I've always relished flipping through decor magazines, wedding design blogs, and Etsy's Weddings Category, making mental notes with my inner wedding planner for my own imaginary big day. Even when that wedding fever isn't burning as strong, I love looking at all the creative new takes and tiny clever details offered on Etsy to pull off a tailored event from start to finish.

UK Edition: Interview With bonbiforest

As your enthusiastic ambassador here in the UK, it's my pleasure to introduce you to some members of our local Etsy community. Lee May Foster, a.k.a. bonbiforest, answered some questions from her outpost in Cornwall.

Without further ado, welcome to the wild world of bonbiforest.

Tell us a wee bit about yourself; your name, location, affiliations, personal stuff.
My name is Lee May Foster and I am an artist and maker of things living and working by the sea in deepest darkest Cornwall. I make lots of different things, from screenprinted tees, accessories and paper goods, to paintings and drawings that I turn into art prints. I love to make jewellery, too.

All of my screenprinted designs and jewellery have their roots in my drawings and paintings, which feature many a critter, creature and scape of trees, sea and sky. I like to explore patterns, rhythms and stories, and the connection of people to nature. The wild world shapes us and we shape it. You will see that I like shapes and I like colours.

In the past I have worked with Bat For Lashes, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, and Urban Outfitters, and my jewellery and clothing has been seen in Grazia, Look, Marie Claire, The Guardian and The Independent amongst others.

How did you begin your foray into the world of designing/making?

Completely by accident! I studied fine art painting at the University of Brighton, which was great for making me very self-motivated, but not so good for the job opportunities!

I was really skint one Christmas and decided to get some cheap H&M tees and stencil little birds and phrases on them as gifts. They were well received and I had a light bulb moment, taught myself how to screenprint and went from there.

My boyfriend was learning how to make websites at the time, so he used my fledgling business as a guinea pig and made me an online shop. I also had a break when my friend Natasha Khan of Bat For Lashes asked me to make her first-ever tour tees. We were all kind of doing the right thing, in the right place, at the right time.

How are you inspired by where you live?

I live in a rural part of Cornwall, in a little fishing village on the south coast, and I work from a barn at my parents' farm a short distance away. I own a horse and, because of this, I spend a lot of time outside in all weathers and find myself surrounded by nature.

I see all kinds of birds and critters on a regular basis — buzzards and garden birds, pheasants, owls and foxes, and so many rabbits and toads. I recently found deer tracks in the field, which was almost too much excitement! On a clear night you can see so many stars that you can make out the Milky Way! All of this feeds into my work. I'm a lucky lady indeed.

What else inspires you?
Other artists inspire me a lot. I like reading about what inspires them to create, and I have inspiring friends and family who are passionate about all sorts of different things: music, film, books, horses, sport... I think I find passion in people really inspiring.

What handmade possession do you most cherish?

My engagement ring! My beau and I got it custom made for me by Etsy seller OneStoneNewYork last summer and I love it so much. It has a Herkimer diamond stone and white topaz and is a perfect mix of vintage and contemporary styling.

Apart from creating things, what do you do?

My horse, Lauder, keeps me pretty occupied! I ride him nearly every day and compete in British dressage competitions. I like the discipline of dressage and the fact that, even if I am feeling lazy or unmotivated, there is a being that needs looking after and exercising. It's a great excuse to get outside too!

Apart from that I like to spend time with friends in the pub, going out dancing and walks with my beau when the weather is nice.

How do you promote your work?
I love Twitter! It's such a fast and easy way to connect with so many people. I also advertise on a few blogs to keep the word out there and the odd bit of magazine press really helps, too. Design fairs and craft shows are great for spreading the word locally. I give my business cards to everyone who comes within a sniff of my stall, whether they buy or not!

Do you have any advice for artists who are new to Etsy?

Well, I'm not sure I am qualified to give out much in the way of advice, other than be brave and tell everyone you know about your handmade adventure: word of mouth advertising is free and it works! Tweeting about your newly listed or sold and re-listed items also reminds people about your shop and your work.

If you want to make being an artist your day job, you have to put it before everything. For years I worked in an awful job, but when people asked me what I did I told them I made stuff. This allows people to think of you as an artist, not a telephone survey monkey! Just keep at it. It's not always easy and there are plenty of very steep learning curves along the way, but really, it's so worth it in the end.

I met up with Emily Zych, a.k.a. whichgoos e, deep in the magical forests of Maryland, where she finds twigs and vines for the fanciful crowns she makes. This wood nymph's delightful creations are inspired by Greek mythology, pagan folklore and expressive Romanticism.

The Collectors: themefragrance's Birds

I just love seeing what folks are collecting. I guess I feel it tells us just a little bit about what inspires them, what they love, and what they choose to surround themselves with in their homes. Today I'm delighted to present the next installment in an ongoing series here on The Storque: The Collectors. First presented on my own little blog, the rikrak studio, it's 11 and a half quick questions with a wonderful artist on what they're collecting (apart from their art supplies!). Hope you'll just love this fabulous and vibrant bird collection with the talented themefragrance.

What a wonderful time of year! Sunshiney warm afternoons, beloved sweater-weather evenings, and the vivid colors of summer transforming into those sumptuous autumn hues. For me, it’s nature at its loveliest!

This is also the time in the calendar when I look for ways to bring the outdoors indoors, something I know so many of us universally love about interior design. As we cozy up our homes and indoor spaces, this month’s gorgeous bird collection brings the joy of the vibrant woodlands and the spirit of natural history alive inside. Here’s a wonderful collection interview to inspire us.

Where (do you find them?): Antique stores, gifts, Etsy.
Where (do you keep them?): I live in an old brick house in Brooklyn that has six mantelpieces, and I rotate all my collections on them. 
What (piece would you like to add?): Bird prints from Etsy shops (so far I’ve collected prints by geninne and mincingmockingbird) .
Why (do you love them?): You can't have too many! The variety keeps you going!  
Which (one is your favorite?): My lovebird, Buddha (the real one).
What (else do you collect): Antique doll parts, typography blocks, hands, old magazines, perfume bottles, postcards, children’s books.

Like the modern perfumer she is, I love the way Elizabeth’s collection so aptly mixes design and modern handicraft with the natural world. Aren’t the rich and variegated hues of these lovely birds just gorgeous atop the classic white mantles of her brick home? Elizabeth’s brilliant use of color and hand-picked historical elements brings nature indoors not only with her beloved bird collection, but also in her delightfully vibrant shop. Like the splashes of antique history in her collection, Elizabeth’s work builds on the traditional to craft fresh, modern perfumes with enticing organic scents. How-Tuesday: Rustic Wedding Cake Stand from OnceWed

Once Wed is the kind of wedding blog that consistently makes me drool. Their featured one-of-a-kind receptions rely heavily on vintage and handmade, from the capelets to the guest books. For this week's How-Tuesday, Once Wed's contributor lalalaurie shares an easy-to-follow cake stand project that would instantly transform a tablescape from generic to woodland-magical.

What You’ll Need:

A Cross-Cut Wood Plaque (round or oval)
A Cross-Section of a Tree Limb (Make sure the top and bottom are parallel)
Titebond Ultimate Wood Glue (or a similar extra strong wood glue)
A Large Wood Clamp

Instructions:
Cross-cut wood plaques can be found in your local craft store or online at Hofcraft. They come in a variety of sizes ranging from 5 inches to 12 inches in diameter. They are usually found in the section with the wood-burning kits and other wood crafts. They are clean, sanded and ready to use.

1. Take your tree limb section and wipe the cut surface clean. Put a generous amount of extra strong wood glue on the surface.

2. Place the limb section in the center of the wood plaque's back side and press down firmly. Wipe away any excess glue with a clean, damp cloth.

3. Place the two joined pieces in a wood clamp and let dry for at least one hour. If you don’t have a wood clamp, you can stack a few heavy books on top of your pedestal until it’s dry.

4. Use your pedestals to display cakes and desserts or use as a base for a centerpiece. If you want to place food directly on the wood surface, coat it first with a food-safe wood sealer. If you would like the wood to keep its natural color, place a piece of parchment paper beneath your cake or dessert.

From Seedling to Sachet: Growing Your Own Wedding

My husband, Alexander, is a librarian and musician. We met at a show that a mutual friend threw for my birthday and had invited his band, Ponies in the Surf, to play. I remember calling my dad that night and saying, "I met the boy I'm going to marry!" Little did he know then he'd be planting the seedlings that would furnish our entire wedding menu.

I am a crafter of recycled woolens at mosey, but I also have a small line of wedding goodies (cake toppers, boutonnieres, simple dresses), so when it came time to start planning my wedding, I knew I would be obsessing over the tiny details. I have been crafting full time for a few years, and I really wanted to make my wedding a handmade event. Almost everything was handmade, handpicked, handsewn and handcrafted. We rounded up a number of friends who were artists and bakers, farmers and gardeners to help make this our perfect day.

Lucky for me, my mom, a.k.a. thecrystalpansy, is a pretty crafty lady herself. She was there with me the whole way — making and baking and putting the finishing touches on everything. We knew every artisan involved, but our cake decorations were Wendy Kromer's "Magical Marzipan Forest Cake Kit & Birds," our big splurge! Our inspiration was drawn from our location: the rocky eastern coastline, the mossy green woods, and the apples growing in the nearby orchard. We really wanted to make everything as local as possible. Alex works summers on a nearby sustainable farm where most of our produce was picked by friends and all of our lovely flowers grew.

Since our wedding took place close to the fall equinox, traditionally the harvest time, we were very inspired by the the natural color palette of fall. Rosy apple reds and Japanese lantern oranges, bittersweet yellows and ruddy root vegetables. Our flowers were picked the morning of the wedding by the ladies in my family. Ranunculus, larkspur, yarrow, eucalyptus, straw flower, snap dragons, Chinese lanterns, and zinnias. We had a wonderful time getting out there in the misty morning and collecting the finds for the day. It was a great time to relax a bit and literally smell the flowers before the big day really started.

Alex and I got married under a very simple Huppah (Jewish wedding canopy) that was fashioned by our friend, Jared. I stitched up the canopy from duponi silk, and my mom decorated it with bittersweet and crab apples from our yard.

We switched up the cocktail hour for "apple hour," where all the treats served were apple inspired. Apple cider, apple tartlettes, and candied apples were served. We had reception at the local restaurant and art gallery, Chase's Daily, where our invitation invited guests to a "feast of locally grown and hand-harvested goodies." The menu used all local produce and cheeses with handmade breads and seasonal salads. We had three types of tiny savory pies all made in my kitchen. Root vegetable, Blackbird pie, and my favorite, The Boleta Tart with wild mushrooms hand-gathered by the groom's family. We also put together an heirloom tomato salad with over 30 pounds of farm tomatoes! Guests were invited to share their handmade favorites and to bring pies, tarts, cakes and the like to add to the bounty.

Our place cards were apples picked from a local orchard with calligraphy leaves. We wanted our tables to really bring home the woodland theme and decorated them with moss, Chinese lanterns, acorns and tiny pumpkins. The favors were knitted sachets of rose hips grown in my parents garden.

I decided to make my own veil using simple tulle, and I added a pearl rosette from my great grandma's wedding dress (something old and blue). My grandmother's pearls were something borrowed, and my dress was something new. Alexander wore a natural linen suit, and all the groomsmen wore orange ties. The flower girls' dresses were simple white cotton embellished with satin and grosgrain ribbon. They each wore crowns of vine and vintage millinery of toadstools and crab apples from my shop. My mom made my crown from bittersweet vine and rosemary from my own tiny backyard garden.

Our rings were one of my favorite details. Fashioned from rose gold with a look similar to tree bark, I just loved how they tied everything together.

We were lucky to have our fantastic photographer Karen, who used both digital and vintage analog cameras. She made sure our day translated so lovingly to print!

At the end of it, all it was so wonderful to sit back and see what the hands of everyone we know and love had crafted for us...and to appreciate what our own hands made too!

How-Tuesday: Make a Felt Mushroom with My Little Mochi

Myra Masuda, the brains behind My Little Mochi, knows that crafters love mushrooms. She promises that this cute little guy is easy-peasy and quick-as-a-breezy. Download the pattern and complete project instructions here. Enjoy!

Materials:

Red and white felt scraps
Scrap of sturdy cardboard
Red and white embroidery Floss
Brown crochet thread or cord
Polyfill stuffing
White acrylic paint
Hot glue gun
Paint brush or stick with a Wide back tip
Ultra fine glitter (optional)

Instructions:

1. Transfer and cut out the pattern pieces from white and red felt and cardboard. You will need a large red felt circle, a small cardboard circle and a strip of white felt.

2. Making the stem: Tie a knot at the end of a length of white floss (I used red floss here for illustrative purposes only) and use a needle to string it through the bottom corner of one end of the white felt.

3. Starting from the end of the felt with the floss, begin rolling the felt into a coil. Make sure to keep the end of the floss outside of the coil.

4. After you're done rolling the felt into a coil, insert the needle into the middle of the coil and out through the bottom outer corner of the felt strip.

5. Re-insert the needle into the felt coil to stitch the end closed. After the last stitch, insert the needle back into the coil and out through the center of the coil, and tie a knot at the center to secure it in place. Set the stem on the side.

6. Making the cap: Tie a knot at the end of a length of red floss (I used white floss here for illustrative purposes only) and sew a running stitch along the edge of the red felt circle. Pull the thread to form a little sack.

7. Firmly stuff the sack with polyfill. Note: the more polyfill you use, the higher the cap of your mushroom will get. I used all the polyfill shown in the materials photo at the top which was a nice sized handful of polyfill.

8. Insert the cardboard circle into the sack, over the polyfill. It's okay if some of the polyfill peeks out the sides, but try your best to keep the polyfill in place with the cardboard circle.

9. Pull on the red floss again to tighten the red felt over the cardboard leaving a small opening of the cardboard visible. Note: the opening should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the white felt stem coil for a nice tight fit.

10. Use your needle to secure the gathers and tie a knot. Hide the thread end by reinserting the needle into the felt and out through the middle opening. Clip excess thread.

11. Apply a dab of hot glue to the exposed cardboard on the cap.

12. Insert the stem onto the glue on the cap at a 90 degree angle and press firmly but gently in place.

13. Use a knitting needle (I used a bamboo skewer) to push any exposed stem edges back into the cap opening.

14. The dots: Pour some white acrylic paint onto a paint palette and dab the back end of a wide paint brush handle into the paint. Apply the paint to the top of the stem to form dots. Depending on the type of felt you use and the look you want, you may need to apply two coats of paint for each dot.

15. If you like, you can add a short length of brown crochet thread or cord to the top center of the cap for a hanger, but it should also be able to stand up on its own. And that's it! "All pau," as they say Hawaii. Easy right?

I sprinkled ultra-fine glitter over the white dots while the paint was still wet for a shimmery effect, which was really hard to photograph, but looks so great in person.

Etsy Finds: I Wood, Wouldn't You?

Faux bois is French for "fake wood," and it is one of my favorite search terms on Etsy. I must admit, I really can't go through the day without searching for terms like faux bois, woodgrain, log, woodland or forest. I think it stems from the wonderful memories I have of my childhood, growing up in a home on the edge of the woods where almost every surface was covered with 1970s' wood paneling. It's amazing to see the variety of items available with a fake woodgrain pattern and how each individual artist interprets the style of faux bois.

Trends: Desiretoinspire's Low Down on the High-end Look

We invited midcenturyjo to be a trends-spotter for the week. She runs a great blog called Desire to Inspire where she can showcase her skills as an interior designer and artist. She also has an Etsy shop, midcenturyjo.etsy.com, where she sells prints of her original drawings. As you can see from her self-portrait, she's very talented! Read on for how she would work in a rustic, natural feel to bring some design sense to your room.

Every day I post gorgeous rooms on my blog Desire to Inspire. Every day I am confronted with the style that money can buy and every day I know that with a little hard work, a lot of patience and a good eye, a beautiful room can be pulled together for a lot less. Individual style has always been “in” — even more so today. Indie chic is the big thing. Where do you get it? Etsy, definitely.

I’m not suggesting that you can style your house from ceiling to floor in Etsy treasures. What I am saying is that style is just a search through the Etsy categories away. Handmade chic, indie boho, artisan élan: call it what you will. Start with a basic room and add the glam. Whether the basics are Crate and Barrel or Craigslist, West Elm or eBay, toss in a generous sprinkling of Etsy finds, and you’re on your way to a fabulous room for less bucks and much more individuality.

I’ve trawled the pages of Etsy looking at a number of my favorite styles from boho modern to Hollywood Regency, but I’ve settled on rustic indie woodlands. Think deer, antlers, owls and can’t see the forest for the trees. Here are some of the treasures I found.

Let’s start with some statement furniture.

Next add a little glow with lamps.

Change out the shades with something like these, or buy a cheap drum frame from a chain store and cover it with a hand screen-printed artisan fabric or one of the hundreds of new and vintage fabric.

Next some accessories. How about pillows? Remember, if the color is not quite right, you can always ask the shop owner about a custom job. A throw will make it cozy on those chilly nights. And how about a roughhewn mantle for the fire. Oh, and a mirror!

Last but not least, some artwork. Etsy reigns supreme when it comes to affordable art. For our woodland chic look, go for a loose grouped arrangement. Tie them all together with a similar frame or mat. Thrifted frames are fun and unique and IKEA is a great source of cheap frames. Don’t forget you can always paint the frames to match.
