The magazine focuses on art and artists, home design and decoration, creative do-it-yourself projects and artistic travel destinations.

The Mary Engelbreit brand has been built on the principle of living an artful life. This artist-turned-lifestyle-maven believes your home should be a personal reflection of whom you are and what you value most, that design and decorating doesn’t come from a textbook, but from the heart. Mary Engelbreit’s Home Companion provides readers with a mix of art and whimsy, a lifestyle that follows inspiration rather than fashion trends, to bring comfort and enjoyment to her loyal fans.

A few facts about Home Companion readers:

Median household income is $87,000.

99% are women.

86% took action as a result of reading Home Companion.

90% purchased handmade objects of art.

71% do home decorating.

97% say interest in creative arts will continue to influence their lifestyle.

Upcoming Ads:
Bust: December issue: 30 spots, $90 each. Spots go on sale at 1:00pm (ET) Thursday, October 2, 2008.

FAQ

1. What is the Cooperative Advertising Program?

By purchasing a spot in a Cooperative Advertising Program, Etsy sellers can show off their items in an Etsy-branded magazine advertisement, reach new buyers, and help boost their sales and shop awareness. Print ads in popular magazines are often priced out of reach of small entrepreneurs. Etsy is able to purchase larger ads for more impact, and let sellers buy into the ads.

2. How does it work?

Etsy reduces costs to sellers by subsidizing the ads. We pay half of the cost. The cost to you is the remaining amount, divided by the number of spots for sale.

Sellers get to display one image of an item from their shop, its price, its main category and their shop name. The appearance of the ad is similar to our homepage. See the original article for an example.

3. How do I purchase a spot?

1: Go to the Showcase Gateway.

2: Choose "Cooperative Ads - Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion Showcase." There will only be one date to choose from.

3: Hit the "Purchase" button. The fee will be added to your normal Etsy bill.

*Note: The items that appear in the Showcase section of "Your Etsy" will not affect this purchase. The item photo that you send in via email to adam@etsy.com will be what appears in the ad. There is not an online Showcase associated with this purchase!

4. What do I do next?

You'll receive a conversation from Adam with details, and we will need the following from you:

Your shop name.

The price of the item.

The main category that the item is listed under.

A high-resolution photograph of your item. This means 300 dpi, at 1.25 inch (L) x 1 inch (H) size.

If you need help with photo issues, please ask, and Adam will send you detailed instructions. If you already have a photo that you like, great! If not, check out some of our photography tips.

We will need your image by 3:00pm (ET) on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 to give us time to lay out the ad and meet our deadline with Home Companion.

5. How many spots can I reserve?

You can purchase one spot per advertisement.

6. Can I cancel a spot after I've made a reservation? Is the fee refunded?

We will only cancel and refund spots under very special circumstances. Deciding you are no longer interested in your spot does not count. If you feel like you really have a valid case please email adam@etsy.com.

7. How do I know if the current Cooperative Ad is right for me?

Do some research! We'll provide helpful info for each ad as it becomes available (see above). And, it may be helpful to visit your local bookstore or newsstand to see if they carry the magazine. Remember, there will be more of these Cooperative Advertising opportunities available in the future, including Craft, Venus, and Bust. If you don't feel like Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion is perfect for you, there will be other opportunities...

She edits all of the crafty content for the magazine—everything from Halloween costumes to rainy day activities. Amanda also writes weekly for the Parents blog, GoodyBlog where she generally shares kid-friendly craft ideas. She lives in Brooklyn, NY and has a niece and nephew that serve as the perfect test market for her crafty brainstorms.

My first occupational incarnation was that of a gallery assistant (endearingly nicknamed a "gallerina"). I had gone to art school with all hopes of being a “working” artist, so I figured I’d learn the behind-the-scenes biz in order to figure out my direct path to the walls of a gallery. And now, ten years later, I am the Arts & Crafts Editor at Parents Magazine. Ok, officially, my title is Lifestyle Director, but translated, that means I develop all D.I.Y. content for the magazine. So I’d like to believe that I am, in fact, a working artist—perhaps a bit different than I had planned, but an artist at work nonetheless. I’ve made it to the printed page with the wonders of chenille stems and glitter rather than to the walls with oil paintings and photographs. And I’m happy.

Having worked in galleries (and landing that employee discount) and collected many artist friends through the years, my walls have become a personal art museum of sorts. I tend to believe that what hangs on our walls is very often (if not always) a reflection of ourselves—our aesthetic, our beliefs, and sometimes, our autobiographies. I am constantly rearranging my art—I move my bedroom pieces to the living room and I incessantly change out photos and vintage flash cards in my favorite glass-to-glass float frames.

These days, art in the age of mechanical reproduction (clearly I had to read the Walter Benjamin essay in art school) is way more affordable, and therefore can be impermanent. And no doubt, Etsy is the one-stop shop for adorable, creative, inventive, and eclectic everything—including wall décor.

I’ve curated a little exhibition, so to speak, of some fantastic stand-outs. And check it out…every piece here will fit in a 9x12-inch frame…so buy one frame (or two), and change it up! Change is good, so they say.

I love this patchwork giraffe by BoutikiHut; the patterns and colors work so unexpectedly well together.

While I’m on the collage trend, this beautiful peacock caught my eye. It is made completely of magazine clippings. All of the prints by artandphilanthropy are fashioned from recycled papers.

I totally love this idea—silhouette portraits of your children (and you, if you so choose). You can select from over twenty pre-existing designs, which can include pets, adult figures, tutus, and tree swings, or you can send a photo to lepapierdesigns for a totally custom print.

Isn’t it impossible to walk across a hopscotch board without jumping into the squares? Keep the nostalgia alive in this very cool, moody photo by buckscountyframes.

Is there a child that exists without an innate love of all things cupcake? (We at Parents magazine simply can’t get enough of them! Check out Goodyblog for proof!) How cute would this print by calobee be hanging next to the boy version?

Take advantage of the wall as disciplinarian…frame a few of these by johnwgolden to keep the kids in line.

This image by 3LambsGraphics is just so sweet, I couldn’t resist!

Here is a perfect example of how you can have artwork look and feel so handmade and original in this drawing by kikiandpolly.

So the moral of my story is to not be afraid of art or feel that every choice you make is the absolute and final one. Kids love variety and will learn and observe something new from every item you hang in their environment. Yes, hammering a nail in the wall can feel like a big commitment, but perhaps now you’re inspired to really change it up when it’s time to deck your walls.

Handmade Kids Series | Special Kids Showcase | Baby Gift Guide | Children Gift Guide

It must be a tough gig working for Cookie and looking at cute photos and products all day! We asked Joanna to do a Top 10 Lists for families on the go. Below you'll find her picks...

When I started blogging for Cookie last year, I knew I wanted kids, but it all seemed far off. Now that I've spent twelve months immersed in handmade kids' toys, artwork, booties and oh-so-cute knit hats, I'm ready to go.

I daydream about being a Manhattan mom, taking my baby swinging at the playground, choosing stinky cheeses at Murray's, and people-watching on the bus. After combing through Etsy wares, here's a daydreamy list of what I'd recommend for moms on-the-go.

1. Cabbage Rose Cap by damestarbaby, $45.

2. Wooden Toy Phone by woodmouse, $15.

3. Gears and Sprockets Toddler Dress by aprilscott, $34.

2: Choose "Cooperative Ads - BUST Showcase." There will only be one date to choose from.

A high-resolution photograph of your item (300 dpi).

If you need help with photo issues, please ask, and Adam will send you detailed instructions. If you already have a photo that you like, great! If not, check out some of our photography tips.

We will need your image by 7:00pm (Eastern Time) on Thursday, July 31, 2008 to give us time to lay out the ad and meet our deadline with Bust.

7. The combination of today’s indie culture and the modern, independent young women behind the movement makes for tomorrow’s trend.

Venus Zine is more than a publication. It’s a community of thought leaders who distinguish themselves as both fans and creators in this groundbreaking culture. These readers drive other young women into new aspirations, products, and services. Venus Zine is in constant dialog with these leaders — reaching them at events, online, in print, and on the phone."

A few facts about Venus Zine readers:

84% are women.

95% access the internet daily.

82% shop on the internet.

70% buy clothes/accessories at least once a month.

77% visited in person; visited a website or called a company that advertised in the magazine.

79% showed someone an article or ad that appeared in Venus Zine.

FAQ

2: Choose "Cooperative Ads - Venus Zine Showcase." There will only be one date to choose from.

This means 300 dpi, at 1.25" x 1" (L x H) size. Otherwise known as a horizontal rectangle.

If you need help with photo issues, please ask, and Adam will send you detailed instructions. If you already have a photo that you like, great! If not, check out some of our photography tips.

We will need your image by 3:00pm (Eastern Time) on Monday, July 21, 2008 to give us time to lay out the ad and meet our deadline with Venus Zine.

Remember, there will be more of these Cooperative Advertising opportunities available in the future, including Craft, Bust, and Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion. If you don't feel like Venus is perfect for you, there will be other opportunities...

Upcoming Ads: 2008 Calendar coming soon. Check back!

FAQ

Otherwise known as a horizontal rectangle.

If you need help with photo issues, please ask, and Adam will send you detailed instructions. If you already have a photo that you like, great! If not, check out some of our photography tips.

We will need your image by 3:00pm (ET) on Monday, June 30, 2008 to give us time to lay out the ad and meet our deadline with Home Companion.

She's in high demand over here at the Etsy Labs — often acting as the liaison between the Marketing, Labs, Storque, and Teams Team. She's full of fresh ideas and know-how.

Christina was the original founder of Adorn Magazine and before that worked as a craft lady preparing projects for craftbooks and magazines.

MP4 | Youtube | Blip.tv | Subscribe in iTunes

Christina Fun Facts:

Christina does some mean karaoke.

She's crazy for acupuncture.

She's from Long Island, but doesn't have an accent. As Adam puts it, "Local Girl Makes Good."

She started her own magazine Adorn, before she started at Etsy.

She was originally a painter, before the craft set in.

She's one of the best-dressed admin, often wearing something of her own creation.

Christina broke up the "boy's club" that Matt and Adam had in the marketing office (after Vanessa moved to Storque Team).

She has a bit of a tchotchke habit, recently curbed.

She enjoys Korean barbecue.

According to Adam, she copies what he has for lunch sometimes (when we eat out of the fridge).

She is a fan of giant sunglasses.

At first glance, she seems quite "proper," but is actually pretty sassy.

Christina, girl, you wore those braces with pride! And Christina tells me she cut her bangs herself. Where I grew up, we called doing them up like that a "Bouffe," which was our mall-rat terminology. According to Christina, she was actually going for more of an edgy "Robert Smith" look.

Oh, c'mon! Baby Christina was so stylin'. I wish I had that yellow coat right now! And the wallpaper. Very, very rad. What a doll — a little Miss Batch out of a children's book, living on her own in a little brick house. 'Ello. Do come in and have some tea.

Etsy has had quite a growth spurt in the past year, and we have the awkward pictures to prove it. We've been posting a series of About Us pieces to help you get to know the Etsy admin (and since many of us work remotely, for the admin to get to know each other!). You've seen the admin badge, and maybe you're a bit curious about the person behind it! For more on Etsy's mission and about the company, please see our About page (the link is in the little blue footer of every Etsy page).

Christina picked some of her favorites for the items below...

With an attitude that is fierce, funny, and proud to be female, BUST's revolutionary editorial mix addresses a refreshing variety of women's interests, including pop culture, music, crafting, fashion, sex, news, and celebrity interviews. Hip, humorous, and honest, BUST is a cheeky celebration of all things female and a trusted authority on up-and-coming trends among young women.

98% of the readers are women.

Average income is $69,000.

Median age is 27.

80% of readers refer to BUST for fashion.

91% say BUST is their favorite magazine.

68% purchased from BUST advertisers last year.

FAQ

2: Choose "Cooperative Ads - BUST Showcase." There will only be one date to choose from.

A high-resolution photograph of your item (300 dpi).

If you need help with photo issues, please ask, and Adam will send you detailed instructions. If you already have a photo that you like, great! If not, check out some of our photography tips.

We will need your image by 3:00pm (Eastern Time) on Monday, June 2, 2008 to give us time to lay out the ad and meet our deadline with Bust.

Remember, there will be more of these Cooperative Advertising opportunities available in the future, including Craft, Venus, and Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion. If you don't feel like Bust is perfect for you, there will be other opportunities...

Kiki lets fashion be a lens through which girls can explore their creativity and develop a sense of self-expression. We love Kiki's message, and here are Abi's top Etsy picks for teens and tweens everywhere!

Teens and tweens are often bombarded with celebrity fashion and mass-produced clothes with little originality, but that’s where we come in! Here at Kiki, we want to help each reader develop a sense of style that reflects her own personality. We try to introduce our readers to unique, one of a kind, independent-minded designers, so that’s why we regularly turn to Etsy. Not only is Etsy the perfect place to find one-of-a-kind items, it’s also a great example of entrepreneurs from around the world coming together to showcase their talent and support the talent of others. That’s a mission we can get on board with!

So without further delay, here are my top picks for tweens!

In every issue of Kiki we leave a space blank so readers can create their own “inspiration page,” but sometimes one page just isn’t enough. If that’s the case, it’s a great idea to carry around a blank notebook because you never know when a rush of creativity might strike! I like the idea of taking something old and making it new again, so I especially love the repurposed vintage pattern on Theothersister’s notebook.

We featured this resin cupcake necklace with real sprinkles (that’s right, real sprinkles) by Lunaricsales in our spring issue, and it’s been one of the most popular items yet. It’s whimsical, fun, and looks good enough to eat!

This is by far the best camera camera case I’ve ever seen. I love the juxtaposition of new vs. old technology; placing a teeny tiny digital camera in an older-automatic-looking case. Unfortunately, they’re currently all sold out, so until Hine has more, perhaps her camera brooch will hold you over.

SmarmyPants makes the most delicious looking pincushions. I love absolutely everything about this one: the frosting, the sprinkles, the whipped cream, the striped strawberry on top, even the tiny hand stitches in matching thread.

Going “green” can be somewhat intimidating, but a great way to start is carrying a reusable lunch bag. This one by parischicboutique is great because it’s simple, chic, sophisticated, and eco-friendly. Who knew a lunch bag could be so many things? Visez Vert!

The artist behind vmdesigns was inspired by her own tween daughter when creating this quirky necklace, and it definitely shows. It’s creative, colorful, sparkly, and personalized. What more could a tween want?

These rings by soop just make me happy, and I’m sure they would do the same for any tween or teen out there. You can literally create a whole farm on your fingers.

Roselabiche creates designs with a balance between the “wow factor” and the everyday wear and tear on a garment. Her “Amelie” design definitely has the wow factor, and it’s hand sewn as well as machine washable, not to mention totally unique. It could quite possibly be the world’s best t-shirt!

No two of GuerillaEmbroidery’s hair-ties are ever alike. All are embroidered on 100% wool and finished with hand sewn details. If you love the design, but don’t have long hair, she also makes beautiful brooches. She definitely has something for everyone.

I love fabricfarrago’s thumbtacks covered in fabric, especially these sushi ones. They’re a great way to add some life to a boring bulletin board.

What’s not to love about PaisleyChainsaw’s necklace featuring a lego shark eating a Snickers bar? Not much, not much at all.

And finally, I think this vintage jacket from sunshinecitylassie’s store speaks for itself. It’s as though it was custom made for the magazine! I snatched this one up quickly, and we’re going to take turns wearing it in the office.

Hopefully one day, current Kiki readers will turn into future Etsy sellers!

If my picks left you wanting to know more about Kiki, cruise through our web site at www.kikimag.com. You can find out about our seven departments and more information on the overall concept of the magazine.

What do you think is a great item for teens and tweens? Leave it in the comments!
