Guest Curator: Indie Icing

I cannot tell a lie: Christmas is my absolute favorite holiday! Waking up early and sneaking a peek inside the stockings? Check. Getting an eyeful of the twinkling white lights? Check. Overloading on nana’s traditional Southern-style feast? Check. Check. Check.

Here’s a great gift for the design lover: NanLawson's Hello Eames No.1 original gouache painting. This one takes me back to my History of Furniture class in college. Gotta love it! $26.

Got someone hard to impress on your list? Or perhaps someone who already has everything? Well…almost everything. I bet they don’t have Snax, the snack-serving robot. This little guy even has rolling casters. How cool is that? By reclaim2fame, $98.

Men and tees go hand in hand, which is why this handle bar mustache tee is the perfect fit for the cool dudes on your list. By locomotive, $25.

With two little ones, play dough has definitely reached celebrity status in my home. Grab this five-tub set from Mama K’s and the kids will have countless hours of fun. Much better than another plastic toy! $22.

Guest Curator: The Long Thread

Ellen Luckett Baker lives with her husband and two daughters in Atlanta. A self-taught sewer, Ellen found creative inspiration and began to sew when her older daughter was born seven years ago. She is the author of The Long Thread, where she can be found sewing, crafting, and making things with her children. Her sewing patterns have been featured in several publications, and she is currently working on a sewing book for Chronicle Books to be published in 2011.

Good things come in small packages. There's something special about tiny objects — like a secret that you can slide into your pocket. I'll always remember the magic I felt as a child watching the little
ballerina twirl inside my music box. I recall the wee wooden doll that my great-uncle painted by hand, the miniature chalet with rotating figures, and the small, brightly-colored Christmas ornaments. My mother spent a lot of time working on my dollhouse — weaving a rug of felt, painting miniature plates, and taking me on frequent trips to the magical world of the dollhouse shop. It seems that my childhood
memories are filled with tiny treasures.

Growing up, opening the stocking was always one of my favorite parts of the holidays. It was notoriously crammed full, spilling out the top, and perfectly misshapen from its original form. No matter all the tiny surprises I found inside, I could always rely on a fresh orange and penny hiding underneath to fill out the toe. In my household, holiday stockings have remained a staple, hence my inspiration for today's finds. Celebrate the little things in life with each of the pocket-sized treasures below.
