Etsy in the Press: All About Alliteration

I present you with a plethora of press (I heart alliteration, and I apologize in advance). In all seriousness, let's talk shop(ping). You may be familiar with Nina Garcia, former editor at ELLE Magazine and a judge on Project Runway. No slouch when it comes to style, Nina has recently written a book called The Style Strategy, in which she references Etsy as a great place to shop for handmade.

And Nina's not the only one who thinks so — some awesome Aussies at news.com.au, as well as Paige Rien, who dabbles in design for HGTV and writes for The Luxury Spot, would agree. As would the fabulous folks over at Time.com, who (as previously noted) voted Etsy as one of their Top 50 Websites of the year... for the third year running! Add to that lovely mix the makers of Marketing Magazine (that one wrote itself), who dubbed us one of the 10 hottest fashion websites. They had a particularly poignant description: "Comparing Etsy with eBay is akin to comparing Chanel's Paris flagship store with Primark's Hammersmith outpost. The latter is all about volume and price while the former is all about design, authenticity and all things beautiful."

So what are some things people are shopping for these days? Why, weddings, of course! That's according to, "The Girls in the Beauty Dept." over at Glamour's Daily Beauty Blog, who topped it with the hilarious headline, "I Found the Perfect Hairthing for My Wedding."

Weddings are a special day, when all attention is focused on two individuals (...in theory; in reality, it's all about the bride, and that's how it should be, right fellas?). And what better way to express your individuality than through custom cake toppers? The New York Times recently ran an article to that effect, which included the word "commemorabilia." There is also an accompanying slideshow that you should see. Of course, the perma-snarks over at Gawker had something to say about that. But they did manage, in their own back-handed way, to compliment the Etsians who make said toppers.

Speaking of individuals, one writer for Channel 3 in New Zealand is chronicling her wedding planning adventures on Etsy, summing it up with, "Oh dear. I think I'm hooked. Quick, someone block the website before I spend all our money!" The media moguls at Mashable had an interesting take on the topic as well, giving tips and tricks for planning a wedding using social media. Of course a crucial component (oh, I am on a roll here) of any wedding is the dress. Inhabitat offers us up as a the perfect place to procure eco-friendly wedding dresses, as well as garments for the groom's party.

Which gives me a sweet segue into our next segment, going green. Etsy can be a great place to help save the planet, in a variety of ways. The Daily Green denotes our decor selection, while the B'More Green blog section of the Baltimore Sun recommends us for back-to-school choices. Focusing on fashion, Feel Good Style has been "doing quite a bit of shopping on Etsy and have been thoroughly satisfied and quite literally, have been seen jumping up and down in glee with the results." Meanwhile, The Green Life, a part of the Sierra Club site, stated their stance on shopping for jewelry. The Sierra Club! Could it get any greener? On the seller side, E, the environmental magazine, offered up tips from Etsy sellers on greening up your shop.

In other business news, the latest issue of Entrepreneur includes a look at Etsy and features some of our favorite, um, features. Fortunately, Fast Company notes that consumers are hungry for personal connections, and finds that to be one factor for financial fitness.

Time for trends! Paste magazine seeks sloth stuff. Today Show.com chooses crafting to calm. Good Housekeeping.com gets giddy for (pet) garb. Real Simple's Simply Stated selects snappy coloring book. The Los Angeles Times spots silverware, sort of. Hope that helps. Again, apologies. Arrivederci!

Katy Elliott is a blogger, freelance writer, and home renovator. In her previous life, Katy was a web editor at some of our favorite defunct magazines like House & Garden and Domino. Recently, she left New York to renovate a 257-year-old house in Marblehead, Massachusetts. She documents the highs and lows of the renovation on her blog including sources and daily inspiration.

I love living in New England and by the ocean. My house is so old that it existed even before the constitution was signed. Crazy, right? The house is a little odd; we don't have any hallways, just rooms that lead into other rooms. We are slowly renovating the three story home, project by project.

Buying your first house is a pretty big deal. We saved for a couple of years to come up with the money for a down payment. Every dime we have goes into the house: it's our money pit, but we love it. The first year has been spent just getting the house cleaned up and structurally sound. This fall, we're installing our first bathroom. I don't mind the slow pace of the renovation. We spend a lot of time thinking about smart solutions and trying to renovate as little as possible. I want the home's character to last for another 200 years.

Finding art and objects for the house can be difficult because the rooms are so small and we have funny little niches everywhere. What I've discovered touring other older homes is that these "odd spots" are great nooks for art and objects. Etsy has a wonderful selection of affordable art and objects that fit the style of my home and budget. I spend hours late at night after a long day of stripping wallpaper imagining prints and maps framed on my walls. Below are my picks to fit a historic New England home. The finds feel a bit rustic but classic. I borrow my inspiration from old English cottages and striking Swedish interiors. Enjoy!

Instant Gratification: The Polaroid Legacy

In 2008, the Polaroid Corporation announced that it was ceasing production of all of its instant films and cameras. In a digital age, many believed that Polaroids were a nostalgic, but redundant, throwback to the analog era. However, even a cursory glance at Etsy reveals that there are many amazing artists that continue to work with the beautiful medium of instant peel apart and integral films. Polaroid photography thrives on Etsy, and with the Polaroid Street Team growing each day, the marketplace is a wonderful venue for exploring the amazing world of instant photography. Artists using vintage Polaroid cameras abound, selling their original photos, emulsion lifts, transfers, and photo and giclée prints to growing audiences that love the soft focus and nostalgic beauty that only genuine analog instant photography can create.

Instant photography as we know it today was the invention of one of the 20th century's most astonishing scientific minds, Edwin H. Land (1909-1991). The creator of 537 patents (only Thomas Edison held more!) and founder of the Polaroid Corporation in 1937, Land's early inventions included 3-D movie glasses, guided missile systems, and polarized eyewear and camera lenses. His 4-year-old daughter, Jennifer, inspired Land’s most artistic breakthrough. In 1944, while her father took a series of photos, the young girl asked, "Can I see them now, Daddy? Why can't I see them now?" This poignant, direct question got Land thinking, and by 1947, he debuted the world's first instant photography to a stunned audience in New York City. By 1949, Polaroid roll film cameras were flying off the shelves, and photographers such as Ansel Adams were hired as dedicated artistic consultants. By 1950, over one million rolls of Polaroid instant film had been sold, and by 1956, over one million cameras were in the possession of excited artists and hobbyists thrilled by the actualized answer to little Jennifer Land's question, "Why can't I see them now?"

With Land at the helm, the Polaroid Corporation continued to introduce amazing new advances in instant photography. In the 1960s, the era of the Pack Film cameras emerged, along with color film and large format cameras. As families around the world used Polaroids to commemorate their lives, professional artists became captivated by the Polaroid's immediacy, as well as the myriad ways that peel-apart Pack film could be manipulated. Emulsion lifts and transfers became increasingly popular among enthusiasts, while the large format films became de rigueur tools of portrait and fashion photographers. Moreover, industrial uses of Polaroids skyrocketed, thanks to instant passport and ID photo cameras, instant X-rays, and the value of instant crime scene photography to police and fire investigators.

By the dawn of the 1970s, Polaroid cameras were ubiquitous features in homes and businesses, and artists, such as Andy Warhol, were famous for their Polaroid images. However, Land had an even more remarkable invention to unleash upon the world: the SX-70, a single-lens reflex camera that created a photograph that viewers could watch develop before their eyes. This iconic camera, released to the public in 1972, created a revolution in photography. Using a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use, platform, the SX-70 amazed consumers with its magical integral photos that developed in the palms of their hands. SX-70 photos became renown for their intricate details, soft colors, and the novelty of having an image appear moments after it was taken. Polaroid artists discovered that the emulsion of the SX-70's dedicated film, known as Time-Zero, could be manipulated to emulate the soft, dreamy lines of impressionist paintings.

Over the next thirty years, many billions of Polaroids were taken around the world. New cameras, such as the 600, the Spectra, and the I-Zone, were in use alongside the SX-70 and Land Pack film cameras. However, by the beginning of the 21st century, Edwin Land had passed away, and the Polaroid Corporation found itself adrift. Poor fiscal management, the acquisition of the company by outside forces uninterested in promoting the innovative technologies for which the company was famous, and the rise of digital photography had a terrible impact on Polaroid's bottom line. In 2008, the Polaroid Corporation announced it was ceasing production of all instant films. Polaroid enthusiasts around the world were devastated, and artists who rely on the unique qualities of pack film, Time-Zero, and other integral film products, were thrown into deep mourning.

However, a determined crew of Polaroid enthusiasts vowed to keep the Polaroid legacy alive. At the forefront of the movement was Etsy's own Anne Bowerman, otherwise known as Polaroidgirl on Etsy, a cofounder of Save Polaroid, a grassroots movement to promote instant photography. With the activism of Save Polaroid and many other fans around the world, new hope for instant photography has sprouted! The most exciting development has been the creation of the Impossible Project, a promising business venture that plans on reintroducing Polaroid-compatible instant photography in 2010. It appears that, in this era of digital photography, analog is not dead; there is nothing that can emulate the magic of holding a Polaroid in your hands and watching it develop, and the new resurgence of instant photography's popularity promises to carry the medium well into the 21st century.

How-Tuesday: Felt Rug from Dorm Decor

College living is an extreme in decorating challenges: limited space, limited funds, and limited time. In my years of undergraduate life, I tried wall tapestries, fabric flowers, ceramic tchotchkes, vintage hat mannequins, tie dye, crocheted afghans, mason jars, and more collaging than I care to remember. In an effort to compensate for the cheap generic furniture and beer-stained carpet, I saturated my dorm rooms with a technicolor blur of clutter.

I wish I had found Theresa Gonzalez and Nicole Smith's book, Dorm Decor, back when I was still enrolled, because I was in desperate need of some creative focus. This week's How-Tuesday project is for all of those crafty co-eds settling into their drafty, fluorescent-lit dorm rooms. There is hope! This Felt Rug requires no sewing skills and seems like the perfect project for orientation bonding.

Excited to move into your new room? It could be so many things: A cozy nest. Party central! Cinderblock city. (OK, sorry, dorm living isn't always that dire.) No matter how you imagine your room, the point is, it's yours! How you decorate it and make it your perfect place for the next nine months is entirely up to you.

We like to think of a small, undecorated space as an opportunity to get creative and dream up ways to make it better. We've learned from studying interior design and working at craft and fashion magazines that going from blank box to comfy nest can happen quickly — and on a budget — when you want it to.

In the end, it's all about putting your own personal style on your surroundings. Think about it: Why would you buy run-of-the-mill linens from the same place you buy your soap and tampons?! It can be much more satisfying to sew something, custom-made, that no one else will have. Create (and think!) for yourself with projects that say free-thinker, not following-the-pack. Gather the girls (and crafty boys, we know you're out there) and take a creative leap — this is your chance to stand out from the cookie-cutter crowd. And come May, when it's time to pack up your things, you can take these tricks with you to next year's sanctuary.

Cut-It-Out Felt Rug

Non-fraying felt makes this project a cinch, and the zebra motif will have your hallmates demanding where you found it. It's so simple you can adjust the technique to make a rug in just about any size or style, including a welcome mat (or good-bye mat behind the door).

You'll need:
Zebra rug template (download here)
2 yards (72" wide) gray felt
2 yards (72" wide) orange felt
4 yards (72" wide) cream felt
6' x 2' piece of 2" grid pattern paper
Carbon paper and tracing wheel
Pencil
Scissors
Fabric Glue

Make the pattern.
1. Using the zebra rug template (download here), draw the zebra rug pattern onto the 2" grid pattern paper. Draw a 2" border around the edges and cut out the template around the outer edges.

Cut out the pieces.
2. Fold the gray felt in half lengthwise and lay it on the floor. Lay the template on the felt with the template's straight edge even with the fold in the fabric. Following the instructions on the carbon paper, trace the design onto the felt with the tracing wheel.

3. Remove the template and carbon paper. Pin the layers of felt together and cut out the design.

4. Repeat for the orange felt.

Assemble the rug.
5. Lay the cream felt out flat on the floor. Unfold the gray felt piece and lay it flat on top of the cream felt. Pin in place.

6. Cut the cream layer to the same size as the outer edge of the gray felt. Glue the layers together with fabric glue and let the glue dry.

7. Place the rug over the cream felt again and cut out another layer. Glue the layers together with fabric glue and let dry.

8. Flip the rug over and place the orange piece in place, matching the raw edges. Pin the layers in place and glue them together.

How-Tuesday: Make a Stamp with Art Mind

Are you looking for an easy way to make your own stamp? Handmade stamps are the perfect addition to scrapbooking, greeting cards, packages and more. Belgian Etsy seller Mitsy, aka ArtMind, would love to show you how to get started! First, gather your tools and materials. Here's what you'll need:

A lino cutting set
A pencil
A simple design to carve
A Sharpie marker
Ink
Gum (soft printing blocks like these)

Step 1: Trace the design with a pencil.

Step 2: Flip the pencil drawing over and rub it onto the gum.

Step 3: Trace the pencil outline on your block with a Sharpie marker.

Step 4: Cut away all of the gum, except for the black outlines.

Step 5: Put some ink on the stamp and press onto paper.

Step 6: You can clearly see that the stamp needs to be cut more. All of the black marks can be cut away. You can either use the lino cutters for this or a little scalpel knife.

Step 7: Repeat the process of stamping again to see if it looks better after cutting away some more gum.

Now you can glue your soft stamp to a block of wood or acrylic and stamp away!

Spoil That Mommy! A Mother's Day Compendium with Crabmommy

Avid Etsy-buyer Amanda Gersh writes the blog Crabmommy. She divides her time between motherhood and complaining about it.

As Mother's Day rolls around, I find myself feeling exactly as I did last year. While my 4-year-old daughter is a delicious nugget of a small human, my idea of a perfect Mother's Day is to NOT feel like a mother. Last year my husband indulged my wish, granting me an entire day of wafting around vintage stores — something I've done little of since becoming a mom. What a luxury to be free to examine needlepoint teapot cozies and try on ratty two-tone pumps to my heart's content, without worrying about bored tots bouncing on Heywood Wakefield couches. Bliss!

Of course, Mother's Day takes many ideal forms, often a burned breakfast in bed delivered on a tray by loving offspring. It's all very cute indeed, but if you ask me, it's even cuter when augmented by a day of freedom and aimless wafting for Mom and/or a gorgeous token of affection via Etsy, where a vast emporium of delights awaits any lucky mother if she possesses appreciative and savvy loved ones.

Proceed and Be Bold: A Documentary

Brown Finch Films is a filmmaking collaborative based in Chicago, Illinois that produces transformative documentary films that inspire, evoke, and enliven. The cinema is both an art and an history, and as filmmakers, they respect their calling to make films that are both artistic and insightful. Their films probe deep into their subjects to ask questions that are controversial, historical, rhetorical, and inspirational.

We came to the Etsy blog because our documentary, Proceed and Be Bold! is about a self-employed artist, and we thought that other Etsians would love to see a film about someone who makes a living with their art. Also, we love Etsy and shop here often!

Brown Finch Films is kind of like a craft club for people who like making films instead of scarves… Our first documentary feature film, called Proceed and Be Bold! is the biography of an inspiring artist, Amos Paul Kennedy Jr. He quit his corporate job at the age of 40 to follow his dream of becoming a letterpress artist, or as he calls himself, “a humble negro printer.” Laura Zinger, the director and co-founder of Brown Finch Films, was initially intrigued by Amos’s racially and socially provocative posters. She took a dinky little video camera to one of his gallery shows a couple years ago, then looked at the footage and saw the possibility for a feature documentary film.

Amos’s inspiring story really took root in Laura. His journey is about finding true joy in creating the things you yearn to create and saying the things you really want to say. Laura teamed up with cinematographer and Brown Finch Films co-founder Michelle Kaffko and editor Stacey Simcik, dragging them across the country (and even to Italy) filming amazing artists and crafters who know Amos.

We were filming in some amazing art and craft spaces, including Hatch Show Print, a letterpress company in Nashville that has been printing event posters since 1879. Current head Jim Sherraden gave us a tour of the floor-to-ceiling shelves that house block prints for the presses, and showed us how the shelves themselves are made out of discarded block prints nailed to the frames.

While filming at the design and silkscreen printshop, Standard Deluxe in Waverly, AL (population, 265), we met a proprietor who built a beautiful wall in his studio out of salvaged windows and doors, perfectly meshed together Tetris-style. And who can forget the amazing Alberto Casiraghi in the small town of Osnago, Italy, where he fed us a delicious meal, and then showed us the rooms of his home, which were filled with letterpress art books. He collaborates with other writers, painters and poets, and prints short run editions of art books, refusing to sell them for any more than about $15 each so the everyday person can afford them. We filmed Alberto in his garden and had to repeatedly shoo away his goat, who kept trying to eat the microphone cable…

After meeting all these inspired creators (and their goats), who wouldn’t turn to their own machines of creation and start making stuff? The finches at Brown Finch Films (or BFF as we like to call ourselves) came back to our Chicago home and started sifting through all of the footage to put the story of Amos’s life together. We ended up with a documentary film we are incredibly proud of: Proceed and Be Bold!

While taking the film to screenings and panel discussions in theatres, groups, and schools across the country, we also started making our own crafts to raise funds for the production of DVD copies, complete with special features and Italian subtitles for overseas viewers. The crafts started when Michelle made some cute little handmade felt plush finches for the film premiere, to give to everyone who helped out during production of the film as a thank-you gift. The finches were a hit, and people started asking for them at other screenings. So Michelle made a handful more to sell at screenings, and she called them “fundraising finches” so people knew that purchasing a felt finch went directly to the filmmaking collaborative. Soon she was making mini felt finches as pins for the filmmakers and their collaborators to wear at screenings. Then, naturally, she started making felt pins with swear words on them, and they were selling like hotcakes.

I guess what everyone at Brown Finch Films learned through this experience is what Amos was telling us all along: “Don’t be an artist. Artists are full of themselves. Just make stuff. Just quit your job or whatever you hate doing, and make stuff, damnit.” And that’s what the finches are doing now. Laura quit her 9-to-5 job, swapped it for a part time teaching gig and moving back in with her father to lower her cost of living, all to be able to truly follow her dream and make a documentary film. Now we’re all hooked. We’ve got three more feature documentary films currently in the works, and still booking screenings for Proceed and Be Bold!

Trends: Love of Triangles (But Not Love Triangles!)

Q: What did the triangle say to the circle?
A: Your life seems so pointless.

Is it just me, or does some strange, magical phenomenon occur when you become infatuated with something? You start seeing it everywhere! Currently, I can't escape triangles. They surround me in the structures of buildings, prints in clothing and often on my dinner plate (I eat lot's of cake, what can I say?).
I never paid much attention in geometry class — I was busy doodling my three-sided polygons into slices of pizza and dancing trees — but who cares about using the Pythagorean theorem when the aesthetic value of a triangle is so much more interesting?

Artistic Endeavors: Art School Confidential with Pepperminte

Meet Caitlin Shearer, aka pepperminte, a nineteen-year-old fine artist and student from Australia with a passion for painting fancy girls and effeminate boys. She is obsessed with dollhouses, Marilyn Monroe, and aliens, and dreams of illustrating her own storybooks one day. Caitlin's delicate works in gouache, watercolor, and ink have captured the hearts of many across the blogosphere and beyond. Today she shares with us her own personal account of what it's like juggling a successful Etsy shop with the task of being a full time art school student.

2008 was the biggest year I've encountered so far. At eighteen, I'd just graduated from high school and faced the daunting prospect of being a grown up: university, employment, and the real world! I'd spent all my free time painting during high school, and pretty much used my classes as an opportunity to sit and draw. After graduating high school with top marks in art and having my major art project accepted into a statewide traveling exhibition called Art Express, I knew that I wanted to be an illustrator for real.

I enrolled in a fine arts degree at the College of Fine Arts in Sydney. The school is a two and a half hour commute on public transport, so I needed to scrounge together some pennies to pay for my train fares. I had seen Etsy through a few art blogs and decided to open a shop of my own. Never did I realize that it would be such a hit. It really is so humbling to think that there are people in other countries who have my paintings on their bedroom walls.


Blue Blood	The Siren

Juggling university with socializing, Etsy, homework, and the commute, I barely have enough time to draw for myself during the semester. We have such long holidays, but by then, I've kinda fallen out of sync (It's terrible, my hands get all creaky and forget what to do!). Luckily, the people on Etsy are very kind to me, even when their envelopes are a little late. Remembering to go to the post office at regular intervals is a challenge, though I practically know all of the post office employees in four different suburbs now! Keeping things constant and reliable is the goal, but sometimes it is hard to manage everything at the same time. It's a real job! I rely on the internet wholeheartedly now, which can be a nuisance, but it all just appears within my inbox like magic, so really, I can't complain.

Art school can be amazing though. I took life drawing classes last year with some absolutely wonderful teachers, like Anwen Keeling. That experience really improved my drawing skills, and therefore benefited the personal art that I was making and selling on Etsy. I also studied textiles, which helped me to think in a non-paper-and-pencil way. Experimenting in a more 3-D process really opened up my brain.

I love Etsy, I really do. I consider myself extremely lucky to be able to work out of my bedroom and simultaneously have a global platform to showcase my art. Twenty years ago, or even ten years ago, people didn't have this kind of opportunity (so thank you, Internet!). I also love browsing Etsy. It's great to see that these young artists can band together and help each other out in such a friendly atmosphere. We are all in the same situation, trying to make artwork as a career, and I haven't encountered any animosity so far. It's a constant stream of advice, opinion, and constructive criticism, which I think is a very valuable thing.

Speaking of friends, Caitlin has gathered art school insight from some of her Etsy inspirations...

Renee, aka art4friends: "Since I started selling on Etsy and got involved in this wonderful creative world, I have been giving all or nothing in terms of commitment and dedication. Uni holidays are great; they give me a chance to get back on track, create lots of things, participate in the community and promise myself to keep it up once classes start back up (I haven’t quite managed to perfect this yet!).

I think I have learned so much more than I ever could at college by being part of this wonderful community. There is so much more you need to know than how to paint a pretty picture (unless you have the luxury of employing someone! Ha!). By interacting with people from all over the world and learning from my own mistakes, I feel much more prepared and informed."

Sarah, aka funiscool: "I started selling on Etsy when I was just finishing up my last year of art school. At school, they actually had a class where they told us, 'You will not be able to leave art school and support yourself with your artwork,' which was a bit depressing. I suppose it was a lot harder for all my teachers to get their work 'out there' because they didn't have the Internet back when they finished school. At first, it was kind of hard to get my orders out to people, make new things, and go to all my classes and exams, but I made it out the other side and was happy to have the transition time that I did, between school and the real world.

As far as tips go, I would suggest doing whatever you want as long as you are putting forth the effort it takes to be successful. Everything works itself out eventually, and if you are happy during the process, it usually works out all the better."

Matthew Senkowycz, aka Matay (on the drawings he sells in his Etsy shop): "I have just finished my Bachelor of Design in Architecture, majoring in Urban Planning and Allied Arts, so there has always been an aspect of creativity in what I have done post-high school.

Occasionally, I have been able to let areas of study and interest overlap, exploring similar concepts in various mediums simultaneously. For example, the form of a building will relate to the clothes of the figures I’m drawing and perhaps also to an installation art piece or a photograph. At other times, a single subject (usually architectural design practice) will require so much time that I’ll barely have time to eat, let alone indulge in freeing some of the characters in my mind. This isn’t always a bad thing though, because once it’s all out of the way (usually a week or two) pent up ideas just seem to ooze out onto the paper.

Drawing has also provided me with a source of escape. There’s nothing like creeping into your mind with your own soundtrack for an hour or two after a day of 'constructive criticism' for design tutors and students alike. I often find the works that I like the most appear when I am experiencing extremes of emotions…or after I’ve seen the latest Jil Sander collection."

Andrea Shear, aka andreashear: "In England I was doing mostly experimental video installations, and in New York I specialized in computer art and animation, so the majority of my art-making was short films and animations. Even during this time I was really interested in incorporating a handmade look into what is traditionally a very polished medium. I think this period influenced my love for the handmade aesthetic, as well as an appreciation for juggling two areas of interest.

My advice to students and other artists trying to balance school or work and Etsy is to avoid telling yourself that there isn't not enough time, and just make an effort to put your work out there."

Juliana Swaney, aka ohmycavalier: "Even though Etsy was only started the year I graduated, I found my art school experience to be very helpful for what I’m doing now. I was a printmaking major and was lucky enough to have some professors that were into ‘non-traditional’ ways of selling and distributing art, especially prints and multiples, so they really encouraged us to get our work out there in ways besides just the gallery.

Since Etsy wasn’t around while I was in school, my experience was a little different. I started out participating in art and craft sales where I sold cards and prints. That turned out to be really positive, and I feel like doing it sort of validated what I was doing and showed I could make money after I left school. I think that can be one of the hard parts of art school: you don’t necessarily get a lot of help with the practical aspects of selling your work, and a career after school can seem pretty vague. That’s why I’m happy I got some of that experience by selling in small, low-stress situations. I made some mistakes and muddled though things early on, but that helped me get my act together and gain confidence so I could continue to sell my work and make a living after I graduated."

Tabitha Emma, aka tabidesigns: "Juggling school and business can be hard at times, but it's really a matter of good time management, like keeping on top of when assignments are due and when you need to get wholesale or custom orders done. I try to write a list of what I want to complete by the end of the week, in terms of both my business and schoolwork. Of course, if I have a lot of homework, I will have to scale back on how much I can do with my shop. I'm always doodling ideas for new products in my book while in class, so even if I don't have time to work on it, I'm still thinking about it.

[Selling on Etsy] is a great experience because you get work experience while studying, and you learn to deal with customers and clients. It's also a good way to get your name out there, become part of the creative community, and make contacts with some awesome, talented fellow creatives. It helps to put what you're learning into the real world."

Artistic Endeavors: Art Buyers’ Guide to Printmaking

Etsy shoppers are often on the lookout for affordable original art, and hand-pulled prints are a great place for art lovers to start building a collection. I won’t delve into too much detail regarding the different techniques, but if you’re interested in learning more, please take a look at the links listed below.

Put simply, printmaking is the process of making an artwork by transferring an image from a surface on which ink is applied – a plate, block, screen or stone – to another (usually paper). Often multiples are printed, which is known as an edition, but each impression is an original artwork, handmade by the artist. Limited editions are signed and numbered by the artist, which makes the print more valuable.

Monoprints

Sometimes only one print is made, called a monoprint or monotype.

What determines the different types of printmaking, such as an engraving, etching, lithograph, linocut, woodcut or screen print, is the material the inked surface is made from, the way the image is created on its surface, and the way the ink is applied and transferred.

Relief Prints

For example, with relief prints, such as linocuts and woodcuts, the block is carved away by the artist until the image is left in relief, then the ink is applied to the surface with a roller (called a brayer), and pressure is applied — by using a baren, a press, or even the back of a humble spoon — to transfer the ink to paper (or sometimes fabric, or other surfaces).

Mixed Media Prints

Artists also like to mix it up by using different printmaking techniques in the one artwork, or applying other media such as paint or collage, to create something truly unique.

Intaglio Prints

With intaglio printmaking, the image is carved into the plate. The intaglio printmaker can make her markings through various methods, such as engraving or etching. After the artist inks the plate, she wipes off the excess ink so that only the marked areas will transfer ink to the paper (or fabric, or other surface).

Screen Prints

Serigraph and silkscreening are other words for screenprinting, the technique of forcing ink through a screen with an image burned into an emulsion layer. (For an in-depth look, check out this Screenprinting and You video). Gocco is a Japanese machine using the screenprinting technique with a built in flash bulb (see a How-To video Etsy made about Gocco printing).

Search for screenprints, gocco, silkscreen, and serigraph on Etsy.

Can all prints be defined as printmaking? The short answer is no. While browsing original prints on Etsy, you may also stumble on reproduction prints. Reproductions are copies of original artworks, such as paintings and drawings. They are not printed by hand, and most often printed digitally, such as inkjet or giclée prints. To add to the confusion, digital art and photography fall into distinct categories of their own. Although they are often printed digitally, they are not reproductions because they are not copies of existing artwork, and yet they don’t fit within the printmaking category either. Confusing? Luckily, most Etsy sellers are very friendly and helpful, and will happily answer your questions about the techniques and printing processes they use, so please don’t hesitate to contact the artist for clarification.

Enough details! Luckily, you don’t need to be an expert to appreciate the beauty of an original print. And even better, you don’t need to be a millionaire to start a collection of original art – printmaking is the perfect place to start!

How-Tuesday: Embellished Frames with Kayte Terry

Do you know those various piles of artwork and photographs that you wish you had frames for? Or those various things you've collected that are tacked to your wall that kind of make your bedroom or living room wall look like a tattered scrapbook? Why not spice up your home decor with an embellished mat in a frame or a custom fabric frame from scratch? This week Kayte Terry of this is love forever shows us what to do!

Materials Needed for the Embellished Mat

The mat from the frame you are using, or one that will fit
1 piece of fabric 2" wider and taller than your mat
Grosgrain ribbon and rick-rack
Needle and thread (optional for making rick-rack flowers)
Fabric scissors
Spray adhesive
Glue gun and glue sticks

Steps for Making Embellished Mat

Spray the front of the mat with spray adhesive. Make sure you do this over newsprint in a well-ventilated area.
Lay your mat out face down on your fabric and center it so that you have 1” of fabric all the way around the mat. Press down on the mat to adhere it to the fabric.
First, you will cover the outside of the mat. Apply a line of hot glue down one edge of the mat 1” from the edge of the mat and from all corners.
Fold the fabric over to the wrong side of the mat and adhere to the hot glue. Repeat for the other three sides. Fold in each corner neatly, like a package, and secure with hot glue.
Make a small cut in the center of the mat with your scissors and carefully cut out the center leaving a 1” overlap of fabric around all sides.
To cover the inner edges of the mat, take your scissors and cut a diagonal slit in the fabric at each inner corner. Cut just to a couple of threads away from the corner of the mat. Fold the fabric back to the wrong side of the mat on each side and secure with a line of hot glue.
To embellish with ribbon, determine where you would like to place the ribbon and carefully hot glue ribbon in place, as desired. You can also make rick-rack flowers like these to further embellish the mats.
Put the mat back in the frame and hang on the wall as desired!

Materials Needed for the Embellished Mat

Cardboard
Batting
Cutting knife
Cutting mat
1 piece of fabric 2" wider and taller than your cardboard
Grosgrain ribbon and rick-rack
Needle and thread (optional for making rick-rack flowers)
Fabric scissors
Glue gun and glue sticks

Steps for Making Fabric Frame From Scratch

Cut a piece of cardboard to your desired size with a cutting knife. Also cut a piece of batting to the same size. Hot glue the batting to the cardboard frame.
Lay your fabric out wrong side up. Hot glue the front of the frame to the batting. Flip the frame over and center on the fabric, pressing to adhere.
Follow steps 3 to 7 above to cover the frame in fabric.
Add a rick-rack or ribbon hanger with some hot glue and hang on the wall!

Oeuvre Evolution: annarubyking

This month Anna from annarubyking tells us about how her flourishing shop started with Christmas cards sent to family members and friends. She became a professional card-maker in two years, and had to learn the same lesson that our previous Oeuvre Evolution artist, Tabitha from ThePairaBirds, was faced with: how to simplify one's own design.

When did you start crafting with paper and textile? Why did you choose this medium?
I think paper is where every artists starts: it's affordable, accessible and you can do so much with it. At university I majored in printmaking, so basically all the processes of print media (etching, screen printing, photography, lithography, graphics) involve paper. In my minor, painting, there was a whole wonderful unit on creating and preparing canvases, as well as making gessos, temperas and varnishes. While this was one of my favorite classes, spending 3 hours making and preparing a canvas really didn't suit my style of work. I was also rather frightened of drop saws, band saws and staple guns.

My interest in textiles comes no doubt from my mother. She quilts, sews, knits, and crochets. I do none of these things. I tried to learn but it just didn't fit. However, I do covet the raw materials, especially fabric. My mum and I would go to fabric shops together, and she would buy fabric and wool for her latest projects, and I would buy fabric just to hoard. I love the colours and patterns and textures.

When I started to make my cards, I decided I needed to incorporate some of my fabric. My stash was growing and growing, and it was time I started using it for something.

How do you evaluate the change between your first piece and the works you do now? In what way did your style change, and why?
The first set of cards that I made was to send to my family and friends for Chistmas, 2006. It was my first Christmas living in another country, and when I went out to buy cards to send that November, there really wasn't that much to choose from. I decided that since I had time to spare, plus an arts degree, I really should be able to make my own.

The cards that I made turned out really well. Everyone told me they loved them, and I decided that I could make some to sell and earn myself a bit of money. When you start wanting to get paid for something, though, you start to rethink how you make that thing, how much the supplies cost and how much time you spend making the item. These cards I made must have taken me 30 minutes each, which is just too much work for a gift card. I had to think about how to simplify my designs and find faster methods. I also started thinking about how my cards would look, as a product, in a shop. I wanted to create a "look" for my cards, so that even if I used different designs and motifs, all my cards would look like Ruby King cards.

In which area do you think you evolved a lot?
I'm really happy with how I managed to simplify my designs. The first cards I made had so many elements. When I look at them now, I think there is too much going on. I was using too many techniques, with no direction. The thing is, I am still using all those same techniques that I used in those first cards. However, in my cards now, I have learned how to be more selective in the ways I use those techniques.

You use a lot of birds in your cards. Why did you choose these flying animals?
Well, birds came about thanks to more product development. I know I'm supposed to say birds are my favorite animal, and I did have many, many pet birds growing up (most were called Oscar or Ernie, if you are curious), but they are not my favorite animal (horses, followed by Labradors).

But I digress. Using birds came about for two main reasons. First, I wanted to have some sort of cute creature as a motif on my cards, and it had to be something that was suitable to many occasions. Second, it had to be something with a shape that was easy to cut out in fabric. All my bird shapes have either one or two sides, making them much easier to cut out than horses or Labradors, for example. I know this process sounds very cold and business-like, but by going through all this design work using birds, I have actually really become quite fixated with them, as you can see by my other artworks — they might now have moved into the third favorite position (sorry, tigers).

What kind of evolution do you see as necessary in the future? What are your plans (if any)?
I still want to try and reduce the amount of time I spend making my cards. I've pretty much halved the time I was spending before. Learning to make things in multiples was a fine revelation, although some of the designs, like the fabric squares cards, have no quick method. I really want to come up with some designs that are a lot speedier so I can have some lower priced options available.

Also, I recently made the decision to stop buying new fabric altogether, and only use recycled and off cut fabric, so once I get through my collection of bought fabrics (okay, that might take a year or more...) my cards will be made of 90 -100% recycled materials, which for me is something really important.

Registries — in my not-so-humble opinion — are tacky, dull, and presumptuous, and I pledge to never, ever purchase some Buy Buy Baby hideous automated mobile off a dang list, much less recommend such an act to my mom-readers! Thankfully, with such a splendid abundance of Etsylicious offerings available, one can ignore those pesky registries and easily find exquisite, lovingly crafted, original, and memorable gifts to be treasured, which is what giving is supposed to be about.

Etsy's baby bootie booty is an embarrassment of riches. I just love the creativity in Etsian handmade shoes. I have a bit of a thing for easy-to-put-on and certain-to-stay-on crossover-style baby shoes, like these from bellaserababy.

One-of-a-kind nursery artwork is the present that lasts forever. Frankly if someone had given me one of zukzuk's bear or soon-to-be-relisted logland prints for my babe, I would have made him or her a godmother even though I'm an atheist.

Artistic Endeavors: Displaying Your Original Artwork

This installment of the Artistic Endeavors series is brought to you by painter lauratrevey. She gives us a how-to on the merits of original artwork and how to display it to its best effect.

Are you tired of your old dusty prints on the wall? Think original artwork. Pick a piece that speaks to you. If you're going to pay for it, you want to love it!

Think different! You want to make a statement. Try a large abstract painting in a formal, more traditional room, like the one I've placed in the above image.

Mats and Frames:
Have your original painting matted well. There is no magic formula for deciding how wide a mat should be, but it is better to choose wider spaces, as it gives the eye somewhere to rest between the picture and frame. Small borders give the impression of a picture being squeezed into a frame that is too small.

Place a thick white mat and frame around any artwork and it will enhance its beauty. I always put my artwork in 3 to 4.5 inch off-white or white mats. Another extra touch is to use a double mat. See how the thin red mat accentuates the red crab painting? By adding a little color, the red crab stands out!

Have you ever heard of “floating” a painting? You may want to consider floating the painting in the frame if there is a deckled edge. (A soft natural edge that is compatible with its linen like texture.) When you float a painting the mat does not cover up the edges, so you see the rough deckled edge. You can also float acrylics and oil paintings.

So artists, take that extra step and present your artwork with added professionalism. Placing a mat around your artwork will give the buyer a better idea of what the finished product will look like. You can buy pre-cut acid-free mats at most art supply stores. I use cheapjoes.com for ordering in bulk. For framing your originals, I recommend finding a locally owned framer with whom you can build a relationship. They want your business and will usually give you lower prices than national retail stores.

Hanging:
Don't be so symmetrical! Shake it up a bit and create an extra artistic element on your wall with the shapes you create with your grouping. Place an odd number and different sizes together. Think about your space. For instance, don't hang a small painting on a large wall — it will get lost in proportion. Either go with one large painting or create a grouping, as mentioned above.

Don't be scared! So many people are afraid of hanging artwork because they're not confident that they've found that one perfect and exact place, and they don't want to be stuck with holes in the wall. Just do it! You can always move paintings around. I do it ALL the time...

It shouldn't be a chore — have fun with it!

Artistic Endeavors: Groundwork's Favorite Prints

Today begins the Etsy blog's week-long focus on artwork, Artistic Endeavors. This series will focus on the many different mediums of art on Etsy, the best ways to showcase it and how best to ascertain what your particular style may be — get in touch with your inner curator! This is but a preview of an ongoing series (more to come), so get a taste and come back for more. The first to contribute to the series is the wonderful and talented Danna Ray of groundwork.

As an artist, I often find it difficult to decide what to paint. I either seem to suffer from too few ideas, or too many to decide between. In the end, I'm always happiest when I choose the ideas I have the strongest emotional connection with. I also try to keep this in mind when it comes to buying art. There's so much incredible work out there... and it can be so tough to choose! I like to pick pieces that I have some sense of connection with — whether it's a place I'd like to be, a bit of nostalgia, or just something that would make me smile each time I passed by. I'm so happy to share some of my favorites!

Der hohe Pfad III - 8 x 10 Polaroid Print

I'd love to hang this ethereal Polaroid print in my home as a daily reminder that such places actually exist. I was even fonder of this print when I read the artist's description: "The Polaroids were taken on a mountain in the Bavarian Alps, on a chilly and foggy day in May. This is such a nice diptych by Leah Giberson. I especially like the visible layering and heavy paint texture. Also, when I was a kid we used to pass by a slide just like this one each day on the way to school. It looked like a dream... and I always wished we would stop there. By leahgiberson, $50. Quit Your Day Job: danitashop

Danita of Danitashop was able to leave her full time day job after having her daughter. Her Etsy sales gave her the much needed push to take the plunge into selling full time instead of going back to her day job. Danita now enjoys spending her days with her daughter, having the freedom to work full time in a creative way, and is well on her way to being able to completely support herself through Etsy. In the New Year she hopes to sell more original paintings and continue to grow her Etsy business.

When you first started selling on Etsy, did you have dreams or goals of eventually quitting your day job?
When I started selling on Etsy, I first saw it as a new way to expand my online art business. At that time I was selling mostly on eBay and I had a day job that I hated. You see, I'm a visual person, and having to be stuck inside a windowless office during the day doing office related stuff started to take a toll on me. I felt oppressed and I had the urge to look for a career change. Then I got pregnant and my little baby came along. She was the perfect reason to leave my job, as I wanted to spend as much time as possible with her instead of an office. I pledged to succeed with my art and dedicated a great effort to Etsy and my online presence. Luckily for me, the effort has paid off and I'm not looking back!

What was the deciding factor resulting in pursuing Etsy as your full time job?
As I mentioned earlier, the birth of my daughter was a huge turning point on my career. But there were other factors: I started getting lots and lots of hearts; Etsians were sending me encouraging emails; and I was free to create with my style because it was better received here than in other places I sold. All these things encouraged me to make Etsy my main venue for selling my work.

Did you do anything to prepare ahead of time?
Well, I struggled A LOT to convince myself that I was doing the right thing, and that I was going to succeed at it. I used the money from my maternity leave to purchase my own computer and hoped for the best.

What are the most effective ways you have promoted and marketed your Etsy business? What's your best marketing tip?
My blog and Flickr! Since I started posting my blog and my Flickr account, people started following my antics and this generated more traffic for my Etsy store. Giveaways are a great way to keep people interested, as well as constant posting and emails showing off my latest works.

What have you found to be unsuccessful promotion?
Hehehehe... I wish I knew the exact answer to that question. If I ever do, I'll bottle it and will start selling it here on Etsy. What I do know is that if you do not continue to update your Etsy shop, people start wandering off and it's really difficult to pick the momentum again.

Would you walk us through what a typical workday might entail?
I'm a Mom by day, an artist by night.

Typically daytime involves playing with my daughter and taking her to school.
When it's time for her nap I usually answer emails and try to work a bit in my art.
When my husband arrives home from work, he takes care of our daughter and then I can focus on my work, preparing my materials and getting ready to start.
I never know what I'm going to be creating next, I sort of let my inspiration surprise me and hit me.
Once my husband puts our little girl to bed, he helps out printing, packing and preparing the photographs for the next listing. This allows me to keep on creating until the wee hours of the night... Fortunately, I'm a night owl, but I have the deepest circles under my eyes!!!!

What do you enjoy most about not having a day job? Is there anything you miss?
The freedom to do what I feel like doing without having to answer to anyone but myself. It's really nice to be able to decide what I want to do next, and when I want to take a day off or don't feel like working but would rather watch TV or read a book. I don't need to fill out forms or ask for permission with 15 days notice.

What I miss... The human interaction. Unfortunately, this is a lonely job, and I miss chatting with my co-workers about stuff and hearing the latest office news... That's why I love to read emails from customers and have found great friends and communities online that way!

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give yourself, knowing what you know now?
GO FOR IT. It will be worth it and you will kick yourself later for not doing it sooner.

What goals do you wish to accomplish in the coming year?
Grow, grow and grow! I want to position myself as a stronger seller in the original art field. Right now, prints are a best seller, and I really want to be able to sell more originals here on Etsy.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Not much really, just want to wish the best to Etsy, I love this place!!!!

Tis the season to shop on Etsy! And we're not the only ones who think so. Check out this veritable blizzard of stories, starting with this doozy from Good Morning America Weekend. Smart shopping, indeed. My favorite part of that one (aside from the correct pronunciation and spelling of E-T-S-Y-dot-com) is the "Sneaky Santa" graphic. Check it out! Also on the tube, KOMO (ABC) in Seattle and KSL (NBC) in Salt Lake City chimed in too.

Online, this sentiment has been echoed by The Today Show.com, MSNBC, The Wall Street Journal, She Knows, Madison Decider, World Changing, Single Minded Women, and on New University.
