How-Tuesday: Snowflake Gift Wrap with the NewNew Team

We published this how-to last year but we're bring it back up for your holiday preparations!

Etsy How-Tuesday presents Kari aka ikyoto and Stella aka lookcloselypress of The {NewNew} York Team. Today we're going to learn how to screenprint our own snowflake gift wrap for the holidays. Kari and Stella remind us that recycling paper bags is a great source for materials for this kind of project.

Materials Needed:

Silk Screen
Squeegee
Paper Bags / Junk Mail / Card Stock
Scissors
Ink Spreader / Spatula / Stirring Stick
Iron
Ironing Board
A flat protected surface (table with construction paper works just fine)

Steps for Making Screenprinted Gift Wrap:

Cut up your bags until they lay flat.
Iron the bags with the iron on a cotton setting with some steam.
Lay one bag on a flat protected surface (you can tape the edges down if you like).
- Place the screen over the bag.
- Have a friend hold the screen firmly in place.
- Use an ink spreader, spatula, or stirring stick to put some ink evenly along one edge of the screen.
- Using a squeegee firmly press down and pull the ink across the design holding the squeegee at a 45º angle.
- Carefully lift the screen, while holding the paper down to separate the two.
- Repeat swiftly until you notice the ink starting to gum in the screen at which point: rinse!

Wednesday Workshop Wrap-Up: Gift Certificates in Your Shop

Etsy does not offer site-wide gift cards, but individual sellers may provide gift certificate listings that shoppers can use in that store only. Check out Holiday How-To: Offering Services for more great tips on providing those special extra touches for your holiday shoppers.

As we quickly approach shipping cut-offs to deliver gift purchases in time for the holidays, some last-minute shoppers may appreciate the convenience of a gift certificate from your Etsy shop. We have some guidelines and tips for sellers who wish to offer gift certificates.

First and foremost, you must research and abide by any applicable local laws governing gift certificates.* This is clearly stated in the DOs & DON'Ts of Etsy, as detailed below:

Gift certificates are governed by local laws; it is the seller's responsibility to determine if they are in compliance. If you list a gift certificate on Etsy, you are responsible for this compliance.
You must include this sentence in the item listing: "This Gift Certificate is valid only in my Etsy shop, and it is only redeemable here."

If you are a seller in the USA, you may be interested in The Consumer's Union for a brief overview gift certificate laws. (This website and this article are for informative purposes only, and should not be considered legal advice.) Please refer to the laws of your state and/or country for more accurate, detailed and up-to-date information. You may wish to consult an attorney for specific questions.

When you list your gift certificate on Etsy, be sure you follow all of Etsy's rules for item listings. Here are some specific things to keep in mind:

Your listing must be for a set price; this should be the full value of the gift certificate.
Your listing must be an actual, tangible item for purchase. This could be a traditional, formal paper certificate, notecard, Moo card or something the recipient might want to hang onto a little longer, like a sticker, coaster, patch or badge. A digital file, like a .pdf, may also be acceptable.
Your listing description should be accurate and detailed. Provide all the details and terms for using the gift certificate so shoppers know exactly what they are purchasing (see below).
Be clear in your description that this gift certificate is only redeemable in the Etsy shop from which is it purchased.

Be sure to include pertinent information on your physical gift certificate and in your item listing, even if it seems obvious to you:

the name of your shop
your shop's unique web address on Etsy (for example: username.etsy.com)
the words "gift certificate"
the value of the gift certificate
a unique secret code, which the redeemer of the gift certificate will be instructed to type into the Message to Seller section when checking out (do not include this in your item listing!)
clear instructions on how to redeem the gift certificate (for example: "Go to my Etsy shop, and select the items you would like to buy with this fine gift certificate. Click the green Checkout button. In the Message to Seller section, please type in the code. I will send you a Convo to confirm your order. Thanks!")

Be organized and keep track of the code of every gift certificate that is purchased and redeemed in your shop. When the gift certificate is redeemed, you may need to send a revised PayPal invoice to the buyer if there is a remaining balance that needs to be paid on the sale.

A final point of consideration for Etsy sellers who offer gift certificates is the associated Etsy fees. Two separate transactions occur with Etsy shop gift certificates: one when the gift certificate is purchased by the gift-giver, and one when the gift certificate is redeemed by the recipient. Applicable listing and transaction fees will be reflected on your Etsy bill for both of these transactions.

I worked my own B&M store for over 15 years and changing the shelves and display cases was a daily requirement! Shelf by shelf and case by case, the store always looked fresh. The Art of Slow: A Celebration of the Handmade

Today Lou Sagar, Etsy's resident merchandising consultant and Slow Movement devotee, will tell us a bit of the history behind this growing shift. Slow Food creates a thoughtful intersection between planting, harvesting and preparing an artisanal meal and the craftsmanship behind a thrown ceramic bowl, a roughly hewn oak table and the woven tablecloth that covers it. The end result is a mindful meal that is eco-friendly, sustainable, delicious and distinctly memorable. Here's Lou.

The Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity was initially formed in partnership with the Italian region of Tuscany to recognize that the appreciation of cooking and fine foods must include the safeguarding of local farms and the preservation of cultural traditions. What began as a movement focused upon a concern for “terra-verde” (Mother Earth) is now emerging as a global mindset promoting a healthier approach to contemporary living and sustainable values. At its core there is deep admiration for the handmade. In fact, it’s notable that the birthing of this movement took place in Italy, a country which, during the Renaissance, made the artisan noble. The crafting of handmade objects was celebrated. Ceramicists, glassblowers, metalworkers, woodworkers, and goldsmiths were honored, just like we do here at Etsy.

As opposed to the culture of fast food, the sub-movement known as Slow Food celebrates the process of growing and making things as much as it does the end product. This process is an essential part of the story, which enhances the experience. There is respect for materials, techniques, and presentation. Often misunderstood, the first impression of “Slow” is the idea that we one should “slow down,” which is certainly not the intent at all. It’s the added pleasure and wisdom we enjoy when we practice the “art of slow,” which is how I have come to appreciate and share it.

As we all know, the responsibilities associated with our busy lives and work are often hectic and overwhelming. As we move towards spring (in the Northern Hemisphere, at least!), keep “the art of slow” in mind as you celebrate the Easter and Passover holidays later this month. Think global but shop local. Ask local growers to tell you their stories. Use small dishes for tastings. Get the kids out into the garden to feel the soil. Spend a night outside looking at the stars. Most of all, encourage handmade gifts for friends, family, and associates.

Shop Makeover Series: Photogenic Collaborations

As part of our Shop Makeover Series, rubypearl will be hosting a follow up talk in the Virtual Labs at 4pm today, Monday January 19, 2009!

“I can’t sell my dresses online.” This was the answer I would give over and over again when asked if I had a website. My dresses sold like crazy at local boutiques and craft fairs, but when I thought about selling them on the web, my mind drew a blank. How would it work if my customers couldn’t try them on or feel the fabric? No, I thought, I’d love to, but it just won’t work.

Then I found Etsy. Everything changed, but not all at once.

I began by taking dim pictures in my backyard. Now, this may work for you if you are a good photographer. Sadly, I am not. Even our family photos look like my two year old snapped them.

I began to make friends with photographers and stylists who helped me out. As my photographs improved, my store took off like a rocket.

Here are some things that I've learned.

Even very well known photographers need designers who will loan clothes for their clients to model, and they are very often willing to burn a disc of pictures for you for free or trade.

Attend local photography shows at galleries and coffee shops.

Find mid-level singers and songwriters and send them photos of your work. Target musicians who are well known enough to give your clothes some cachet and whose style fits what you’re doing. Clearly, you will probably never get a call back from Beyonce no matter how much free stuff you send her, unless you know her stylist or her best friend. If so, why are you reading this? You should be emailing me; I have some dresses that would look great on her!

Offer musicians clothes for free or at a discount to wear on stage. Ask who their favorite photographers are; musicians often have other clients who could give your work celebrity exposure.

Post flyers at the local colleges. A beginning photographer may have a brilliant eye but also need to build their portfolio.

Connecting with your local community of photographers is great marketing. Portrait photographers make their living by networking with people. They shoot weddings, children, musicians and professional models — all of whom could be your potential customers. By enlisting their help with your Etsy photography you are exposing your work to everyone who walks into their studios.

Start small and attend every event with a positive attitude. You never know who you’ll meet or where little events will lead you. A few months after I started my company I set a booth up at an art fair hosted by a tiny coffee shop. It was raining. No more than ten people passed through that day. One of them was Patty Griffin’s photographer. She loved what I was doings and set up a meeting with me. I ended up designing a dress for her album cover. If I hadn’t been at that coffee shop, I never would have met her.

Musicians always need unique clothing to wear on stage, and there is no better advertisement than someone singing in front of hundreds of people in your creation. Make sure you snap some photos of them in your designs before they leave your studio. Give them special treatment and they will keep coming back to you.

When I met Erykah Badu she was sitting Indian style on the floor of my booth, digging through a box of squirrel-themed skirts to find her size. She had just finished her set at the Austin City Limits festival and wandered into my booth to do some shopping. Glowing and five months pregnant, she laughed at me when I suggested that I could find it for her.

“I can do it! I gotta find me a squirrel skirt. I love squirrels! Whenever I sing a song at home and it has the word girl I always substitute squirrel.”

She assembled a large heap of my best dresses and paid with cash. I was so dazzled I didn’t get her stylist's email or any pictures other than one with her standing next to me.

Learn from my mistakes — even if you have to give celebrities samples of your clothing for free — and make sure to snap that picture. Do whatever it takes. Then send it out with your press kit when you alert the local media about your amazing new design business. Celebrities will understand — they had to be marketing geniuses to get where they are now.

By working with photographers you can expand your client base, entice celebrities to model your creations and present beautiful photos to your Etsy customers. Since your customers are unable to try your clothing on, you must capture their imaginations through photography. If you are camera-challenged like me, find someone brilliant to help you.

Your pictures will tell a story that inspires them to envision wearing your creation. It won’t matter that they can’t feel the fabric: they will feel beautiful imagining themselves in what you’ve made.

We see versions of this question posted daily on the Etsy forums: "Are my photos Treasury worthy?" "Why am I never picked for the Etsy front page?" Answers abound in the form of photography tips and tricks and networking advice. In my opinion, what most of us are missing in our own photography is the vital element of perspective. How do your photos look side by side with those that are appearing on the front page? Using Etsy's Poster Sketch you can easily check for yourself and, in some cases, make adjustments to your existing photos to make them work.

First, go to Poster Sketch. (I bookmarked it, so I can click on it anytime and get to work.) Load the Poster Sketch with the item(s) of yours that you want to test, along with items you have seen on the front page. I started with the photo above because I thought it was so great and I could not understand how so many front pages featuring these colors could get posted and not one of them feature my bag. What I discovered was that while my bag was photogenic, showing it in its entirety was keeping it out of Treasuries. There was too much white space and the photo lost all of its punch. After cropping the photo closer, it becomes Treasury worthy. Here is a screen shot of the finished sketch. My bag is in the lower left corner.

Using this method, I have discovered that some of my bags need a fresh photo shoot. The last photo in the third row of the poster above is a detail shot of a cute bag, but I am afraid that the fabric is a lot better in person than it is in the photos. This shot might work a little better, but I am afraid it is still too washed out and small for the front page. The door and the brick wall is more interesting than the bag. Can you be brutally honest with yourself? I have to accept that this bag is not front page material and never will be.

Here is another Poster Sketch I put together with one of my bags in each row. Each row could be the start of a complete treasury. I think they hold up to scrutiny along side the most popular sellers. With this method, now I don't have to guess if my photos are Treasury worthy, I can check them myself!

Materials Needed:

Teacup or porcelain objects

Dremel tool

Diamond tipped dremel bits

A container filled with water

Scissors

Steps for Making Porcelain Ornaments

Submerge your porcelain object in a container of water
Put a mark where you are going to drill a hole
Drill a hole
Cut a length of beaded string and remove some of the beads
Put a beaded string through the hole and tie a knot

Handy Item Listing Checklist for Sellers

Dear Sellers,

Want to make sure your getting the most views for your items? Here's a handy checklist for you to go through before your press that big orange "finish" button on your item listing.

Step 1: Title & Description

☐ Make sure your title describes your item in both the gallery and list views! Here's an example of some Etsy felt moustaches. In the first gallery view you can see that the title clearly describes the item, in the second the title is just too long, with the important info hidden!

☐ Does your description tell the buyer the exact dimensions and/or size of your piece?

☐ Does your description tell the buyer a bit about how you made the item and the materials you've used to create this item? (Hint: write in the active voice and a bit of personality — "I made this moustache by carefully observing the cutest moustaches around town and painstakingly cutting these out of felt with the sharpest scissors I have!"... instead of "These moustaches were made by cutting out felt.")

☐ Is your listing free of spelling or grammatical errors? Spellcheck!

Step 2: Tagging Your Items

☐ Does your first tag designate which category your item belongs in? See this article for a recent update about searching the Vintage and Supply categories.

☐ Have you used all 14 tags? The more tags you use, the more likely your item will be found in a search, so use them up! Here's an article that can help you brainstorm tags if you are stuck and another article about Guidelines & Tips that gives you specific ideas for types of tags to use.

☐ Have you listed all the materials used in the Material tags area?

Step 3: Price, Quantity and Shipping

☐ Does the price you've set for your item cover your time and material cost? This Art of Pricing series can help you make sure you are making money!

☐ Make sure you have the correct quantity listed, remember you get charged $0.20 for each item!

☐ Make sure your shipping fees cover the actual shipping cost (check with your country's postal service website, they can usually help you figure out shipping rates). A shipping article that might help can be found here.

Step 4: Images

☐ Are your photos at least 430 pixels x 430 pixels? (Check out the example below. The image on the left was about 800 pixels square and the one on the right was only 200. See the difference in quality?) Uploading photos up to 1000px across is a good idea — that way, when a potential buyer clicks on your photo, she can see an enlarged version.

☐ Have you used all 5 photos?

☐ Do your photos show your item from all sides?

☐ Do you show the item in its natural environment? (i.e a painting hung on the wall, a t-shirt on a model, etc)

☐ Is your most "clickable" photo the first one listed?

Step 5: The final look-over

☐ Does this listing fit in with and/or compliment the others in your shop (think about price, color, style, branding, etc)?

☐ Is it clear and does the listing represent your item as accurately as possible?

☐ Does it follow Etsy's TOU and Do's & Don'ts?

☐ Lastly, after you list the item, if you have sections inside your shop, have your filed this item in its proper section?

How-to Get Ready for a Big Show with the New New Team

Summer craft fair season is upon us! I've been watching The New New street team organize their booth each week at Brooklyn Flea. This weekend the New New leaves the Brooklyn Flea nest and heading for the Bust Spring Craftacular at the Warsaw. If you're in NYC, make sure you drop by and check out the hard work they put into organizing and displaying their booth! They'll have lots of freebees to make it worth your while!

Here are some tips, and some photos of the New New booth to help inspire you for your next big show.

1. Make a nice big banner!
