Eloise aka HidenSeek is a renowned Bear hugger, a relentless cake-topping dismantler, an involuntarily plant killer and an amateur fairytale weaver. We invited her to curate this Shop Local guide, UK edition. Meet some artists below and match them to their items at the bottom.

So here I am Etsy! You found me... :) Where one can usually find me and that's deep in the forests of the North of England looking for inspiration or just playing carefree with all the forest creatures. Here is a rare but precious peaceful moment of me and Mr. Bear in a quiet little spot where we sometimes sit on that bench enjoying the running water, the crunching of the leaves and pushing little bugs out of our noses.

I say rare because it was one of those times that everything went truly as planned, but you have to believe me, not all times between us are as “human girl and bear very wild” co-operative!! My slightly unnerved look can prove it...Actually a few moments later... Ohh... small children may be reading... so.... everything went great :D

I think the argument started at the point where we were talking about this Shop Local gift guide... different approaches you see. Mr. Bear was thinking again with the big cavity between his head and feet (meaning his stomach rather than anything else). UK has some fine hard working bees don't get me wrong, but featuring all the honey products on Etsy just wouldn't do.

And since between the two of us only I can type, I get to pick my most dreamy gifts for a special fairytale Christmas this year!! Sorry Mr. Bear....."democratic" meritocracy wins! So enjoy some wonderful, talented artists from around the UK and their amazing handmade goodies that would make the perfect Christmas gifts.

"The picture was taken outside my tiny shop called For England and St. George which is situated in The Fishmarket in Northampton (United Kingdom) by a local photographer called Phil Sharp - he has photographed the great and the good including Patti Smith and Juliet Lewis amongst others. The Fishmarket has been converted into a huge contemporary artspace/gallery. It opens 3 days a week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. This is one of my most favourite places in Northampton as it is really my playground and most of my friends also run shops there - it is crammed full of local talent. This magical place enables me to take a break from my busy studio and connect with my fabulous customers. I also organize a craft fair there once a month for 50 designer/makers with my friend Bill which is incredibly popular attracting over 900+ people through the doors. Cool Britannia!"

This beautiful Gothic Cathedral is 900 years old and I love spending my time around the Cathedral particularly in the Spring time when the first blooms are on the trees in the grounds. It is very peaceful and romantic around the Cathedral and I find it very inspiring. I also enjoy walking along the small cobbled streets behind the Cathedral that are lined by medieval houses, including the house where Jane Austen spent the last part of her life."

Although this was uttered many years ago by a pitcher for the Dodgers, I think it still rings true today for many Brooklynites, and definitely for those who consider themselves part of the local DIY scene. We inhabit a rapidly developing part of New York City, and while some are wary of the changes, the creativity and number of artists living and working in all parts of Brooklyn is downright impressive, inspiring and exhilarating.

My Etsy shop was born 2 years ago right here in Brooklyn, and even though it's a virtual shopping experience, it isn't without a personal touch — many of my buyers tell me cute stories and inside jokes about their purchases. My favorite came from someone just a few neighborhoods over from me, truly a "Shop Local" story: she bought one of my smiling crochet s'mores for her 4-year old son, who was overjoyed at the sight of the plush and promptly named it "Fred."

They took Fred out to the Promenade, a beautiful walkway in Brooklyn with a view of the Manhattan skyline, because he wanted "to show Fred the Empire State Building." Imagine this small child, facing the glistening lights of New York skyscrapers, holding up the soft s'more in his hands! When she told me this story, I felt so happy to be part of this "little bubble." Even though I will meet very few of my customers, we are "all part of one big, but very close family."

Gift Ideas: Shop Local North & South Carolinas with Shellieartist

We invited Shellieartist to curate a collection for our blog's Shop Local series, North Carolina and South Carolina edition.

I grew up in Charlotte, NC but moved 30 minutes south to the charming and historic Lancaster, SC (lān-kŭs'tər) about 2½ years ago when I was pregnant with my son. When we first moved out here, it felt as though we were in the middle of nowhere. Although beautiful, it took some adjusting to feel comfortable. There are no bowling allies, movie theaters or book stores, but we have grown to love the quaintness that is the “Red Rose” city of Lancaster. We are lucky in many ways, with deer always roaming about our yard and the Andrew Jackson State park down the street. Therefore, we'll call it home here for many years to come.

My favorite thing about growing up in North and South Carolina is the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains on one side, and the Atlantic coast on the other. We have always been just a few hours from both, and many states do not have that luxury. Enjoy items from some of these fabulous North and South Carolina shops, which stretch from the mountains of Asheville, NC down to coast of Charleston, SC.

Etsy Team Grants: Success!

The past few months have been busy with lots of really fantastic Etsy Team events. Here's a wrap up of some of the wonderful Etsy Team Grant projects that have been recently completed, along with the sellers and their items. The Etsy Texas Crafters had a booth at Maker Faire in Austin, Texas, where they presented demos and gave information to Faire attendees. You can read a great blog post on the event with links to their participating members' shops and profiles here. Some of the members who lent a hand to the Team include TimaryArts, who makes crochet and felted items, like this Oatmeal Chubby Nesting Trio (on the left below), and crabappledesign, who incorporates vintage elements into her handmade items, such as this Vintage Paper Doll note card (on the right). In North Carolina, the Hornet's Nest Team had great success with their "Craft Attack!" show in October. For great photos from this show, you can search "CraftAttack" on Flickr. The Team had beautiful weather, and below are items from a vendor and an organizer of the show. On the left is LazyDogPottery's Robin's Egg Blue Coffee Mug (on the left, below) and from HappyWhosIts, a Hyacynth Whypple - Hippo Hand Puppet - Crochet Amigurumi (at right, below).

EFA, or the Etsy for Animals Team, had a really great idea for celebrating its Etsy-versary. The Team organized a great ad campaign on fantastic shopping blogs, like Modish and Hostess blog. They tracked visitors from those sites by using a coupon code incorporated into the ad designs, so that they could tell how many sales the advertisements generated. You can show your support for this Team, which raises money for animal charities through their shops, by searching "EFA Team". On the left, below, is a set of Owls in Fables - Nesting Owls, by SavageArtworks, and on the right, the Offset Sapphire Ring from AlphabettiSpaghetti.

The Boston Handmade Team had a commanding presence at Boston's SoWa Open Market the weekend of October 16, and it was wonderful! They distributed business cards that were made up for the Team, and everyone loved the cards. They used the promotional cards to chat up Etsy, their shops and why buying handmade is important to everyone. Congratulations on your success at the market, Boston Handmade! Ok, Argentina is really special to me. Here I found my place in the world...I love so much Argentina's landscapes, and the infinity of possibilities about them. You can find here waterfalls, mountains, rivers, glaciers, the sea... a huge range for everyone’s taste!

Argentina has also wonderful treasures, like the “dulce de leche” (have you ever tasted it? It is something similar to caramel... gorgeous!!), the “tango” (our music), the “yerba maté” (it is a special herb that you must brew with hot water and drink with friends/family, sharing it) and of course, “Maradona”, the best football player!!

I think the most important thing is that here, in my country, people love so much to spend time with friends. Personally (we are 10 very very close friends), every week we join at someone’s house and drink mate, eat something, and talk about everything...

I know if you're a regular Etsy shopper, you've probably tried Shop Local, a feature that allows you to search Etsy by location. It's fun to look up shops in your town to buy from...and of course, by reducing the distance between destinations you've also shaved a little off your carbon footprint.

But carbon footprints aside, I love using Shop Local to take imaginary trips around the world. When I read the profile of a shop located somewhere far away, I feel like I get a tiny glimpse of what life is like outside of Brooklyn. The human connection is one of my favorite things about Etsy.

You feel the magnetic pull of your baby, right? But what about all the junk that gets drawn into your new family's orbit — disposable diapers, plastic toys that break almost as soon as you get them, heaps of clothing? Being kind to the earth is on most people's minds these days — new parents, grandparents and friends. We invited the good folks at TreeHugger.com to write about their favorite green baby items at Etsy for this week's special Featured Buyer. TreeHugger is an environmental web magazine featuring all things green and environmental, and contributor Bonnie Alter found some great items for the Handmade Kids series.

As the mother of an overgrown child, I love the chance to look at, admire, feel, touch and maybe buy baby clothes and toys. Perhaps some day I will even have a grandchild (don't tell my son that I said that!). While it is true that charity shops are a major resource for finding good recycled clothing and toys, Etsy also has handmade options. There are so many adorable things made out of recycled and reused products on the market. So here is one hopeful-grandmother-to-be's personal list of things she would choose for a wonderful gift.

There is something about soft floppy toys that makes my maternal instincts go all sentimental. This recycled and irresistible animal is Sam, made by pogoshop, who sports a blue striped wool pullover. He is made out of soft angora which is gentle to baby's cheek. By pogoshop, $30.

I love this Veggie Power shirt. The images are taken from '70s vintage towels. So cute. By kinchi, $20.

And to politicize them early: a Che Guevara t-shirt, to match daddy's tattered one. By youngpunks, $17.

Diaper bags used to be oversized horrible looking things, usually pink and white with ribbons and bows. Now there are chic bags, well designed and made out of interesting and sophisticated fabrics. (At last!) The hemp messenger bag is one that the husband could carry without embarrassment; made out of Romanian hemp, it has 9 pockets, of all sizes. By infusion, $120.

For the exhausted mother; these Sleep Angel pillows are just the answer: they are filled with lavender from Provence. Lavender smells so wonderful and is supposed to make you sleep better and deeper (how about just sleep?). By lapomme, $16.50.

Where to shop? I'm a Canadian but I'm living in England, so I used Shop Local to find sellers here. I was intrigued by the felt creations by eikumpel who is based in England. The Kumpel doll is a jolly looking red doll for boys or girls to hug. By eikumpel, $22.

As a Canadian, Shop Local Canada turned up rikrak, who caught my eye. She does a very chic bib (what!) quilted from vintage fabrics, and reversible as well. By rikrak, $21.

From Kingston, MadaboutColour sells hand-knit baby hats which are striped and brightly-coloured. By MadAboutColour, $22.

There are the most adorable cotton diapers around now, unlike the old days when they came in white only. The diaper above is made of bamboo and is adjustable in size. By GreenWayBabywear, $14.75.

Only the best for your little one: these hand crocheted wash cloths /baby wipes are made with 100% certified organic cotton and free from dyes and other chemicals, and they come in sage and cream colours. By Knittles $9.

Combining necessity and a bit of fun, these fabric nursing pads are wash and wear. They are a fashion statement, as well as being soft and made of natural antibacterial bamboo and organic cottons. By southernbellesandbow, $4.

Walking versus driving with the little one? Walking wins out for so many good environmental reasons. I was a confirmed stroller mother and pushed it all over the city, day and night. However many new mothers (and fathers) are using slings now, especially for newborns. If your back can take it, there are a lot of benefits: free hands, close to your heart and so comfie for sleeping infants. The solid coloured organic cotton sack comes in a range of soft colours. By slingsandsacks, $70.

TreeHugger has compiled a pretty extensive guide to "How to Green Your Baby", which is a good source of information and starting place for mothers and fathers considering the green route for their children's upbringing. It outlines hot topics such as diapers, breast or bottle, toys, furniture and wipes.

Handmade Kids: Buying Local with the EtsyKids Team

The EtsyKids Team is a group of Etsy sellers who have self-organized to help each other spread the word about their great items for young ones. The group has recently grown so large — with teams from around the world — that they've been able to cluster groups of sellers by region. What does this mean for shoppers? A new, convenient way to shop local for kid's items on Etsy.

People always say that having a baby will change your life. I now know firsthand that it indeed does, but in ways much deeper than what most people talk about. Yes, I now have the padded living room with toys strewn about the floor, my vocabulary now includes complex words such as "da" and "ba" and "na," and bits of food have turned up in places I never would have imagined.

These changes are nothing compared to the changes that have happened within me. Now that I am a parent, I see the world in a whole new light, and I want to do everything I can to help make the world a better place for this future generation. I've always tried to do my part in helping the environment by being an avid recycler and driving a fuel-efficient car.

But now I'm also starting to think more about the things that I am purchasing, and where they are coming from. So, I could buy things that were mass-produced in a factory with poor working conditions halfway across the world, or I could buy local, helping both the economy and the environment. I could purchase an item from a giant box store where there are fifty other items exactly like it, or I could buy handmade and get something really unique, often even personalized.

You get the idea. So I'm starting to shift my purchasing power, and I'm giving my support more and more to independent and local businesses. Etsy is wonderful for that. When people think of shopping online, often times it's assumed that you'll be getting something from far away, but with so many shops on Etsy now, you will more than likely be able to find a wealth of items from shops in your area. I've taken this idea and applied it to the EtsyKids Team, for which I am the leader. We are a very large global team, and we have recently created regional groups within the team. Etsy Finds: Tour the World with Shop Local

Remember when you were little, giving the globe a spin with one finger poised to hone in on your next dream destination? Well, I'm back at it, in a way. I've been perusing Shop Local to see what's being made in other parts of the world. Some favorite recent "trips" included Buenos Aires, Argentina and New Zealand as a whole. (The related items below are my kiwi cross-country tour of sorts.)

Added bonus: while sitting in the midst of New York's hot and humid summer, I can imagine a chill in the air and the icy muted colors of a Southern Hemisphere winter. (How cold is it in New Zealand right now? I honestly have no idea, but that woolen peacoat sure looks cozy.)

...And the best part, I can even bring back a souvenir or two. My favorite find from this adventure would be this stuffed applique brooch with the embroidered owl by Toast. When it's actually time to break out my winter coat, I'm usually caught off guard by the weather with no time to dry clean, let alone accessorize, and just end up feeling blah. I think this puffy pin with its colorful striped fabric and cute animal motif would lend some needed summer fun to my cold weather gear.

Cinco de Mayo!

Apparently, Cinco de Mayo in Mexico is not such a big deal; it commemorates a Mexican victory over French colonial rule, but it's not the biggest holiday for Mexicans. However, in the US, people of Mexican descent and Mexicans living the States celebrate their heritage, and the 5th of May is known for being lively and full of color.

For many people, this means lots of beer and music and family fun, but for Etsy, it's an excuse to go on the hunt for some art and crafts from Mexico using Shop Local.

Kathy Malone, aka fofolle, has been creating tangible links between the offline and online worlds of Etsy. We invited her to be this week's Featured Buyer and asked her to highlight some of her favorite Brooklyn sellers, thus showing us her personal Shop Local.

Hi! My name is Kathy Malone (aka fofolle) and I am a designer and market organizer. I'd had a deep desire to be able to Shop Local, so I took matters into my own hands. I opened up a weekly-weekend indie designer market in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn called Brooklyn Indie Market.

I think the best ideas come from looking and listening to what’s around your immediate environment. I was meeting a lot of independent designers like myself who needed more selling opportunities. I was also starting to hear a lot about Etsy; in a way, I feel like we are all growing up together! The online made the offline possible: it’s a marvelous time to be doing what we are doing.

Brooklyn Indie Market is a collective of fashion and product designers providing a connection between emerging designers and shoppers, boutiques, stylists, personal shoppers and the press. Our aim is to connect one another, as well as the greater New York public, to our weekend Brooklyn market, events, showcases, trunk shows, workshops, and related resources. We also welcome non-New York area designers who are interested in our mission.

We launched the Brooklyn Indie Market website and list serve as a joint venture among independent Brooklyn-based designers to share information, learn from each other's small business challenges and to inspire and foster a community of creativity and authenticity. Our designers converge under the red and white striped tent and kiosks offering the public a first glimpse of the many new names in design.

We are on a brief hiatus until the spring so we can work on our new lines, so check back with us either as a seller or lover of all things handmade!
