News From the Craft + Style Blogosphere: November 13, 2008

Lately my mind has been taken over with "fashion thoughts." I spend my nights poring over the internet in search of the perfect coat (hood + long + wool + certain indescribable quality that makes it impossible to find), the perfect winter hat (not itchy + slouchy, but not too slouchy), the perfect rain boots: basically, the perfect winter wardrobe. It's taken over my mind's eye! Therefore, I must say: If you find something amazing that fits within these parameters, leave it in the comments! I'd be much obliged.

Now that I've gotten that off my chest, on with the show! This week's edition of News From the Craft + Style Blogosphere is complete with Swedish blogging, mid-century videos of thoroughly modern machines, gorgeous decor, avant garde fashion courtesy of Facehunter and found photos.

East Nashville artist Agnes Barton-Sabo aka Betty Turbo is all about cupcakes and moustaches! Agnes grew up in Alaska with an artistic family. Mom was an incredible seamstress who made matching outfits for Agnes and her dolls. Dad was an art history professor fascinated with animal spirits and great grandma was an interior designer in the 30's. Agnes took inspiration from her family and went on to college for photography.

After school she moved to East Nashville for a letterpress job at Hatch Show Print shop. Letterpress became a way for Agnes to combine her interests in photography, vintage advertising, beards and cupcakes!

I'm pretty sure anyone who knows me has found out about my obsession with mustaches, moustaches, handlebars, fu manchus, walruses (my favorite!) and mustachios. I like them all, and I like them alot! In fact, I like to search for all those terms on a daily basis just to keep up with what's new in the world of facial hair themed goods on Etsy.

Etsy How-to: Make a Miniature Moustache

This week, Christine (aka iheartmoustaches) breaks it on down and shows us how to use #6 plastic to create miniature moustaches! (Christine has made a bunch of these in the past, as she is a lover of the moustache in all its various forms.) #6 plastic is not recycleable in New York and so this is a great way to upcycle those strawberry containers and Chinese take out containers and keep them out of the landfill. This project is awesome for people who need a moustache on the go.

She's also open sourcing two of her moustache designs. You can download "The Professor" and "The Lady's Man" in this pdf!

We did some measuring and the moustaches started out 6 inches wide and ended up 2 1/4 inches wide. That means it shrunk to almost 1/3 its original size!

You may have noticed the moustache trend whipping around the internets, bristling and brandishing crumbs defiantly. Well, here's an update, care of Etsy admin Daniellexo: faux goatees.

Beards having been getting a toehold in the media lately, what with world-weary writers on strike, politicians bucking the system after being rejected by the mainstream.
