Tech Update: Introducing a New Recently Listed Items Site Feature

Etsy admin/guru/spiritual leader Jared Tarbell has developed a new site feature: Recently Listed Items.

With Etsy's marketplace growing along with some sellers' concerns about the traffic jam of items being uploaded to the site, we want to do our best to show you as many fresh items as we can. Recently Listed Items will be linked to from, not surprisingly, the "Recently Listed Items" ticker on Etsy's homepage.

Check it out! It's a super fun way to "speed shop."

The Olympics start on 8/8/08!

I salute you, you remarkable people doing miraculous things with their bodies that I, for one, will never, EVER be able to do. Though I've never been to the Games myself, I must say I become a bit of an avid TV-watcher-fan-girl. I took a spin around Etsy looking for athletic-inpsired items, and you'll find those below.

All the competition in the air got me to thinking about crafting contests. We'd posted a video a while back with Lily Chin. Lisa Gentry, the world's fastest crocheter, is going for another record — fastest knitter — but I couldn't find any videos with her. Here's a video from The Guinness World Records championships with Holland's Miriam Tegels — the world's fastest knitter. It's crazy!

In related news, Instructables has an Invent-a-Sport contest. There are a few days left to enter and there aren't nearly enough crafty sports that people have created! Get over there and make up a sport around your favorite handmade activity!

Tech Update: Treasury, Chat, and Virtual Lab Server Upgrade

Good news! The Treasury, Chat Rooms, and Virtual Labs are getting a significant server upgrade. The change is being made to address a number of key performance issues caused by record high usage. If the old server was a Honda Insight, the new server is a Tesla Roadster. Yes, it's quite fast.

In order to make the change, we are temporarily suspending the creation of new Treasury lists. This will allow all the current lists to naturally expire in about three days. After all lists have expired, the server change will take place. The change itself will only take a few moments. If all is successful, the creation of new Treasury lists will once again be enabled, and we can all enjoy the performance boost.

With the current expiration schedule, the server change is looking like it will take place early Sunday morning, August 3rd. The exact time may change.

The Chat Rooms and Virtual Labs will also be moved to the new server at the same time as the Treasury. Both applications will experience about 60 seconds of downtime. All user created Chat Rooms will need to be recreated.

Site speed boost

In the face of ever-increasing traffic, Etsy’s category browsing and search functions have the unenviable task of bearing the brunt of the load. They’re among the most frequently accessed functions on the site, and they have millions and millions of Etsy listings to sort through to provide results.

They’ve been experiencing particularly difficult times lately, as the amount of traffic flowing in has surpassed what they were built to handle.

Fortunately, we’re in the process of upgrading the software and machines that power Etsy’s browse and search capabilities. We’ve just completed the first phase of this upgrade, and the results are already quite striking. Try them out -- loading speed on the categories and searches has increased dramatically.

There are still many things we’re doing to facilitate future growth, in terms of both the software and the hardware running the site. We know Etsy will continue to grow, and we’re doing our best to keep the technology growing along with it.
