Friends — doesn't receiving a gift that millions of other people have leave a little something to be desired? The thought of giving that type of gift isn't very appealing either. To cure our shopping malaise, here's my list of the top 10 unique and rare items that you won't find anywhere else:

	1. Your Book Rebuilt by TYLERBENDER Send in your favorite retired book and get back an amazing decoy journal to stash in your library. It's a great way to recycle old books, and keep nosey-rosys out of your business! $50. Find more journals from recycled materials.
	2. Hudson Valley Yarn CSA by MVKnits I'm not even a knitter, but supporting an independent fiber farm (and adorable sheep like this) has got to be really good for the karma. Personally, I'd take the yarn and make a lifelike sculpture of this sheep's head. $140 per share in the CSA. (See the video Etsy did with MVKnits.) Find more handspun yarn.
	3. Bunny Rabbit Feltidermy by girlsavage Feltidermy is taking the Etsy world by storm as a less-expensive and more-fun way of preserving the likenesses of pets that have unfortunately 'eaten the big one.' This seller will work with you to preserve the memory of a loved one's recently deceased pet, but will be "announcing the cutoff date for Christmas custom creations soon." Act now (or forever hold your peace!). This large size bunny is $120.
	4. Blue Baseball by LemonBall These unique handstitched baseballs are so old school it hurts, and are made in the ol' US of A. Speaking from experience, they make great gifts for all the sports fans on your list (who are notoriously hard to shop for.) $24. Find more balls in the Toys Category.
	5. Brief jerky by mixedspecies In economically difficult times, gifts that can serve multiple functions are the best gifts. These briefs are not only unbelievably fashionable, but they're also a great source of emergency protein. One size fits/feeds most. $139. Find more men's underwear.
	6. Cut Your Own Loaf Soap by chasestreetsoapco For all the dirty birdies in our lives, this custom soap loaf* (where you choose your own scent, color, and exfoliant) is just what the doctor ordered. Literally. *Each loaf normally yields 15-17 3.5 oz bars. $45. Find more vegan soap for men.
	7. Recycled Wine Bottle Glasses by SurfsideCreations Besides being an amazing display of craftsmanship and ingenius recycling, these wine bottle glasses would be much easier to drink out of than the hundreds of broken bottles that litter my apartment. $70. Find more recycled glassware.
	8. Commission a Pet Portrait by candiceart For the people on your list who would rather have a portrait made of their pet than get a portrait of you. $75. Find more pet portraits.
	9. Custom Thumbprint Ring by chrisparry This seller will create a true-to-life portrait of your thumbprint onto the top of a silver ring, so that future generations will always remember how OOAK you are! $249. Note: Leaving this at a crime scene would be disastrous.
	10. Custom-made 3D Island by AdmiralSlade For the recluse in your life who would rather spend the holidays on his or her own island! This little model is meant for gamers, but I think it could work as an intriguing element for your home decor. $6. You might also like terrariums.

Eloise aka HidenSeek is a renowned Bear hugger, a relentless cake-topping dismantler, an involuntarily plant killer and an amateur fairytale weaver. We invited her to curate this Shop Local guide, UK edition. Meet some artists below and match them to their items at the bottom.

So here I am Etsy! You found me... :) Where one can usually find me and that's deep in the forests of the North of England looking for inspiration or just playing carefree with all the forest creatures. Here is a rare but precious peaceful moment of me and Mr. Bear in a quiet little spot where we sometimes sit on that bench enjoying the running water, the crunching of the leaves and pushing little bugs out of our noses.

I say rare because it was one of those times that everything went truly as planned, but you have to believe me, not all times between us are as “human girl and bear very wild” co-operative!! My slightly unnerved look can prove it...Actually a few moments later... Ohh... small children may be reading... so.... everything went great :D

I think the argument started at the point where we were talking about this Shop Local gift guide... different approaches you see. Mr. Bear was thinking again with the big cavity between his head and feet (meaning his stomach rather than anything else). UK has some fine hard working bees don't get me wrong, but featuring all the honey products on Etsy just wouldn't do.

And since between the two of us only I can type, I get to pick my most dreamy gifts for a special fairytale Christmas this year!! Sorry Mr. Bear....."democratic" meritocracy wins! So enjoy some wonderful, talented artists from around the UK and their amazing handmade goodies that would make the perfect Christmas gifts.

Here we are. It's "Black Friday" again and we weren't waiting on line at the mall. There's something in the air and it's not muzak pumped throughout the florescent lit aisles of big box stores. It's been building across the world for some time now: a movement to bring together conscientious consumption and the joy of making things.

Since the Handmade Consortium launched the Buy Handmade Pledge (http://buyhandmade.org) last year, over 30,000 people have signed. Some say "hand-made is the new black" — but it's not a trend. This is about real people making changes in their everyday lives and figuring out how to make those changes lasting and sustainable. It's about being able to quit your day job and shop local. It about personal history and the inspiration behind making something of your own vision.

News from the Etsy Labs: 12/1 Craft Night

Have plans on Monday night? Well, you do now! Dust off your crafty pants and come join us for our weekly Craft Night at the Etsy Labs in Brooklyn. Each craft night is also broadcast live into in the Treehouse room of the Virtual Labs. All demos will be shown both in the Labs in Brooklyn and in the Treehouse online.

Craft Night occurs every Monday from 4-8pm at 325 Gold Street, 3rd floor in Brooklyn, New York. Each week the Etsy Labs organize a skill-sharing project. We provide supplies, tools, snacks, and know-how. Participants are also welcome to bring their own project to work on independently. Craft night is a time to make things, learn new skills, and hang out.

This week, on Monday, December 1, we will be making ornaments! We will demonstrate how to create lovely ornaments using felt and the versatile blanket stitch. These plushie ornaments are perfect to sell in your Etsy shop, decorate your home over the holiday season, and to give as gifts to friends and family.

If you are joining us virtually for Craft Night this week and would like to make ornaments along with us, you'll need a few supplies: felt, thread, scissors, sewing needle, pencil, and any embellishments you'd like to add to your ornament (buttons, lace, trim, etc). Or, just be ready to take some notes and see if this is a project you'd like to try out later on.

"In Brooklyn, it was as though you were in your own little bubble. You were all part of one big, but very close family...." Although this was uttered many years ago by a pitcher for the Dodgers, I think it still rings true today for many Brooklynites, and definitely for those who consider themselves part of the local DIY scene. We inhabit a rapidly developing part of New York City, and while some are wary of the changes, the creativity and number of artists living and working in all parts of Brooklyn is downright impressive, inspiring and exhilarating.

My Etsy shop was born 2 years ago right here in Brooklyn, and even though it's a virtual shopping experience, it isn't without a personal touch — many of my buyers tell me cute stories and inside jokes about their purchases. My favorite came from someone just a few neighborhoods over from me, truly a "Shop Local" story: she bought one of my smiling crochet s'mores for her 4-year old son, who was overjoyed at the sight of the plush and promptly named it "Fred."

They took Fred out to the Promenade, a beautiful walkway in Brooklyn with a view of the Manhattan skyline, because he wanted "to show Fred the Empire State Building." Imagine this small child, facing the glistening lights of New York skyscrapers, holding up the soft s'more in his hands! When she told me this story, I felt so happy to be part of this "little bubble." Even though I will meet very few of my customers, we are "all part of one big, but very close family."

How-Tuesday: Snowflake Gift Wrap with the NewNew Team

This week, Etsy How-Tuesday presents Kari aka ikyoto and Stella aka lookcloselypress of The {NewNew} York Team. Today we're going to learn how to screenprint our own snowflake gift wrap for the holidays. Kari and Stella remind us that recycling paper bags is a great source for materials for this kind of project.

Materials Needed:

Silk Screen
Squeegee
Paper Bags / Junk Mail / Card Stock
Scissors
Ink Spreader / Spatula / Stirring Stick
Iron
Ironing Board
A flat protected surface (table with construction paper works just fine)

Steps for Making Screenprinted Gift Wrap:

Cut up your bags until they lay flat.
Iron the bags with the iron on a cotton setting with some steam.
Lay one bag on a flat protected surface (you can tape the edges down if you like).
- Place the screen over the bag.
- Have a friend hold the screen firmly in place.
- Use an ink spreader, spatula, or stirring stick to put some ink evenly along one edge of the screen.
- Using a squeegee firmly press down and pull the ink across the design holding the squeegee at a 45º angle.
- Carefully lift the screen, while holding the paper down to separate the two.
- Repeat swiftly until you notice the ink starting to gum in the screen at which point: rinse!
