Guest Curator: Tara McPherson

Tara McPherson is an artist based out of New York City. Creating art about people and their odd ways, her characters seem to exude an idealized innocence with a glimpse of hard earned wisdom in their eyes. Recalling many issues from childhood and good old life experience, she creates images that are thought provoking and seductive. People and their relationships are a central theme throughout her work.

Tara exhibits her paintings and serigraphs in fine art galleries all over the world. Named the crown princess of poster art by ELLE Magazine, she has created numerous gig posters for rock bands such as Beck, Modest Mouse, and Melvins. Her array of art also includes painted comics and covers for DC Vertigo, advertising and editorial illustrations for companies such as All Tomorrow's Parties and Spin Magazine, creating toys with KidRobot, and teaching a class at Parsons in NYC. After watching one of this season's Project Runway contestants flaunt amazing fascinators, headbands and other fantastic hair accessories week after week, I decided I needed to get in on the action. I did some searching for the perfect fascinator on Etsy, and I found so many beautiful options that it actually took me a couple weeks to finally buy one.

After much deliberation, I finally purchased a fascinator from VieModerne. It arrived earlier this week and I haven't taken it off since. Check out this sweet headband that's also listed in her shop — who doesn't love black and white polka dots, with a dash of red?

Etsy Finds: Fascinators!

My fascinator, ah, fascination (sorry!) began with this photo of the lovely Sherbet Tone from the Wardrobe Remix* group on Flickr:

I searched them out on Etsy, and lo! Fascinators as far as the eye can see. If you want the one pictured (from houndztooth), you'd better move quickly because the girl sells her amazing feathered headgear so fast, I can never seem to snag one! Do a search on Etsy and you'll find a bunch of results.

And what exactly is a fascinator? Well, it's like a hat but less substantial and more of a decorative flight of fancy. In short, it's a hair accessory often made with "feathers, flowers, or beads" according to Wikipedia. Fascinating!
