Etsy Finds: Stocking Stuffers for Big and Small

Growing up, opening the stocking was always one of my favorite parts of the holidays. It was notoriously crammed full, spilling out the top, and perfectly misshapen from its original form. No matter all the tiny surprises I found inside, I could always rely on a fresh orange and penny hiding underneath to fill out the toe. Etsy Finds: Smells Like Teen Spirit

Grunge, the music and style movement of the Pacific Northwest in the early 1990s, was the return of dirty rock 'n' roll, which many said had died during the synth-drenched '80s. It promised a gritty antidote to music industry formulas, and to the perceived greed of the former decade.

The grunge style fuses the practical aspects of living in a rainy region (lumberjack woolens and plaid) with punk classics, like combat boots, and over the top groovy thrift store finds from the 1960s (polyester, psychedelic, Jackie-O sunglasses, mod). Tribal tattoos and facial piercings (yes, a nose ring was shocking at the time) were like underground signals among Gen Xers seeking unity against the establishment. Silver jewelry with Balinese or Celtic patterns referenced body art, and the peace symbol made its way back into our lives in response to the Gulf War. One of the great style icons of the Grunge era was Courtney Love (of the band Hole), who popularized babydoll dresses, Mary Jane shoes and women with rock guitars.

Today's Etsy Finds are inspired by Grunge's comeback at this fall's New York Fashion Week, and to Etsy sellers, who embody the indie spirit that is rooted in this style.

Happy Bastille Day to our French friends!

Today we travel to France to visit the studio of illustrator Anne Cresci, a.k.a. matilou. She gave French journalist
Fabrice Guilloud and her husband Laurence, who made this video, a tour of her Lyon workshop. Illustrating children's books was just her start — after she discovered Etsy, she branched out to selling prints of her drawings, then jewelry and other items.

Anne clearly revels in the pink and girly — but her work is also a bit melancholy. A touch of darkness gives her sweet drawings their edge.

Illustrer des livres pour enfants n'a été que le début , à partir du moment où elle a découvert Etsy, elle s'est mise à vendre des impressions de ses illustrations ainsi que des bijoux illustrés et pleins d'autres petits objets.

Anne a un style très girly, mais son travail a un petit côté mélancolique, une touche de noirceur qui lui donne une profondeur supplémentaire.

High School Fashion Designer Wins Gold Key

High school graduation never looked this good. As his senior project, Nathan Hoeffel put together his own fashion show with his original designs. His work earned him the prestigious Gold Key Award, and he recently traveled to New York City for the award ceremony at Carnegie Hall. On Etsy, this teen from Indiana is starting a new shop under his moniker nathangerard. You can see more of his clothing in his first shop thishotmess.

I have always been interested in design — it's just a part of who I am. When I realized that I could get this sense of creative power and fulfillment from clothing, I decided to dive right into it, going online and looking up every article on the subject. I used to search tirelessly to figure out which brand or designer would set the trends for the world in the coming seasons. Only after all this searching for the "cult-status" designer was I able to realize that one voice does not echo louder than the rest. It is instead a collective melody, sung from the industry, that defines a season. If you are able to follow closely and keep your thumb on the pulse of things, determining what comes next will occur naturally.

Now, as I look back on this, I realize how trivial this search was. The truth of the matter is simple: if you can make your customer fall in love with what you like, no matter the season, you will always have a business and it will always be current for your client. Once I realized this, my perspective on garment-making changed forever.

As a senior in high school, I finally decided to give this clothing thing a go for a school project. I created a recycled jacket and pair of pants, fully painted and embellished with all sorts of cool recycled objects. As an independent art student, it was my job to take a basic theme and translate it into a piece with my own personal touch.
When the class was assigned the project simply titled "Line," I began thinking immediately of zillions of lines wrapping around the body. I am a clothing designer, after all, and this concept inevitably morphed into a dress. Soon, it all came together in my mind, a dress made entirely of tulle. The bodice, I decided, would be wrapped in black Chinese braid, and the bottom would consist of layers and layers of tulle, thirty-five to be exact.

As soon as I sketched the piece, I immediately began construction. First came the bottom piece with the ruffles, approximately twenty yards of tulle came together to complete it. Then came the bodice, finished off with around ten yards of Chinese braid and a big jacket zipper in the back. The piece took around thirty hours to create, and as I am a confessed workaholic, it was completed for school the next Monday. I brought the dress into school, ironically covered with a big trash bag. I prayed that the material, which is as flimsy as a tissue, would not rip.

The unveiling of the dress was set to occur in fifth period, and before I could even get into the room, my art teacher had called in the principle, vice principle and all the ladies in the front office and guidance office. I brought the piece out on a mannequin, from which I had based the pattern, and the room was silent. Then came swoons from the women exclaiming its magnificence and "Cher-like" quality.

The piece was displayed in the front halls until it was time for the local Scholastic Art and Writing Awards which are held throughout the country. I entered the piece and was thrilled when I received the news that it had won a Gold Key Award, the highest level. I then found out that my portfolio had won Gold Key as well.
At the ceremony, I was shocked when I learned that my tulle dress had also won the prestigious American Vision Award, which meant that the piece would be forwarded to New York on the national level.

In English class a few weeks later, my art teacher came rushing in, exclaiming that I had won a Gold Key on the national level for my dress. I learned that it was to be displayed in Carnegie Hall in New York City, my favorite city in the world. I was ecstatic, I knew this meant a trip to the "Big Apple."

Considering the fact that I was on a high from my new award, I decided to take on a risky project. I planned to put together a collection for a senior show— a project usually done by seniors in college. I decided to aim for a collection of around eighteen looks with evening and ready-to-wear pieces.

I began with the concept of a black and white sensory overload. This soon developed into what was described as "ballerina meets Wall Street" by one of my friends. I knew that if I was going to hand make every single piece of clothing, I would have to do what felt right without going off of sketches.

This collection is my first, and is perhaps the purest expression of what I believe. The most important thing a piece of clothing can do is help a woman look like the most beautiful, sophisticated and empowered version of herself. This collection was not about theatrics or some over the top exploitation of a woman, it was about pieces in a wardrobe that make a woman feel good about herself.

Because the collection morphed into one with multiple textures and fabric weights, i.e. fur, organza, plastic and tulle, it did not seem fitting to label it as a collection tied to a particular season. This is where the title, 001. came from. In today's climate, it is especially important to be able to pull a piece of clothing off the rack and recognize the flexibility of that piece. You may be in Palm Beach in December and need a flowy dress, or you may be in New York in December and need a big fur coat. You can get either of those pieces from this one collection. Using a number instead of seasons also allowed me to be spontaneous in my design.

For college I plan to study visual communications at the IUPUI Herron School of Art in Indianapolis and continue my fashion business on the side, believe me, this is just the beginning!

Pretty in Pink: Prom Dreams

Ah, prom: What a memorable experience! When I think back to my senior prom, I'm reminded of the many sweet details that made it all come together. Handmade Confessional: Madison Brunoebleir

Saturday, June 7th, marks the 7th Indie Craft Experience (or ICE), kicking off in Atlanta, Georgia from 11am - 6pm in Centennial Olympic Park. In addition to an amazing assortment of handmade goodies, ICE offers crafting workshops, vegan baked goods, live bands and a clothing swap benefiting local charities.

Organizers Shannon Mulkey and Christy Petterson, (who also stay busy producing the Starlets of Craft Calendar), will be on hand running the show and representing their lines, Patina and a bardis, respectively.

If you haven't heard, Monday Craft Night is back! And, to help keep you in the loop, The Etsy Labs is now on Meetup.com! So if you're in the NYC area, dust off your crafty pants and come by June 2nd, from 4-8pm. This week: learn the Pamphlet Stitch, an ever useful bookbinding technique. Or, if you'd rather work on your own project, you are welcome to use our sewing machines, Gocco machines, buttonmaker and paper cutters. Just bring your own supplies! We've got the younger generation on the brain this week. Whether they're graduating and entering the "real world" or about to launch into the blissful summer vacation, teens today have their finger on the pulse of fashion and self-expression. Some teens are serious about finding unique vintage and handmade items, and turn to Etsy for a global marketplace of options. Etsy seller thishotmess, an Hoosier high school trend-setter with his sights on design school in NYC, gave us the low-down on WTW (what teens want). Listen up: this is the voice of the future!

When it comes to shopping and fashion, teens today are highly influenced by the media surrounding them. However, there are a select number who decide to make their own decisions and stand on their own two feet, disregarding any negative influence received from the media. These are the influential and experimental teens that currently hunt the pages of Etsy for incredible finds that they know will help them stand out in a crowd for reasons other than having on the newest hoodie from Abercrombie. Teens and tweens are often bombarded with celebrity fashion and mass-produced clothes with little originality, but that’s where we come in! In every issue of Kiki we leave a space blank so readers can create their own “inspiration page,” but sometimes one page just isn’t enough. I like the idea of taking something old and making it new again, so I especially love the repurposed vintage pattern on Theothersister’s notebook.

This is by far the best camera camera case I’ve ever seen. I love the juxtaposition of new vs. old technology; placing a teeny tiny digital camera in an older-automatic-looking case. Unfortunately, they’re currently all sold out, so until Hine has more, perhaps her camera brooch will hold you over.

SmarmyPants makes the most delicious looking pincushions. I love absolutely everything about this one: the frosting, the sprinkles, the whipped cream, the striped strawberry on top, even the tiny hand stitches in matching thread.

Going “green” can be somewhat intimidating, but a great way to start is carrying a reusable lunch bag. This one by parischicboutique is great because it’s simple, chic, sophisticated, and eco-friendly. Who knew a lunch bag could be so many things? Visez Vert!

The artist behind vmdesigns was inspired by her own tween daughter when creating this quirky necklace, and it definitely shows. It’s creative, colorful, sparkly, and personalized. What more could a tween want?

These rings by soop just make me happy, and I’m sure they would do the same for any tween or teen out there. You can literally create a whole farm on your fingers.

Roselabiche creates designs with a balance between the “wow factor” and the everyday wear and tear on a garment. Her “Amelie” design definitely has the wow factor, and it’s hand sewn as well as machine washable, not to mention totally unique. It could quite possibly be the world’s best t-shirt!

No two of GuerillaEmbroidery’s hair-ties are ever alike. All are embroidered on 100% wool and finished with hand sewn details. If you love the design, but don’t have long hair, she also makes beautiful brooches. She definitely has something for everyone.

I love fabricfarrago’s thumbtacks covered in fabric, especially these sushi ones. They’re a great way to add some life to a boring bulletin board.

What’s not to love about PaisleyChainsaw’s necklace featuring a lego shark eating a Snickers bar? Not much, not much at all.

And finally, I think this vintage jacket from sunshinecitylassie’s store speaks for itself. It’s as though it was custom made for the magazine! I snatched this one up quickly, and we’re going to take turns wearing it in the office.

Featured Buyer: Call for Teen Crafters from Craft Guru Cathie Filian

This week's Featured Buyer is Cathie Filian, host and executive producer of Creative Juice on HGTV and the DIY network, craft designer, author and all around crafty lady. She has chosen some of the coolest items on Etsy that fit with the casting for her new teen and young adult crafting show. (Interested? Read on to see how you could be featured!) Here's Cathie.

I have been crafty my whole life. I began sewing when I was 8, glittering when I was 13 and baking by the time I turned 18. 37 years later I have spun those sparkly threads and a high-def camera into a full time creative career, producing how-to television and books.

When I got the idea for my new “Untitled - Teen Craft Show” and started thinking about the giant task of casting, my first thought was Etsy! I knew Etsy would be the first stop because of all the fabulously talented artists and crafters that are here.

So here it goes! I am thrilled to announce that my production company, Two Bees and a Pea, is casting young adult and teen crafters (teens to 28 years old) for a new "untitled" teen craft show. This show will be guest based — so you could be the star of the show.

We are seeking crafty guests from all over the USA and will begin the process with DVD submissions. (The DVD's are strictly for casting purposes.) Fear not if you don't have access to a video camera. Just send a photo of yourself (big smile!) holding or showing off your handmade items. (Editorial note: This would be the perfect time to do Your Handmade Story! See GiantDwarf's video for a good example.)

Here are a few guidelines: your crafts should be current, hip, cutting edge — think Etsy, Urban Outfitters, Anthropology, Gossip Girl, Project Runway, MTV! You can make anything: room decor, jewelry, clothing, soap, knitted and crochet goods, lip balm, art, etc. The most important thing is that you know your stuff and can explain how you make it in a clear and fun way.

Here are a few hand picked items from Etsy that fit into the show's theme and are just plain cool. Look for all of the guidelines for submission at the end of this article!

The charms that seller mylavaliere picked are so fun. I just want to scoop this necklace up.

I have a sweet spot for seller sophiassweetspot. Her designs are hand painted and I love the way she blends trinkets with her paintings.

This ring is a favorite of mine. I love the graphic bird and vibrant orange. missficklemedia really has her finger on the pulse.

Seller JamieKeiles really knows how to re-craft books. This cuff is perfect for a trip to the library.

Hoodies are a staple fashion item for me! I adore seller aorta’s octopus hoodie.

I love this wallet by kittyempire3. The sweet shape of the deer and fantastic topstitching is perfect for carting around a few bills.

This book bag from seller ThePeach is loaded with personality and practicality. She also has many pretties for dressing up cupcakes!

Oh how I do adore Project Runway! Seller matsudabunch blends pop culture with charming style! Love it!

When I saw this in ChristineRenee’s store I had to laugh! My sister is really into romance novels and is starting write one of her own — this would be perfect for her.

Posters! HeroDesignStudio has some fantastic designs. I just love the mustard yellow on this Elvis Costello poster.

Robot art is cool and seller johnwgolden has so many different designs that you could decorate every room with his art.

Everyone should pop by seller PillowMonsters' shop. They have the most adorable and whimsical pillows around. Isabella can be adopted for a small fee.

Pencils and pens will always be close at hand with the adorable zipper case by seller tamar.

I love the aged screen print by seller MoxieMadness. This little ipod cozy has so much flair and the construction is wonderful. Check out the sew a go-go t-shirt they have.

You can really impress a teacher with this hand knit apple protector. Jacquelineknits has loads of fun things in her shop.

Here's more info on the guidelines for your audition video!

1. Have high energy and be yourself. State your name, where you are from, how long you have been crafting and what your craft project is. Try to hold your project in your hand or have it next to you and briefly explain to us how you made it. You can show a step or two on how you made it if you want.

2. Try not to shake the camera (using a tripod helps), and make sure you have lots of light so we can see you.

3. Fashion tips for the camera: please don't wear prints, all black (even if you are goth), white or red. Tattoos, elaborate hair dos, and punky attire are just fine.

4. Videos should be no longer than 3 minutes and should be submitted on DVD only. Tapes cannot be viewed. On the DVD please include your name, your craft, email, city, phone number and age if you are under 18.

Lauren Mechling aka laurenxxx is a teen novelist whose books present our younger cohorts with a bit of female daring dashing do, part Eloise, part Nancy Drew — with a modern twist. I am Lauren Mechling. When I am not writing teen fiction (www.socialclimberbooks.com) I am doing Very Important Things, namely going on Etsy and ordering presents for other people and then giving them to myself. In the past month I have been the lucky recipient of a vintage cameo ring to kill for, and a stack of gold promise rings that were supposed to be for my little sister except I conveniently forgot she is allergic to gold before I pulled the trigger on the PayPal page. Oops!

Anyway, back to the other thing I do. I’m writing a series of teen books for Delacorte about Claire Voyante, the most loveable half-French girl detective you will ever meet. Seriously, if you want to try and find a more loveable half-French girl detective, be my guest.

Since I’m suffering from post-Black Friday Etsy shopping fatigue, Claire’s going to step in and do my work for me. What I did I tell you? Loveable up the wazoo, that girl.

My grandmother Kiki gave me a cameo necklace for my 15th birthday, and not to give the entire plot of my life away or anything, but lets just say it completely turned my life upside down. Now I love anything cameo-related, and this horse cameo ring by wbrown77 is pretty covetable, don’t you think?

This chimp wall graphic by oneupdesigns is admittedly pretty groovy, and it’s probably intended for people who get excited about stemless wine glasses and sit on see-through chairs, but there’s no reason it doesn’t belong on my 8-year-old brother Henry’s wall.

This Sartre for Beginners by maxman tile is perfect for my mother, who isn’t French but thinks she is.

Now I’m sort of annoyed that I am only a fictional character and some “real” person is going to get to live with this awesome Diana Ross clock by retrograndma.

Nothing, but nothing, is more fun than visiting my crabby-fabulous grandmother Kiki at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. If I had this bumblebee-ish bowl by CircaCeramics, I’d pocket some of the curried pecans from the hotel’s Bull and Bear Bar and keep a stash in my room.

Full disclosure: I am not a cat person. Neither is my author. In fact, cats make her sneeze. But she has been spending a lot of time with a certain nearly-hairless cat as of late. And this certain nearly-hairless cat does not make her sneeze. He deserves this adorable Catnip-filled fishy toy by jezzi4ever. End of story.

What is it with all these cats? Next thing I know I’m going to look in the mirror and discover I’ve become a cat. Let’s leave the analyzing to the weird shrinks who live in the NYU faculty building that my family calls home. All I can say is I think this customized picture is adorable. And if cats make you sneeze you can send the artist a picture of your prized cockatoo bird or whatever.

Kiki might say this bag is a bit “tawdry,” but then again, what doesn’t she say that about? I am married to my vintage red Schwinn bicycle, and I could see myself stuffing any number of things in this cute tote bag by andyeatsonlycandy. I’d just have to remember to leave it with the bellhop when I visit her.

If this pin wasn’t custom-made for me then, well, it should have been. I’ve been obsessed with Agatha Christie ever since the beginning of time, and I am over the moon about this crazy pin by ptierneydesigns, which, in addition to a photo of Miss Marple (okay, it’s an actress, but we fictional characters aren’t sticklers about this kind of thing), features a teabag charm, a red herring, and a replica of The Moving Finger. C’est formidable!

I’d like to own this “Claire Voyant” doll by TheOddFactory, if only to keep it out of public view. I’m not the vainest girl on the block, I swear, but Andy Shuttleworth might be reading this, so let the record show that I don’t have squiggly lines and sequins growing on my stomach. Promise.
