocha anyone?!

Featured Buyer: Davey Sommers of COLOURlovers

This week's Featured Buyer is Davey Sommers, editor of the art and design blog for color trendspotting site COLOURlovers.com. In addition to analyzing color palattes, Davey is a member of the The Post Family — a group of Chicago gallery and event curators, an artist collective and a print shop all rolled into one. He also sometimes makes stuff out of recycled things. Here's Davey.

I love Etsy because it is an unbordered community that brings artists and art lovers together. It's a great example of a market economy, too: one without lobbyists and tax cuts for nonlocal businesses.

Using the Colors tool on Etsy, these picks are inspired by the top colors currently on COLOURlovers.

Blue, or 'balls' blue in this case, is a reoccurring hue in the work of Mike Best, aka BestArtStudios2. It's a nice match for the thoughtful, and at times vulnerable, facial expressions of this character seen throughout his work.

In TheaCphotography's Bounty, she melds shades of green, allowing the deep color of the berries to pull the viewer's eye. As many of her photos contain a single prominent color, and since they are all sized 8x8, you could easily create a cohesive color palette made up of her work.

In this print by LizzyClara, what looks to be a hand holding out flowers, presumably to another person whom they have some sort of relationship with, is, in fact, a hand holding down flowers on the floor, as told by the color.

Not exactly the same as "The Order of the Wen," but this shares the same warm color composition as this wonderful illustration by ashleyg.

I nearly mentioned mannmadedesigns twice with Jimmy's great selection of colors available for all of his wonderful products, like this "incorrigible tease" square bubble pendant.

These handmade stickers from SupergirlStickers use beautifully crafted "Dutch teal" origami paper. They would add a nice touch of color on any letter (if anyone sends those still), or, if you're a teacher, use them to distract a student from that poor grade on his last history paper.

This Italian lambskin by KarleighJae would work wonderfully for any "science class slut's" new lab coat.

Some time ago, dinosaurs lived on earth along with "certain frogs." And as you can see from this watercolor by tiddlyinks, they shared similar
colors.

The color palette of this handbound journal by strawhousebooks is relaxing and welcoming, definitely offering some "soul therapy."

Whenever a painting becomes mixed media, it becomes happy, like this "heart of gold" piece by kellycstudio.

I
hardly think that a baby could truly appreciate the colors in this "vanilla cream" pattern by sweetiepiedesign. I'm thinking, beer cozy.

Flying through the "insomnia martyr" night sky is flying ninja girl by beeczarcardsandgifts, whose shop is filled with other colorful items.

More on Davey:

Besides the things listed in the intro, Davey doesn't do too much else. "How much should one man do?" Davey sometimes asks, then answers himself: "This is how much, the much I am doing now; no more, no less, this is enough."

So Davey goes on about his life enjoying the finer things of a humble existence in the second city: watching the specks of dust on their voyages through the currents of air, listening to the sounds of landscapes, and laughing to a point where it seems his heart may burst when he hears the politicians talk about nothing for hours on end.

Featured Buyer: Jessica Marshall Forbes of Ravelry.com

This week's Featured Buyer is Jessica Marshall Forbes, a knitter who's been blogging since 2004. You may also know her as the founder of Ravelry.com, the knitting and crochet community website founded by Jessica and her husband Casey last year. Ravelry has taken the fiber world by storm and grown to over 180,000 users and 2.8 million page views per day. Today Jessica is going to share some of her favorite knit and crochet items on Etsy!

I am really excited to talk about my favorite Etsy shops on The Storque! I am a big fan of buying handmade, being a knitter and crocheter myself. Also, Etsy shop owners are wonderful Ravelry participants: many advertise on the site, feeding Ravelers' bottomless appetite for handmade knit and crochet related items. Independent knit and crochet designers, local yarn stores and other small craft businesses are a huge part of what makes Ravelry so fun and rewarding for us.

There are so many amazing shops on Etsy for knit and crochet, so it was so difficult to choose things to include. I have met so many great crafters through Ravelry and here are some of my favorites!

I am totally addicted to splityarn's pouches. I use them to hold my scissors and stitch markers when I am on the road, and use the longer pouches to hold my crochet hooks. Beware: once you start with her pouches, you can't stop!

My dad always told me you should send thank you cards and I like to find pretty, handmade ones on Etsy! My two favorite shops for yarn-themed cards are Maryse's and Fricknotes. They both feature colorful cards with really amazing photography!

Just like other knitters and crocheters, I am always on the look out for a new bag to carry around my projects. I have a large purse that I use every day and, without a project bag to protect my work, it can be very easy for something to unravel as I go through my day. (Nightmare!) This lace keeper by julipbags will keep everything safe from harm!

I am loving the knitting clutches by persnickityknits! No reason that our knitting bags can't be stylish as well as functional. This red one caught my eye but she also has them in more neutral colors.

For tinier projects and knitting in line at the post office, I love the wristlet bags from SewBendy. This one with the little bird is awesome!

I also dabble in hand spinning. Butterflygirldesigns' spindles are definitely on my wishlist! They are so gorgeous and functional! She also has lovely batts and rovings.

For yarns and rovings for spinning, the sky is definitely the limit on Etsy! You could spend a year's salary easily. I picked out a few that I have my eye on.

I am a sucker for blue, green and brown and this Bluefaced Leicester by Squoosh is definitely pushing all my buttons! She also has lovely handspun and hand dyed yarns.

Denise at BlueHandsFibers does really amazing things with color. I am leaning toward fall tones right now; I love her bulky Harvest merino.

More on the fall-ish theme: I like this neutral, but not too boring, sock yarn from CapistranoFiberArts.

CapistranoFiberArts also dyes up some mean green and blue, which is what got me hooked on her in the first place! Mmmm yummy!

I was lucky enough to score some handspun yarn from Juliespins' shop this week. It is really incredible. (If you can get your hands on some!) She doesn't have any in her shop currently, as they sell so quickly, but she does do custom handspun and has some really lovely rovings. She is lovely to work with!

I recently discovered Guttersnipe's shop. She has yarns that are just really fun, especially with the cowl craze going on right now. I love the colors in Earthsea, which is a bulky superwash merino.

Also, just for fun, I like these resin keychains from Debbie at McYarnpants. She also has a ton of other goods made from vintage knitting and crochet magazines, including cards.

There are lots of shops on Etsy that have stitch markers. I like Pookeh's shop because she always has some fun ones!

When she's not knitting, Jessica crochets, spins, takes pictures, rides her Vespa, gardens, and buys necklaces from Etsy sellers like there's no tomorrow. She lives in Boston with her husband and 2-year old Boston Terrier, Bob, who loves to get his picture taken. When he's not posing for photos, Bob works as mascot for Ravelry.com.

Featured Buyers: EtsyPatrons, Etsy's Team of Buyers

As Etsy's quintessential shoppers, EtsyPatrons Team members are a natural choice for this week's Featured Buyers. They are constantly roaming the virtual shops of Etsy, and this week they share their wonderful finds, selected from some of Etsy's newest artists.

Hi, I'm Beverly of beachyrustica, Team Leader of EtsyPatrons. Our team began, as many do, with a Forum thread and an idea. One of our soon-to-be members started a discussion encouraging the Etsy community to "Make Someone's Day" by purchasing from a new Etsian and telling everyone what they'd found. Many "days were made," and several of us took up the cause and formed a team: except instead of aligning for the purpose of selling, we united as a team of buyers. During our work as EtsyPatrons, those of us who are also Etsy shop owners take off our seller hats and join with our buyer-only teammates to purchase from and promote the shops of others. I think it is safe to say that we are the only non-self promotional team on Etsy.

Our current projects include the continuation of Have You Made Someone's Day, our weekly effort to promote new shops within the Etsy Forums; members also select their favorite new items and give them greater exposure by curating and promoting an Etsy Treasury; starting and hosting a Buyer's thread within the Forums; blogging at EtsyPatrons.blogspot.com, as well as writing about our favorite shops for the blogs of others; maintaining an EtsyPatrons EtsyMini of our favorites that shows up across the web, and many other projects. Members are encouraged to initiate their own projects to make buying on Etsy a team effort!

The pieces below were submitted by individual members and then voted on by the team. We wanted to highlight some of Etsy's newest artists, while showing off the excellent quality and creativity of handmade work that buyers come to Etsy to find, as well as some of the great vintage pieces available on the site.

Maru of Wiremeup found this gorgeous art quilt, created by ModernQuilts. "Both the commanding colors used and the detailed hand stitchery of the words, 'whole, wholly, holy' and 'whole cloth, of the cloth and man of the cloth,' swirling about this exceptional art quilt made of a single piece of fabric, is wholly beyond the words stitched onto the quilt itself."

Zebras in the Room by audreyart was selected by EP's Treasury Director, Glenna of VintageEmbellishment. She says, "I love this print. The little redheaded girl reminds me of my granddaughter, who at 5 years old is learning all about the 'love of reading' and the joy it brings."

This Cosmos Rectangular Zip Pouch by misscakedesign was the selection of Maisy, aka maisyh. "Not only does it combine two of my favorite colors — lavender and lime — but this is a pouch that will not get lost at the bottom of your tote! I particularly love the way misscake has machine appliquéd her own design into the material to give the combination yet more individuality. This pouch has wide appeal: practical, stylish, feminine, and edgy."

"The fullness and beauty of each woman in this powerfully brilliant painting is in the fact that they are faceless. Though they are faceless, they express a vibrant image, each with their own personality," commented Maru of Wiremeup, who discovered this work by Krystyna81 entitled It's Not About You.

These charming, handpainted wooden chairs by pamdesign were chosen by Jen of Jemjoop. "I really love these handpainted chairs! There is something to be said for functional art you can actually use around your home. They put a beautiful spin on recycling!"

Even the title of this piece is appealing. The Peek-A-Boo Fairy Art Card ACEO was created by ArtSlings1946 and discovered by Linda of Peppercorns2. She says, "I love the beautiful artistry and imagination of this mini art treasure."

Nest was the choice of Jen, aka Jemjoop. "Larkjewelrydesigns handcrafted this wonderful silver nest necklace in tourmaline, ruby, and garnet. I like it for its originality and skillful design. A really unique piece for your jewelry box."

"I love anything orange and pink, which is probably why this fabulous tangerine orange and lavender fabric bowl by sewdivine caught my eye! For me, the appeal is in the luxurious clashing colors, the genius construction, and the fact that everyone needs a good bowl to throw their keys and cell phone into when they get home," says maisyh.

Our star shopper discovered Butterflies, an 8x10 photograph by katieelizabethphoto. Maru of Wiremeup summed up her selection of this piece as such: "What caught my imagination were the butterflies fluttering about from this young woman's stomach, as if she was embarking on a passage of womanhood or perhaps the anticipation of a honeymoon. So excited of what is to come: butterflies of oh so perfect days full of excitement."

I ran across this fun archival print, Retro Shopper with Companion by sandyklotter, and chose it as the lead in to this article because it evokes the exact feeling that makes us Etsypatrons: sharing the fun of shopping on Etsy!

Featured Buyer: Kate Miss of For Me, For You

This week's Featured Buyer is Kate Miss, a graphic designer living and working in Manhattan. She writes a daily blog — For Me, For You — sharing everything that she loves, as she comes across it. Etsy Finds play a huge role on her blog, as well as fashion, art and photography. We're quite addicted to it here at The Storque! Here's Kate.

For Me, For You started as a way to keep in touch (and inspired) with my best friend Andrea when I moved from my hometown of Seattle to New York. It took a while to get going and didn't become a daily place for me to blog until barely a year ago. I've now met (on the internet and in person!) some incredibly amazing, talented people that I would have never met if it weren't for the blog. Andrea has stepped back a lot on the blog while she starts a family and a new job, and I steer the wheel these days. But she always remains half of the heart behind For Me, For You.

I try my best to seek things out to share that aren't already all over the blogosphere. It's not always possible, as the blogging community is tight knit and many of us have similar aesthetics and interests (and some days you're just not in the mood for a hunt!), but I try to keep the philosophy of posting things that the majority of my readers haven't seen yet and that they will love just as much as I do. One of my favorite things on earth is to sit down and dig through Etsy for something fantastic to share, which there is an endless supply of. I hardly think my blog could be half as fun without Etsy.

So here are some of my favorites that have been featured on For Me, For You:

My TheLeatherStore bag is simple, sturdy and goes everywhere I go. They're high quality and I love that they're handmade.

Neawear is a recent find for me, and this necklace has already become a staple accessory.

Two fantastic things about Mid West Vintage from stephaniebracciano: really unique finds (I probably love her belts the best) and her packages come with serious character (candy, cute postcards, and a personal note about what you bought).

I am such a sucker for hand drawn lettering. ArgyleWhale never disappoints in that department, and anyone who can make the words "nom nom nom" work in a piece is a genius in my book.

NuitBlanche makes wonderful, incredibly inspiring art. Looking at this zine is similar to eating a pint of Ben & Jerry's for me. Yes, it's that good.

An Etsy shop I probably don't even need to mention because everyone I know loves them, but how could I not? SomethingsHidingHere is truly one of a kind, and I especially love their wood rings.

LaurenKRoberts makes totally unique jewelry: Need I say more? Look at this necklace, it's fantastic.

It's the year of the sunglasses wardrobe. I could own pretty much every pair from vintage shop Chigal.

Whenever my outfit looks too boring, I throw on my fabricfarrago necklace and I'm good to go.

In the words of Andrea, "There's no excuse not to own original art these days." So true! Get one of brandistrickland's original pieces for a seriously awesome price.

Picking one thing from Essimar's shop to share with you was a painstaking process, as everything is amazing. These handmade/cut animals blow my mind.

A girl can never go wrong in a vintage pencil skirt, or really anything ladiesofleisure have for sale.

Montmarte makes beautiful handmade scarves that will be especially great for the fall.

I love nostalgic accessories, so I'm pretty crazy about best friends necklaces right now, like this one from moonacre.

I first came across loyaltyandblood at the Brooklyn Flea, and was super excited to find they have an Etsy shop. I'm not from Texas, but I have one of their bear charms I wear all the time, and I think everyone should have a charm of the state they love.

Featured Buyer: Alyson Graves of Unruly Things

This week's Featured Buyer is esteemed style spotter Alyson Graves of highly addictive blog Unruly Things. She's on the hunt for vintage housewares, and we're along for the ride! Enjoy!

Hi there! I'm Alyson and I write a style blog titled Unruly Things, while also keeping myself busy with my new business and Etsy shop, Seventy and Sunny, where I design and illustrate pretty things like blog headers and calling cards. When I'm not busy designing a logo or blogging about my recent fashion finds, I'm most likely bookmarking or favoriting fantastic finds from Etsy.

I must admit, I'm a big dreamer and list maker. I started Unruly Things as a vault to store all of the things I'd find and wish for. I still remember the first time I discovered Etsy: It was like I'd fallen upon this giant secret shopping world with incredible jewelry, handmade tote bags and wallets, unique pillows and even rugs, page after page of gocco and silkscreened prints, and my favorite part of the site, oodles and oodles of vintage housewares.

I like to dream about owning a big house with light and bright windows, elegant hardwood floors and ample space to store plenty of vintage findings. When I'm searching on Etsy, more often than not it's for something to spruce up my home. I've been known to haunt the vintage housewares section on a daily basis before, in attempts to snag some great finds. So here are some of my recent favorites I'm sure you will enjoy!

One of my favorite things are letters. I think letters make pretty shapes. I've been hunting for a little A to put on my bookshelves, so when I found these vintage metal letters from JunkEnvy, I couldn't resist.

I love this little zig zag rug SO dearly. Annikki is a wonderful lady behind finnishweaver who creates these fantastic works of art. I'd love to have one of her rugs in my kitchen.

LadiesandGentlemen is one of my favorite vintage shops on Etsy. It's always stocked with great finds. I especially love these adorable apple dishes.

I love to cook and spend a lot of time in the kitchen, so I like to surround myself with bright colors as much as I can. Pops of color on the table or in the kitchen always make me smile. These vintage Vera linen napkins from Banglespark are bright and sunny.

I am completely in love with the work of Julianna Swaney of OhMyCavalier. I'm especially in love with the way she illustrates animals and puts them into dresses. I really love these beehive bears and those tiny bees.

Another one of my favorite vintage shops is WhiteElephantVintage. They constantly stock great home decor. I love this metal basket. I'd love to put it on the table as a center piece, and fill it with colorful flowers in vintage Ball jars.

I love this cushion cover from SkinnyLaminx. I love the repeated deer silhouettes, and I love the combination of blue and red.

We all know that AshleyG rocks, but if you follow me on Unruly Things, you obviously know she was channeling my boyfriend and I when she drew this couple. A Look Only You Would Understand — I simply had to have it. :)

I love these mugs from BlueBellBazaar. They have a really retro feel to them without being over the top. Plus, I love all that color.

I was handed down a collection of vintage butterfly gold Pyrex from my mom. I love the golden color and I'm always happy to find more pieces to add to my collection. I love this tiny mixing bowl and would love to use it for a candy dish.

Ok, ok: what's a home without pretty clothes and accessories laying around?

I'm totally feeling corduroy this fall: pants, dresses, and skirts in pretty jewel tones. This high waisted skirt from ramonawest would be perfect with tights and brown oxfords.

I love these adorable poppy bobbypins from Foundling made from recycled vintage fabrics. They're soo delicate, yet perfectly sized for pinning back pesky bangs.

Featured Buyer: Julie Chesler of Vain and Vapid

This week's esteemed Featured Buyer is blogger, style maven and designer Julie Chesler of Vain and Vapid. Julie is always on target with her style insights and manages to make both high and low fashion easily accessible to any casual fashionista. Without further ado, here's Julie!

I started Vain and Vapid after exiling myself to a foreign country where assimilating with the locals was not going as well as I had hoped. I design clothes, I sew clothes and I send them back to my homeland. When I am not doing any of those things, I read about clothes and shoes, I look at pictures of clothes and shoes, I buy clothes and shoes and the only time I take a break from the clothes and the shoes is to hit up a happy hour every now and again. Come on, the label is called Vain and Vapid, not insightful and well-balanced.

I love Etsy: first of all, because we are both from Brooklyn, and second because of all the lovely things made by the lovely hands of some very lovely people. To me, the things I buy on Etsy are just as luxurious as any Balenciaga bag, or maybe even more so: While a Balenciaga bag may be made by some very overworked migrant worker in some remote factory, something you buy on Etsy is made by a possibly overworked, likely college-educated person who puts their whole heart and soul into each and every piece they make. Plus, it's always a great feeling to support and encourage young designers, and who doesn't want to feel great?

I am not a lover of fall and am always sad to see the summer go, but clothing and jewelry and lovely things can reconcile me to anything. I chose some of the following pieces because they are cute, fashion-forward and perfect for fall. Others are just lovely and inspiring to me, but they can all go together and be a piece of your chic puzzle. The other thing that can reconcile me to anything? ...Cake.

The best dressed girl on Etsy is hands down Fifi Lapin, working that Proenza Schouler constable hat. I am beyond jealous of her wardrobe, particularly because she owns virtually every piece of the Luella spring '08 collection.

Cake Topper Capele by katetowers

I love capelets, and this one has such a beautiful mix of vintage fabrics and lace. This mixed with a vintage rock tee would be my perfect going out outfit. I'm not sure how cake is involved, but it can't hurt.

Cowl Neck w/ Inverted Pleat by orangenyc

I love drama in the back. Add some tights and a cardigan to this and I could wear it all fall and winter long.

LEILA African wax high waisted skater skirt w/ Swarovski crystal buttons by Cocottecouture

One of my favorite designers on Etsy is Cocotte Couture. I love the shape and cut of this skirt, and the African print is one of my favorite details.

Sterling Bike Necklace by cravejewelrydesign

I am a huge fan of aptly named Crave Jewelry, and it was almost impossible for me to narrow down to one specific item. I finally chose this bicycle necklace in memory of my stolen blue bicycle. :(

The Frances Tote by madebyhank

This bag has so many beautiful details, I have lost count. I love the use of recycled materials and the embroidery on the handle is absolutely lovely. Great job, Hank.

Leather and Feather Headband by mothlove

The feather headbands by Moth Love are so pretty, and are a really good alternative to the fascinator—if you're not a fascinator sort of girl. The jersey dresses in her shop are also super pretty, with lots of drama in the back. The whole shop has a lovely 1920s feel to it which is just beautiful...

I love this print by Bucks County Frames because I love maps of every kind. My husband thinks I am really strange because I am one of those weird people that actually looks through all the maps in the back of the in-flight magazine every single time we fly, but that is really the pot calling the kettle black.

I just ordered some custom made hang tags for my shop from Alyson and I can't wait to receive them. She did a great job with the artwork and layout. They are so cute and suit my summer and fall collection perfectly.

This top is simple but one of those things you would want to wear all the time in a thousand different ways. It is inspired by a school uniform, and I am all about school uniforms.
