To encourage our interests in the scientific world, we were given a microscope for Christmas and would make anything we could find into slides. We'd sneak out of bed at 2 a.m. after our parents were fast asleep to magnify dead bugs, boogers, mold, potato chips, leaves, feathers, scabs, toe nails, deer droppings... nothing was off limits for two young budding scientists.</p> <p>I think it is these wonderful childhood memories that left me with a bit of a soft spot in my heart and a great appreciation for anything <a href="http://www.etsy.com/search_results.php?search_type=all&amp;search_query=nature">nature</a> or <a href="http://www.etsy.com/search_results.php?search_type=all&amp;search_query=science">science</a> related. <p>Yesterday, April 25th, was World Malaria Day. The World Health Organization (<a title="WHO malaria stats" href="http://www.who.int/mediacentre/events/annual/malaria/en/index.html" target="_blank">WHO</a>) first instituted this day at their 60th annual World Health Assembly in 2007.&nbsp; While malaria has a particularly large reach in sub-Saharan Africa, it is also a major health crisis for people in Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.&nbsp; According to WHO, about half of the world's population is at risk of malaria, and the disease infects more than 500 million people and kills more than 1 million annually.</p> <p>The good news is that several organizations, such as the <a title="Roll Back Malaria Project" href="http://www.rbm.who.int/" target="_blank">Roll Back Malaria Project</a>, are working hard to ensure there is universal coverage to prevent and treat malaria globally by December 31, 2010.
