Etsy International: Cécile Guérard's Top 10 List

When Maria and I (Liz, a.k.a. muka) visited Paris earlier this year, we had the pleasure of meeting Cécile Guérard at a quaint office in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. She shared with us some wonderful ideas on how to grow Etsy in the French market and showed us a bit of her artwork. We enjoyed our visit very much and thought she'd be a wonderful contributor to The Storque. Translated from the French by lilyofdesert.

I paint from my house in Normandy, two hours from Paris, where I have a workshop; I see birds alight in my garden, I hear the ocean come and go. When I don't paint, I write. I'm made of a two-stroke engine, that's just the way it is! I like what is created, what is beautiful, what offers a meaning or brings surprises. Etsy is a wonderful place to find all of this! It's cheerful, simple, warm. I love to shop from one shop to another and I'm always a little bit moved afterward; our need to create new from chaos, to bring harmony into our lives, to surround ourselves with quality products — that's a whole philosophy in itself, my philosophy.

Painting and writing: I need these two life-sustainers, and they are bound together. Etsy defends and promotes handmade work, and this is as remarkable as it is necessary! Deciding what to do, creating things based on what we are, defining ourselves through our work — this is one of the paths to freedom, right? I just finished an exhibition, but you can find my paintings and my books on my blog and see the pretty things I like there.

J'adore aller de boutiques en boutiques et j'en reviens toujours un peu émue: notre besoin de créer à partir du chaos, d'introduire de l'harmonie là où se déroule notre vie, de s'entourer d'objets de qualités: c'est toute une philosophie, ma philosophie.

Peinture et écriture : j'ai besoin de ces deux respirations et elles sont liées: Etsy défend et valorise le travail manuel et ça c'est remarquable autant que nécessaire ! Décider de ce que l'on fait, créer à partir de ce que l'on est, se réaliser à travers son travail, c'est l'un des styles de la liberté, non? They have an unparalleled freshness and spontaneity, and can be careful and elaborate, or raw and direct. They are regularly used to study and create a "grander" piece, but to me that's what makes them so desirable: their humbleness and their lack of self-importance. Artistic Endeavors: Dollhead's Favorite Collage

Collage can be executed in so many styles. I love them all, but I seem to be most attracted to the extremes.

I have collected work that uses collage in both simple and bold fashions, as well as detailed and visually complicated images. I aimed to pick original works of art because, although I love the idea of making and selling prints, one-of-a-kind pieces are so precious.

I love the contrast that collage can create, especially when the art is created with mixed media. The use of existing images or pieces of paper can balance out the imperfection of painted surfaces, pencil, and crayon marks. To me, it feels like controlled chaos sometimes; on the line between free form painterly fine art and careful graphic design compositions.

I guess it says a lot about where I'm coming from, as a commercial artist who spends many hours working on a concept with a purpose, who also needing to just shut off my brain and just allow the stream of consciousness to take over.

My choices originate from these extremes, and some step outside of the realm of traditional 2-D collage. I hope this selection inspires everyone in some way!

Tiny Decor Blog's Top 10 Eco-friendly Fabrics on Etsy

Looking for earth-friendly supplies? I found this useful post on Crafting a Green World. Tiny Decor Blog's Jackie Hernandez shares her favorite eco-friendly fabrics for your craft projects — and if you're not into making something, she notes that most of these shops have ready to use items as well. Her "original post on the Top 10 Modern, Eco-friendly Fabric Sources on Etsy was the top post on the Tiny Décor Blog in 2008 and continues to be in the top 3 posts so far in 2009." Anything that helps crafters be green — starting with sourcing supplies — is a good thing in my book. Here's Jackie's list:

In no particular order, here are the top 10 modern, eco-friendly, screen printed fabrics on Etsy:

Kalla Textiles are handprinted in Japan by designer Hitomi Kimura with water-based inks on cotton/linen blend fabric. I am personally enjoy reading the Kalla Design blog where Hitomi shares her studio, inspirations, and printing in progress.

Aunty Cookie offers limited edition screen printed fabrics by designer Shannon Lamden. Fabrics are printed with water-based inks on a linen/cotton blend. Aunty Cookie also carries adorable screen printed fabric trims.

Moyou fa brics are hand screen printed on hemp/cotton blend fabric with eco-friendly, solvent-free inks. Designer Amy Kerr creates a unique blend of Australian design and Japanese aesthetic. Learn more at the Moyou Design Blog.

Cicada Studio offers linen/cotton blend fabrics professionally printed in the USA. The newest collection Mod Quad features 4 bold geometric patterns in contemporary colors. Learn more about designer Michelle Engel Bencsko on her blog Cicada Daydream.

Hollab ee still has a few hand screen printed hemp/organic cotton blends on Etsy. At the end of last year designer Bianca van Meeuwen entered a joint venture with a couple other Australian designers to create Ink & Spindle. Her new works can be found at the Ink & Spindle shop.

The Daisy Janie offering continues to grow with a new collection due Feb/Mar 2009. The designs by Jan DiCintio are professionally printed in the USA on a linen/cotton blend.

MARAmiki designs are all hand drawn, then screen printed onto linen/organic cotton blend fabrics by designer Mara Snipes in her Chicago studio. She uses water-based, non-toxic inks and her fabrics are finished without chemicals or solvents. See all her designs on the MARAmiki website.

Umbrella Prints are hand screen printed on organic cotton/hemp blend fabrics with water-based inks by designer duo Amy Prior and Carly Schwerdt. They have added a bunch of new yummy colorways this year.

Of Paper and Thread fabrics are hand screen printed with solvent-free ink on a linen/cotton blend. Designer Danielle Smeets also shares a visual treat of in progress fabric designs at the Of Paper and Thread Blog.

Photography is a different animal than painting and sculpture. The camera gives us the chance to reach out and pluck moments from time with one satisfying, immediate click of the shutter. My Top 10 Customized Moleskines Notebooks

Take a moment and breathe across the paper. Inhale thought, idea, memory. Exhale words, brush strokes, emotion, and color. Reflect your life and the world around you onto the page.

The more saturated we become with technology, the more we seem to crave analog time. You know, a n a l o g t I m e. That little bit of quality scribble-scrawl time that acts as a kind of portable break from our fast paced lives. There is something comforting in knowing that you can reach into your pocket, your bag, or your purse and pull out a spot of safe haven for yourself. In our increasingly digital lives, handmade books remind us to appreciate the tactile beauty of an interesting binding or the unique linework of the artist, or if it's a blank journal, that we have such a thing as handwriting (whether messy or neat)! Books, zines, and comics make great holiday gifts, and so we invited Sarah Nicholls, of the Center for Book Arts, to contribute her Top 10 List.

Do not underestimate the book. Books have been the traditional container for the knowledge and ideas of a culture for centuries. The more the book speeds towards obsolescence, the more options there are for people interested in making them. The Center for Book Arts in New York presents a rotating series of exhibitions of contemporary art related to the book, in the middle of a working hand bindery and letterpress printshop. Running the studio programs here at the Center grounds me in both the history and the future of the book, and lets me work with an amazing range of artists, writers, craftspeople, and performers, all of whom want to make books.

Contemporary bookmakers come in an infinite variety of flavors, and have an almost limitless number of options available to them. Binders create contemporary adaptations of historical book structures; experiment with materials both traditional and non: leather, felt, handmade paper, rubber, wood, etc.; recycle the insides and outsides of books, and create tactile book sculptures. Artists, writers, and zinemakers can reach an audience in a portable accessible format with the book, combine digital design with hand-bound elements, play with time and pace in a comic, and expand their community by starting a press. Books whisper in the ear of a captive audience of one.

Just what *is* Waldorf?
Waldorf education was developed in Germany by a philosopher named Rudolf Steiner. He envisioned a holistic education that met the child and worked to support and nurture the child. He and Maria Montessori were contemporaries, both working in the aftermath of WWI and dealing with so many damaged German and Italian children. Steiner based the early years of his educational philosophy on the realms of fantasy and play, putting off formal learning until the age of seven, where Montessori focused on teaching children to be self-reliant and learning practical skills. The hallmarks of Waldorf toys are natural materials, minimalistic features, and open-ended playthings that inspire the imagination.

Top 10: Kits for Kids

The power of crafting with kids using kits hit me the first time I did “baking stations” with my twin nieces (age 3!) making cupcakes. Nothing fancy, just a kit of cake mix, frosting, and different sprinkle toppings. I have never seen them sit still for that long before or since — and have so much fun. Many artisans on Etsy are dedicated to sharing their craft through patterns and kits that are perfect for kids! I did some searching to find my Top 10 Kits for Kids on Etsy that will spark creativity, cultivate a love of crafting, and (blissfully) get them to sit still for just a little while!

When I started searching for kits, the sheer number of search results (almost 6000!) made it clear I needed some criteria…

Kits with a defined finished product attractive to kids. sewmelody reminded me, “Kids love to touch and try...But they also LOVE to have a finished product, and get discouraged when they don't have something to show for their efforts. Having a goal is so important. One of my daughters has always loved fabric and thread and all kinds of sewing accessories, but didn't develop a passion until she actually had a little finished pillow in her hand. She had chosen fabrics, embroidered it with a sweet message, sewed and stuffed it. She made it into a special gift for a friend. The next day I caught her SELLING pillows (yet to be made, of course) for $1 to her cousins and making out receipts! A born crafter!” ‘Nuff said.

Kits that requires only minimal tools to assemble. Nothing worse than getting all excited about doing something and then finding out you don’t have what you need!

Suitable for adult and child to do together. The point, for me, is to share the experience and spend quality time together.

Kit develops crafting skills. Plus, crafting can be a sneaky way to learn math (sewing measurements!), science (soap making!), and ecology (recycle materials, use scraps!).

Under $20 for the kit. Affordability is always key.

I picked kits for a range of ages that met my criteria and tickled my fancy. And, my fellow Etsians responding to my forum threads were so helpful in providing their perspective on what works with kids. Here are my picks and their wisdom!

Bookmaking Kit from greenchairpress, $10
Ah, the allure of childhood’s secret diary. Private thoughts in loopy cursive with hearts for dots on the i’s. What could make that better? How about writing those thoughts in a book you made? Divine!

Flat Herringbone Bracelet Kit from JadeDogBeads, $8.50
Jewelry kits are great for crafting with groups of kids, and this kit produces an awesome finished product with room for your creativity on the bead pattern you design.

[Etsy seller LeanneFDesigns leads a jewelry birthday party for 10-year-olds]

LeanneFDesigns recalls a kids' jewelry party she led: “It happened to be right before Mother's Day, and many of them made jewelry for their mothers, rather than for themselves — which I thought was wonderful! They'd work on their pieces and just babble among themselves about anything and everything — you'd think it was a woman's knitting club. They'd also eye each other's work very carefully — and they were so nice about telling each other how great their pieces were coming out.”

Jewelry isn’t just for girls. MFIPC’s 8-year-old son makes “surfer jewelry” for his friends with shark teeth and shells! But, watch out! BethChristinaDesigns innocently did a few beading parties and, once word got around, moms in need of a break were eagerly dropping off dozens of kids at her basement…

Travel Scrapbook Kit from NovelConcept2, $5.25
bigyellowdog inspired this choice with her story about making mini-scrapbooks with kids. A travel scrapbook is a perfect choice for summer vacation time!

Bluebird Birdhouse Kit from LittleBirdhouseStore, $15
A wonderful opportunity for basic woodworking, an end product that encourages nature observation, AND a chance for kids to paint it in their own style! Don’t fret about the painting. Embrace the mess, electricboogaloo learned while painting canvasses with her kids for an Ethiopia charity: “We painted them in our driveway on a hot summer day. My dog kept walking across the canvasses, my boys were going crazy with paint rollers and water, the neighbor kids accidentally rode their bikes across it a few times. It was stressful at first, then I decided you know what? It doesn't matter! My art will fit perfectly over that. Making messes is part of how the human brain learns. Playing around without worrying about the mess is the quickest and truest way to learn how paint works, how to mix colors. When adults try to control the process too much or to keep everything super clean and simple, they're limiting some of that learning. Plus it's fun. You stick the kids straight in the bath or shower afterwards, along with the brushes.”

Green Monster Soft Toy Kit from DIYFluffies, $15
Forget the monster under the bed — make this snuggly monster and put it IN the bed! I wasn’t sure about whether sewing kits were appropriate for kids — the sharp needles, the scissors... But, I was reassured by DragonflyStitches that, with supervision, even kids as young as 4 can sew quilt blocks! She says, “We started with some very nice blunt nose scissors from Fiskars. I think it's all in the expectations. I expect my kids to be able to do things and they do.”

Crochet Hedgehog Kit from AmyGaines, $10
Crochet? Knitting? Can kids really do handcrafts that require such coordination? You bet, says bubblegirlknits, who learned to knit at age 5 and has even taught her three-year-old, starting with finger knitting (check out YouTube for demos on this needle-free technique!) I loved this crochet hedgehog kit — such a cute lil cuddly!

Turtle Needle Felting Kit from woolpets, $16
There might be nothing more satisfying than taking a blob of raw material and sculpting it into something adorable. This beginner kit does just that with wool roving, and results in a perfect little turtle pet to pat.

Old Store Frame Kit from ormolu, $9.50
Is there a better way to display a snapshot of you and your best friend from camp than in a picture frame you made? Don't forget to send him or her one, too!

Decorative Magnet Kit from SunAndMoonCraftKits, $10
How are you going to display kids' paintings and collages on the fridge if you don’t have magnets? Kids can make their own with this chic, all-inclusive kit.

My tenth kit is — no kit at all! That choice was inspired by ThriftyGoodness, who showed me her blog entry on the art projects she does with her 11-year-old son. Just a stash of fabric scraps, a trusty glue stick, scissors, some posterboard, and a dose of creativity, and voila, a fabulous collage! Look in the Related Items below for some great supplies to inspire kids! Sometimes, there’s much to be said for planning not to plan at all.

We all know how hard moms work taking care of their families, but sometimes moms seem to forget that it’s important to also take care of themselves. Top 10: Americana Primitives

Many artists in the States are crafting distinctive art with a nod to this nation's folk art history. I'm interested in the artists that use this style, referred to as "primitives," and hearken all the way back to the American-British Colonial era to play with the symbols of the country's yesteryears. Austere black crows, dead presidents, star-spangled angels and totemic faces adorn art dolls, miniatures, and homey signage. Sometimes the results are sweet and idealized with a "country" quaintness, sometimes distressed and stylized.

Personally, I think primitives give a fascinating glimpse into America's collective memory of the country's early days. The style conjures the local cultures we want to preserve — be it Appalachian or New England or the prairies. Something about our nation's past binds us together: who are the American ghosts that we hold dear with their crooked smiles, patinas and rough edges?

What first started out as a quick look-see on Etsy for Americana and Primitives turned into an engrossing quest and well, I got a little "ambitious" and decided to look for my Top 10 Primitives. I could have easily picked 50 from each of the 50 states! So here are my Top 10 favorites for now. I tried to find a variety while keeping to the Americana theme... If you like these, check out the OFG team (short for Old Farmhouse Gathering).

#1 The Crow "Hand-did" Candle Mat by everydaysies, pictured above. I love how simple the lines and shapes are in this piece. This artist lives in South Carolina.

#2 Lincoln Doll Pattern

You too can make a doll of revered President Lincoln with this pattern. Get involved, yeah! By finecountryliving, who hails from Pennsylvania.

#3 Saltbox House & American Flag Stitchery

This beautiful primitive "stitchery" by mommasprims, who hails from Nebraska, points out my soft spot for colonial architecture, having grown up in a house from 1788.

#4 Americana Stars

I'm not sure why but I find these little stars really haunting. Maybe it's because they are in limbo between little creatures and inanimate stars. They look like they're wearing little pants. By needlinaround, also from Nebraska.

#5 Singing Sam

This artist crescenthilldesigns seems to really be creating his own playful twist on the Primitives style. He's from Texas.

#6 Primitive Folk Art Country Barn

ACOUNTRYWAY's birdhouse is very quaint and trimmed up nicely. A great example of a functional prim.

#7 Star Spangled Goddess

This holiday decoration by MothtoaFlameStudio gives a different impression — a Victorian take on the Primitive style. I'm really into the way it transports you back in time with the details. I can imagine historical reenactors using something like this at their 4th of July barbecues. MothtoaFlameStudio lives in California.

#8 10-foot Tin Star

amishwares hand-paints these stars which are made by Old Order Amish folks in Ohio. How proud are you to be an American?!? I think I might need to have a big old red barn to hang this on.

#9 Salute to Old Glory - Americana Tucks

blackcrowprimitives' faux firecrackers, stars and patriotic songs get me in the mood for a small town 4th of July parade. This seller is based in Hawaii.

#10 Hooked Rug with Dog 1863 Design

And lastly (but certainly not least — did I mention I had a hard time ranking these), alexandrarosie from the Lakes Region of New Hampshire offers this beautiful little rug, of cut hand-dyed wool. The design is inspired by a rug from 1863 — the year Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

Some may say that cute plush creatures are only for children. To this I say, have you seen the bit of cuddly goodness displayed in the image above?! Little plush creatures are a testament to the popularity of sites like Cute Overload. Everybody needs something adorable to look at!

My Top 10 Vintage Housewares

I love browsing vintage housewares on Etsy, and now that we have a special search for vintage items it's even easier. I'm a sucker for housewares: they're pretty and functional! Or arguably functional. Here are my top ten picks:

10. Set of 3 Frosted Jars

I appreciate that the coffee jar is the largest of the three, although the sugar jar isn't too small, either. Jars like these are great for keeping your sugar, tea, or flour in by keeping it at hand, but safe from bugs.

9. 1950s Chrome Serving Tray

This serving tray makes me wish I had fancy parties to host, with adorable hors d'oeuvres. As it is, I'll just have to use it as a place to put the mail.

8. Mustard Bathroom Scale

I had a scale like this as a kid. I also had a much more reasonably sized bum then... coincidence? Maybe not, but this vintage scale is still a nice break from all the chrome/white ones I've seen.

7. Retro Thermos and Mugs

While I don't host fancy parties, I do have picnics, and this set looks like an awesome way to cart my beverages around. It's a grown-up version of the thermos I had as a kid.

6. 1960s Mod Plastic Tray and Coasters

Continuing in the beverage theme, this tray is awesomely colorful. I'm a sucker for the matching coasters.

5. 1950's Remington Typewriter

Typewriters may be obsolete, but that doesn't make them any less awesome. They're great for sending snail-mail letters to friends (if you haven't done that in a while, I recommend it). You can even type directly onto envelopes or notecards. And if none of that interests you, it's fun to push the keys.

4. Westclox Collapsible Alarm Clock

I chose this because I'm a chronic oversleeper, and like the idea of a clock that's good looking. It might make me think twice about chucking it across the room when it goes off.

3. Brownie Box Camera

The Brownies were one of the first consumer cameras. They brought photography home to people of all ages. They're especially iconic now, as Kodak slowly backs out of the chemical film industry.

2. Pasadena Cups and Saucers

These cups are just adorable. Tea, anyone?

1. Light Up Globe

Last on the list we have my personal favorite: the light up globe. It's good to know I'll be able to find the USSR, even in the dark. And as a bonus, it's the perfect prop for your Rocky Horror Picture Show reenactments!
