Etsy Finds: Making Clothes, Kissing, Ice Skating

I've just begun to make my own clothing, so I haven't made any dresses (yet). When Avery (of EmpireEmpire) was here visiting Etsy and teaching me how to sew from a pattern, he said, "Clothing is a form of sculpture that's wearable. It's a sculpture that I make and that people will cry, kiss and dance in."

And this dress, according to tiinateaspoon, is also good for ice skating.

The red dress by desirapesta is another soft sculpture one might ice skate or cry in.

Etsy gossip, hot and fresh! Here's what's been kickin' at the Etsy Labs recently.

- While giving a tour of the Etsy Labs, bethela stumbled upon some Brawdville performers (doing their show in the above photo) getting changed "backstage" in the engineering room. (Also known as "the engineer hole.") Awk-ward!

- On Monday, Kelly (aka kfarrell) found a piece of poo stinking up the engineering room. Retribution from Brawdville, or this furry culprit (aka Christine's dog Satchel)?

- Rumors of sexy doings inside Magestica's paper mache narwhal head continue to spin out of control. (Ed. note: NOT A RUMOR.)

- Equally thrilling, though even more based in fantasy, screenshots of a dummy admin panel were posted off-site, much to the "excitement" of some Etsians.

- Scandal! It was recently announced that the Etsy Labs has been drinking (gasp!) mere tap water in place of the bottled goodness we normally consume. The Poland Spring dispenser was surruptitiously filled with tap water, and since no one noticed the change, we're putting our future H20 consumption to a vote.

- We had visitors to the Labs! magnoliastreet and her boyfriend Andres came by from Chicago and were joined by Narchi.

- CAT FIGHT! Admins Mary and Danielle had a "Blythe off," competing to see who had the better Blythe Treasury. Both Treasuries were pretty good, so no winner was crowned.

- After discovering that Vanessa's computer had a 2001: Space Odyssey robot voice and would dictate anything typed, many hours were spent making it say curse words. Good times!

- On a semi-political note, Matt sat next to Al Gore's daughter at a wedding.

- Pete finally made Anda an honest woman and they were officially married on November 7th, 2007.

- Etsy admin TeenAngster, HeyMichelle and MaryMary are P ainfully Hip. (Scroll down to find us. We love our Wardrobe Remix!)

Representillion with Majestica

Reptillion Overlords, represent! We want to possess the feeble minds of New York City inhabitants to unearth their treasured marketing schemes! We will take over their souls! And maybe unwind with a few drinks at a bar on the LES. Representillion!

Majestica got all lean, green and mean at Etsy Labs this Wednesday when they turned several hundred yards of green spandex into several Reptillion (or astral lizard) costumes. They kept the Etsians in the online Workshop amused (if you were sewing along, then email the storque@etsy.com with your photos). Watch the video to see metamorphosis...

Etsy Gossip!

World-reknowned architect Maya Lin visited the Etsy Labs to talk shop about websites with Rob aka Rokali. Rumor has it that she's working on a new top-secret project and counts Jared's visualization work on Etsy as inspiration. She remarked that she loves Etsy and was seen carrying a cool bag made of recycled Cambodian shopping bags. She's excited for Halloween and is making her daughter's costume herself — we told her to check out the Halloween Costume Contest! (All celeb-hounding joking aside, we were really excited to meet her and we admire her work.)

Cool-hunters from A&E were busting down the doors of Etsy Labs, looking for epi-centers of Brooklyn hotness this morning. Matt and Charles aka winenutnyc turned them on to buying handmade and why people are so passionate about the Etsy community.

The Portland Team forerunners sprinted over to Etsy Labs after their red-eye flight from PDX. How can Mary, Adrienne, and Leah be so wide awake after their flight? Could it be the hugs from Rokali that keep them bright-eyed and bushy-tailed??? Littleputbooks, Misspurl, mmmfiber, prettythingsjewelry, Leahpellegrini, Urbana, and Daisychains will all be representing and selling their fine handmade goods on Friday, October 26 at their trunk show at the Labs.

Majestica shocked and entertained those brave Etsians who followed along their reptilian costume-making Online Workshop last night. The workshop lasted into the wee hours and then the lizards creeped out to invade NYC with their slithering ways. They did not return until 5am. Unidentified sources tell us that the green spandex — the pre-owned material scavenged for the costumes — reeked of cat urine. For those of you making your reptilian costumes at home, submit your photos via storque@etsy.com.

Admin Julieincharge has scandalized the community by making giant Etsy drapes...in the nude. She jury-rigged a handmade Etsy.com billboard of sorts, capitalizing on the large, drafty windows of the Etsy Labs and the main Brooklyn thoroughfare on which the Labs are situated. Passerby on Flatbush Ave have a good view of the 6th fl. With ever shorter daylight hours and ever longer work days for Etsy admin, that means more night-time, glowy free advertising!

We have also used the drapes as backdrops when we go to craft fairs and events, such as this shot from CraftyBastards.

Zoning out with Majestica

Do you know what a zone is? Mixen Dixon lays it down for you in this short introductory video about the Majestica Collective, Etsy's first participants in our Visiting Artists Program. Come join the entire Majestica Crew at the Etsy Labs to create Spandex Reptilian Uniforms and perform a large-scale impromptu parade. The more people the better. The whole event will be filmed by Mixen Dixon and screened during the Friday movie night.

Etsy Labs will be hosting their first annual Halloween party. There will be Handmade Music Performances, a Rap-fashion performance with Nameless (Ruffeo from Ruffeo Hearts Lil' Snotty), an anti-fashion showcase of outstanding work by Empire Empire and Ruffeo Hearts Lil' Snotty, and Mixen Dixon will be performing their findings in a performance titled The Zones We Put Ourselves In 1.1 which will have powerpoint, a short film, a talk show and more.

Majestica x Etsy Labs: Artist Residency 2007 Calendar

Hey, we’re Majestica and we’re visiting Etsy Labs for the week. They’ve invited us to come do what we do and see if we can’t inspire some new moves in the zone. Majestica is comprised of three different creative parts, sort of like voltron, but not animated, although we are sci-fi. Our “collective” sort of works like a good sandwich. Empire Empire is the bread, Ruffeo Hearts Lil' Snotty is the veggies, and Mixen Dixon is the Mayo…on both slices. The sandwich is toasted, as we like it. It tastes like threads, it smells like action, and it feels like rancid caviar in your mouth.

We have zone catchers. We don’t want you to see them right now. Have you ever seen the Tacoma Dome? It’s ok if you haven’t. Most people actually don’t even know what the Tacoma Dome is. But that’s just fine, because the following sentence shall explain it. The Tacoma Dome is the largest Wooden Dome Structure there is.

Next Visiting Artists at Etsy: Majestica

We are proud to announce that Seattle-based collective Majestica will be the next participants in our Visiting Artists Program. Majestica will be working and teaching here at the Etsy Labs from October 21st - October 28th. Over the course of the week they will be holding seminars, online workshops, and live performances, as well as designing and producing a limited edition line in collaboration with Etsy.

About Majestica: Majestica is a name that serves three distinct yet inseparable entities: Empire Empire, Ruffeo Hearts Lil' Snotty, and Mixen Dixon. Hailing from Seattle, Majestica develops multi-faceted spectacles, clothing, objects, events, and performance. By forging craft, clothing, visual art, performance, music, video, and pop culture into a disjointed and fantastic whole, Majestica forms a frenetically honest experience and a testament to pure creativity, satire, and collaboration. From group construction of reptile costumes, to the public sculpture/ performance of a house made from recycled carpet remnants, to high-end Anti Fashion shows, Majestica collapses contemporary culture onto itself while inspiring the public towards their own do-it-yourself projects.

About the Visiting Artist Program: Etsy's Visiting Artist Program is designed to give artists the space, materials, and time to expand their practice and explore professional outlets for their art. During this one week residency artists are encouraged to give online and offline workshops, hold events, and produce limited edition art.

The artist collective has enjoyed a recent resurgence, evidenced by the success of groups like Fort Thunder, Forcefield, and the Royal Art Lodge. We chose Majestica for the Visiting Artist Program because they expand this model beyond the insular gallery scene, and make it accessible to everyone. Their ambition is only enhanced by their positive energy and socio-environmental conscience.

8:00 - 12:00: Majestica Performance experience at The Etsy Halloween Celebration, including: Anti Fashion Show, "The Zones We Put Ourselves In ; 1.1," Fantastical Puppet Rap Fashion Show including live drawing, gigantic puppet creations, back up dancers, sky guys and mayhem.

Raining Success at the Bumbershoot Festival

Etsy recently travelled to Seattle to attend the smorgasbord of festivals: Bumbershoot! The festival, now in it's 37th year, drew together over 200 live musical, theater and comedy acts as well as hundreds of rock poster artists and crafters for three days at Seattle Center. Matt and Anda from Etsy were pleased to meet many of the talented vendors there. Check out our video featuring the off-beat photoshop stylings of Ruffeo Hearts Lil Snoty:
