PayPal Workshop in Etsy's Virtual Labs

On August 31, 2009, PayPal customer service representatives Deb and Tim hosted a live Virtual Labs chat to answer sellers' questions about PayPal and walk Etsy sellers through some of the features and tools that PayPal offers. If you missed the workshop, you can watch clips below and check out the links that were shared by the PayPal team.

1: Verifying Payment

How do you know you received payment from a buyer? Tim walks you through the multiple ways to find out. You can even use PayPal's download log feature to view your transactions in a spreadsheet or in software like Quicken or Quickbooks. For more information: Downloadable History.

2. Shipping and Seller Protection

Tip: When shipping on your PayPal invoice is incorrect, it's often a problem in your PayPal account settings. If you need to revise the invoice for the customer, go to your PayPal account and click on "request money."
Then, be sure to enable transaction-based override:
    1.    Log in to your account at http://www.paypal.com/.
    2.    Go to My Account > Profile > Shipping calculations (in the Selling Preferences column)
    3.    Select the Shipping Method and click Edit
    4.    Select Yes for "Use the shipping fee in the transaction instead of my calculator's settings" and press Save Changes.
Please note that if you have not set up any Shipping Calculations in PayPal, the default is to override shipping methods per transaction. (You should not need to change anything.)

Meet Bryan Schwab, an Etsy Admin who works on the Engineering Team. Bryan has been with the Etsy engineering team since January of 2008 and focuses mainly on payment system projects. He's based on the West coast, so we don't get to see him face-to-face all that often. We wish we could! His well-tempered voice comes through as insightful and business-minded when we hear him on the daily Engineering Team conference call.

Bryan Fun Facts:

Bryan used to work at eBay.
He speaks German and has a viking beard.
Schwab actually means Q-tip in German.
Bryan is also very tall.
He's a family man, with a wee one (actually not so wee! A 10-pounder!) recently born.
He lives in the San Francisco Bay area with his wife and two young children, though he lived in Manhattan for one year.
He is obsessed with Abe Lincoln.
He recently bought a painting with Boston terriers.
He ran a marathon.
According to Dan, he's really good at shaking exactly two aspirin out of the bottle.
He's an iPhone wiz and has every app known to man or beast, including that one that recognizes music.
His ringtone is Starship's "We built this city."
His first concert was Pearl Jam.
Bryan is a really good guitar player, and you can see awkward youth Bryan jammin' below. We think he looks like the perfect Zep fan.

Tech Update: Checkout Updates

Checkout is a core experience on Etsy, one which we are working to improve. Our goals for Checkout are to make it easy for buyers to purchase items on Etsy and to reduce the occurrence of buyers who complete Checkout on Etsy but do not complete payment on PayPal.

Today, we completed the first phase of updating the Etsy Checkout process. This first phase consists of improving messaging. Our changes include:

Updating the language on each page of Checkout to better inform buyers on the steps required to checkout.
Changing the wording on the third page of Checkout. This page is now messaged to the buyer as the "Final Review" page. Also, the button to continue is now called "Commit To Buy" — driving home the point that they still need to pay, whether with PayPal or any other method.
Updating the design of the last page of Checkout. See below for a screenshot. When using PayPal, we now tell the buyer how many payments are remaining and clearly provide a payment status on each item.

Looking into the future, we are planning a number of improvements to the Checkout process. For now, we hope you check out the new Checkout as you're checking out with some great handmade and vintage items!

Tech Update: Pay Your Etsy Bill with PayPal Now Available

Sellers,

After a smooth and productive beta test, we're very happy to announce the full public release of functionality that allows you to pay your Etsy bills via PayPal. You will now see an option for PayPal under "Method of payment" when you go to Your Etsy > Your Etsy Bill > Make a payment.

When you select PayPal as your method of payment on this screen and click "Submit Payment," you will be taken to PayPal. Log into PayPal to complete the payment. You will be directed back to Etsy upon completion of the transaction.

Paying your Etsy bill with PayPal is optional. You can still pay your Etsy bill via the credit card you have on file with Etsy. Regardless of whether you pay your Etsy bill with PayPal or credit card, Etsy sellers need to keep a valid credit card on file with Etsy because we require a valid credit card to become an Etsy seller at this time.

With this release we are also removing the minimum payment amount for seller fee payments, whether paid by credit card or PayPal. Previously, Etsy only accepted payments of $1 or more from sellers. This is no longer the case—Etsy sellers will be expected to pay their bills in full regardless of the amount. So, if you are billed $0.60, you can now pay $0.60, and you have the option to pay via PayPal.

We'd like to thank all the beta testers for their valuable feedback. Here are answers to some frequently asked questions.

Can I pay my bill with my PayPal account?
Yes. Go to Your Etsy > Your Etsy Bill, select the PayPal option and click the green button that says Submit Payment. You will be directed to PayPal and prompted to log in to your PayPal account. Log in, review your payment and click “Pay Now”. You will then be redirected back to Etsy to conclude the transaction. If you pay via PayPal eCheck, your payment will be held as "Pending" until the payment clears, and your bill balance will not change until your payment is cleared.

Can I pay my bill with my PayPal account directly, without signing into Etsy?
No. You must pay your bill by signing in to Etsy and going to Your Etsy > Your Etsy Bill.

Is there a minimum amount I must owe Etsy before I can pay my bill?
No. There is no minimum amount you must owe Etsy before you can pay your bill. If you are billed $0.20, you can pay $0.20. You have the option to pay your bill via PayPal or with the credit card you have on file with Etsy. Etsy sellers are expected to pay their bills in accordance with our collection policy.

Do I have to use the PayPal account I use to accept payments on Etsy to pay my bill via PayPal or can I use another PayPal account?
You can pay your Etsy bill with any PayPal account you like.

Can I sign up as a seller on Etsy with a PayPal account, and use that to pay my fees?
No. Etsy accepts PayPal as a way to pay your bill but we still require a valid credit card to become an Etsy seller.

Etsy says my payment is "Pending." Why? How long will it remain pending?
A “Pending” status results when a payment is made with PayPal eCheck. eCheck payments are usually made when your PayPal account does not have a balance, and does not have a secondary backup funding source associated with it. eCheck payments made from a PayPal account associated with a U.S. bank account will be held as pending for 3-4 business days. eCheck payments made from a PayPal account associated with a bank account outside the U.S. will usually be held as pending for 7-8 business days. When the electronic funds transfer clears your bank, the payment will be completed, and your Etsy bill balance will be updated accordingly.

We hope you find this feature convenient. Let us know what you think in this dedicated discussion thread in our Forums. We will be sending an email out to all Etsy sellers regarding these changes before the next billing cycle.

Tech Updates: Beta Release of Etsy Bill Payment with PayPal

Today, Etsy is kicking off a beta test of functionality that allows sellers to pay their Etsy bills via PayPal. Many of you have asked to be able to pay your Etsy bills with PayPal. International sellers in particular overwhelmingly prefer PayPal as a method of payment, and sellers have told us it would be convenient to pay their Etsy bill with the same PayPal account they use to collect payments from sales on Etsy.

A small group of Etsy sellers will begin testing this functionality today. Once we have their feedback, we will communicate more details about the timing of a full launch. Details will be announced here on the Etsy Blog, in the Etsy Forums and to the Etsy News email list.

We have also updated the Etsy-to-PayPal experience: Etsy branding has been incorporated into the PayPal checkout pages linked from Etsy. This is designed to reduce buyer confusion during checkout. Now, when a buyer is sent to PayPal from Etsy during the Etsy checkout process, the Etsy logo will be visible at the top of the pages where the payment is made. We think this will help lessen the confusion experienced by some new buyers on Etsy, as we've seen in user testing, research, survey results and feedback from the community.

Billing Alert: Change to Overdue Bill Collection

Note, you can now pay your Etsy bill using PayPal. Read about this new option here. We now accept payments under $1, so we expect all sellers to pay the full amount due, even if your bill is less than $1.

Hi Etsians, my name is Sinohe and I'm Etsy's Controller (aka bean counter). Behind the scenes, all of us have been working hard to improve the overall Etsy experience and to put Etsy on a path to be a lasting and profitable company. Like many other businesses, Etsy relies on collecting fees from our members in order to continue developing and growing our business. The majority of Etsy sellers do pay their bills promptly and in full, and, for that, we are very thankful. However, there are also some sellers who allow their bills to become overdue.

Etsy will be emailing a reminder to those sellers who have overdue bills. The email will outline how to pay and the consequences for non-payment. We want to provide everyone the opportunity to settle their account balances. We do realize that this is a busy time for everyone but think that it is important enough of an issue to address it with the November billing cycle.

Two weeks after the initial email referenced above, Etsy will begin to send seller accounts with bills over 90 days past due to a third-party collection agency. This means that if a seller still holds an unpaid balance from August 2008 fees or prior, then that seller may receive a letter or other communication from a collection agency on behalf of Etsy about settling his/her outstanding balance. Before sending a seller to the third-party collection agency, Etsy will attempt to notify him/her a final time by email. This new step of involving a collection agency as a regular part of our collection process is the only change to our billing procedure at this time. This is not an action we take lightly, but it is one that is important for building Etsy as a lasting company.

We hope to only use the collection agency as a last resort, and you can help us avoid it by responsibly paying your bill on time. If your bill is overdue and consequently you are unable to list, relist and renew items, please sign in and pay your bill to have your shop privileges reinstated. If your account is closed and you still owe fees to Etsy, please email billing@etsy.com to discuss paying your bill and reinstating your account.

Tech Updates: Etsy Shopper Survey Results & Payment Enhancements

A big thank-you to everyone who took our brief Shopper Survey! We've been working on a number of important payments-related enhancements and your feedback is critical. These surveys are a fast and efficient way to get structured feedback from many of you; they complement our usability testing, traffic analyses and financial metrics.

We wanted to share some of the results of this survey with you:

In the five days that the survey was offered, we received close to 3,000 responses from shoppers throughout the United States and in the United Kingdom, Australia, Argentina, Aruba, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Thailand! Clearly, the Etsy community is global, and one of our follow-up surveys in the New Year will focus more on international buyers and sellers.

PayPal was the overwhelming current preferred method of payment, with 90% of respondents preferring to log in directly to PayPal to make purchases, rather than to not log in and use a credit card processed by PayPal (PayPal calls this 'Guest Checkout').

In response to our question about future methods of payment, PayPal was also the winner by a 40% margin over the other possibilities presented: credit cards processed by Etsy, credit cards processed by PayPal, Direct Debit, Google Checkout and Amazon Payments.

Etsy's site search was the number-one way respondents said they find items on Etsy. As noted recently by VP of Product Management Sara Hicks, we're working hard to make improvements so stay tuned. Browsing categories and Favorites were the next most popular ways to find items on Etsy.

Speaking of Favorites, 95% of respondents said they actively add items to their Favorites and 50% said they add items to their Favorites almost every time they visit Etsy. 75% of respondents said they regularly purchase items they've added to their Favorites. We knew Favorites were important and this was a welcome confirmation.

We also received many thoughtful responses to the open-ended survey questions about Etsy's current checkout process and overall shopping experience. The responses ran the gamut from "Everything is amazing!" to "It's terrible! Fix it!" Many respondents said they found the jump to PayPal during checkout confusing at first. We're going to be incorporating Etsy branding into the PayPal checkout pages linked from Etsy to lessen the confusion experienced by some new buyers.

And as noted last month by CEO Maria Thomas, we're going to be offering sellers the option to pay their Etsy bill using PayPal in the coming weeks. These enhancements are a small part of a comprehensive look at all payments processes on Etsy. Improving the checkout process and shopping experience on Etsy is one of our major focus projects for 2009.

Summary of April 25, 2008 Community Chatt: IHPS, part deux

Hi there Sellers!

Last Friday's Virtual Labs' Community Chatt (this time with Bethela, marymary, and HeyMichelle) was about gathering specific feedback from sellers for Etsy's research into an in-house payment system (IHPS). This is a project that we have recently started to look in to, and we want to get feedback from the Community (aka sellers and buyers) as we begin our research.

Please see last week's Community Chatt summary for a bit more info on this project.

Thanks again to everyone who participated! The info that we have gathered in these chats, and in forum threads started by our Community have been integral to the research of this project.

This was the agenda:

1. International Sellers: please let us know what issues surrounding an in-house payment system would affect you. For example, credit cards are uncommon in many countries, so discussing other payment options that would make sense for you would be pertinent.

2. Features that you would like to see in an in-house payment system. Think about other sites that you visit or sell on: what checkout options do they offer that you would like to see?

3. Etsy Policies: what policies for an IHPS do you think are fair and helpful for buyers and sellers on Etsy?

4. Discuss alternatives to an Etsy in-house payment system.

5. Discuss PayPal's services and Amazon's in-house payment system. What do you like and dislike about these services? What could Etsy incorporate and learn from?

Summary of Community Chatt with Matt from April 18, 2008

Hi there Sellers!

Last Friday's Community Chatt was about the idea of Etsy developing an in-house payment system (IHPS). This is a project that we have recently started to research, and we want to get feedback from the Community (aka sellers and buyers) early on in these preliminary phases.

Here is a rough sketch of the benefits that an in-house payment system would offer:

1. The ability to accept credit cards on site, which is especially important as Etsy expands its reach to buyers who are not particularly internet savvy and don't use PayPal.

2. Reduce non-paying and slow-paying buyers.

3. The ability to offer site-wide gift certificates.

4. Unified cart/single check out for multiple items

Sellers had a lot of questions and concerns about the in-house payment system, which we are taking into consideration as we research this idea. These were the top things that we heard from sellers during the Chatt:

1. Sellers would like participation in IHPS to be optional, and they would like to have the option to accept all forms of payment that are currently available.

2. Etsy must provide excellent customer service and have sound policies regarding the payment system.

3. Lots of issues regarding international sellers.

4. Sellers would like many of the same services as PayPal offers, such as the option to print a shipping label.

Tech Update: Changes to the Final Checkout Page

Based on the community's feedback and suggestions, we have been able to make several tweaks to the final checkout page (aka page 4) during the payment process!

The changes break down like this:

The biggest change you will notice is the big green button that says "Pay with PayPal" rather than the former text link.
We changed the text from "total for this order" to "total for this seller."
We changed the text from "Please send all payments now. Remember you have to pay each seller individually" to "Pay each seller individually. Each order is not complete until you pay."
We changed the credit-card-through-PayPal help button to say: "Use PayPal for credit cards. Need PayPal help?"
Changed the text from "view full receipt" to "view full invoice;" this lets the buyer know that they aren't finished yet!
Changed the text and wording of the help guide for payments on the right hand column of the screen.

Thanks again for all of your feedback and suggestions; this is something that we have been working on to create less confusion during the checkout process and less work for our sellers! Can't Post New Listings? Overdue Etsy Bill

At 7pm EST tonight (Midnight UTC), some Etsy sellers may have a confused look on their faces. If you have overdue bills — as described in this post — you will not be able to list new items until you pay. We know there are many of you out there! You haven't been reading the announcements!

Or, perhaps you don't have the cash. The average overdue bill is a measly eight dollars. Thus...

Eight ways to make $8. There's so much free money out there!

Take your old books to resell at a bookstore; old clothes to the consignment shop; sell DVDs and CDs you no longer use.
Recycle your cans.
Have a bake sale.
Empty out your old bags and wallets and search in coat pockets and under couch pillows.
Sell your hair.
Check the gigs section of Craiglist.
Give blood.
Take your guitar/flute/kazoo to the park to make a little extra cash.

Billing Alert: Reminder to Pay Overdue Bills

We just wanted to post one more Storque reminder to pay your overdue bills by 23:59 UTC on the 15th of the January because of these new...consequences. This sounds more ominous than it really is! You can contact billing@etsy.com if you're having problems, but please do so before the 14th. Open communication is the way to go!

How to Deposit Your PayPal Funds into Your Bank Account (To Pay Your Etsy Bill!)

Ever wondered if you could pay your Etsy Bill with PayPal?

If you have funds in your PayPal account that you would like to use to pay your Etsy bill, here's how!

You will need a bank card with a credit card logo on it, some funds in your PayPal account, and 15 minutes. PayPal says it can take 3-4 business days for the funds to appear in your bank account, so make sure to do this ASAP to give you time to pay your Etsy bill. Ready? Ok!

1. Set up your Etsy account to pay your bill with your bank card (with credit card logo).

a. Go to Your Etsy.

b. Click Account Info (on the left side).

c. Go to the bottom of the screen, and choose click here to change your billing info.

d. Enter the information for your bank card. The CCV # is the 3 digit number on the back of your card in the signature box.

e. Click Validate Card.

2. Withdraw funds from your PayPal account, and put them in your bank account.

a. Go to PayPal.

b. Log in to your PayPal account.

c. Click Withdraw.

d. Click Withdraw funds to your bank account.

e. If you have previously registered your bank account with PayPal, it will appear here. Make sure it is selected in the drop down menu.

If you have not registered your bank account with PayPal, do that. Here is PayPal's help article on how to add a bank account (don't worry, it's easy!). After you have added the bank account, you will be able to withdraw funds.

f. Enter the amount that you would like to transfer. Click submit.

3. Wait until the funds are in your bank account. This will take several days. Live life & craft while you wait!

4. Pay your Etsy bill.

a. Go to Your Etsy.

b. Click Your Etsy Bill (under Money on the left side).

c. Click Make a Payment Now.

d. Select an amount to pay.

e. Double check that your method of payment is the bank card that you set up in Step 1.

f. Click Submit Payment.

And you're done!

How much does it cost to withdraw funds from PayPal to a bank account?

According to PayPal's fee page, it is free for U.S. bank accounts. There may be a fee for non-U.S. accounts. Please contact PayPal for questions regarding PayPal fees.

Is there a faster way to use my PayPal funds to pay my Etsy bill?

Some Etsy sellers use the PayPal debit card, which will deduct the money from your PayPal account without having to do a bank transfer. You can learn more about this at PayPal (click on the Products and Services link).

Billing Alert: A Reminder about the New Policy for the New Year

Attention sellers! This is an important message about your Etsy bill!

In order to keep Etsy growing, we rely on the fees we collect from sellers. This is vital to the success and future of Etsy. As of January 1, 2008, a new Billing Policy will be put in place to motivate sellers to settle overdue accounts.

This is how billing works:

* Your balance from the previous month is due on the 1st of the following month.
* Your balance must be paid in full by 23:59 UTC on the 15th of the month.
* Accounts not paid up by that time are considered overdue.
* Accounts 2 months overdue will automatically be suspended from listing, relisting, and renewing items.
* Accounts 3 months overdue will be suspended.

The following is a description and examples of how this will affect sellers who have not been paying bills.

Your September bill was due October 1. If you didn't pay it, that bill became overdue on October 15th. On November 15th, it became 1 month overdue. On December 15th, it became 2 months overdue. On January 15th, 3 months overdue.

If your bill is 2 months overdue, you will automatically be unable to list, relist, and renew items. If this happens, pay your bill to have your listing privileges reinstated.

If your bill is 3 months overdue, your account may be suspended. If this happens, email billing@etsy.com to discuss paying your bill and reinstating your account.

This policy goes into effect on January 1st and you should pay by January 15th at 23:59 UTC, or you will have to deal with these penalties.

Please, please pay your bills. If you do it now, you will save yourself a big hassle. And you will save Customer Support many, many headaches (and time not spent helping newbie shoppers!).

When to Pay Your Etsy Bill

Dear Sellers!

Your Etsy bill is due on the 1st of each month and you can pay it at any time. It becomes overdue on the 15th of the month, at which point you may start to notice some nagging reminders popping up in Your Etsy.

In order to clear up some confusion about billing, we've extended the payment grace period until 12:00 am on the 16th of each month, meaning you will not see any nagging overdue notices until then. Our billing time is in UTC (UTC is Coordinated Universal Time), so that's midnight for folks in London and 7:00 pm on the 15th for the East coast of the USA.

And don't forget, starting on January 16th, 2008 (UTC) we'll be taking action on overdue accounts, so make sure you're current!

Hey Sellers!

January is only two months away now, so we want to remind everyone to make sure they pay those bills soon. We will have penalties for overdue bills in the New Year and we'd love to get everyone started off in 2008 on a clean slate.

Remember, no more auto-billing either! So go to Your Etsy > Your Etsy Bill and take a look at your bill.

Customer Care Tip: Do You Know Where Your Payment Is?

I hear the cries of a NEW seller off in the distance...

"I made my first sale, but where's my PayPal payment?!"

To which I pose this follow-up question, "Is it marked as 'received payment' when you go to the Sold (orders) section of Your Etsy page?"

When the response makes its way back, there is the occasional "YES!"

If your buyer swears they sent the fundage, but it's nowhere to be found, you should first venture over to the Your Etsy page and click on "Payment Methods" under Shop Setup. Find the check box for PayPal and you will see the email address you have listed to link your Etsy shop to your PayPal account. We commonly find that this email has a typo or you have changed your email at PayPal, so be sure to adjust it here!

You may have to contact PayPal to find the missing payment, but be sure to keep your buyers up to date on anything regarding their transaction. Send them a convo and keep in communication!

Your Etsy Bill's Reminder System

We've just implemented our reminder system about paying your bill. You'll now see an alert bar just below the header and, if you have fees more than 3 months overdue, an interstitial screen letting you know.

Until the end of this year, reminders are the only consequence of having overdue fees. Starting on January 15 of 2008, accounts with fees that are 2 months overdue will not be able to list new items, and having fees 3 months overdue (or greater) will have their accounts suspended. We'll always contact anyone with overdue fees several times beforehand to make sure things are OK and see what we can work out.

Once again, until the end of this year, reminders are the only consequence of having overdue fees.

Customer Care: Updates on the Team & Billing

Our Support Team is small (though we're powerhouses). We really appreciate your patience and respect while we train our new people, and for any mentoring you can provide via Convos and the forums. Our "newbies" are doing a terrific job and we expect to get even more accomplished, especially in the areas of abuse cases, when they're fully on the saddle. Also, our copyright fairy godmother, Sarah Feingold, helps to handle copyright disputes swiftly and accurately.

As many sellers have noticed already, the August bills were not generated on the 1st. This is because we are creating a new and improved billing system and we are waiting until the new system is ready to go before billing again.

This new system will take into account many things our sellers have been asking for -- charges will match up with monthly statements regardless of refunds, you'll have the option to make partial payments, and we're looking into adding PayPal as a payment method. We hope to have it online this month. We have also been aware of an issue with some international sellers having credit card problems. We are looking into what could be causing this.
