Liane Tyrell, a.k.a. enhabiten, is interested in handmade marks. Whether they're in paintings, drawings or the stitches she makes on her unique housewares, the patterns and textures of a surface entice her. Liane specializes in pillows using vintage fabrics but has been known to make other domestic wares such as table runners, soft sculptures and embroidered wall hangings. Her rustic pillows are functional, but they also serve as tactile works of art.

Liane makes a point to surround herself with objects beautiful in their age and simplicity, from the furnishings in her fixer-up farmhouse to the fabric she uses for her creations. She believes that old things are imbued with a history and a presence that you cannot discount. Although she started enhabiten using new fabric for her goods, she quickly made the switch to vintage. When not using repurposed vintage fabrics, Liane picks environmentally-friendly materials such as organic cotton, buckwheat hulls and kapok.

Her love of simple things and vintage handmade elements makes each of her one-of-a-kind pieces personal and meaningful. From worn-with-love quilt scraps to delicate embroidery, each enhabiten piece is saturated with a history and thoughtful attention to detail that recall an austere time in the not-so-distant past.

Etsy Finds Decor: Nestled In Simplicity

This weekend’s Get the Look: Decor is inspired by the calm, modern home of Katja and Minna. Their 1959 row house apartment located in Oulu, Finland is the first home the couple purchased together, and they seem to be enjoying every minute of renovating and decorating from room to room. Katja and Minna have manged to create a serene space with a calming color palette, lots of fresh flowers, and a sweet little collection of artwork purchased from their favorite Etsy artists.

The couple also share their thoughts and ideas on art, design and home decorating in a beautiful blog known as Nestled In. The photography is gorgeous, and there is even a special section where they share their latest Etsy favorites.

How-Tuesday: Pillow With Rosette Clusters From Felt Furnishings

I haven't crafted with felt since I was little, but since picking up a copy of Anne Kyrrö Quinn's book, Felt Furnishings, I have a whole new universe of respect for the material. Anne was encouraged to revisit felt by her tutor in her final year studying Textile Design at London Metropolitan University, and she hasn't looked back since. The techniques she explores in this vibrant craft book truly transform felt into modern, eye-catching home accents.

For this week's How-Tuesday project, we're sharing her pillow with rosette clusters. The gathered felt creates a feast of color for the eye; don't the pictures just make you want to reach out and caress the nestled folds? This project comes from Anne's chapter on gathering and ruching, but her felt techniques cover the gamut, from pleating to applique. Each page of this book leaves me awestruck.

Purchase Felt Furnishings

Sometimes an idea for a new design will come to me when I'm playing around with a piece of felt in my hand. I often find that, when I'm twisting and manipulating the cloth, it starts to suggest interesting forms and shapes that could be used as decorative sculptural surface treatments.

To capture these forms, I have used the traditional techniques of gathering and ruching to create highly textural surface structures from felt and felted wool fabric. Some of these techniques are perhaps more often associated with floral-patterned chintz and lavishly deployed in extravagant soft furnishings; however, when using natural felt or heavy woolen cloth, these same techniques can create a totally different look that is modern, sculptural, and organic. To help to update these techniques even more, I have carefully balanced the flat and raised surface areas within my designs to create a distinct contrast between the textured, frilled, or ruched cloth and the areas of smooth, single-colored felt or wool fabric.

When choosing the colors to use for your gathered and ruched projects, bear in mind that tonal shades will enhance the play of light and shadow, while a contrasting color could be used for the gathered areas to further emphasize the effect of the textured detail against the flat background. Patterned fabric could also be used for the gathered detail, which would create an interesting effect, as the pattern would distort and make the colors merge.

Inspired, in part, by my diving vacations on coral reefs in the South China Sea, this design has a vital, dynamic quality, as the three-dimensional effect plays tricks with the eyes. The wonderful texture and depth of color have been created by folding small circles of bright orange cloth (either felt or felted wool) and packing them very tightly together on the base fabric in order to create a structure that seems alive, and screams out to be stroked.

Materials and Tools

Feather pillow insert, 10 x 18" (25 x 45cm)
For the pillow cover: 23 1/2 x 19" (57 x 47cm) orange felt or felted woven-wool fabric
For the folded rosettes: 20 x 18" (50 x 45cm) orange felt or felted woven-wool fabric
Matching zipper, 18" (45cm) long — optional
Matching sewing thread
Basic sewing kit
Sewing machine

1. If you wish to make a pillow back with a zipper, cut out three pieces of felt for the pillow cover — one piece measuring 11 x 19" (27 x 47cm) for the front and two pieces measuring 6 x 19" (14.5 x 47cm) and 6 1/2 x 19" (15.5 x 47cm) for the back. If you wish to make a sewn-in pillow back, cut the back panel to the same measurements as the front. To make the rosettes, cut out 60 felt circles with a 3" (7cm) diameter.

2. Pinch each felt circle in the middle, and fold the sides in to form a rosette. Hand-stitch the base of each folded rosette to hold it together.

3. Starting at one end of the front pillow panel, hand-stitch the rosettes onto the fabric, stitching neatly and securely through the base of each one.

4. Continue adding rosettes, positioning them very close together to form a dense, wide row of rosettes through the center of the pillow panel. Make sure that the row of rosettes is straight and that there is the same amount of undecorated base fabric on either side of the row.

5. Make up the pillow back and join the front and back following one of the two options below. Insert the pillow form into the finished cover.

Sewn-In Pillow Back

This is a really easy and quick way to apply a pillow backing, and it requires only a small amount of hand-sewing. The back panel of the pillow is cut in one piece, to the same size as the front panel. The front and back panels are pinned together, with right sides facing, then machine-sewn along three sides using a 1/2" (1cm) seam allowance. Once the cover has been turned right side out and the pillow form inserted, the seam is turned in along the fourth side and closed with invisible stitching. The drawback to this method is that, once sewn in, the pillow cover cannot be easily removed for washing, and would require picking out the seam and resewing.

1. Cut a piece of fabric for the back of the pillow cover to the same size as the front panel, including the same 1/2" (1cm) seam allowance (or as specified). Place the two panels with right sides together, and pin along the seam allowance on three sides, leaving the fourth side open.

2. Using matching thread and a small to medium sized straight stitch, machine-sew along the three sides to join the front and back panels together, removing the pins as you sew. Cut off the corners on the diagonal, being careful not to cut through the stitching — this will produce neater corners on the finished pillow.

3. Turn the pillow cover right side out and insert the pillow form. To close the fourth side of the cover, fold the 1/2" (1cm) seam allowance to the inside and pin the edges together.

4. Stitch the two sides together, keeping the stitches as invisible as possible. To do this, work from right to left if you are right-handed and from left to right (as shown) if you are left-handed. Knot the end of the thread, and bring the needle and thread out through one folded edge. Slip the needle through the fold of the opposite edge for about 1/4" (5mm); bring the needle out and draw the thread through. Continue to slip the needle and thread through the opposing folded edges.

Pillow Back With Zipper

Although sewing in a zipper requires a degree of technical skill, this is still not a complicated way to make up the back of a pillow cover, and it is the method that I would recommend using, as it does mean that the cover can be easily removed for cleaning. The back panel of the pillow cover is cut in two pieces, which are joined together in the middle by the zipper, running horizontally. You will need a metal or nylon closed-end zipper in a color that matches your pillow cover. The zipper should be the same length as the pillow form.

1. Cut two pieces of fabric for the back cover. Both should be the same width as the front cover (adding a 1/2" [1cm] side-seam allowance, or as specified); one should be 1 1/2" (3cm) longer than half the length of the front cover, and the other should be 1" (2cm) longer, giving a 1/2" (1cm) seam allowance along the top and bottom edges, and a 1" (2cm) and 1/2" (1cm) seam allowance along the inner zip edges respectively. With the fabric wrong side up, fold in 1" (2cm) along the inner edge of the larger back piece, and press.

2. With the zipper wrong side up, pin one side of the zipper tape along the cut edge of the fold, with 1/2" (1cm) clear at each end for the side seams. Open the zipper. Using the zipper foot, machine-sew the tape in place along the folded edge.

3. Pin the other side of the zipper tape along the inner edge of the other back piece, with the fabric right side up. Machine-sew in place.

4. Fold the edge over to form a neat fold aligning with the zipper's teeth. Machine-sew in place.

5. With the zipper half open, pin the front and back covers with right sides together. Using a 1/2" (1cm) seam allowance, machine-sew around the edges. Cut the corners (shown in step 2 opposite); turn right side out, and insert the pillow form.

Etsy Finds: Live and Let Dye

Lately I've been noticing an emerging trend that utilizes some very traditional dyeing techniques. Hand-dyed yarn and fabric are back in full swing and are being used to create everything from modern colorful dresses, t-shirts, skirts and leggings to pillows, table linens, bags and accessories. I'm especially fond of the one of a kind patterns and color combinations achieved by dyeing techniques such as batik, ikat, resist, fiber reactive, discharge, acid, natural plant dyes and shibori.

Etsy Finds Decor: Show Your True Colors

This weekend's Get the Look: Decor is inspired by the vibrant home of Italian Etsy seller, Paola Panelli. Her home features brightly colored walls, sleek modern furniture and colorful handmade and vintage accents. Each room in her apartment is filled with plants and natural light and the spectacular views from the top floor make her space an inspiring place to work.

Paola's studio is located in the attic of her apartment and features hot pink furniture and office supplies which really pop against the natural wood floor and beams. She has a hammock hanging in her studio and fluffy floor cushions that look like the perfect place to relax between long hours of sewing and designing.

Paola runs a fantastic Etsy shop known as atelierpompadour where she sells beautifully appliqued pillows, table runners and other home accessories. She also started Creativity Channel, a blog that documents her work in progress and highlights work from upcoming artists and designers.

Quit Your Day Job: enhabiten

Since childhood Liane, a.k.a. enhabiten, has been peddling her wares and exploring her creative side. Now that she's graduated from selling "junque" on the street corner to beautifully handcrafted housewares online, she's found her place in the world of Etsy. After working years in the service industry, Liane is happy to find her consistent income now coming from her Etsy sales and the ability to work in her pajamas until 11 a.m. if she wishes. Some of her best promotional tips are gaining free blog recognition and spending time in Etsy's Treasury. Keep reading to find out what makes this Gemini tick.

How did you originally get into the business of making things?
I have been making things since I was little. One of my best friends growing up, Fay, was also crafty. We made all kinds of crafts and sometimes tried to sell them. We liked to have sales when we were little, say 6-10 years old. I recall one where we sold crafts we’d made, as well as all sorts of collected stuff from around the house, including dust-covered goodies from the cellar (the beginnings of my love for both vintage and handmade). We made a big sign which said “Junque Sale." I swear we spelled it that way. Like we were admitting to selling crap, but we spelled it in a sort of fancy French way and that made up for it some.

So we’re on the street corner, just a couple of industrious 9-year-olds, holding up our sign and yelling at all the cars passing by, “Junque sale, junque sale…come and get your junque.” When along came a smart-aleck kid in a beat-up Ford Pinto or something (this was the '70s) and he rolls down his window (manually, again '70s) and yells, “WHO WANTS JUNQUE??” Well buddy, turns out lots of people want junque, so there. I continued to love making things throughout school (black corduroy knickers in 7th grade being a particularly memorable project) and ended up with a college degree in studio art.

Two side notes: If you want to hear the rest of the Fay stories which involve such topics as streaking, cod liver oil and the chief of police, just send me a convo. I also want to share that my family proudly drove an orange AMC Gremlin back in the day.

When you first started selling on Etsy, did you have dreams or goals of eventually quitting your day job?
I was so excited when I heard about Etsy in the fall of 2007 from my friend Erica. She opened her shop around the same time as me but had been an Etsy customer for a bit beforehand. I knew immediately it was a crazy good opportunity, but I really didn’t have a plan or goal at all. I’m an artist and a Gemini. I do stuff first, think second. But really, I did quit my day job — which was as a full-time coffee shop girl — because of an illness in my family. I started the Etsy shop while I was home being a full-time caretaker to a sick child. Life’s a rollercoaster. One utterly crappy thing happens and then a pretty good kismet thing happens. I give up working to understand…I just try to roll with it.

Did you do anything to prepare ahead of time?
I guess I do like to understand things before I get into them, even if I don’t have a clear plan. I read every bit of information on Etsy for sellers. For me this was important. Understanding what can be found on Etsy and also how the site works and how I could make it work for me was key. I registered my shop name with the state, got my tax ID and opened a business checking account. I recall that the Storque articles featuring seller success stories were really inspiring. Although I did not plot out my own success I do remember thinking, if they could do it, why not me?

What are the most effective ways you have promoted and marketed your Etsy business? What's your best marketing tip?
I think being featured in Treasuries really helped my shop get off the ground. I made lots of Treasuries myself and doing that helped with name recognition among other Treasury makers and folks viewing the Treasuries. I also think becoming familiar to the design-oriented bloggers out there has been helpful. Being featured on popular blogs brings me traffic from outside of Etsy. Although Flickr is not a promotional tool per se, I know I get traffic from there as well.

What have you found to be an unsuccessful promotion?
The only thing I can say here is that free blog features help me more than paid advertising. I spent some time in the past on the Etsy Forums but I don’t think that makes a difference in my business. I go there just to procrastinate, honestly. I don’t have a lot of procrastination time at the moment.

Walk us through your typical workday.

5ish a.m.: Wake up, make coffee, check Etsy. I also have a Flickr account which I like, so I check Flickr and see what my contacts have posted overnight. Living in a small town, I have found that the internet has filled a void in terms of connecting with people with the same interests. I love the long distance friends I’ve made through Etsy, Flickr and blogs. I scroll through the Etsy vintage category while I drink my coffee. I actually do this several times a day, a little OCD, and I check a couple other Etsians' Favorites (you know who you are). I can’t buy everything I favorite, but I feel like it’s an activity which is creatively satisfying and it helps improve my eye/aesthetic.
7ish a.m.: I get to work in my studio, usually still in the sweatpants and t-shirt I wore to bed. I’m trying to break myself out of this habit, but once I finish my computer routine I feel anxious to get going. It is a little icky, however, when a friend drops by at 11 a.m. and I’m still in pajamas and haven’t brushed my teeth. Anyway, from 7-noon I work on orders and make some new things to list. My 11-year-old is home schooled and he wakes up late and works with me in the studio on his own stuff. He’s currently studying Italian online and he’s making a big hand drawn map of the world. He’s really interested in geography. I have a big studio in our old house. It’s still a work in progress but I L-O-V-E it. It’s got a vintage wood stove and big windows and even a sink in it.
Noon: Get cleaned up and get dressed, eat lunch, do dishes, clean up around the house. I sometimes weed in the garden and play with the dog in the backyard to spend time outside.
2-6 p.m.: Work in the studio some more.
6-8 p.m.: Make and eat dinner and spend time with the family.
8 p.m.: Either mess around on the computer checking Flickr, blogs, Etsy or work more in the studio.
9 or 10 p.m.: Bedtime.

What do you enjoy most about not having a day job? Is there anything you miss?
Well, I have never been good at having a conventional full-time job. I have three kids ages 19, 17 and 11, and my focus for the past nineteen years has been raising them. (I got pregnant my senior year of college. And although I don’t recommend it, I also don’t regret it.) All along I’ve worked part-time in various jobs, such as child and elder care and working at a health food store and in a coffee shop. (Really, I’ve done more kinds of part-time work than it makes sense to list here.) Service-oriented jobs suit me more than the cubicle/office work. I also spent some time doing art gallery work, including corporate art.

The idea of having a profession like that was somewhat appealing in theory, but the reality left me bored and uninspired. I think my ideal job would be this: maintain my Etsy business while working on my painting (art is my background) while also working on some styling/design work and/or writing a book!

I had my astrological chart done several years ago and I was told I would be remembered for my writing and not my art. So I’m waiting for that to happen. I love to read good fiction, especially historical. I also love to look at interior design picture books. I can study the pictures in depth over and over. It’s a little weird, but it makes me happy. I didn’t answer the question, did I? The answer is I don’t miss anything, except perhaps the customers at the coffee shop. And free doughnuts.

What's the hardest part about running your own business?
The business part of it. If you saw the sky-high pile of papers I need to sort through…for shame! But I’m going to work on that. No really, I swear! This is something I need to overcome because at this point I do feel like I need to run that part well in order to succeed.

I have noticed that there are these sort of steps or even periods where things plateau and you have to have a plan and know where you want to go next in order to go there. I need to get organized and clear about what I want to do and what my ultimate goal is. I like to go into the studio and la la la…just do whatever my whims tell me to do. But I see definite areas where I can improve my shop appearance and products and I have to focus and get those things done. It might be nice to have someone else be in charge of this aspect of the business, but have I mentioned that I’m also a little bit controlling? So that might pose a problem.

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give yourself? What advice would you give someone else?
I believe that the most critical thing for people making a craft is to realize that you have to have something special people want. Photos, a business plan, and marketing skills are all important, but without that special something, it won’t fly. I spend a lot of time on Etsy and working in my studio. When I don’t, it shows. And, don’t underestimate the power of just showing up and putting in the time to improve what you make. My things have changed and been refined lots over the past year.

What goals do you wish to accomplish in the coming year for your Etsy business?
Well, in the next couple months I plan to create a more consistent look for my photos. I also want to focus in on a few different categories of products. I’m really loving vintage fabric, particularly barkcloth, and especially in combination with patterned wool on the back. And I want to expand my pillows made with these fabrics, but make them more consistent in terms of look and size. I also want to expand the line of embroidered word pillows and maintain the cross pillows, but I have some tweaking I want to do to that “line." At the same time, I want to keep experimenting. I’m working on some reupholstery projects and also clothing made with vintage fabric. It’s a juggling act. Did I already say I’m a Gemini?

Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I adore Etsy. B.E. (before Etsy) I felt a little lost in the wilderness of life and I wondered, “Where do I fit in?” Like that scene in Zoolander where Derek is talking to his really really good-looking reflection in the street puddle and he asks himself, “Who am I?” But seriously, Etsy has allowed me to make money while being my creative self. It allows me a really flexible schedule and I feel like I get out of it what I put in. It’s incredibly easy to use and there is next to no financial risk. So thank you, Etsy. For reals. If you were a really really good looking boy, I’d totally smooch you. Or even a half-way decent looking boy driving an orange AMC Gremlin. Just brush your teeth first.

Susan's home features a lovely mix of handmade and vintage furniture and accessories that give her house near the coast a comforting cottage feel. Quit Your Day Job: diffractionfiber

Beth of DiffractionFiber has had the creative bug and an entrepreneurial spirit since day one. After getting locked into an administrative assistant job that wasn't serving her creative passion or degree in theater, Beth drew up a plan with clear steps laid out in order to quit her day job and become her own boss. Keep reading to find out where she gets her best business advice and why she thinks she can work a much longer day now that there's no alarm clock to wake her up!

How did you originally get into the business of making things?
Well, funnily enough, I’ve always tried to be in the “business of making things.” I grew up with wonderfully supportive parents — a mom who crafts and a dad who has always run his own businesses. I suppose it was inevitable for me to want to combine the two.

When I was tiny, probably around five, my mom would go to craft shows to sell her wares. She'd set me up with a tiny little table of my own, and I’d sell these itty bitty wreaths with tiny bears glued to them. Then when I was in elementary school, being the entrepreneur I am, I approached a consignment shop and worked out an arrangement to rent (free of charge, mind you) a shelf in the shop in exchange for handing out flyers around town. I made all sorts of choker necklaces and little origami-like creations. I think I sold two things in the couple of months I had a shelf there. I was a precocious little thing!

More recently my artwork became a means to escape my day job as an administrative assistant for a bank. Instead I could do something I loved that fulfilled me creatively and that I was passionate about. I have a degree in theater, which I realized wasn’t for me soon after entering the professional world (far too many conflicting personalities and far too little control over your end product).

So there I was, stuck in this day job, all the while thinking there has to be something better out there for me. I rekindled my love of knitting initially as a creative outlet, which in turn led me to return to photography and then to sewing.

When you first started selling on Etsy, did you have dreams or goals of eventually quitting your day job?
Absolutely! From day one. I was originally planning on selling knitwear, but realized I’d never be able to produce a product fast enough for it to be a sustainable business. I soon opened my first shop, Diffraction, which combined my original photography into jewelry. Diffraction was a great first step, but even with a unique jewelry line you are still competing against so many talented designers in a flooded market. DiffractionFiber was created as a sister site, almost as a diversion. I really had no idea it would take off as it has. I found myself sewing pieces and didn’t want to drown in pillows around our home, so I listed them in the second shop to keep Diffraction true to its original intent and brand.

Did you do anything to prepare ahead of time?
I am an expert list maker (sure, I usually lose most of my lists, but I am an expert at making them!), and I can be practical to a fault. So first off, I figured out how much money I’d have to make each month to eventually match what I was making at my day job. It gave me something tangible to attain: not just to increase sales, but by how much. I was able to plan how much of my business I thought would be revenue from Etsy, from craft shows and from wholesale. I decided when my revenue was equal to that of my day job for three months I’d put in my two weeks notice and make my long-held dream of entrepreneurship a reality.

I found independent health insurance, which is incredibly important to me. I squared away my business with all the proper licensing with the state and IRS. And I set up all the wholesale accounts I’d need for buying my supplies in bulk. I read up on marketing, on creating a business plan, and I talked to SCORE counselors (which is an invaluable resource for business professionals). I’m addicted to the Modish Biz Tips blog. I also watch the TED conferences, which provide practical, thought-provoking marketing advice and inspiration. I find that the more I read and learn, the more confident I am about my business, about talking about it in a professional way, and on making it a success. But like I said, I’m infinitely practical at times.

What are the most effective ways you have promoted and marketed your Etsy business? What's your best marketing tip?
By far my greatest success has stemmed from creating a unique product, first and foremost. If you don’t have that, no amount of marketing will make you a success. If you can’t point to a reason for someone to buy your product over all the others out there, you are lost in a sea of competition. I’m not saying you need to reinvent the wheel, but there needs to be some component of your product, of you, of your packaging or service, that they can’t get elsewhere.

That said, with my unique widget in hand, I started approaching blogs. And not just “Hey, check out my shop," but an authentic correspondence about one product or series. I wrote personal emails to one blogger at a time, no copy and pasting! I certainly owe bloggers for my success!

What have you found to be an unsuccessful promotion?
Ironically enough, my own blog! Maybe more as an outlet than anything at this point. Also, Project Wonderful hasn’t been very effective for me, and that 10 cents here and there adds up. I try to think about what works on me as a consumer, what are the ads or promotions that get me to buy or to even perk up my ears at a product...and side bar advertising isn’t it. My suggestion is to turn the table and think about how you buy.

Walk us through your typical workday.

I typically wake up around 8 a.m.: no alarm clock for this girl!
I check my email first thing in the morning, answer any convos and check for sales.
I spend a bit of time in the forums, reading blogs and contacting blogs while eating breakfast.
Typically I’ll get started on sewing mid-morning.
I try to carve out a portion of the day for working on a new product or idea that’s been floating around my head.
After lunch I have the best light in my living room to photograph anything I want to list that day.
And really, it’s just a lot of sewing and cutting throughout the day.
My wonderful husband comes home around 6 p.m. I love to cook, so I make dinner for the two of us.
In the evenings, I package up any orders that are to go out the next day and schedule the pick up through USPS.

What do you enjoy most about not having a day job? Is there anything you miss?
Working on my own schedule! It is amazing how much more energy I have during the day not having to wake up to an alarm clock! At my day job I had very little work to do throughout the day, and yet by the end of it I’d be exhausted. Now, I work 12 hours a day and yeah, I’m tired, but I feel good! I feel a sense of accomplishment. (Not to mention the very odd personalities and grumpy people I worked with.) I certainly don’t miss that! Just the human interaction is missed. I find myself babbling as soon as my husband gets home from work about who knows what.

What's the hardest part about running your own business?
The hardest part for me is keeping things in perspective: knowing that’s it's okay that I didn’t make a sale today, because for the month I’m on track for my goals. I tend to get sales in rushes, and it’s in those lag times that self-doubt can creep in.

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give yourself? What advice would you give someone else?
Just to know from the beginning that it really is possible! And sure, it’s going to be hard, but it’s also going to be rewarding. For anyone considering it, I’d say go for it! Be smart about it, especially in this economy, but it really is achievable if you have a plan and set goals for yourself. There is a wealth of information on the internet, so use it!

What goals do you wish to accomplish in the coming year for your Etsy business?
I’d like to expand my wholesale accounts, and, of course, create all of the ideas I have buzzing around in my brain! Many more pillows, personal accessories and some wearable creations will soon be appearing! I’m already looking towards my very first holiday season with DiffractionFiber, which I’m sure will be a whirlwind!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Just a big ol’ kiss on the lips to Etsy. There is no way I could be where I am without it. Etsy is such a unique platform for creating your own success! So thank you thank you thank you!

Handmade Weddings: Five Sisters = One Amazing Day

Ann Marie Popko, a.k.a. superduper and cocktailparty, lives in the French Quarter of New Orleans and has been designing accessories for almost 20 years. Her professional creative life includes hair accessories and hats, Mardi Gras costumes, nature photography, pecan cookery and newsletter writing. In this installment of Handmade Weddings, Ann Marie and her family share their story of putting their creative brains together for their sister's big day.

There are five sisters in my family. Growing up, our parents always encouraged creativity, and as adults living in the age of Etsy, the Popko family operates seven Etsy shops! When our little sister Crystal announced that she was going to get married, we all pulled out our specialties (and learned a few new ones) to grant her wishes in style.

The Shower

Crystal’s creative mastermind jumped into gear as soon as her boyfriend John proposed. She is incredibly talented; she studied sculpture at her university and has a thriving Etsy shop, popko, where she sells her butterfly wing and fused glass jewelry. It was no surprise that she would design her own wedding, or that she would enlist her uniquely creative family to carry out her vision.

The bride-to-be chose a delicious pink and orange color scheme, so our crafty Mom, a.k.a. sewsoft, whipped up 40 cheerful cotton napkins and cooked all of the food for the shower. I made my Love at First Bite sweet and spicy pecans, put them in white organza bags for all of our guests, and designed custom photo hang tags to make them extra special.

The Ceremony

The August wedding was held in an historic 1820’s building on top of a mountain in western Massachusetts. The stunning panoramic view of the Connecticut River Valley was glazed with sun and sparkled all around with bright blue skies. John painted plenty of signs to make sure all of the guests found their way up and down the winding mountain trail.

The ring bearer was our year-old nephew Julian, and his job was to carry token rings up the aisle in a nest created by our sister, April (his mommy and Crystal’s maid-of-honor). She decorated a straw nest with marabou feathers, ivy, birds and miniature eggs.

April also used leather, buttons and embroidered ribbon to create tiny lederhosen suspenders for Julian to wear — a nod to our eastern European heritage.

I designed the bride’s hair accessory, the “Velvet Kiss,” made with peach velvet millinery leaves, antique silver sequins and a tiny spray of ostrich feathers. It was made to highlight the peach details in her sandy-metallic wedding dress. The groom and his groomsmen wore boutonnieres I made to coordinate with Crystal’s hair accessory. The great part about all of these accessories is that they are everlasting mementos of a special day, unlike fresh flowers which usually don’t make it past the conga line!

The wedding bands were designed and created by our sister Monique, a.k.a. gurlygirl, using the lost wax method. She hand-carved the rings out of wax, cast them in white gold and set the stones. (In a nutshell…she’s a professional metalsmith and it’s not as easy as it looks!) Since John spends lots of time around trees as a leader of adventure and sports trips, Monique carved a leaf texture into his ring. Crystal was inspired by a 50-cent thrift shop ring and asked Monique to recreate it as a continuous golden circle of hearts and diamonds.

The Reception

As guests walked into the reception (a rustic red barn a few miles down from the mountain ceremony), they knew right away that this was a handmade wedding. It was my job to grow flower boxes full of wheat grass to use as bases for the seating designations. I had never grown wheat grass before, but when the bride asks, one must deliver! Big sis Monique hand-wrote each guest’s name on a card and attached them to twigs we had gathered from the yard, and then we stuck the twigs in the grass. It was a fresh and lovely welcome to the festivities and it wasn’t very expensive to create.
Guests were asked to write well-wishes and advice for the newlyweds on one of 100 yellow cardstock birds (lovingly hand cut by our mom and sister April), and hang them on a tabletop wish Ttee. Also at the entrance was a wonderful clothesline display of images featuring Crystal and John throughout their six years together leading up to their wedding.

The maid-of-honor designed the cake toppers. She gave Crystal’s lovebird a veil (I guess because the bride didn’t wear one herself!) and she gave John’s a flotation vest and a paddle (he's an avid kayaker). The dinner tables were decorated in the pink and orange color scheme, and we created everything on the tables: hand-etched glass vases with rocks picked from our beach in Cape Cod, leaf-shaped table numbers, menu cards, flower arrangements, centerpiece plates. We were a hardworking and faithful crew!

Crystal and John gave their 100 wedding guests favors from the heart. They made fresh strawberry jam and mango-ginger waffle syrup. (Can you believe that even the fruit colors are on theme?) Middle sister Noel hosted a wrapping party at her house, where we poured some wine and went to town with cellophane, ribbon and hang tags designed by Crystal. (Note the rounded corners on each tag, done by us with a special craft punch.) Making all of these things for our sister’s wedding day was an extra special honor. If we could do it all over again, I think we would…there are still two more single sisters in the family!

Handmade Weddings: It Takes a Village to Craft a Handmade Wedding

Jimmy and I got married at our alma mater in Berkeley, California, in late January 2008. I cherish that day and the months leading up to it — not only because I got to marry my superstar sweetheart husband, but for a few other reasons as well. The first? Our wedding was an amazing and unforgettable collaboration of family and friends, which made it that much more special. Second, I really got to thinking that maybe the world of handmade could be the life — and a living — for me!

My last freelance gig as a web project manager ended in October 2007, and I spent the next three months plotting for what I came to see as the uber craft project challenge of a lifetime. Given free reign by Jimmy, I set out to DIY it all: from invites to thank you cards, bouquets to centerpieces, favors to photo booth...to wedding gown and veil!

Little did my then-fiance realize what this would mean for him: hours of paper punching, sticker adhering, flower assembling and other crafty tasks ahead. Soon I recruited even more unwitting victims — friends and family — to help along the way as well. No one was safe from crafty endeavors, for as I learned, it takes a village to craft a handmade wedding.

About 25 projects and minus ten pounds later (wedding planning is a great method for rapid weight loss), we had our very own DIY wedding! Bridesmaid Clara contributed the tastiest his-and-hers batches of homemade green tea (his) and double-chocolate (hers) cupcakes, topped with our initials.

Big sister/matron-of-honor Christine and brother-in-law Don grew our delightful wheatgrass centerpieces, displayed in hand-stained wooden boxes and bringing bright happy splashes of green throughout our UC Berkeley Faculty Club venue.

And the groom's family labored over intricately designed centerpieces made of orchids and bamboo. These were one of the main elements of our wedding day, chosen for their symbolism of longevity, strength and grace.

Bridesmaid Jenn masterminded our slideshow, which she transformed from the traditional photo-by-photo setup and turned into a real deal stop-motion animation film!

Something that still comes up in conversation with friends is our homemade lip balm wedding favors. This was one of my favorite projects, as Jimmy and I each concocted our own recipes (mine was Hot Chocolate Mint and his was Cool Cucumber Melon) and gave each guest a packaged tube of creamy lip balm marked "Please ask about our free lifetime refills." (Make your own with this how-to!)

We couldn't do it without a photo booth, so we rigged our own setup with PVC pipes, some free software, a borrowed DSLR camera and a remote control. We loved how creative our guests got with this, and we came home with boatloads of memorable shots.

Then there was the gown, which was by far the biggest and most stressful project. I sketched out a look based off an assortment of gowns from ripped-out magazine pages and online bridal sites, then found an out-of-print sewing pattern that somewhat resembled my design. I was having the hardest time fitting it on myself, so Mom came up from Los Angeles and made me a wacky replica of myself via a duct tape dressform. (Here's a how-to from the folks at Taunton publishers.) I spent an entire three months on my gown, veil and wrap, and ultimately considered it a relief and a success when nothing fell apart as I walked down the aisle or as Jimmy flung the veil from my face.

Once we danced the Hustle for our first dance (which you can see a part of in this mini-commercial made by our dance instructors), we costume-changed into our traditional garb to round out the night: Jimmy in his traditional Filipino barong tagalog and me in my Taiwanese chi pao. Luckily Mom talked me out of making my own chi pao, and I found the perfect one online instead.

What are the lessons I learned from having a DIY wedding? One thing I'd say is that even if you CAN make it yourself, that doesn't mean you should! In retrospect, there were plenty of projects I probably should have outsourced or de-prioritized. I can't say I regretted any of them, but I probably could have saved myself a few moments of panic had I turned elsewhere — like all of the talented sellers on Etsy! — for them.

And two of the best pieces of advice I got? Not everything's going to turn out the way it's supposed to on your wedding day. When that happens, don't even think about it! This is just one day in a lifetime of days ahead...and no one else is going to notice anyway. Also, accept help from other people! Don't try to do everything on your own.

In the end, it was our perfect wedding. Handmade or not, we were together and surrounded by loving family and friends in a beautiful venue, and were even blessed with a bright sunny day in the heart of an otherwise rainy winter month. We couldn't have been happier. And that's our story!

Etsy Finds Decor: Flea Market Fancy with SF Girl by Bay

This weekend's Get the Look: Decor is inspired by the San Francisco, California apartment of Victoria Smith. She runs sfgirlbybay, an amazing design blog focused on home décor. She also has a very successful Etsy shop where she sells hand silk-screened "Keep Calm, Carry On" posters, which have become one of the hottest trends of the season.

Victoria describes her decorating style as “eclectic, bohemian modern, with a mixture of lots of vintage pieces and mid-century modern pieces from all different eras." Her home includes a well-balanced mixture of flea market and Craigslist finds with furniture and accessories purchased from a few modern contemporary design stores (as well as Etsy!). Victoria's favorite aspects of her apartment include the wood-burning, copper-faced fireplace, the tall ceilings and the big bay windows which allow in a ton of natural sunlight.

Victoria credits much of her inspiration to her creative group of friends and colleagues. "I just find artistic, creatively talented people fascinating and inspiring to be around. Most of my friends and colleagues are photographers, art buyers, painters, fashion designers, writers, or work in a creative field. I just get excited seeing what they're up to and feed off their creativity. I also get inspired by photos I find on flickr of great interior stylists' and photographers' work, as well as from design magazines and books, and film."

This weekend's Get the Look: Decor is inspired by the Nashville, Tennessee home of Allison Marusic. She spends many weekends shopping at flea markets and thrift shops and is an avid collector of everyday things that tell a story or show signs of their past. This weekend's Get the Look: Decor is inspired by the British Columbia home of Etsy seller April of WhiteApple. She shares an apartment in an Arts and Crafts era building with her boyfriend Shane. April says her decorating style is inspired by everything around her, especially the colors of the West Coast, mossy trees, Wes Anderson, Ukiyo-e, Charles Voysey, the Victorians and the Mods.

The historical elements within their home, as well as their Victorian style furniture, remind me of weekend trips to my grandmother's house — and I mean that in a very good way! Their home has managed to capture a cozy, romantic old fashioned feeling, with just a hint of modern charm.

This weekend's Get the Look: Decor is inspired by the amazing Philadelphia, PA loft of Shauna and Stephen from somethingshidinghere. Their enormous apartment (over 2700 square feet!) is filled with collections of vintage treasures, artwork and weekend DIY projects. The duo calculates good craftsmanship and day-to-day functionality into every aspect of the design.

Etsy Finds Decor: Into the Woods with Forestbound

This weekend's Get the Look: Decor is inspired by the rustic Massachusetts home of Etsy seller Alice Saunders of ForestBound. She explains her distinctive decorating style as "very similar to my crafting aesthetic – traditionally inspired and rustic, but with modern sensibilities."

Alice shops almost exclusively at flea markets, barn sales and antique shops. She says, "I don’t like to buy new items, especially for decorating my space. I’d rather reuse unique pieces that I happen to stumble across. The table that I do all my sewing on for ForestBound is actually an old door that my roommate and I found behind a building a few months ago – I just attached some old table stands that I found at a flea market and it become a sturdy work table! But when I’m looking for art to hang on the walls I always turn to Etsy or other similar sites..."

Alice is inspired by "rustic, woodsy cabins and everything that goes with them – inside and out, but also by people who build their own homes from completely found materials, by the incredible work of J. Etsy Finds Decor: Small on Space, Big on Style

This weekend's Get the Look: Decor is inspired by the Brooklyn, NY apartment of DIYer and home owner, Meredith. Her bright, sun filled 600 square foot co-op feels much larger than its true size due to the high ceilings, bright color palette and accent pieces throughout her home. I'm especially excited about Meredith's house tour since she lives in my neighborhood and her apartment is almost the exact layout of my own. Fresh Shops: commondecency

I recently spotted a new quirky shop on the scene. The seller in question? None other than pillow, tote bag and t-shirt maker commondecency. Their unique combination of antique imagery and contemporary forms is pretty captivating! Here's a little interview we did with this Fresh Shop.

Can you tell us a little about the people behind commondecency?
Common Decency is a collaboration between my husband Daniel and myself. I have been making things to sell at consignment and retail shops off and on over the past 12 years. I started out sewing clothing, a skill I picked up from watching mom. I also took a couple classes in screen printing at art school, which taught a very D.I.Y. approach to the process. This experience helped me figure out how to build all our own screen making and printing equipment, so we were eventually able to create a low cost printing studio in our garage.

We both share design duties, although I have to give Daniel the credit for the sort of "psychedelic Victorian" imagery we used on our John and Mary pillows (my two personal favorites from the shop). He has been experimenting with hand-manipulating old engravings for a few years now (there is a huge old suitcase full of these experiments in our living room!). I went through his ideas and picked out the John and Mary images, figuring they were simple yet unique enough to look great on a set of pillows, and those ended up becoming the inspiration for our shop.

What inspires you as a creative person?
In general, it is the desire to make everyday objects more interesting. With this particular venture, the inspiration comes from wanting to highlight beautiful objects and everyday imagery of the past, but put our own spin on it where we can. We both love the graphic style of the Victorian period, a combination of very skilled and reserved engravings with kind of crazy, no rules fonts and layouts. Because our culture recycles through imagery so quickly, a lot of beauty in these old drawings, faces, objects get buried under that pile. We hope to elaborate on this aesthetic as we add new designs to the shop.

How do you like Etsy so far? What are your favorite features of the site?
We both love Etsy!! I can't say I will ever miss the days of having to wander around looking for shops to sell my designs. Etsy allows us to experiment more, be more creative, and more easily change ideas that don't work well.

As far as features, Pounce is pretty addictive. I also like Shop Local to check out what other artists in our area are up to.

Quit Your Day Job: KatrinaKaye

Trina and Andy are a husband and wife team working together to run their full time Etsy business, katrinakaye, as well as raise their daughter Sienna. After relocating to Amsterdam, Trina just couldn't find it in herself to go back to a "proper" job, as she calls it, and just knew deep down she wanted to be at home making a living making things. Her timing couldn't have been better, with the popularity of the online craft scene on the rise. After Andy noticed her climbing success, he too was able to Quit His Day Job to help Trina run the business full time. What they enjoy most in life is being able to be at home with their daughter. They're teaching her first hand that that being conventional and doing what you are told is not always necessary; that you can live your dream.

When you first started selling on Etsy, did you have dreams or goals of making a living on Etsy?
Absolutely! For me it was a case of refusing to get a new job after quitting the last one to come to Amsterdam. I am a graphic designer by trade, but was really unhappy to sit behind a computer all day and always knew that I wanted to ‘make stuff’ for a living instead, but wasn’t sure how to do it.

Then Andy got offered a job in Amsterdam and we moved. When we got here, Andy told me every day to get a job, but I just couldn’t bring myself to go around with my portfolio. I just wanted to be at home making stuff. Someone suggested I try selling my things on the market here, and I got a market license and was making enough to not always ask Andy for money… I still considered it a hobby really, and Andy was still nagging me to get a ‘proper’ job.

This was around the time Craftster started up, and that was a huge inspiration. It was also where I found Etsy. I joined in January 2006, and it went really well! Pretty soon I was on the good old ‘Top Seller’ list, people blogged about me, I got wholesale requests from all over the world… It was like I had opened the door to our future!

How long were you selling on Etsy before your husband quit his day job?
I had been half jokingly talking to Andy about joining my business for months, but he thought I was crazy and couldn’t get used to the idea of not having a stable and reliable income. I was convinced that with our doubled effort, my enthusiasm and his business skills, we could make it work and be able to live off it. Before Etsy, I really had no proof of how this was going to happen, but when he saw how well I was doing on here he started taking me more seriously. All of a sudden it wasn’t just a hobby: I was making almost the same as him. Within three months he had left his job and we were in business together.

Did you do anything to prepare ahead of time?
It was all a bit crazy, really. We had a mortgage to pay, we had just found out I was pregnant, he had no idea how to work a sewing machine and we had no business plan in place. I wouldn’t say we were naive though, just optimistic! I was probably riding on the ‘what the bleep do we know’-wave too… Create your own reality and all that. There was a lot of manifesting going on! :D We did have some savings, and that helped a lot. (Especially since I basically slept my way through the first three months of the pregnancy and Andy was thrown in at the deep end.)

He learned to sew, he took over the day to day stuff, he answered conversations and he put in place a lot of structure and efficiency that I had not bothered with and made everything more business-like. He took us to the next level, something I wouldn’t have managed to do without him. I probably wouldn’t suggest that everyone do it the somewhat Utopian way we did, but it worked for us, luckily. I do truly believe that if you set your mind to something and follow your heart you can’t go wrong.

What are the most effective ways you have promoted and marketed your Etsy business? What's your best marketing tip?
As we work on the market here in Amsterdam, we meet a huge amount of people every week. Most of them are tourists from all over the world. We tell almost every single one of them about Etsy. In the beginning, no one had heard about it, but now we meet loads of people who have their own shops, are addicted to buying on Etsy or just think it’s amazing. We don’t have to spell it to everyone anymore… (it’s like Betsy without the B!) That’s it, really. We haven’t really done any proper advertising. It’s all been word of mouth, I suppose. We have had a few big blogs write about us and done an interview online. We’ve been featured in a few magazines and there are more coming up soon, which is cool. I’ve been thinking about advertising on blogs lately and might give that a try. Advertising is very much one of the things on our to-do list. Being on the front page is definitely a good way of ‘advertising’… We were on there last night and I just sat there and refreshed the page over and over again and watched the views going through the roof! So exhilarating!

What have you found to be unsuccessful promotion?
We joined the ‘street market’ a while back — Poppytalk Handmade — which I was really excited about, but I don’t think we got a single sale as a result of it. It seems to be good for other people though, and I personally love Poppytalk. (see our Etsy blog posts with Poppytalk)

Would you walk us through what a typical workday might entail?
They’re all very different, but these are the kind of things we do…

Around 7 am we get rudely awoken by the little one…
We check Etsy, the newspaper headlines and emails and then we have some coffee and breakfast.
Since Sienna was born, we’ve had to abandon our studio, which is a bit too far away to go to during naps… As a result we work from home. Hopefully we’ll be able to move back there soon or get a bigger house with an adjacent studio…
We plan our day and talk about who should do what and one of us might take Sienna and go to the park if the other one needs some ‘office time’. It’s usually Andy taking her out and me working frantically whilst they’re out. He works on his laptop as much as he can whilst out. He also works on his laptop in between sales while at the market on the weekends.
We work conveyor belt style to keep things tidy more than anything else. One day we’ll be sewing, one day gluing, one day admin and once in a while one day lounging around not really getting much done but enjoying life…
Andy does most of the dealing with suppliers and buyers, the paperwork, the money bit and other serious stuff, whilst I do the designing and making and bossing around... We overlap a lot when we have to, but we found that it’s what suits us best.
The computer is on 24 hours a day and there’s always something to do on it. We’ve got a new 24 inch screen iMac, which is handy for having one window showing Teletubbies and one next to it with Etsy.
It’s sometimes difficult to stick to schedules with Turbo Baby around, so we try to have weekly aims instead. It makes for less disappointment on an ineffective day.

Hmm, I’m finding it really hard to describe the work we do for some reason. I think it might be because most of it doesn’t feel like work and it blurs into normal ‘home life’. I do know that it doesn’t really ever stop and even when Andy and I go out for a rare meal alone together we always end up talking about the business because we enjoy it so much!

What do you enjoy most about not having a day job? Is there anything you miss?
I enjoy:
-having no one telling me what time I have to be where every day and having to stay there until they say it’s ok for me to go home.
-not being told what to do with my life.
-not having to spend my day with people I haven’t chosen to be friends with, but having to sit next to for most of the waking hours of the day.
-the feeling of choice and control and the knowledge that I achieved what I always dreamed of.
-being able to go and see my family in Norway for two weeks at the time without worrying about how many holiday days I’m using.

Andy enjoys:
-the complete freedom to map out his day and to shape it depending on his mood and what feels right.
-having siestas in the afternoon when he wants (he sometimes used to have naps in the men’s room in his last job…)
-that business and pleasure rolls into one.
-the fact that daydreaming that used to be considered as time wasting is now more of a necessary creative process.
-that the drive and the focus is always there.
-that no day is ever the same.
-that he’s teaching himself new skills everyday.
-that making mistakes is a way of developing himself now and not seen as a failure.

The single-most amazing thing we both enjoy is that Sienna gets to grow up, with not just one stay at home parent but TWO! She doesn't need to be rushed to daycare in the morning by tired and stressed out parents that come and pick her up again 8-9 hours later to take her home, give her dinner and a bath and then to bed. Instead she gets to hang out with us every day. Work is never more important than her. We can choose to go to the park and have a picnic and feed the ducks, have a play and a swim instead of working if the sun is shining! She also gets to see first hand that believing in yourself works. That being conventional and doing what you are told is not always necessary... That you can live your dream. I feel so fortunate and so happy for Sienna and to think that all this is largely thanks to Etsy is totally mind blowing. It has changed my life, changed Andy's life and provided our daughter with two very present and happy parents that are always there for her.

Andy misses the lunch breaks and the occasional after work drink, as he doesn’t have much time for them now! :D

What advice would you give someone else thinking about taking the plunge to sell full time on Etsy?
Do it if your heart is truly in it! If you’re not 100% sure and if you’re really only doing it because you hate you day job, then change your day job instead. Don’t doubt yourself. You need to believe that it is going to work and that you are never going for another interview again! Burn you CV as a symbolic ritual. Just do it… don’t wait for someone to tell you that it’s ok. Most people will tell you you’re insane, but that’s because they're: A. Not creative and thus have no understanding of the force that drives you. B. Not creative and can’t see beyond the corporate world. C. Not creative and secretly jealous of your skills.

Take yourself seriously! When people ask you what you do, look them straight in the eye tell them you’re a designer and you’ve got your own successful online company. Then be vague and mysterious and make it sound absolutely fabulous… Pretty soon you start believing your own hype and that’s a good thing! Be prepared to work hard… Having your own business is not like an office job where your workday is over when you leave the office. It’s all consuming at times. Keep all your receipts. Get an accountant. They’re worth the money.

What goals do you wish to accomplish in the coming year?
We want to broaden our range of products, step it up a notch, surprise people and have fun!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Don’t be afraid to make adjustments along the way. My design tutor once said to me: ‘kill your darlings!’ It’s a writer’s term, really, but I think it applies to all creative work. It reminds me that although I might love something, other people might not, and that keeps me focused on what I’m trying to achieve. I know I said earlier that if you follow your heart you’ll be fine, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore the signs. If your products aren’t selling, don’t think of it as a failure: think of it as a possibility to develop. Take a look around at what is selling and why. Perhaps you’ll find ways of improving your own products. It is not ‘selling out’ to make changes — it is good business sense.

Crafting full time might sound pink and fluffy, but if you’re going to survive as a business you have to be willing to compromise and be commercial, too. After all, it’s the money you make that will buy your new materials to keep making things that will sell and make you more money so you can pay your mortgage!

EtsyFinds: Quilted Amazingness from JCasa

It's no secret that I've been a fan of JCasa for quite some time now. She has an amazingly quaint blog and churns out the sweetest quilted amazingness and stoneware you could ever imagine.

As a former-rocker-turned-mother-of-two, she updates her shop on a regular basis and has consistently beautiful photos of her work. Absolutely everything she makes would be a really great gift for someone I know, from her housewares to the things she makes for little people, it's all so perfectly handmade and heart-filled.

Etsy Find: Vanessa Recommends Buying Handmade from Reiter8

Night before last, I was trolling Etsy for that something special for my little sister. She's a down-to-earth young lady, environmentally-minded, and remarkably, she has sailed around the world on sailboats while working for a semester at sea program. Now she's pretty much landlocked and still yearning for those open vistas and the salt air. What is the perfect holiday gift for an ocean lover?

Well, I sure found it: a bag from reiter8. reiter8 makes bags and pillows from recycled sails from sailboats. The bag has clean lines and subtle detailing, with lots of pockets on its organic fabric-lined inside. Even her cardboard hang-tags are eco-friendly: they're made out of upcycled cereal boxes. I snapped one up and made good on my Buy Handmade Pledge. Very pleased with myself, I sat back from my computer and started the wait for the shipment to arrive by mail.

BUT... yesterday, while working away at the Etsy Labs, I had a visitor! Katherine aka reiter8 showed up in person with my purchase. Imagine my surprise! When I'd clicked the buy button the night before, I hadn't realized that she is based in Brooklyn, just a neighborhood away. It was one of those great moments where Etsy popped into 3D. It was so fun to meet her in person and hear a bit about her process and her experience on Etsy. She told us about how she gets people to donate their used sails in exchange for a free bag. Apparently, hardcore racing sailboats only use a sail for about 100 hours of sail time and then, like racecars with their tires, they have to swap out the sails. Katherine's apartment is completely filled up with sails, and as she said with a wry smile, "It's kinda an issue with the family!"
