This music video for the band Asobi Seksu was conceived of and designed by Brooklyn-based illustrator Dan-ah Kim, a.k.a. dkim, and executed with the help of director Aaron Stewart-Ahn. The pair met while working as crew on a Michel Gondry project. This playful animation was done in camera without the aid of computers or green screens.
Here's what Dan-ah had to say about it:
We wanted to make this an animation done in-camera without green screens or CG, so we first filmed the band performing the song in a photo studio, then animated over the footage using a projector. In the studio we had Yuki and James against a white cyc and used a few props — feathers and arrows, as well some set pieces from their amazing album artwork done by Sean McCabe. Then we took the footage home and projected it against sheets of paper on the wall, onto which I drew, painted, and rearranged paper cutouts. We animated frame by frame, taking a still photo of the projected footage and art. It resulted in approximately 3,500 pictures, laid out in Final Cut and put together to create the video.
Here are some great photos from the work in progress...

wow totally cool video-like painting come to life. Music takes me back, reminiscent of Stone Roses and Lush-aaah when I was so young. Great video, cool items, feels like a five minute vacation.
