Guest Curator: Shop Local With Diane Vadino

Diane Vadino is a novelist, blogger, and printmaker. She is only 62 credits from completing an undergraduate degree in conceptual art. Her novel, Smart Girls Like Me, was printed in one language and in one country but earned an A- from Entertainment Weekly, and her author’s edition of it, with handmade covers, is available in her Etsy shop. She writes frequently about shopping around the world for magazines including Budget Travel and NYLON — in which she named Etsy as the "E" in the A to Z best things about America.

As a travel writer, I'm on the road almost constantly — I'm writing this column in a web cafe in Nepal, at the tail end of a seven-hour cross-country ride on a bus that bounced so hard the seats actually came loose. Bringing home unique, handmade pieces of art and design — and writing about them on my blog, Bunnyshop — are some of my favorite things about traveling, and I use Etsy's Shop Local feature constantly — whether to find cool designers when I'm away from home, or when I'm back in New York, hoping to buy (or write about) unique work from far away.

Etsy Finds: Wandering the Manifolds

Buddy Glass, my favorite character from all of literature, reflects at one point, "We speak a kind of esoteric family language, a sort of semantic geometry in which the shortest distance between any two points is a fullish circle." I consider my shopping experiences on Etsy in a similar fashion. Some of my favorite purchases could only have been found via routes of meandering. New Rules: Support Your Local Economy

Stacy Mitchell is a senior researcher with the New Rules Project at the Institute for Local Self Reliance (ISLR), an organization started in 1974 to work with citizens, activists, policy makers and entrepreneurs to help communities improve their economies, reduce waste, manage local infrastructure and provide better overall living environments.

The New Rules Project “challenges the wisdom and inevitability of economic consolidation and works to advance policies that support strong local economies and vibrant communities.” In a nutshell, she works to advance many of the same things that Etsy stands for — handmade, local, independent production, and a connection to communities and producers.

I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with Stacy about the growth of local and independent businesses over the past several years, which many people attribute to both a backlash against “big box” retail and an appreciation for knowing one’s maker. Stacy took some time to talk to us about these issues, and her latest book, Big-Box Swindle: The True Cost of Mega-Retailers and the Fight for America's Independent Businesses, goes into much more detail.

Tell us a bit about the New Rules Project.
The New Rules Project is a national initiative started by the Institute for Local Self-Reliance. The project's mission is to make the case that bigger isn't necessarily better — that small-scale production and independent businesses nurture community and create a more sustainable and democratic economy.

Our focus is on changing public policy. If you look at the laws and regulations in place today, many of them actively favor big corporations. Federal farm policies subsidize big agribusiness; local zoning rules favor Wal-Mart; banking regulations aid big banks; and the list goes on.

We're calling for New Rules: public policies that support local economies and build strong, self-governing communities.

How did you get involved in the organization and what do you do?
I started working for the New Rules Project when it was founded in 1997. Much of my focus has been looking at the consequences of the rise of big retail chains, like Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and Barnes & Noble. These companies have taken over much of our economy with the promise of delivering good deals, but it turns out that the big-box model has been incredibly expensive. In my recent book, Big-Box Swindle, I document how these companies are fueling many of our most pressing problems, from the shrinking middle class to rising greenhouse gas emissions.

The good news is that there's now a widespread backlash. The New Rules Project has helped hundreds of grassroots groups stop big-box development projects and enact new policies that keep the chains at bay and support local businesses instead.

Even more encouraging, our research is finding growing public support for locally produced goods and independent businesses. Local food is soaring in popularity. Over the last four years, we've seen increasing numbers of new independent businesses, from bookstores to food markets, opening across the country.

Local business alliances — like Stay Local New Orleans, Local First in Salt Lake City, and Portland Buy Local in Portland, Maine — have now formed in over 130 cities and collectively count some 30,000 businesses as members. These alliances are running very creative "buy local" campaigns that are not only changing people's shopping habits, but engaging them in a conversation about community and how to transition to a more sustainable future.

Why should people shop local this holiday season?
One reason is that shopping at an independent business, instead of a chain, generates far more benefit for your local economy. Several recent studies have found that a dollar spent at a locally owned business generates 2-3 times as much local economic activity as a dollar spent at a chain and supports many more local jobs.

Another compelling reason to go local this year is to make the holidays fun again. Who wants to sit in traffic at the mall? It's so much more rewarding to stroll through the small stores in your neighborhood or downtown. You'll not only find unusual gifts that don't come from a sweatshop, but you're bound to run into friends, get into an interesting conversation, enjoy the beauty of historic buildings decked out in lights, take time to savor a hot chocolate at the local café — in short, you'll have a chance to really experience and celebrate the place in which you live.

Of course, you can't always find everything you're looking for in your own backyard, and that's why sites like Etsy and Indiebound are a great way to take advantage of the convenience and diversity of the web while still supporting independent artists and small businesses.

What kind of impact does supporting the local arts have on a community at large?
Buying anything produced locally — food, art, music, fashion — has a sizeable economic benefit for your community. The money you spend stays in the local area and helps to keep your neighbors employed.

These creative professions also contribute to the welfare of the community in so many other ways. They make the places we live interesting. They create focal points for reflection and community.

Artists and craftspeople are great problem-solvers too. As we grapple with big challenges, like climate change, we need their special abilities to help us envision a different way of living.

Do you have any specific examples of cities or towns that are experiencing a positive change?
Thanks largely to the work of Sustainable Connections, a coalition of about 500 local businesses in and around Bellingham, Washington, that community has made huge strides in incubating new businesses, expanding regional food production, and reducing the carbon footprint of buildings.

Local First Utah has changed how residents and elected officials in Salt Lake City think about economic development. A recent survey found that three-quarters of residents want fewer chains in their neighborhoods and more local businesses.

Arizona Local First was instrumental in convincing the state legislature to outlaw the kinds of subsidies that are commonly provided to big-box development projects.

Here in my hometown of Portland, Maine, many local business owners say that Portland Buy Local has made a big difference in terms of galvanizing public support and helping them survive the recession.

What are you doing to support your local community in Portland, ME?
I'm one of many volunteers with Portland Buy Local, which has about 280 members, including local businesses, artists, and nonprofits. We create new poster and advertising campaigns every couple of months that highlight the value of independent businesses and encourage people to support them.

Our posters, which are displayed on hundreds of storefronts all over the city and reproduced as ads in local newspapers, are all designed by local artists, so they are very eye-catching as well as incredibly varied in their style.

She just made the leap online and her teas are definitely worth checking out.

As a big city with a small town feel, we are fiercely loyal and supportive of each other. That’s why I decided to launch Philadelphia’s first emagazine, Around Main Line. This is a rich city in so many ways, not only because of the people, but also due to the diverse cultures that mix in neighborhoods across the region.

The streets of Philadelphia are alive with great stories that have yet to be told! It just made sense for me to seek out these fantastic local entrepreneurs and businesswomen who are talented artisans and handcrafters as well. The women I have met are so enthusiastic about their success on Etsy and I love the sisterhood we have established together.

One of my favorite parts of the Philly region is the endless choices of charming coffee shops and the unique experiences they offer. You can usually find me chilling in the dozens of java joints on the Main Line or in West Philly — people-watching, brainstorming with my web designer or working on my laptop!

It always takes me some time to pick the cities for a Shop Local Etsy Finds. For this month's edition, I went through tons of old emails looking for cities around the world that friends and family had mentioned when writing to me. As always, in every city I looked up, Etsy sellers were there.

Portland, Oregon

One of my best friends took a spur of the moment trip out to Portland to explore the area. He sent me an email two days later: "I'm camping on the beach where they filmed The Goonies. I'm officially the coolest person you know." At that moment, I was inclined to agree.

Handmade Weddings: Gifts for Maids & Men from Brides Local Magazine

Julie Raimondi is the editor-in-chief of Brides New York and Condé Nast’s 15 other regional wedding magazines (known collectively as Brides Local Magazines), which have been featuring Etsy sellers on their pages for years. Julie’s particular Etsy addiction has made her the butt of many office jokes; her magazines are a testament to her passion for original style (and so are the decorative, found-it-on-Etsy contents of her living room!). Julie knows that the options for bridesmaid and groomsman gifts are usually limited (which is probably why money clips and engraved jewelry boxes have been de rigueur for decades). But Etsy sellers create items that consistently fulfill her good-gift criteria by offering quality, originality, and customization opportunities.

The real style-makers are not the marquee names offering "witty" commentary on morning TV or the authors of glossy party-planning books. They are real brides and vendors who have the guts to do things differently. When I created Brides Local Magazines in 2005, I wanted to celebrate these folks, and show our readers creative, alternative ideas and options they won’t see anywhere else. When I was asked to guest curate a selection of bridal party gifts, you can imagine my delight, then hours and hours of guilt-free browsing. I am a huge nerd when it comes to maps. (Come to think of it, I'm a huge nerd in general, but especially for maps.) Etsy Finds: Been Around the World

I don't get to travel anywhere near as much as I would like. Believe me, I try to plan out ambitious globe-spanning vacations, but my journey across the Serengeti usually turns into a weekend in the Poconos. For today's edition of Etsy Finds, I used Etsy's Shop Local feature to search out shops in five cities that I hope will fit into my future travel plans. I started right here in New York, and then went on to Melbourne, Australia — about as far as you can get from NYC and still be on the same planet. On to Calgary, Alberta, where I wouldn't have to sit in front of an air conditioner for half the year, and Austin, Texas where I definitely would. Going green can often feel overwhelming. For every eco-friendly decision I make, I can't help but think of the thousands of other ways in which our society is having a negative impact on the planet. We Are What We Do's book, Change the World for Ten Bucks, is a refreshing reminder that small efforts can incite significant change, when applied globally and consistently. Focusing on what I do each day to help the environment, rather than feeling guilty for my shortcomings, is just the sort of encouragement I need for an enduring green lifestyle. We Are What We Do is a global social change movement. We believe it is not just politicians, institutions, and big business that change the world — it is also ordinary people like you and me. Our aim is to bring people together and demonstrate how, using simple, everyday actions, we can create a global movement of doing and changing; doing small actions and changing big problems.

Karyn Valino, a.k.a kvalino, is the owner of The Workroom, a "sew & craft by the hour" space in Toronto, Canada. The Workroom is stocked with books, patterns, fabrics and notions that are carefully selected to inspire handmade projects. The fully equipped sewing studio also offers classes in everything from clothing, quilting, beginner upholstery, pattern drafting, and natural dyeing. The Workroom hosts monthly Stitch 'n Bitch events, craft fairs and recently hosted the Toronto meeting with Etsy Admin and local sellers. Shop Local: Quebec with iheartnorwegianwood

We invited Angie from iheartnorwegianwood to curate this Shop Local guide and take us on a jaunt through Quebec in honor of St. Jean Baptiste Day. Meet some artists below and match them to their items at the bottom.

Although my Etsy shop, iheartnorwegianwood, takes up a large chunk of my time, my fiance Tyson, a.k.a. tysonbodnarchuk, and I also run a brick and mortar shop here in Montreal called Headquarters Galerie + Boutique, which sells independently made goods from all over the world. We just celebrated our three year anniversary, and Etsy has been a large part of our business from the beginning. The Shop Local feature has been a great way for us to find amazing hidden local talent of which we may never have otherwise heard!

As a Montrealer, one of our biggest summer celebrations is St. Jean Baptiste Day. The whole city takes a break and enjoys the parks, terraces, bars, music and restaurants. For Tyson and me, it means we get to have a day off from the store, take our two dogs for a long walk, then meet up with friends for some barbecue fun. In the photo above, we are just outside the gates of the St. Eustache Marche Aux Puces (Flea Market). Hunting for treasures is one of our favorite things to do in the summer, you never know what you're going to find! To me, Montreal is always an exciting city, but during St. Jean Baptiste weekend, it's practically vibrating with energy! Bonne St. Jean!

Joyeux Saint Jean-Baptiste!"

It's time to put on your traveling pants, sit back and relax as Swiss Etsian Iragrant gives us a virtual tour of her homeland in this Shop Local installment. To Switzerland we go!

Welcome, bienvenue, willkommen, benvenuto to Switzerland. I’m Ira. Did you know that we have four national languages here? This beautiful country is very unique. One guide book said it’s a patchwork quilt country, and I’m very lucky to live here.

Neuchatel is the capital of Canton Neuchatel, a region where French is spoken. After I lived in Jakarta and London, this beautiful city felt like a fairytale place to me. Friendly people, fresh air, a beautiful lake, a castle, cobble stones and the charming sandstone elegance of medieval town — all the perfect ingredients to make your creativity and imagination run wild!

But Neuchatel is not all about medieval times. We are proud to refer to our place as Watch Valley. If you have a luxurious Swiss Watch, chances are it is made in this canton. Also, Le Corbusier, the father of Modern Architecture, was born in La Chaux-de-Fonds, which is about half an hour from here. There he created a few of his early works, including the "Maison Blanche" which he built in 1912 for his parents.

The photo of me and my daughter above is taken in one of those beautiful streets in town, a popular square where I usually have my coffee rendezvous with friends while watching our kids play around us. Also in the picture, you can see the view of the Alps from my studio window in our apartment.

The Swiss are surrounded by nature and history, and they grow up in their gardens. People say hello (gruezi) to strangers, we have 24/7 milk automats, casino is a theatre, and the Zug's lake is called a sea."

junyandmilo from Riniken: "This is me in front of Switzerland's oldest tree, a linden tree, which is almost 1000 years old. If you look closely on the left you can see two people walking under it, to give you a sense of scale. This linden stands on top of a small mountain and from there you have a breathtaking view over the neighboring hills. I live nearby, in a small village near Zurich. From my window you can see lush meadows and forests and hear the jingling of the bells of grazing cows. And with a total of four castles located in the area, you only have to hold your hand out in the air to catch some fairytale magic...a key ingredient in all of my creations."

Shop Local: Turkey with Toosis

The Etsy blog's Shop Local series usually tickles my travel bug, but in this edition, Turkey by Etsy seller Toosis, has my jaw dropping on my computer keyboard. Such beautiful photos and talented artists!

My name is Pınar Sondal, aka Toosis. I am an architect and a jewelry designer living in Istanbul, one of the most beautiful, exotic and cosmopolitan cities to live in. Istanbul is a city of two continents; Asia and Europe divided by the water way of Bosphorus. Its shores offer a delightful mixture of past and present, grand splendor and simple beauty. Modern hotels stand next to shore front wooden villas, marble palaces, rustic stone fortresses and neighbor small fishing villages. I live in the Europe side of the city. The Asian part is just across the Bosphorus Bridge.

The above picture was taken in a park very close to my house. I walk here with my kids and get mused before starting a project, enjoying the view while they play. I use silver and gold in my designs, creating big rings and earrings. I show my line of jewelry in local haute couture boutiques. Since I discovered Etsy and started sharing my taste in design with the rest of the world, I feel blessed. A performer needs to hear the applause to feel appreciated. Now I get my inspiration required out of my international customers' Etsy feedback.

We live in Istanbul with our two lovely dogs. I have been working with polymer clay for nearly two years now."

Nihan aka Designbynihan from the Bosforous side of Istanbul, Turkey: "How many cities in the world have a sea that passes through it? I sometimes take boat trips at sunset... Istanbul just surrounds you with silhouettes of history. I love to share my simit (savory roll covered with sesame seed) with the seagulls that accompany me on my boat rides. The city is sometimes chaotic, but always colorful and surprising. I love to smell, touch, and listen to Istanbul, and I always find something inspirational."

Sabahnur from Istanbul, Turkey: "Spring time weather in Istanbul can be very surprising. Although the sun was shining, the wind was very strong the day this photo was taken. After a little walk, my hands turned into ice cubes. I even had to wear my hood to get warm. The picture was taken by the sea side of Uskudar, one of the most mystical sights of Istanbul. In the background are the maiden tower, the silhouette of Sultan Ahmet, and Ayasophia, which are historical and beautiful places to visit."

Heli aka helisengezer from Cappadocia, Turkey: "We made a trip here last autumn and it had a huge influence on me. It is the most amazing and miraculous place I’ve ever been, with its fairy chimneys and underground cities. I moved to Istanbul a little over three years ago and have greatly enjoyed my silent and peaceful handmade life in this hectic and sometimes chaotic metropolis. That is the thing I love most about living here; I can be in peace and on my own as much as I want while crafting and creating, but when I feel I need some company, all I have to do is open the door and there is an endless flow of people and a world full of life and color."

Meltem Semizoglu aka meltemsem in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Turkey: "The Grand Bazaar, which is the largest covered market in the world, was constructed in the 15th century. It is famous for its jewelry, ceramics, spices and carpets. It was my favorite place when I was a student at Law Faculty of Istanbul University. I feel really lucky that I can find the most qualified and cheapest material in a magical and fascinating atmosphere so close to me."

Ferda Tumer aka filofashion at the entrance of Dolmabahce Palace Istanbul, Turkey: "I love walking along the streets of Istanbul and feeling the combination of both Eastern and Western cultures for inspiration. It’s just what an artisan needs. My life has changed since I’ve met Etsy. It is wonderful to have friends from all over the world with common interests."

Vildan aka bayanhippo from Bursa, Turkey: "I am a bag designer from Bursa. The city is the first capital of the Ottoman Empire. There are many important Ottoman building remains in the city. In the photo above you can see the Koza Han (1490), which was originally built for trading silk cocoons. I usually can’t resist visiting the ts narrow streets of the covered bazaar area when I am in this neighborhood."

Ayse Tugrul aka aysetugrul from Duzce, Turkey: "I am inspired by the beauty of my surroundings in all my designs. I get all my creativity from nature and I feel so lucky. I wake up everyday with the songs of the birds, feel the fresh air outside, walk on the grass barefoot giving my negative energy to the ground, swim in the gorgeous seas of my country. Who can believe that I am 41 years old. I don’t!"

The Art of Slow: A Celebration of the Handmade

Today Lou Sagar, Etsy's resident merchandising consultant and Slow Movement devotee, will tell us a bit of the history behind this growing shift. Slow Food creates a thoughtful intersection between planting, harvesting and preparing an artisanal meal and the craftsmanship behind a thrown ceramic bowl, a roughly hewn oak table and the woven tablecloth that covers it. The end result is a mindful meal that is eco-friendly, sustainable, delicious and distinctly memorable. Here's Lou.

The Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity was initially formed in partnership with the Italian region of Tuscany to recognize that the appreciation of cooking and fine foods must include the safeguarding of local farms and the preservation of cultural traditions. What began as a movement focused upon a concern for “terra-verde” (Mother Earth) is now emerging as a global mindset promoting a healthier approach to contemporary living and sustainable values. At its core there is deep admiration for the handmade. In fact, it’s notable that the birthing of this movement took place in Italy, a country which, during the Renaissance, made the artisan noble. The crafting of handmade objects was celebrated. Ceramicists, glassblowers, metalworkers, woodworkers, and goldsmiths were honored, just like we do here at Etsy.

As opposed to the culture of fast food, the sub-movement known as Slow Food celebrates the process of growing and making things as much as it does the end product. This process is an essential part of the story, which enhances the experience. There is respect for materials, techniques, and presentation. Often misunderstood, the first impression of “Slow” is the idea that we one should “slow down,” which is certainly not the intent at all. It’s the added pleasure and wisdom we enjoy when we practice the “art of slow,” which is how I have come to appreciate and share it.

As we all know, the responsibilities associated with our busy lives and work are often hectic and overwhelming. As we move towards spring (in the Northern Hemisphere, at least!), keep “the art of slow” in mind as you celebrate the Easter and Passover holidays later this month. Think global but shop local. Ask local growers to tell you their stories. Use small dishes for tastings. Get the kids out into the garden to feel the soil. Spend a night outside looking at the stars. Most of all, encourage handmade gifts for friends, family, and associates.

Ah, la dolce vita! I'm personally in love with Italy and I was thrilled to accept alibli's pitch for this edition of our Shop Local series. She touches on another topic near and dear to Etsy's heart: sustainability. The Slow Movement was first established in Italy and we all have a lot to learn from our European friends. Read on...

Benvenute e benvenuti! I’m so glad to host you all here! Don’t worry, in my garden there is room for everyone. My name is Alice, aka alibli here on Etsy, and I live in a small town near Milan (do you know the Duomo cathedral? Well, just walk North for some 20 km and you’ll find me!). The house where I live with my family is surrounded by a beautiful wood, and you can enjoy an incredible view of the Alps from my windows when the sky is blue.

I am a tree and flower girl, and you can see me in my natural habitat, my favorite place, with a few of my flourishing babies. It’s a pity that I can’t craft my earrings out here, but I have planned to open a kindergarten for the Pixies in this green corner… They need to know a bit of outdoor life before taking off to the world!

I am sort of an aesthetic-eco freak; everything I love feels good both for my senses and the world surrounding me. That’s why I have chosen such fellows to guide you through Italy. All of them create true beauty thanks to their incredible talent while trying to live a life as sustainable as possible. (Isn’t it the perfect match?)

So take your time to sunbathe with Chiara and run down the hills with Lucia; be daring on the roofs with Linda and play hide and seek with fairies and elves with Sara; let Emilia, Alessandra, Chelsea, Mirella and Eva show you the beauties of our cities…

celestefrittata: "This picture was taken in a small old mariner's neighborhood called Boccadasse in Genova, northern Italy, the city where I was born and raised. I think Genova is just the perfect place. I'm lucky enough to live with hills and mountains just outside and just half an hour away from the sea."

Dindolina: "I've been living and working in the heart of the historical center of Rome since I was a student of architecture. This is the view from the roof of my house. You can see the baroque dome of the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone, built by the architect Francesco Borromini."

We meet for coffee once a month  and talk all things Etsy! Italians are so good about being green, and it's  easy to be inspired when you are surrounded by the Alps. mireloom uses  handmade materials with natural dyes, ItalianPostcards's vintage treasures  recycle the abundance of great Italian fashion, and Ixela and eccoitaly scour the markets to find beautiful reusable fabrics, materials and antique  buttons. Emilia's shop name really says it all, ecco Italy means 'This is  Italy!'"

Aula46: "This photo was taken inside of the Accademia of Art of Brera, where I study.  46 depicts the classroom, where I crafted the series of sculpture jewelry I sell here on Etsy.  Unfortunately, this place no longer exists except in my memory and in the the feeling that even now forces me to create these jewels."  

Popcorntree: "...a magical wood surrounds my home. Shapes, colours, the smell and the sound of nature! Here I find my inspiration. I do feel like a princess in a fairy tale."

Larimeloom: "Here I am right in my front yard, in the middle of the hills of the Langhe. The view all around where I live is wonderful, all wild woods, with a few houses here and there. I love the green philosophy... am I 'green?' Well, not 100% to be honest, but I do dabble in natural herbal dyeing and I LOVE to repurpose things, bringing them to new and better lives. I also ride my bike a lot, and my car runs on methane, which is about one of the greenest fuels available!"

REphilosophy: "Here is a moment of me and Taz in our secret garden in Milan. We enjoy the water and look for new ways to reuse as many materials as we can, to create items for our REphilosophy shop.  What is wonderful about Milan is that art is almost everywhere, the city is vibrant and full of inspiration.... and I don't need a car! Shop Local: Ireland with bonzie

The clothing designers and Etsy sellers behind fashionable shop bonzie (aka Yvonne and her aunt and business partner Ger) are here to guide us through some of the freshest talent in Ireland. Meet some of Ireland's finest artists and designers, and Shop Local Ireland in honor of St. Patrick's Day!

Here we are (pictured above) outside the back of our studio — fields of haystacks that go on for miles. It's our favourite place to sit with a cup of tea on the rare occasion that the sun comes out. Having lived and worked in the city for years, it's a really lovely change of pace to be back in the South of Ireland where expansive fields of golden corn are still a way of life. Out of 325 pictures taken by my father, who also dabbles in photography, there was only one picture anyway suitable. This really sums up the "blagarddin" that we get up to when we are supposed to be taking a professional shot. In a real pro shot, below, our sister Shaz models one of our dresses on Bonmahon, a local beach.

It's basically all hands on deck here, a family affair. Ger and I both design and sew on the label, but our styles are very different. I love "Tattered Couture" and Ger is a perfectionist where finishing is concerned, so between us it's a nice mix. To begin with I was working alone and convinced my aunt Ger to set up her own Etsy shop, but within a couple of weeks we realized we would be better off joining forces. We became the Aunt and Niece Design Duo, Bonzie. We are both from Clonmel, Co. Tipperary down the South of Ireland and studied fashion design separately in Dublin and Cork. We are now based in the small Southern Coastal City of Waterford, just up the road from the home of Waterford Crystal with a wooden chalet design studio right up the garden path.

One of our favourite things about Etsy has to be the sense of community about. When we first joined we were certain that we would only meet American peers and artists, as Etsy is based in the U.S. However, after a wee bit of time in the Forums we quickly established a group of Etsy family all with Irish ties, roots and even a "Cuple Focal"! It is such a pleasure to meet other Irish Etsians, and as we are such a small Island, it's always possible to meet up with other Etsians in real life. Many friendships have been made over the last few years and the gang of gals meets up regularly for chats in "This Aul Irish Thread" in the Teams section of the Forums. As our Irish roots stretch far and wide, we have also made great friends with ties to Ireland all over the world! In fact one of our best stateside Etsy pals is coming to visit us in three weeks!

cuada: "When I'm creating bags or clothes, the view from my workroom is of the Comeragh Mountains. As you can see, they are amazing, with so many stories chiseled in the rock by the rain, mist and waterfalls. They are an obvious inspiration. My view on the other side is of the Waterford coastline, with miles of unspoiled, hidden beaches. I grew up in the countryside of Old Parish, and can't imagine living anywhere that isn't close to the sea. Old Parish is part of a Gaeltacht (Irish Speaking) area, which means that I have a deep appreciation of Ireland's native language and culture. The scenic beauty, the peace, the individuality and the immersion in Irish culture are very specific to Waterford and very important to me."

Meluseena: "This is a shot of me with rural Cork, which is where I reside! What I love about Ireland is that I get to live somewhere so wondrously green... Hailing from a hot dry Mediterranean island with no natural streams or countryside, I appreciate wholeheartedly every shrub and tree!"

lilycobweb: "The photo is of myself and my daughter Maryam, art student and Etsy buyer, taken at Mourne Grange Craft Shop, Kilkeel, Co. Down, near where I live. This craft shop carries my items, as well as loads of other handmade goodies. Great Etsy supporters... I'm wearing my best Irish smile!"

irisdesign: "I live in Dun Laoghaire (pronounced Duhn Leary), which is a coastal town about seven miles south of Dublin. The town's name derives from Laoghaire, a 5th century High King of Ireland. In 1821 it was named Kingstown in honour of a visit by King George IV, but reverted back to its ancient Irish name in 1921. When I first came to Ireland from Germany I lived in Dublin inner city for about a year and found it just too noisy and busy, so one sunny day I took the train out to Dun Laoghaire and it was love at first sight! I think everyone would love to live right beside the sea and I am happy to report that 20 years later I am still living here."

AnnieDesign: "Woodstown beach is quiet and unspoilt and backed by beautiful woodlands. It is a special place for me ... it's where my husband and I did our 'courting,' where my boys spent their summers playing, and I now live close by. I love to walk there on very early summer mornings and during winter storms. The seasonal changes in Ireland are beautiful and inspiring, even on the typical misty overcast day this picture was taken."

Shop Local: Hungary with MGMart

Today we bring you Marianna Mills aka MGMart, who hails from Hungary. She's gathered together her fellow Eastern European pals for this Shop Local segment.

The photo above shows me in front of the Castle of Iszkaszentgyörgy in Hungary, the little village where I now live. I love coming here with my family for picnics, taking photos, walking and dreaming about what life was like here before...

But most of the time I come here to pick my son up from school (the village school is in the Castle). I’m always telling my son he is a lucky boy to spend his time there and learn Hungarian. We used to spend every summer holiday here with my family while we lived in London. We decided to build our own house and to move to this lovely place (for a while) so that our son could learn Hungarian reading and writing.

This is me on my 18th birthday. This is probably the time when I became a professional artist, as this was the time my artwork and jewelry started to sell in Budapest, Debrecen, Lake Balaton…There was no Etsy or computer access at this time.

I used to travel to these cities every week to sell my jewelry to small shops, and would travel across to the former Czech Republic to buy beads and anything for artwork. I used to have to wait for hours to walk across the borders and had to be searched by the guards, but this never put me off my work. I had to make my own clothes from an early age if I wanted to look different each week. I made the outfit pictured at right for my 18th birthday. Many years later I met my British husband while he was working in Hungary and we moved to England, and lived there for over 11 years.

vadjutka: "From early spring to autumn you can find me here with my beloved – Dutch – bike. This place is called 'the Ditch': an open-air pub and cultural centre in the very heart of Budapest; a place for concerts, exhibitions, and design markets. I love my bike, so when I am not working or making jewelry, I often take a ride to a park, and then to have a glass of wine with friends at the Ditch. The origin of its name is quite simple: the cultural center is under the ground, in a very big ditch."

6Carmen6: "In this picture, I'm in front of the lake at Mályi, a small village in  Hungary. It's not a very popular or known lake, but it's really  beautiful. Some of my relatives are living here and every time I visit  them I'm fulfilled with the easy and simple, calm life there. This  inner peace is really useful when I'm working on something. I started  beading in early 2007 after a crafty childhood. I've always liked the  idea of living creatively and surrounding myself with beautiful things.  Even though I'm now studying at a university to become a teacher, I can't  imagine my life without beads."

annabeads: "This photo was taken in Szentendre, in the Budapest Transportation Company Town Public Transport Museum. The place has a magical nostalgic atmosphere. Szentendre is a small picturesque city near the capital city of Budapest, and a lot of artists live here. There are many museums and contemporary galleries representing the rich traditions of Hungarian art. Although I live in the heart of Budapest, I like to spend time here, especially at spring when all of the trees are blooming.  I'm actually studying textile design (weaving), but my second favorite creating-activity is beading and making jewelry. My all time favorites are the beaded beads, I can't make enough of them. :)"

Fordos: "I am Bence Fördős, a Hungarian designer. Every year on the 20th of August we have great fireworks here in Hungary. It is St. Stephen’s Day, a public holiday. We celebrate the foundation of the Hungarian state 1000 years ago. I could see the fireworks from my roof, and the picture above was taken there! I graduated from Moholy Nagy University of Applied Arts in 2001. During my school years I made bigger pieces, like interiors, cloakrooms, cafeteria equipment, etc... My diploma was a chess set. This was a very successful piece. The Hungarian Design Council has admitted this work to participate in a range of exhibitions with other young Hungarian designers, including Objects from Hungary (OH!), representing Hungary all over Europe.  I have been dealing with jewelry design since 2004. In my early period I started with steel jewelry. Nowadays I work with gold, silver, palladium, titanium, steel, copper, brass, aluminum, many kinds of exotic woods, acrylic, rubber, etc... Now I am working on a new project, and developing cast silver jewelries. This work will be about a softer, warmer, and friendlier theme."

krisztimaros: "This picture was taken last summer in Badacsony — which is one of my favorite places in Hungary. There are fine wines and beautiful views next to the lake Balaton. It's a perfect location to relax!"

Shop Local: Greece

Kalosorisate, elpizoume na apolaysete th thea! I was very lucky to spend last summer in a beautiful place called Serres, in Northern Greece. Born and raised in Athens, beautiful natural sites are not very common to me, and visiting Serres, I was overwhelmed by the thick forests, the breathtaking vast plains and the sparkling sea. The few days I stayed there, I breathed enough fresh air to get me through the rest of the year.

annarubyking: "This photo of me is taken on island where my husband's family comes from. The beach I'm at is named Porto Katsiki which means Goat Port, because it was found by a shepherd who was chasing after his mischievous goat. At least I imagine he was mischievous. This photo is taken in October and it's a little cold and windy — hence the ear covering — but there are still people swimming! I really believe that this must be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and I love that I can visit in the off season when there are not many other souls around!"

antigo ni: "Me and my hubby :) This photo was taken 2 years ago at Meteora (Thessalia-Greece) during our best family vacations so far. Meteora — an UNESCO World Heritage Site — is known for its unusual geological formations (sandstone rock pillars) and for the medieval monasteries built high atop them. It is a strange but breathtaking landscape that has been sculpted by wind and water over thousands of years. The monasteries were mostly built from the 14th-16th centuries by monks seeking to get away from it all. Although 20 monasteries were built, today only six remain intact and are open to the public. It's one of the most worthy places to visit!"

creation sbyeve: "I moved to Athens 7 years ago, from my small hometown in North Greece. I love living in Athens, because it is a city of different aspects. A walk around the famous historic triangle — Plaka, Thission, Psyri — of the old neighborhoods reveals the coexistence of different eras. There are old mansions, well-preserved ones and others worn down by time, as well as luxurious department stores and small intimate shops, fancy restaurants and traditional taverns. All have their place here. The picture is taken at a small café in Thissio, with view to the Acropolis."

homelab: "I live in a suburb of Athens called Egaleo. It's a normal city with everyday people but with a huge park in the middle. What used to be a firearms factory 60 years ago is now a little forest where you can walk your dog and play with your kids. I really enjoy living next to it — the smell of the ground when it rains, the songs of the birds in the morning. Things are the things that are very familiar to people living in the countryside but very important to us who live in the cities."

kissthefrog: "This picture was taken in my home town near my elementary school. I used to spend a lot of hours by the river playing hide and seek. Sometimes when I feel sad or I need to relax I go back to visit my little frog friends."

nafsika: "This is me in Serifos, a beautiful island of the Aegean. Greece has so many islands for one to explore. My dream is that someday I will be able to move to one and live off my art! It's hard to say what I love best about my country. I love the clear blue skies and the warm sunlight on my face. I love the sea and the sound of the waves reaching the shore. And of course I feel blessed (and cursed) to live in a country with such a yummy cuisine!!!"

NickyBee Shop: "When I think of my country, Greece, I think: sea, blue, light. I don't believe I could find a picture that better shows exactly that! It was taken last August by my sweet husband. It's in Santorini, the southeast of the Cyclades group of islands in the middle of Aegean Sea. Santorini is a magical, mystical place...Seriously — it's the absolute zen destination, a truly unique and endlessly romantic island where many couples from all over the world go to get married and have their honeymoons. Although its spectacular physical beauty attracts thousands of tourists, one thing that really impresses me is the quiet and calm atmosphere and the positive energy you can sense in the air once you set foot on the island. Santorini is what remains of one of the largest volcanic eruptions on the planet 3,600 years ago. The middle part of the island collapsed into the sea leading to the creation of a lagoon called Caldera (you can see it in the picture). Some even say that the destruction of its great civilization provided Plato with the inspiration for the lost Atlantis story..."

Stemellina: "This is me in my studio at home in Athens, Greece where I work on my felt creations. Here I bring to life my designs which are inspired by the beauties of Greece. My always sunny country with the magical islands, the breathtaking sights and rich culture gives me freedom to express my creativity."

trisevyeni: "I live in the city of Patra, in the Peloponnese and this is my neighborhood: a place with two huge playgrounds, where children's laughter plays around the squares till late in the evening.This is the playground I spent my entire childhood in..I ran, I played football (soccer), hide and seek, and every night I waited for the next day to come, to meet my friends...I return here again, playing...this time with my pliers, my gems and lots of wire!"

What’s new in the big city of the South? Everything handmade! Atlanta and its surrounding suburbs support a wonderfully talented bunch of Etsy sellers. It is a vibrant, young city that’s definitely on the up and up, and the creative community here is in full bloom despite the winter weather!

I love Atlanta because it’s bursting with creative inspiration, and on top of all the big-city perks—like art museums, galleries, festivals, and events—there are lots of great little nooks that I can inhabit for an afternoon and get creative. Up top is a picture of me at one of my favorite spots—Dr. Bombay’s Underwater Tea Party—in the Candler Park neighborhood. I like to go here for a cup of tea (or a scoop of ice cream in the summer), sit down with my sketch book and dream up new jewelry designs for my Etsy shop, Pamplemousse et Parapluie. If all that creative work makes me hungry, afterward I’ll stop by The Flying Biscuit just up the block for a scrumptious meal.

Tiffany of electricboogaloo in the courtyard of her loft studio: “The buildings here are 100+ year-old factories, and I love that they left as much of the old equipment and machinery in place as is safely possible. It's a perfect space for creative work, unless you are bothered by the noise of trains passing every 30 minutes. What I love about living and working in Atlanta is the mix of old and new. Other cities tear down these wonderful old buildings, where here they fix them up. For a creative person, it's energizing to drive or walk around town and not see rows of houses and buildings that all look the same.”

Morgan of mkendall: “This photograph was taken by the window in my dining area. It's my favorite area to shoot in because it has spectacular light all throughout the day. I never use my flash so good natural light is very important. One of the reasons I like Atlanta is because it is such a green city. There is so much nature everywhere; I'm constantly inspired by it. I take the things that I see in my everyday life and turn them into dreamy surreal atmospheres.”

Marcy of StudioMarcy: “Here I am at FlameTree Glass (http://www.FlameTreeGlass.com) just north of Atlanta in Roswell, GA. It's an outstanding lampworking supply shop, (just look at those luscious Italian glass rods behind me). Owner Lance McRorie's goblet is just a small example of the wonderful art glass in here too. I'm really lucky to be in Atlanta, which is home to so many wonderful glass artists, friends and mentors. Our local non-profit bead-making group, Southern Flames (http://www.SouthernFlames.org) rocks too.”

Whenever I have a formal function to attend, I find a vintage dress there to 'doctor up' with paint and liberal use of the glue gun. (I've made a Frida Kahlo dress where I painted a bleeding human heart on the bodice, and a fall princess dress with spray paint and lots and lots of leaves.) I love Atlanta because you can find anything here. With our rich variety of cultures, thriving handmade community, and slick high-end stores, there’s ample opportunity to be inspired and to find a niche not yet filled."

Jolene of DingoGirl66: "I am actually one of the few Georgia natives who grew up and are still living here—I actually grew up on a farm in north Georgia. I enjoy going to an area called The Land Trust, located just 5 minutes from my home. It is a small oasis right inside the city that has organic gardens, ponds, an animal conservatory, a sweat lodge and mud chairs. (That’s what I am sitting on in the picture.) You would think you were in the middle of the woods here if you didn't hear the MARTA trains roaring by in the background! I have enjoyed many mediums of art in my life, but none compare to sewing. I love sewing—it allows me to feel free. I can use any colors, textures and shapes that I want and there are no rules. I develop my characters from drawings, and then give them more life and a sense of humor."

Jeanette of vesselsandwares and VeganDish: “I like Atlanta because it doesn't snow, I don't need a car and there are lots of good vegan eats. I love the constant state of flux that Atlanta is in. It is ever-changing and diverse. My studio is in the Cabbagetown neighborhood, near the historic Oakland Cemetery. It has a great urban/rural mixture—lots of trees and squirrels, right alongside some amazing graffiti artwork.”

Beauty inspires me, and Mooncake is full of beauty—stunning clothes, jewelry and accessories from independent designers. My aesthetic is very French-Asian, and Mooncake's refined, delicate whimsy delights me. And the neighborhood—Virginia Highlands—epitomizes what is alluring about Atlanta—the lush profusion of nature juxtaposed with beautiful old buildings. I grew up here, and the need to submerge myself in green is in my bones. I dream of having a studio nearby, in a little strip of shops tucked along a residential block on Virginia Avenue. I would suspend my bed from the ceiling along with candlelit chandeliers, and invite you to visit me in my magical atelier.”

I like living so close to Atlanta—I can take advantage of all that it has to offer, while residing in a small town with charm and character. We have great local shops that include a fabulous coffee shop and bread bakery that are unlike the major chain establishments—they really make you feel a part of the community. Shop Local this holiday season and support independent craftspeople. It's a great way to reduce your carbon footprint! We are pleased to have jenmenkhaus here from Baltimore, Maryland. That's her, in the red scarf. She's picked some of her favorite local crafters, and is spreading the word about the Baltimore Etsy Street Team!

Here I'm standing in front of the mosaic wall at the American Visionary Art Museum. My husband and I had one of our first dates here, we got married here, and now we bring our daughter here. We actually traveled to London to see the Automata Exhibit, which was ironically on its way to the States to reside at AVAM. Lucky for us, the exhibit is still here, and our daughter can't get enough of it. I just hope our next little one (due this spring) loves it as much as we do!

The Baltimore Etsy Street Team proves that there is power in numbers. In their banner year, BEST's membership has gone from 7 to over 60+ with the local media taking notice of their talent, professionalism and (of course) their super-awesome craftiness. With a hard working team and a core of 12 really motivated ladies, they have successfully made a blip in Baltimore's history. You may know Baltimore from Homicide and The Wire, but we know Baltimore as one of the most charming — and crafty — cities around. Take some time to see the sights of Charm City with members of BEST and friends from the Charm City Craft Mafia. These good people represent just a fraction of the hundreds of crafters and artists living in our fair city.

tigerlillyshop: "One of our city's most memorable landmarks stands high on a western hill in Patterson Park. 'The Pagoda' was built in 1892, a high Victorian Oriental style observation tower overlooking the park. I love our neighborhood green space and feel lucky to have such a great outdoor public place in Baltimore. I walk there with my daughter; we hunt for nature things together to preserve in my copper jewelry line. Finding nature and the subtle essence of the seasons can be a challenge in the inner city, but we can find them in Patterson Park."

vwstudios: "Tucked in a dell in the middle of an urban Baltimore neighborhood is the Baltimore Museum of Art's sculpture garden. I used to live around the corner and visit regularly, now I stop by on occasion to be inspired by one of Baltimore's jewels! It's a small garden, nestled between the museum and the Johns Hopkins University campus. I love the intimate setting and the lush greenery. The criss-crossing paths bring many pedestrians through on their way to somewhere else, but the benches are always full of people stopping to take a moment with the art."

jennyjen42: "Here I am in one of my favorite hiding spots...the Cylburn Arboretum, a nature preserve and city park of about 207 acres, located in northwest Baltimore City. I first came here on a field trip in the fourth grade and we went on a nature hike looking for birdies. There is a Nature Museum which contains a collection of Maryland birds, most of which are mounted in habitat arrangements, and collections of bird eggs from the late 1800's, butterflies and moths, rocks and minerals, fossils and seashells, games, and habitat dioramas. When you are here you can't believe that you are still in parts of urban Baltimore. I like to think of this place as my little oasis. I like to come here in search of more subjects for my birdy bird products. I am pictured here trying to persuade some friendly fellas to come closer for more in-depth research!"

spatherapy: "This is me and my dog Lacey hanging out by the the Chesapeake Bay in the suburbs of Baltimore. I grew up in the city, but quickly learned to love the peacefulness of the 'burbs. Living in an old little town by the water with easy access to the city is the perfect place for me."

jillpopowichdesigns: "While I no longer live in downtown Baltimore but rather on the outlying region, I spend much of my time in the city for either work or play. I love that every neighborhood has its own unique personality and the residences are as unique and different as the many experiences you can have in Charm City. I find its quirkiness inspiring: it makes you want to explore its many facets and tell its story. This picture was taken in Fells Point, which in its day was a shipping port and playground for sailors. Now it is known for its quirky shops and concentration of bars and pubs."

sweetpepita: "My husband took this photo of my daughter and I at the zoo in Druid Hill Park. We are somewhere in the park, either at the zoo, the conservatory, or walking the maze of access roads through the thick woods with our dog Jakey. We have neighbors who remember when horse drawn mowers kept the park manicured and trimmed, and we've heard stories of entire families sleeping on the large expanses of lawn, trying to keep cool during the hottest months of the year. When the City stopped mowing, the trees and vines reclaimed the land. It was once a refined kind of glorious. It's scruffy now, but magical."

greenstarstudio: "I love living in Baltimore because there is art EVERYWHERE! As a muralist, illustrator and teacher, I'm constantly immersed in public art. Baltimore has a wonderful community arts scene and the city really embraces the idea of living with art; from the galleries, to the art classes, to the murals & the stores featuring handmade, local work — it's the perfect place to live WITH art. (This is me in front of my most recent mural in Baltimore, on 21st and Boone, near Greenmount.)"

bowerbox: "What I love about Charles Village is that it's a fun neighborhood where people aren't afraid to paint their house bright pink or yellow or blue — and they're proud of it! I live on one of the most colorful blocks of Calvert Street, and have lived in a few different colored painted ladies. Pictured is my former apartment, in a rowhouse voted Best in Charles Village for years — and it's just as beautiful inside, with original woodwork, stained glass, and peacock wallpaper!"

spaghettikiss & pinkkiss: "The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) campus is a well known breeding ground for Baltimore artists. Not only did we get married here, but it is also the place where we learned our craft, where we met and where we started our businesses, Spaghetti Kiss (Mikey) and Pink Kiss Pottery (Shawna) together. In this picture we are walking in front of MICA's Brown Center, on our way to our wedding reception."

redprairiepress: "Baltimore may have a rough reputation, but once you're here, you realize this city is just proud of itself, and thus, proud of you for making art in its borders. People here love knowing that what they're buying comes from here, and they love having certain things to claim as Baltimore's own. The city is big enough that it has a diverse mix of happenings, but small enough that on any given day, most people are connected to at least one of them because they'll know one of the organizers or artists. Warm greetings from the wacky weird Wild West that is California! Home state of the majestic redwoods, the Salton Sea, Salvation Mountain, Patty Hearst, the Hippie movement, and of course the original Bigfoot sighting. We’re Adam Maron and Quincy Pearson, shop owners here on Etsy.

Adam and I are both third generation Californians. We Californians are deluged every year by earthquakes, wildfires, floods, mudslides, and over-exposed starlet/debutantes, yet we prevail. We wanted you to know that even though it seems that the entire world has become mini-malled and super-stored, please remember that there are thousands of us creating things, salvaging things, and recycling the old into new, and we might just be right in your neighborhood. DaleSmith: "This is me at the Griffith Park Observatory, one of my favorite places in Los Angeles. When the city feels too big and difficult to navigate, I like to come up here and look down across the whole city. It becomes simple and intimate again. It's also a great place to meet people from all around the world, which is probably the best part about Los Angeles."

Brenda of phydeaux: "This is me in my backyard private woods. I live in Saratoga, in the 'Village,' just where the Santa Cruz Mountains start. Saratoga is part of the infamous Silicon Valley, one of the most populous and high pressure areas ever to live and work. I love that I live right on the fold between Silicon Valley and the woods, where we have mountain lion warnings posted and coyotes singing me to sleep. I am recharged and recentered by my backyard oasis, which includes a huge old oak tree filled with birds, squirrels and even possums (which keep my cats entertained all day long)! I look out on my yard and the mountains when I knit. I live on the very street used by 1800's lumber mill workers and right next door to the former bar/brothel and barn they frequented. Lots of history (maybe even the odd ghost), woods and lots of wildlife — I love my home beyond belief!"

MaryCee222: "I live in Beachwood Canyon up in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles. My home is nestled somewhere in between the tourist-obsessed Hollywood sign and bustling Franklin Ave. In contrast to what one normally thinks of Los Angeles, my neighborhood is a communal and serene place with the most beautiful natural light. I am inspired daily by the casual beauty and am fortunate to have captured some of its magic in my photography. The very papasan chair I am sitting in has been host to many of my canine subjects, a few tipsy friends, and many afternoon naps."

Laura James (Laurs) aka beemiceelf: "I live in the town down in the valley behind me. It's a great location because it's quiet and has a small town feel, but it's not too secluded. I can drive in any given direction and in under an hour I can be at a beach, a desert, a mountain top, or downtown LA."

madewithlovebyhannah: "Here I am at Arroyo Seco Mini Golf, nestled on the edge of Highland Park and South Pasadena. Built in 1955, it's the oldest surviving course in the area. It's fun, colorful and uncomplicated, the same feeling I like to maintain in the things that I make. The thing I love most about living here is the fantastic weather: it's always mini golf weather!"

Melissa aka axelhoney: "I live in Santa Monica and I love it. Although I don't live steps from the beach, it is only a short bike ride. I also ride my bike to my work, which is just steps from the beach. Just south of the Santa Monica Pier is the spot I come to and just let my thoughts wonder before I start my work day. I love that Santa Monica is so close to LA. I can basically find ANYTHING within a hop, skip or jump from my doorstep. This includes resources, inspiration and even other crafty entrepreneurs. I am currently apprenticing at a jewelry store and the owner is helping me launch my jewelry line, which is another benefit of living here, opportunity is everywhere. Santa Monica is an amazing spot, the mountains with incredible hiking to the North, LA to the East, the colorful and artsy Venice Beach to the South and the Ocean to the West. I couldn't ask for more."

Lacy aka ladiesofleisure: "What is wonderful about Los Angeles, and what I really love about living here, is the diversity of the city's landscape. The chaotic energy of an urban environment with a complexity of cultures, incredible art and music, set in a landscape of luscious flora and fauna with the ability to be in the mountains, desert, or laying on the beach. (Traffic permitting.) I love going to swap meets and farmers markets, riding my bike along the L.A river, and driving out to the desert to go camping. It's truly an amazing city....and of best of all....The weather is always perfect!"

Gift Ideas: Shop Local Montreal with supayana

Yay supayana! We invited this Canada-based clothing designer to curate this Shop Local guide, Montreal edition. Shopping local is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint — and to get your items in a speedier manner! Meet some artists below and match them to their items at the bottom.

Here I am in front of the Orange Julep in Montreal. It's a giant orange-shaped fast food restaurant that was built in the 1940's, on the side of a highway. Waitresses clad in roller skates used to serve people in their cars. Nowadays, you have to walk up to the counter, but you can still buy a deliciously creamy, frothy "Orange Julep" drink. Oh, and they have good veggie burgers, too! It was hard to pick my favorite Montreal place/monument because there are so many beautiful, historical, architectural wonders to choose from. In fact, the Orange Julep is probably the last place native Montrealers would think of. I like it because it represents the strange and unexpected...and that is exactly what you'll find in the city of Montreal.

It also documents one of the times where I was smart enough to wear a helmet on my bicycle. It's getting cold again in Montreal and this photo makes me nostalgic for a warmer time of year when I had the courage to leave my neighbourhood every once and a while."

Tyson Bodnarchuk: "Like most guys my age, I grew up on a steady diet of Star Wars, comic books, horror movies and The Muppets. These things have come to be a big influence in my art, so you'll find all sorts of monsters and other creatures in my paintings and handpainted shoes/purses."

Carolyn from Mookasoap: "This photo was taken in my studio/boutique, in my favorite Montreal neighborhood - St.Henri. The area is home to a myriad of artists, musicians, and poets, and provides much of my inspiration for new work. Although it's warm and cozy in my studio, outside the world is covered in snow and ice, and I'm happy to be inside."

This is Mimi from Mimi Traillette: "This is me with Roger, the very first octopus I sewed! I made it on a plushie sewing night I had with some friends. At that time neither of us knew that many others would follow.

Janice from glaciermilk: "In this pic, I was just getting ready to have a milk'n'honey bath! Glaciermilk is fashion for the naked! Sewing through my imagination keeps me sane...I LOVE CREATING !!"

Janet from Janet Miller Designs: "Water has been a huge inspiration for me in my work, and is an element in my recent collection E N G E L Frozen Whispers. I can remember when I was little taking walks with my twin sister and my grandfather along the railroad tracks near the ocean in Dalhousie, New Brunswick. Since then, I have had an innate need to be near the water. For the last few years I have been living in Montreal, and daily I live nostalgic moments from my childhood, from certain streets I walk down to old abandoned buildings. Recently I moved near the Old Port so I am only a few minutes away from the water. I take my dog Falkor for a walk along the port every day, and when I look out my studio window I can also see the train go by!"
