Etsy How-Tuesday presents Kari aka ikyoto and Stella aka lookcloselypress of The {NewNew} York Team. Today we're going to learn how to screenprint our own snowflake gift wrap for the holidays. Kari and Stella remind us that recycling paper bags is a great source for materials for this kind of project.

A flat protected surface (table with construction paper works just fine)

Steps for Making Screenprinted Gift Wrap:

Cut up your bags until they lay flat.
Iron the bags with the iron on a cotton setting with some steam.
Lay one bag on a flat protected surface (you can tape the edges down if you like).
- Place the screen over the bag.
- Have a friend hold the screen firmly in place.
- Use an ink spreader, spatula, or stirring stick to put some ink evenly along one edge of the screen.
- Using a squeegee firmly press down and pull the ink across the design holding the squeegee at a 45º angle.
- Carefully lift the screen, while holding the paper down to separate the two.
- Repeat swiftly until you notice the ink starting to gum in the screen at which point: rinse!

Furoshiki for the Holidays

This holiday season, once the gifts under the tree have been ravaged and unearthed, avoid dragging that garbage bag of crumpled wrapping paper and wilted bows down the driveway. Designer and illustrator Jenn Playford offers an environmentally-friendly and irresistibly pretty alternative.

Jenn's interests in colors, graphics, and textile, led her to the traditional Japanese wrapping cloth of furoshiki, and eventually, her own line of reusable fabric gift wrap, called Furochic™. Here on The Storque, Jenn shares some techniques and inspiration from her book, Wrapagami, the Art of Fabric Gift Wrap, along with a fascinating history of this resurrected craft.

I love fabric. Walking into a store where the shelves are filled with beautiful fabrics makes my heart race with anticipation, and the gorgeous colors, textures, and patterns are always invigorating and inspiring. I have always enjoyed making things using my vast collection of fabric, ribbon, yarn, trinkets, gems, and odds and ends — and, especially, using these embellishments to decorate gifts. For years, pages from fashion magazines were my gift wrap of choice, as I felt that wrapping paper was wasteful. Eventually, my love for textiles and concerns about the environment prompted me to try wrapping gifts with fabric remnants from my collection.

An interest in Japanese art and design, especially textiles, led me to furoshiki, a cloth wrap used in Japan since the seventeenth century to wrap and carry items.

History of Furoshiki

Nara Period (Eighth Century): Starting in the eight century, a square piece of fabric called hokei-fuhaku was used to wrap special items of value, including clothing for Buddhist priests and elaborate minstrel costumes. The wrapping was called tsutsumi, and its main purpose was to protect and carry garments.

Edo Period (1603-1868): As bathhouses increased in popularity, the square wrap became known as furoshiki: furo meaning "bath" and shiki meaning "to spread." Furoshiki were used to carry toiletries and clothing to the bathhouses and were also placed on the floor to act as bathmats. During this period, wealthy families commissioned bridal furoshiki of different sizes, decroated with their family crests and symbols of good luck.

1800s: When cotton was introduced from overseas, furoshiki began to be produced on a larger scale. At the same time, people of Japan were traveling more for pleasure, often selling goods along the way. Furoshiki were used for not only transporting the travelers' belongings but also their goods for sale.

1900s: At the turn of the twentieth century, the advances in textile production — mainly automated looms from overseas — made furoshiki even more accessible to the public. Furoshiki became mass-produced, and the tradition of using cloth to wrap gifts was established. Gifts wrapped with furoshiki would often be presented in person; the person giving the gift would unwrap and reveal the gift, and then keep the cloth to take home. The bridal furoshiki also became commonplace, and the bride used the large cloths for wrapping her belongings and the small cloths for wrapping gifts.

Post-World War II: After World War II, the Japanese became more highly influenced by American culture, resulting in the decline of furoshiki. The invention of the paper bag, followed by the plastic bag and the emergence of supermarkets across Japan in the 1970s, contirbuted to the disappearance of furoshiki. Plastic boxes and bags replaced furoshiki as a means of storage and for carrying goods. By the 1980s, the custom of using furoshiki to wrap gifts had declined almost to obscurity.

1990s - Present: When Japan's economic boom ended in the early 1990s, people began to reflect upon the disadvantages and waste in a disposable society. In 2006, Japan's then Minister of the Environment, Ms. Yuriko Koike, launched a campaign to encourage the use of furoshiki, instead of paper and plastic, and bring back the cultural tradition of wrapping and carryin gitems in fabric. She designed a furoshiki called the "Mottainai Furoshiki," mottainai, translating to "waste not, want not." The result has been a renewed and widespread interest in the tradition of tsutsumi and a flowering of creativity associated with it. Furoshiki are beginning to be seen outside of Japan as people worldwide embrace greener lifestyles and adapt different cultural solutions to their own ways of living.

The 4-Tie Box Wrap is simple yet elegant. This wrap can hold almost any square box securely, and it works equally well for small or large and light or heavy packages. You can even carry the box from the top, holding it under the knots as a handle. The knots on top of the box give the illusion of a fancy bow.

What You Need
1 square wrap. The size should be large enough to have 5" (12.5cm) left after tying the knots. A 28" x 28" (71 x 71cm) wrap works well for a 6" x 6" x 4" (15 x 15 x 10cm) box.

Fabric Notes
Almost any fabric will work, but if your box is heavy, it is best to avoid stretch fabric. Stay away from fabrics that are too thick, or the double knots will be bulky.

Tips + Variations
This wrap works well with a scarf that has a 5" (12.5cm) border. The wrap to the right has a solid color border, which looks like a separate element sitting on top of the box — a big, complementary bow.

Tuck a note, card, or photo beneath the first (lower) bow for a surprise when the recipient opens the gift.

How to Do It
1. Lay wrap flat on a diagonal and place box in the center.

2. Pull up "b" and "d" and center above the box while arranging gathers evenly. Tie a square knot.

3. Adjust corners of first knot. Turn box and pull "a" and "c" up, arranging gathers evenly. Tie a square knot above the first knot.

4. Adjust bow corners so that there is one flap in each of the four directions.

The Over-the-Shoulder Wrap is simple yet functional. Three knots (two hidden) hold it in place and leave room for the bag to slide over a shoulder. Inside, there is ample room for items of varying sizes. It's a great way to wrap a gift for the crafty person on your list — fill it with yarns and other knitting and crochet supplies. This wrap can be easily reused because it holds its shape even after the gift is "unwrapped."

What You Need
1 square wrap. The wrap has to be at least 36" x 36" (91.5 x 91.5cm) to sit over the shoulder; otherwise, it will be more of a handbag.

Fabric Notes
A strong, durable fabric such as a thick cotton or denim is best. If the fabric is too flimsy, it won't hold its shape and may tear when carrying heavier items. Try a thick embroidered Chinese silk for a more formal look.

How to Do It

1. Lay wrap flat on a diagonal and fold "c" up toward "a" to form a triangle.

2. Gather corner "d" and measure approximately 1/2 the length of the side of the triangle. Tie into a single knot. Repeat the same for "b."

3. Flip the wrap inside out so that the two knots are sitting inside of the bag. Hold "a and "c" up.

4. Tie "a" and "c" into a square knot. Adjust fabric and gathers and place your gift inside the bag.

Wednesday Workshop Wrap-Up: Gift Certificates in Your Shop

Etsy does not offer site-wide gift cards, but individual sellers may provide gift certificate listings that shoppers can use in that store only. Check out Holiday How-To: Offering Services for more great tips on providing those special extra touches for your holiday shoppers.

As we quickly approach shipping cut-offs to deliver gift purchases in time for the holidays, some last-minute shoppers may appreciate the convenience of a gift certificate from your Etsy shop. We have some guidelines and tips for sellers who wish to offer gift certificates.

First and foremost, you must research and abide by any applicable local laws governing gift certificates.* This is clearly stated in the DOs & DON'Ts of Etsy, as detailed below:

Gift certificates are governed by local laws; it is the seller's responsibility to determine if they are in compliance. If you list a gift certificate on Etsy, you are responsible for this compliance.
You must include this sentence in the item listing: "This Gift Certificate is valid only in my Etsy shop, and it is only redeemable here."

If you are a seller in the USA, you may be interested in The Consumer's Union for a brief overview gift certificate laws. (This website and this article are for informative purposes only, and should not be considered legal advice.) Please refer to the laws of your state and/or country for more accurate, detailed and up-to-date information. You may wish to consult an attorney for specific questions.

When you list your gift certificate on Etsy, be sure you follow all of Etsy's rules for item listings. Here are some specific things to keep in mind:

Your listing must be for a set price; this should be the full value of the gift certificate.
Your listing must be an actual, tangible item for purchase. This could be a traditional, formal paper certificate, notecard, Moo card or something the recipient might want to hang onto a little longer, like a sticker, coaster, patch or badge. A digital file, like a .pdf, may also be acceptable.
Your listing description should be accurate and detailed. Provide all the details and terms for using the gift certificate so shoppers know exactly what they are purchasing (see below).
Be clear in your description that this gift certificate is only redeemable in the Etsy shop from which is it purchased.

Be sure to include pertinent information on your physical gift certificate and in your item listing, even if it seems obvious to you:

the name of your shop
your shop's unique web address on Etsy (for example: username.etsy.com)
the words "gift certificate"
the value of the gift certificate
a unique secret code, which the redeemer of the gift certificate will be instructed to type into the Message to Seller section when checking out (do not include this in your item listing!)
clear instructions on how to redeem the gift certificate (for example: "Go to my Etsy shop, and select the items you would like to buy with this fine gift certificate. Click the green Checkout button. In the Message to Seller section, please type in the code. I will send you a Convo to confirm your order. Thanks!")

Be organized and keep track of the code of every gift certificate that is purchased and redeemed in your shop. When the gift certificate is redeemed, you may need to send a revised PayPal invoice to the buyer if there is a remaining balance that needs to be paid on the sale.

A final point of consideration for Etsy sellers who offer gift certificates is the associated Etsy fees. Two separate transactions occur with Etsy shop gift certificates: one when the gift certificate is purchased by the gift-giver, and one when the gift certificate is redeemed by the recipient. Applicable listing and transaction fees will be reflected on your Etsy bill for both of these transactions.

Jessica Bonilla is the creator and editor of Indie Icing, a blog dishing up a delicious dose of indie handmade. After a few interesting jobs — including the National Gallery of Art and PBS — she decided to take some time off to raise her two young children. I cannot tell a lie: Christmas is my absolute favorite holiday! Waking up early and sneaking a peek inside the stockings? Check. Getting an eyeful of the twinkling white lights? Check. Overloading on nana’s traditional Southern-style feast? Check. Check. Check.

And of course, there are the gifts. No doubt, I enjoy unwrapping pretty, perfectly decorated packages on Christmas morning. However, I honestly enjoy giving gifts more. What could be better than gifting with fabulous finds from right here on Etsy? Here are a few of my picks for the holidays.

Who says gadget gear has to be blah? Certainly not VintageCoquette, who has completely funned it up with this felt manila envelope iPhone case. Perfect for the go go gadget girl or guy. $16.

Know someone who spends more time in the kitchen than anywhere else in their home? Or perhaps someone who entertains a lot? These hand-screenprinted white linen tea towels are sure to impress. By maramiki, $45.

Now here’s a show-stopper: bijougirldesigns' large blue calsilica ring on sterling silver. Great for the girl who likes to get noticed — for all the right reasons. $88.

Know someone who has trouble keeping their days straight? (Or maybe they’re just a letterpress freak like me...) missingqpress' 2010 letterpress calendar is an absolute must. It’s a gift that keeps on giving because each month can be framed and hung as art once the year is over. $35.

I love this cozy and stylish felted wool knit circle wrap. Its beautiful draping and refined styling are perfect for the gal who wants more than just another cardigan. By sandmaiden, $90.

Here’s a great gift for the design lover: NanLawson's Hello Eames No.1 original gouache painting. This one takes me back to my History of Furniture class in college. Gotta love it! $26.

Got someone hard to impress on your list? Or perhaps someone who already has everything? Well…almost everything. I bet they don’t have Snax, the snack-serving robot. This little guy even has rolling casters. How cool is that? By reclaim2fame, $98.

Men and tees go hand in hand, which is why this handle bar mustache tee is the perfect fit for the cool dudes on your list. By locomotive, $25.

With two little ones, play dough has definitely reached celebrity status in my home. Grab this five-tub set from Mama K’s and the kids will have countless hours of fun. Much better than another plastic toy! $22.

Let’s not forget the furbabies this holiday season! Set off their senses with this set of catnip eyeballs from hannapt. Come on, you know you want a pair. $10.
