Handmade Portraits: Enhabiten

Liane Tyrell, a.k.a. enhabiten, is interested in handmade marks. Whether they're in paintings, drawings or the stitches she makes on her unique housewares, the patterns and textures of a surface entice her. Liane specializes in pillows using vintage fabrics but has been known to make other domestic wares such as table runners, soft sculptures and embroidered wall hangings. Her rustic pillows are functional, but they also serve as tactile works of art.

Liane makes a point to surround herself with objects beautiful in their age and simplicity, from the furnishings in her fixer-up farmhouse to the fabric she uses for her creations. She believes that old things are imbued with a history and a presence that you cannot discount. Although she started enhabiten using new fabric for her goods, she quickly made the switch to vintage. When not using repurposed vintage fabrics, Liane picks environmentally-friendly materials such as organic cotton, buckwheat hulls and kapok.

Her love of simple things and vintage handmade elements makes each of her one-of-a-kind pieces personal and meaningful. From worn-with-love quilt scraps to delicate embroidery, each enhabiten piece is saturated with a history and thoughtful attention to detail that recall an austere time in the not-so-distant past.

The Great Etsy Office Move of 2009: Our Quiltsy Quilts

Thank you so much to the Quiltsy Team! Last summer, we commissioned this set of custom quilts to spell out "ETSY.COM." It's the first thing people see when they enter our new office, and it doubles as a movable wall for this now very cozy meeting room.

These quilts, like the Etsy community, spell out a big, bold vision. And when you get close up, you see so much distinctive variation in texture and detail.

The quilters also added a label on the back with all of their shop names, so Admin and guests can put a name to the stitching.

Team leaders kimbuktu and Pamelaquilts coordinated the project. Pamelaquilts figured out the pattern and process of the banners, and did the coordinating between all the members who worked on it. kimbuktu encouraged the Team to take on the project, was the mediator between Etsy Admin and the Quiltsy Team, and collected the panels, finished them up, and shipped them on to Etsy.

Pictured here is ForQuiltsSake, who remarked that she didn't have a big enough place in her house to photograph the entire "E" panel!

Teamwork is a beautiful thing, and we can't thank the Quiltsy Team enough for their hard work and craftsmanship.

Quilting for Peace: Stitch Your Own Shopping Bag

Stitch-by-stitch throughout the decades, the art and craft of quilting has long held a quiet power to gather communities together — whether it be through quilting bees, wartime efforts, painstakingly creating heirlooms and gifts, or resourcefully gathering together fabric scraps to mend a garment or create an object of comfort.

Katherine Bell's new book, Quilting for Peace, explores the the stories, social causes, and common threads of making the world a better place one thoughtful stitch at a time. She also includes a plethora of projects and inspiration for reclaiming peace and meaning in our world, using your own two hands and a few basic craft supplies. Below Katherine Bell has generously shared with us the 30 Minute Shopping Bag project from her book.

Project: 30 Minute Shopping Bag

Use recycled fabric or leftover scraps from quilting projects to make this bag extra
eco-friendly. If you want to use small scraps of fabric, read the patchwork instructions at the end of the pattern. Double seams make the bag more durable for heavy groceries, giving it a longer life.

Finished Size:
Approximately 15 4/4" z 16 3/4"

What You'll Need:
- 3/4 yard of 44 inch wide quilting or home decorating weight cotton (preferably recycled)
- Knitting needle or chopstick
- Matching cotton thread

Sewing Instructions:

1. Cut two 18-inch x 20-inch pieces of fabric for the front and back of the shopping bag, and two 18-inch x 4-inch strips for the handles.

2. Fold and press a 1/2-inch hem on one long edge of one handle strip. Fold and press a 1-inch hem on the opposite long edge of this handle strip. Fold and press the side with the narrow hem so it overlaps the side with the wide hem by 1/2 inch (see Diagram A).

3. Edge-stitch the edge of the overlapped hem, and then topstitch 1/4 inch on either side of the ﬁrst seam.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to make the second handle.

5. Working with one of the 18-inch x 20-inch rectangles, fold and press to the wrong side a 1/2-inch hem on one short end. Fold and press this hem edge another 1 1/2 inches to the wrong side. Next position each end of one handle 4 1/2 inches from each side edge of the rectangle and tuck the handle ends under the double-folded hem, snugging them to the base of the hem (the handle will now face into the center of the rectangle), as shown in Diagram B.

Pin the double-folded hem and handle ends in place, and edge-stitch as close to the edge of the hem as you can, taking out the pins as you come to them. Fold the handle up over the hem, and press it in place (see Diagram C).

6. Topstitch a box with an X inside it on each end of the handle, covering the bag’s hem (see Diagram D).

7. Repeat steps 2-6 with the second fabric rectangle and handle.

8. Place the bag’s two sides with wrong sides together and the edges aligned. Sew a 1/4-inch seam along both sides and the boom of the bag, backstitching at the beginning and end of the seam to secure it. Turn the bag wrong side out, using a knitting needle or chopstick to gently push the corners fully out. Press the bag’s edges, and, with a 1/2-inch seam, sew around the three closed sides, again backstitching at the beginning and end of your stitching. Trim any loose threads, turn the bag right side out, and press it again.

Patchwork variation:
Piece together strips or scraps of fabric, and trim your patchwork to create the two -inch x -inch rectangles. Then follow steps 1-8 above to make your shopping bag

Three years ago, Alice Saunders, a.k.a. Forestbound, and Francesca Zmetra, a.k.a. Thirteen Eighty-Five, (who's also responsible for the delightful blog, The Snail and The Cyclops) became roommates in an old house in Jamaica Plain, MA. They didn't know each other at the time but because of their similar styles, they bonded instantly and became close as friends and creative colleagues. Alice's aesthetic tends toward old military Americana with a collection of canvas bags, found bones, birch bark, vintage lace and postcards. Francesca's taste is more feminine, influenced by wartime beauty parlors and apothecaries. These friends share a studio space and each have their own bedroom along with four other roommates in this old Victorian in an artsy neighborhood of Boston. Both Alice and Francesca keep up with modern technology though their Internet businesses, blog, and Flickr sites, but their work and decor are nostalgic for things past: ephemera, vintage wares and trinkets with character.

Etsy Finds Decor: Crafting a Cozy Studio

This weekend's Get the Look: Decor was found while browsing through the Etsy Open Studios flickr pool. Manda's lovely studio space, colorful collection of fabrics and tidy, well organized supplies really stood out. Her UK studio is filled with inspiring fabric swatches, artwork, books and magazines that make working from home look both relaxing and enjoyable.

Manda says she discovered her love for textiles while expecting her first daughter. Her interest in traditional quilting techniques led to the creation of her blog, Tree Fall Design, where she talks about the joys of crafting, decorating, and raising a family in an eco-friendly manner. Manda also runs a successful Etsy shop at manda.etsy.com, where she sells quilts, soft toys and home accessories made from natural linens and printed cottons.

(Hippie) Handmade Weddings: Circa 1972, Baby!

Growing up, I always had a flair for the theatrical. I think I inherited this inclination from my awesome hippie parents. You see, my parents’ 1972 Hippie Wedding is a thing of legend in the small town of Alameda, California.

New in town, they posted signs on telephones poles inviting the town-folk to attend their “no-hoopla wedding.” The ceremony was held in a small, tree-shaded park across the street from their apartment. They expected 50-odd guests, but attracted crowds in the hundreds. Some musicians walking by set up on a stage and jammed into the wee hours. My Dad's co-workers surprised him by pulling up in a converted school bus turned hippie love bus filled with libations.

I have heard the legend and have admired the terribly groovy photos, but the elements I treasure most from their big day are the handmade ones. My Mom recently brought over my Dad's handmade wedding vest and her vintage bridal shoes, so I could admire their handiwork.

My Dad, the ZZ-Top looking fella', was "just not into suits" and asked if my Mom would make him a "groovy" wedding vest.

"He actually joked that the wedding would be called off if I didn't make him one," my Mom recalls.

"I had just started to crazy quilt at the time and decided to go patchwork for his vest. I handembroidered around each patch, and in the centers of some on the backside, I embroidered your father's initials. We found a pink paisley shirt at the Five & Dime, and I made him a pair of red velvet arm garters to finish off the look."

My Mom and her bridesmaids decided to make their gowns from simple, store-bought patterns.

"We decided to make our gowns because we were on a budget. Back then, you would have to go to a fancy boutique or department store to find a gown. I found them to be very intimidating and impersonal."

"I chose ivory brocade, which was a bit rebellious at the time. In Chinese culture it is traditional to wear a red gown for good luck. I figured since there was nothing traditional about our wedding, I would buck the 'old ways' and wear what I liked. I wore my red dress in our engagement photos instead, which made your grandfather happy..."

Of course, no wedding day would be complete without something old.

"We found my vintage (now antique) bridal shoes at a small mom & pop shop during a road trip to Monterey. They were wrapped in their original packaging materials and were in pristine condition. I really loved the silk embroidery and the bright colors, a lot of work went into them. They were the perfect finishing touch on my perfect 'no-hoopla' wedding ensemble." I would agree.

My parents celebrated their 36th Wedding Anniversary in October.

Hi, we're Aranzi Aronzo. This book teaches you how to make things you'll need for your baby. Well, maybe your baby won't really need them, but they're things that might be fun to have. Pregnancy is a magical time unlike any other. Having a baby is hard work but there will also be plenty of things that warm your heart. Each day is like a fun adventure. Make the things in this book while thinking of your baby, your relative's baby or even your friend's baby.

How-Tuesday: Patchwork Style Pot Holders

Sneak peek alert! Patchwork Style hits the shelves April 14th, but we're happy to share one of the many beautiful projects found within its pages early. Download the complete project instructions here or follow along below, courtesy of Patchwork Style by Suzuko Koseki.

There are two kinds of patchwork items: the kind that can take you hours of painstaking hand-piecing, and the kind that you can make quickly and easily with a sewing machine. Either one can be extremely attractive.

It feels more natural to use the same pot holders for a long time, but now I can't bring myself to get rid of these! If you're going to use an item every day, you might as well have fun making it.

Materials for Pot Holder A
Fabric scraps for collage (solids, prints; the patterns and colors are up to you)
Fabric for front and lining (linen): 11 7/8" x 7 7/8"
Quilt batting: 17 3/4" x 7 7/8"
Ribbon: 3/4" wide x 3" long

Materials for Pot Holder B
Fabric scraps for collage (prints, velveteen; the patterns and colors are up to you)
Fabric for front and lining (felt): 13 3/4" x 5 5/8"
Quilt batting: 13 3/4" x 5 1/8"
Hemp cord: 7 1/2" long

Materials for Pot Holder C
Decorative patch (I)
Fabric for front (felt): 5 7/8" x 5 7/8"
Quilt batting: 15 3/4" x 5 7/8"
Cotton thread (red)

Materials for Pot Holder D
Fabric scraps for collage (prints, felt, ribbon; the patterns and colors are up to you)
Fabric for front (felt): 7 7/8" x 5 7/8"
Fabric for back (linen): 7 7/8" x 5 7/8"
Quilt batting: 17 3/4" x 7 7/8"
Bias tape: 1/4" wide x 4 3/4" long

Instructions

1. For all pot holders, place the top fabric on three layers of quilt batting. For pot holders A, B, and C, position fabric patches and stitch them to the top and batting layers according to the diagrams. Free stitch additional lines through all three layers according to the diagrams.

For pot holder D, cut out the fabric flower pieces using the template. Place the flower on the top fabric and stitch around the outline of the flower to secure in place. For the flower center, cut a piece of felt and affix it using spiral stitches. Sew the ribbon and patches in place according to the diagram. See Figure 1.

2. For all pot holders, place the front piece on the back fabric, wrong sides together, and sew zigzag and straight stitches around the edges. Make the loops from the specified materials and sew them on as shown. See Figure 2.

Etsy Finds Decor: Into the Woods with Forestbound

This weekend's Get the Look: Decor is inspired by the rustic Massachusetts home of Etsy seller Alice Saunders of ForestBound. She explains her distinctive decorating style as "very similar to my crafting aesthetic – traditionally inspired and rustic, but with modern sensibilities."

Alice shops almost exclusively at flea markets, barn sales and antique shops. She says, "I don’t like to buy new items, especially for decorating my space. I’d rather reuse unique pieces that I happen to stumble across. The table that I do all my sewing on for ForestBound is actually an old door that my roommate and I found behind a building a few months ago – I just attached some old table stands that I found at a flea market and it become a sturdy work table! But when I’m looking for art to hang on the walls I always turn to Etsy or other similar sites..."

Alice is inspired by "rustic, woodsy cabins and everything that goes with them – inside and out, but also by people who build their own homes from completely found materials, by the incredible work of J. Morgan Puett, and by beautiful homes that I come across via various websites such as The Selby (specifically the homes of Meryl Smith, Jean & Sam Buffa and Michelle & Tracy Mccormick)."

This week's Guest Curator is artist, writer and curator Sabrina Gschwandtner. Sabrina's work bridges the fields of conceptual art, handcraft, activism and social history. Her book KnitKnit: Profiles and Project’s from Knitting’s New Wave was published by Stewart, Tabori and Chang in 2007; the audio version was just published by Knitting Out Loud. Sabrina served as Artist Consultant for the Museum of Arts and Design’s “Radical Lace and Subversive Knitting” exhibition, and is currently an artist-in-residence on the 6th floor of the museum’s new building on Columbus Circle in New York. Visit her there from 11am to 6pm any Thursday between now and April 23rd, 2009.

With New Year's resolutions on the horizon, the motivation for craftivism projects should push you over the edge. Below you'll find some inspiration to get crafty and give back. Do you have an idea? Etsian cloudery told us about her inspiration for starting a new all charity shop:

"I've been running cMaille for a little over a year. I decided to open Cloudery specifically as a way to give back. I have a dedicated charity that I donate to — FirstBook.org. First Book is (from their website) 'a nonprofit organization with a single mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. We provide an ongoing supply of new books to children participating in community-based mentoring, tutoring, and family literacy programs.'"

Sometimes I look at my growing stash and wonder what I’ll ever make with it all. Despite choosing all of the yarns myself (or at least letting them in my house), some of them just don’t feel like 'me' or there’s very little left of them. Sometimes, I look at all of that yarn and just know that I don’t actually *need* anything crocheted for a while, but I still feel like making something. I’m sure we’ve all been there.

Next time you’re in a crochet rut and just want to start something, why not crochet for charity? It’s a great way to use up all the loose ends, try a new pattern, plus help save the world. If you don’t already have a favorite charity, check out some of these links for some suggestions.

As far as what you’ll be making, many yarn companies offer free patterns on their sites specifically for charitable causes, so check your favorites. Here’s a roundup of charity patterns by Lion Brand. And Bev’s Country Cottage has compiled a huge list of patterns in both knit and crochet—just scroll down past the featured pattern to the 'Click for Bev's Pattern Pages' menu.

And if that doesn't suit you, you could always sell your items or your own original patterns on Etsy and donate the proceeds to a worthy cause of your choice, as these crocheters are doing. Or you know, just support them by using their patterns. Your karma will thank you, and so will your stash."

Shocking, right? Fabric is meant to be hoarded, right? But honestly, though those old pastel celestial prints might be useful for insulating my house or making my fridge run more efficiently, I am so over the stars thing and I am never going to use this stuff.

My local quilt guild takes donations of kid-friendly and soldier-friendly fabrics for various community service projects, but what if you don’t have a guild nearby? And more importantly, is there anything I can do to find a new life for the perfectly good yarn that I often see abandoned in thrift stores and at garage sales?

Here are five organizations that accept donations of craft supplies...

If you’re going to donate supplies, please be thoughtful and make sure what you’re donating is appropriate. Someone in our guild once donated vinyl to the baby quilts project… um, ok… thanks, I guess…

The CUREchief Foundation provides scarves to people with cancer, alopecia, and other conditions which may cause hair loss. These CUREchiefs can be worn on the head, or around the neck. They accept donations of cotton, flannel, and polar fleece for their volunteers to use in making CUREchiefs. For their address, see their Volunteer Page.

Care Wear Volunteers has volunteers nationwide who make and donate handmade baby items to hospitals. Founder Bonnie Hagerman sent me this information about what they need: Care Wear Volunteers appreciates receiving donated yarn, fiberfil, quilt batting, narrow white lace, flannel, broadcloth, and other fabrics suitable for children’s toys, apparel, and blankets/quilts. Donated supplies will be distributed to volunteers who request assistance with their projects that are donated to hospitalized children. Contact: Bonnie Hagerman, Care Wear Volunteers, c/o Hood College, 401 Rosemont Avenue, Frederick, MD 21701

Members of the Charity Craft Volunteer Network in Central Texas craft to help infants, children, breast cancer patients, elders with Alzheimer’s, patients in hospice, and others. They can use fabric, yarn, fiberfill, batting, and thread. You can see the types of items they make. Their Donate Page has the address.

Newborns In Need focuses on helping needy families clothe their babies and keep them warm by providing clothing and blankets to families taking their infants home from the hospital. Appropriate donations of fabric, sewing notions, and patterns are welcome. Donations may be sent to Newborns in Need National Office, 3323 Transou Road, Pfafftown, NC 27040.

You can contact the local chapter coordinator for the Project Linus nearest you to find out whether they need fabric for making kids’ blankets. 'Materials must be new, unused and free of contaminants such as mold, mildew and smoke. They should be cotton or cotton/poly blends.'

The Preemie Project has chapters in Iowa and Michigan that make items for the NICU, PICU, and infant bereavement programs. Their Donate Page is up to date with needed supplies, including flannel, fleece, thread, ribbon, and lace."

Beadgirl on Craftster.org had this to share:

"There are lots of local places that would love to have your un-wanted/un-needed craft supplies! Here are some suggestions on where to check: local schools, retirement centers, boys & girls clubs, day care centers, churches etc...

But if you still can't find anyone to donate your crafty stuff to, here is a list of organizations that need or can use craft supplies.

If you know of any more just post it here and I'll add it to the list!"

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital - Pick a craft, collect supplies, write out instructions and place everything in a zip loc bag. Crafts are given to patients and adults of all ages through the Happy Cart. Supplies you should avoid: play dough, live feathers, leaves, moss, dirt, glitter, and any food products like pasta or beans.

The Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery - Bubbles, Pencil cases, Paint, Arts and Crafts supplies - A refuge for young children at risk of abuse and neglect, and a source of support for their parents.

Day of Art - All craft supplies - Assist organizations that aid the elderly, homeless, disabled and at-risk youth by providing informal social and developmental instruction through means of arts and crafts.

Featured Buyer: Jay McCarroll

This week’s Featured Buyer is Jay McCarroll, fashion designer and winner of the first season of Project Runway, and now, fabric designer. Read on to find out what inspired Jay to pursue a life of creating, and check out his Etsy Christmas list below!

I was born in a little town in Pennsylvania in 1974. I was the last of six children. My father made septic tanks. My mother had a delicious hall closet stocked with remnants of fabrics and tins of buttons and bags of yarn. This was my favorite place in the house. My sisters were in the high school marching band and my brother was on the football team. I made myself costumes and twirled batons in the front yard. I suppose this is where it all started.

From my very early memories of watching my father sharpen pencils with a knife and my mother crocheting afghans, I have always been fascinated by what people are able to accomplish with their hands. It's so organic and natural and beautiful and goes back to the very beginnings of time.

I made everything with my hands for the first 15 years of my career, and it is the one thing that brings me the most joy and satisfaction to this day. Sure, it's gratifying to see hundreds of something I've designed with a label with my name in it, but it's really special to see a one-of-a-kind item that my very hands have created.

TITLE OF COLLECTION: ARBITRARY TRINKETRY

I really tried to come up with a common theme for my picks... but there's like a trillion and a half amazing items on Etsy! If I went with an all green-y, organic-y theme, I would be neglecting my super-poppy plastic friends, and if i went with an all red theme, I would be neglecting my awesome pukey-yellow friends. In the end, the commonality is the personality I found in each item; either the seller or the work itself. ...Oh and color! I am very simple that way: great color is a deal-maker or breaker for me.

Fresh Shops: transitantenna

I was recently given the heads up on a very interesting new shop. Though TransitAntenna has only been on Etsy for a few months thus far (one sale and counting!), this Fresh Shop has a pretty interesting story.

You see, this shop has decided to take the "road less traveled." After leaving their homes in South Carolina less than a year ago, this group has been living life as a continual road trip in an eco-friendly converted bus. As they roam the highways and small towns of the United States, they've somehow found the time to start an Etsy shop with really awesome bags and purses inspired by their journeys.

Here's a little interview we did with this Fresh Shop.

Can you tell us a little about the people behind TransitAntenna?
TransitAntenna is a collective of artists, writers, craftsmen, and film makers, traveling and living on the roadways of North America in an old city transit bus converted to run on waste vegetable oil. We (Seth, Jamie, my husband Bob, my son Taylor, and myself) left Charleston, South Carolina eight months ago on a two year journey to see the country.

I am a trained baker and cake decorator, but taught myself how to use a sewing machine about a year ago and began making handbags for myself and friends. My husband Bob went to school for painting and print-making, and we decided to team up to make functional works of art. All the items that we create are hand screen-printed by Bob and sewn by myself on our bus while on the road.

What inspires you as a creative person?
We are inspired by the towns that we travel through and the local culture and flare that is unique to each. We enjoy working with shapes and patterns and lately have been consumed with neon and glow in the dark. Most of the items that we have made recently were inspired by an exhibit on Amish Quilts showing in Denver, Colorado when we were passing through. Living on the road provides challenges such as finding locations to park a 40 ft. bus, finding restaurants to get vegetable oil from and home schooling my son. These challenges can make it difficult to work on our projects on a daily basis, but you can expect to see some fun and exciting items from us throughout the next couple of years.

How do you like Etsy so far? What are your favorite features of the site?
I love all the cool stuff on Etsy that are just my style! Being a part of Etsy offers me the opportunity to be part of a community of people with common creative interests without having to physically be in one location.

High End Etsy: Fiber Arts

What does one gain from raising one's own alpacas? Bonnie Samuel aka bonniesamueldesign.etsy.com knows the value of homegrown fiber, the material she works with to create unique knit and woven pieces. "My knowledge of the nature and structure of natural fibers — from the impact of animal husbandry on quality production to the end product — gives me a unique understanding of certain fibers in design." But it's not just the intimate knowledge of raising animals — she has also trained in how to sort and grade her annual clip. "Working with natural fibers brings the beauty of nature's palette and textures to your work."

Bonnie approached Etsy's blog, the Storque, with her story and with those of other high-end fiber artists on Etsy. These artisans steep their fibers in their deep skill and knowledge, and their high-end items' price points reflect that. We invited them to explain what's behind the drape of a sumptuously woven shawl or the details of a painstakingly crocheted art necklace.

Etsy offers a grand opportunity to both emerging and established fiber artisans. Since its inception, Etsy has evolved through layers of quality each in turn attracting buyers at the emerging level.

Truly talented fiber artists – weavers, dyers, textile designers, skilled knitters, art quilters and those reviving traditional fiber crafts in new dimensions – are now establishing shops on Etsy. The traditional “art” market is out of reach for many artists because of costs to enter the market of galleries, agents and promotion, while Etsy, however, offers wide internet exposure for little cost. Indeed, this trend may be changing the way art is marketed and sold as Etsy increasingly becomes the place to find and purchase unique and finely crafted, high quality art pieces in many mediums.

We’ve chosen just a few fiber artisans of the many talented on Etsy to showcase here...

Hedda Vatter aka HeddaVatter, who lives in Rapina, Estonia, creates wearable beauty in crochet.

As a romantic, I love crocheting and lace. I learned to crochet in school when I was eight years old. My favorite materials are high quality cotton crochet thread, linen and worsted for the woolen lace.

I am inspired by Irish lace in all of its richness and beauty. I try to bring the elements of the old lace into modern day using the lace for accessories and jewelry. I also add beads to Irish lace which makes it even more gorgeous. I have added felt, Irish lace and mond stones to my jewelry – the result is an interesting contrast. Red mélange crocheted necklace (pictured above) is inspired by Irish lace. The cotton thread is hand dyed, making the necklace unique.

As I was studying in art school, textile was my favourite subject. After graduating, I studied three years of calligraphy and two years of decorating. I acquired my higher education in library science. Most of my life I have worked as an artist. The last three years I have worked as a self-employed entrepreneur/artist. I have sold my work in Finland, Sweden, Italy, Germany and in France. And of course, I have made handcrafts for myself, my three children and for my home.

Scarfguy on Etsy is Fred Ullom, who is an accomplished weaver from Ohio.

As a career mathematician and computer scientist, my initial interest in weaving was as a science. It is, after all, an exercise in applied binary mathematics. When you look closely, all cloth is "pixelated". Beginning as a diversion from the stress of a high-tech career, I soon discovered that creating something tangible with my hands was much more rewarding than the abstraction of creating lines of programming code. There is no greater enjoyment than to take an idea and turn it into something real: a piece of cloth, a scarf, a garment that stands on its own, and provides warmth, softness, and pleasure for its owner. Unlike most fiber "artists", who are artists first, my greatest struggle has been to allow my creativity to flourish. I retired early from the high-tech world and now weave full-time (although at a leisurely pace). I don't often take inspiration from my surrounding as many do.

My structures are usually just mathematical "play" with twill progressions. My color combinations are usually spontaneously sparked by fondling through my yarn inventory. I have a passion for exotic natural fibers. I'm always searching for the finest Merino wools, cashmere, silk, yak, and the elusive arctic muskox (qiviut).

Artmixter is Marion Barnett’s shop on Etsy, which features imaginative fabric art.

I am Marion Barnett, a Scottish artist living and working in Norfolk, England. In creating my art quilts and other fiber works, I work predominantly with lutradur, a non woven polyester fabric that is versatile and easy to use. I even wrote a book about it, 'Lovely Lutradur', with Dijanne Cevaal. I have a passion for layers and texture; as lutradur is semi transparent, it is an ideal medium for such work. Most of my work has pattern and texture combined over several layers of cloth, with some areas of cloth cut back to show clearly what is lying underneath. Colour, too, is an essential part of my art; I dye or paint much of my own cloth, cottons, silks and lutradur, and use a wide range of paints to get the effects I want. It’s very rewarding when people are drawn to touch the work; textiles are a very tactile medium, and I encourages people to pat and stroke the cloth and the finished works.

Rebecca Burgess' fiber art and skills fulfill a mission. Her Etsy shop is ecologicalartist.

My work, my passion, lives within the relationship between restoration ecology and sustainable art materials. I seek to create art whose strength lies within its process: a process that is restorative for the native plants that I harvest for dyes, for the women ranchers I buy my wool from, and is, most importantly, restorative for me as the composer and creator. I use local natural resources in a manner that supports the thriving and regenerative cycles of those resources. The end product is equally important for me, in its quality, attention to detail, and how well it functions.

I envision a growing world of artisans and interested folks, making beautiful art from naturally dyed yarns and batts, and wearing naturally dyed organic clothes. As this happens, our culture will become both aesthetically and ecologically richer. While I enjoy the larger vision, I personally am restored by the feel of soft angora moving through my hands and onto the spinning wheel, or counting my warp threads in preparation for my loom. The value of having one more happy and restored person on the planet is an immeasurable gift in itself.

designbynihan is the Etsy shop of Nihan Altuntas, a very creative designer and handknitter from Istanbul, Turkey.

I’m Nihan Altuntas, a 27 year old Turkish woman, whose passion is creating and designing. I’ve been crafting since I was old enough to pick up a crayon. My favorite childhood toys were boxes, yarns, pieces of cloth and all kinds of paints… I should add that I’m thankful for the support of my family. When I converted my jeans into bags or painted my canvas shoes, they never said a word!

I majored in cinema studies with a minor in marketing. During college, I got back to knitting to relax and to express myself. I never liked pattern books or reproducing brand sweaters. I would design authentic knitwear by improvising with needles, sometimes not even knowing what the result would be. The appreciation and approval for all of that hard work is the basis of my motivation to improve myself in this field.

I’m inspired by almost everything, even a simple button. I can suddenly decide to knit a sweater suitable for that button. My favorite material is cashmere, but the most important thing is to be able to discover the perfect match of the yarn and the pattern.

“Design by Nihan’s” success on Etsy is a combination of my talent, marketing and business knowledge and my personality too. I try to bring customer preferences and original patterns together. All “Design by Nihan” customers have an opportunity to choose the color and material, since all of the products are always knitted according to the customers' measurements. Each item is totally unique to its owner.

Dottie Scher, aka ccdzs, whose excellent crochet skill reflects her heritage.

My mother was an old fashioned Southern Lady who taught me the age old art of handcrafts as we were growing up. I started knitting when I was five and needlepoint, embroidery, tatting, pottery, sewing soon followed. When I was 15 I found a book of crochet motifs and I was hooked, literally. I love the way the work flows and how quickly something can come together in my hands. This is an art that has been passed down through the generations of my family.

I work "during the day" as a Child Protective Services In Home Services/Foster Care Supervisor. My days are long and quite hectic. When I get home, after homework, supper, baths and smaller people's bedtime, I can sit down with a hook and thread and just shut out everything else. Crochet is my refuge, my special place where everything is simply the hook, the yarn or thread, the colors, the texture.

When I'm designing my own patterns, it's all about texture and counting stitches. The doilies are designed with their appearance from a distance in mind. So much of the design is not apparent unless you look at it from across a room or down a hallway. I love the symmetry and the geometrical design. I have been heavily influenced by Patricia Kristoffersen, a renowned crochet artist. Many of my framed pieces are based on her designs. But I also feel I learn from anyone's designs and thus can bring my own ideas to bear, such as my two nautical sunbursts.

Constance Rose aka constancerosedesigns

I have been a textile artist since the early 1970s. Prior to becoming a weaver, I was a custom clothing designer, silk painter, papermaker, beaded jewelry designer, knitter, crocheter and handspinner. I've had a lifelong interest in fabric and thread/yarn, so I've explored any number of ways to create them and work with them. I started college as an art major, then veered into and graduated in psychology. Making art, although my first love, was always something "else" to do; that is, until I retired, recently, from the work world as we know it to focus on my art. Although I've taken an art class here and there over the years, essentially I am self taught, propelling myself toward whatever felt like the next technique for me to learn.

I've always been inspired by nature, as well as art of other times and places — including the florescence of Art Nouveau and Victoriana, the stylized and repetitive geometrics of Art Deco and ancient Egyptian designs, Native American and ethnic tribal patterns, and the Arts & Crafts and Craftsman styles in functional and decorative arts and architecture. My recent work creating woven shibori has been a way for me to pull together all of these design genre.

My work today is about TEXTURE — the tactility of cloth and fiber surfaces, what textiles feel like in your hands, as well as visual texture, the orchestration of patterns and colors that your eyes see. My work is also about PATTERN — line, shape, form, and directionality inherent in the woven cloth or imprinted or dyed onto the fabric. And it is about COLOR — how color lays on or becomes part of the cloth, how colors interact together, the patterns that areas of color create on a piece. My textiles explore the fusion of these components on handwoven fiber structures. Most recently I have begun creating Art Cloth — non-wearable fabric, wall and space hangings — combining loom-controlled and handstitched shibori, and surface design techniques on handwoven fabrics.

Hi, I'm Beverly of beachyrustica, Team Leader of EtsyPatrons. Our team began, as many do, with a Forum thread and an idea. One of our soon-to-be members started a discussion encouraging the Etsy community to "Make Someone's Day" by purchasing from a new Etsian and telling everyone what they'd found. Many "days were made," and several of us took up the cause and formed a team: except instead of aligning for the purpose of selling, we united as a team of buyers. During our work as EtsyPatrons, those of us who are also Etsy shop owners take off our seller hats and join with our buyer-only teammates to purchase from and promote the shops of others. I think it is safe to say that we are the only non-self promotional team on Etsy.

Our current projects include the continuation of Have You Made Someone's Day, our weekly effort to promote new shops within the Etsy Forums; members also select their favorite new items and give them greater exposure by curating and promoting an Etsy Treasury; starting and hosting a Buyer's thread within the Forums; blogging at EtsyPatrons.blogspot.com, as well as writing about our favorite shops for the blogs of others; maintaining an EtsyPatrons EtsyMini of our favorites that shows up across the web, and many other projects. Members are encouraged to initiate their own projects to make buying on Etsy a team effort!

The pieces below were submitted by individual members and then voted on by the team. We wanted to highlight some of Etsy's newest artists, while showing off the excellent quality and creativity of handmade work that buyers come to Etsy to find, as well as some of the great vintage pieces available on the site.

Maru of Wiremeup found this gorgeous art quilt, created by ModernQuilts. "Both the commanding colors used and the detailed hand stitchery of the words, 'whole, wholly, holy' and 'whole cloth, of the cloth and man of the cloth,' swirling about this exceptional art quilt made of a single piece of fabric, is wholly beyond the words stitched onto the quilt itself."

Zebras in the Room by audreyart was selected by EP's Treasury Director, Glenna of VintageEmbellishment. She says, "I love this print. The little redheaded girl reminds me of my granddaughter, who at 5 years old is learning all about the 'love of reading' and the joy it brings."

This Cosmos Rectangular Zip Pouch by misscakedesign was the selection of Maisy, aka maisyh. "Not only does it combine two of my favorite colors — lavender and lime — but this is a pouch that will not get lost at the bottom of your tote! I particularly love the way misscake has machine appliquéd her own design into the material to give the combination yet more individuality. This pouch has wide appeal: practical, stylish, feminine, and edgy."

"The fullness and beauty of each woman in this powerfully brilliant painting is in the fact that they are faceless. Though they are faceless, they express a vibrant image, each with their own personality," commented Maru of Wiremeup, who discovered this work by Krystyna81 entitled It's Not About You.

These charming, handpainted wooden chairs by pamdesign were chosen by Jen of Jemjoop. "I really love these handpainted chairs! There is something to be said for functional art you can actually use around your home. They put a beautiful spin on recycling!"

Even the title of this piece is appealing. The Peek-A-Boo Fairy Art Card ACEO was created by ArtSlings1946 and discovered by Linda of Peppercorns2. She says, "I love the beautiful artistry and imagination of this mini art treasure."

Nest was the choice of Jen, aka Jemjoop. "Larkjewelrydesigns handcrafted this wonderful silver nest necklace in tourmaline, ruby, and garnet. I like it for its originality and skillful design. A really unique piece for your jewelry box."

"I love anything orange and pink, which is probably why this fabulous tangerine orange and lavender fabric bowl by sewdivine caught my eye! For me, the appeal is in the luxurious clashing colors, the genius construction, and the fact that everyone needs a good bowl to throw their keys and cell phone into when they get home," says maisyh.

Our star shopper discovered Butterflies, an 8x10 photograph by katieelizabethphoto. Maru of Wiremeup summed up her selection of this piece as such: "What caught my imagination were the butterflies fluttering about from this young woman's stomach, as if she was embarking on a passage of womanhood or perhaps the anticipation of a honeymoon. So excited of what is to come: butterflies of oh so perfect days full of excitement."

I ran across this fun archival print, Retro Shopper with Companion by sandyklotter, and chose it as the lead in to this article because it evokes the exact feeling that makes us Etsypatrons: sharing the fun of shopping on Etsy!

Handmade Kids: Buying Local with the EtsyKids Team

The EtsyKids Team is a group of Etsy sellers who have self-organized to help each other spread the word about their great items for young ones. The group has recently grown so large — with teams from around the world — that they've been able to cluster groups of sellers by region. What does this mean for shoppers? A new, convenient way to shop local for kid's items on Etsy.

People always say that having a baby will change your life. I now know firsthand that it indeed does, but in ways much deeper than what most people talk about. Yes, I now have the padded living room with toys strewn about the floor, my vocabulary now includes complex words such as "da" and "ba" and "na," and bits of food have turned up in places I never would have imagined.

These changes are nothing compared to the changes that have happened within me. Now that I am a parent, I see the world in a whole new light, and I want to do everything I can to help make the world a better place for this future generation. So, I could buy things that were mass-produced in a factory with poor working conditions halfway across the world, or I could buy local, helping both the economy and the environment. I could purchase an item from a giant box store where there are fifty other items exactly like it, or I could buy handmade and get something really unique, often even personalized.

You get the idea. So I'm starting to shift my purchasing power, and I'm giving my support more and more to independent and local businesses. Etsy is wonderful for that. When people think of shopping online, often times it's assumed that you'll be getting something from far away, but with so many shops on Etsy now, you will more than likely be able to find a wealth of items from shops in your area. I've taken this idea and applied it to the EtsyKids Team, for which I am the leader. We are a very large global team, and we have recently created regional groups within the team. A few summers ago my sister talked me into going to an antique event called, A Day in the Country. I believe she read about it in Mary Englebreit's Home Companion.
