Etsy's Handmade Blog
Featured Buyers: Sneak Attacks from the Handmade Movement

Do you know how to do the happy dance? You will soon! Today Michael Phipps of phippsart.etsy.com shares his inspiration for the "Sneak Attacks" community project. Read on!

After several years of filling vending machines and stacking cans of food, I quit my job so my constant desire to create could be unleashed. Now on any given day I might be climbing scaffolding to work on a mural or using a microscopic brush on a book cover painting. When my sister introduced me to Etsy that first year as a full time artist, my mind started racing with ideas, and I decided I wanted to screenprint artwork onto shirts. Having screenprinted in college and then later in a friend's studio (where my darkroom was also the bathroom for an indie rock venue), it was a natural transition. I still remember making those first few sales on Etsy. Even now, EVERY sale is a thrill, but those first several were special. The feeling back then was powerful enough to positively affect my entire day.

Several months later, the memory of that exhilaration got me thinking of ways I might help other shop owners feel the same excitement, so I started a thread in the Etsy Forums entitled "Make Someone's Day," encouraging others to find shops without sales and to be their first sale. This went on for a few weeks and was even carried on by other Etsy sellers, some of whom went on to form the Etsy Patrons Team. I also figured that if it were a thrill to get one sale, how great would it be to suddenly have a whole swarm of business in just one day?

Thus the Sneak Attack was born. I started a thread asking if anyone wanted to take part in a "Sneak Attack" and explained the concept. It didn't take long before we already targeted two shops and had two more in the works. The excitement on the part of the shop owners AND the shoppers was so great that I knew I wanted to make this a regular occurrence. I quickly threw together the bones of a web site, which included a schedule of upcoming "attacks." (The site's now been completely revamped.) The response was overwhelming. For about a month we held Sneak Attacks every weekday, but that proved exhausting! So ever since we've been doing them Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The Sneak Attacks are no one-man operation. I couldn't do this all by myself — not even close. In fact, each "attack" is sponsored by another Etsy seller or buyer, who chooses the shop and coordinates it all. They start a thread in the forums, which serves as a sort of pre-game party before the appointed time. My biggest help through all this has been VintageEmbellishment. She's done more to promote and support the movement than one could even imagine. There's a long list of others who have made all of this possible.

I'm often asked how shops are chosen as "victims" of the attacks. First and foremost, no one should volunteer to be at the receiving end of a Sneak Attack. That's about the best way to NOT be chosen. It wouldn't be a "Sneak Attack" then, would it?! The shops need to have few or no sales, have been around for at least two weeks (preferably longer), they need to have some recent activity evident in their shops, and they need to have a good amount of quality, affordable products. We sadly pass by a lot of shops because they have blurry or dark pictures, incomplete descriptions, or nothing has been added or renewed for months.

Since the end of September, The Handmade Movement has sponsored 67 attacks on a total of 81 shops, resulting in 973 sales! That amounts to about $6000 worth of products bought from these up-and-coming shops over the course of just over four months. Here are the stories of just a handful of those shops.

Rachelherzog: "I had started my Etsy shop, Tickleworm, in September 2008. I put up seven items and kept working and adding more from there. (You check your shop like you check the phone for messages when you are expecting someone to call.)

In October, I was adding items, checked back and one of them was gone — at first I thought I didn't load it correctly (operator error), but then more items were gone. I saw I had a convo message, checked it, read it, and still it took me a second...I just couldn't believe I went from zero sales to a bunch in 10 minutes. I checked the thread and was reading what everyone was saying about my items...I couldn't believe it! It felt so great! Even if people didn't buy, they were saying such nice things! I honestly had tears in my eyes! PEOPLE WERE BUYING MY THINGS, THINGS I MADE!

The 'Sneak Attack' was my big break, so to speak. It kept me making more, better, different items! So now, I return every so often to buy from a shop that is being 'Sneak Attacked' because, well, it feels so good to do that for someone — and you get a great product."

Desertnana: "For almost three years I was a more-than-merry Etsy shopper. I finally took the plunge and opened my shop, but felt like a resident of Whoville in Horton Hears a Who. Desert Nanas Retro Ranch was full of goods, and I was like a Christmas elf reading, shooting, and uploading. (On dial up, mind you...) Then on December 8th, after an hour of shooting more items for the shop, I clicked on Retro Ranch to see 5 new orders! As I read the first order, I suddenly thought 'Wait-just-one-second...Did my sister do a big sympathy buy after listening to my repeated 'Steven Colbert fist-to-the-heaven' laments...??!' But no: the buyer's name is Heather (aka Winemakerssister), and in the message to the seller, it said, 'SNEAK ATTACK.'

My personal orbit shifted its axis, and I danced the desert happy dance! I shouted like Sally Field in her infamous 1980s Oscars Speech, 'They like me!' All of the hours and days of banging my head against walls of technological confusion were not in vain! I have customers!!! WinemakersSister was the first of this 'mysterious group' (Hautetotes, VintageEmbellishment, The Copper Cauldron, KreatedbyKelly), to respond to my mail, and I was not surprised to learn that a volunteer group of Etsy folk do this as a weekly hobby to surprise and encourage new shops!

With this wonderful burst of encouragement I went forth, forever changed by the kindness of these lovely ladies, having gained a dear friend (love you Heather) and wanting to share and give the same kind of boost to new and struggling beginners."

FartsyArts: "The 'Sneak Attack' is one of the coolest ideas to support new shops. KitsandCaboodles sponsored my 'Sneak Attack.' I am sure a lot of beginner Etsy sellers can relate when I say it takes a lot of hard work and outside the box thinking to get your shop noticed. Having a handful (or more) of people visit the shop AND purchase an item is a double bonus!! When I got the e-mail that I was going to be a 'victim' of a 'Sneak Attack,' I ran to my boyfriend in utter excitement and screamed, 'I don't know what this is but it's going to be FUN!' Once I realized what the whole game was, my eyes were glued on the clock and my finger was on my mouse ready to reset my browser!

...I am a regular visitor to the site to see who the next 'victim' is. It is a great promotional tool and so much fun to partake in as a seller and a buyer. I have participated in a past 'Sneak Attack' and the thanks you get from the seller spells happiness and it feels just great, and you get something cool for yourself too!"

Monkeysalwayslook: "I was, of course, completely thrown off guard when I finally realized that I was a victim of a sneak attack. I can't really describe the feelings I felt except amazement, joy, surprise and overwhelming gratitude. Before the sneak attack, my store only had two sales. In my feedback to my buyers I said that this little gesture brought tears to my eyes, and when I think about it now, it still brings tears to my eyes. The generosity of complete strangers and the purchases that they made gave my little store the momentum and boost that has carried on to this day. Since the sneak attack, my store has had a steady stream of sales.

Because of the boost — and more importantly, the amazing generosity — of these people, I check in now and again at www.handmademovement.com to see who is up next — knowing that just a tiny purchase can make all the difference to the store's success, and [that it brings] motivation and joy...to the store's creator. I think this is what the handmade movement is all about: sharing in each others love, hard work, and care that is put into each and every item."

warpeDesign: "Being 'Sneak Attacked' caught me completely by surprise. I'd only been on Etsy for a month and was still on the low end of the learning curve. It was a challenge to figure out how to make my cards look special and if I could catch someone's interest among the ton of other cards that were posted every day. My cards are subtle, so it's hard to make them jump out from a tiny thumbnail. The 'Sneak Attack' was a wonderful affirmation that I had something special and that I was showcasing it the right way."

WontonLove: "It was a complete surprise. I was fairly new to Etsy at the time and never did I expect such craft activism to take place! The fundamental part of the idea touched my crafty heart. It's nice to think that anyone can sneak up on you, from around the world, when you least expect it, and you get a bunch of sales to boot!"

Now it's your turn to help create more stories like the ones above (and get some cool items in the process!). Check out http://www.handmademovement.com for the schedule of upcoming Sneak Attacks and join in on the fun!

What a GREAT idea!!!! I think the first few sales definately mean a lot to a seller its a feeling of amazement that someone else actually thinks my work is good(no longer just my family friends etc) It's definately a feeling of accomplishment and its great that sneak attack is helping sellers along(you didnt even mention that by doing this and leaving feedback your letting the whole etsy community know that this is a trustworthy shop with quality product to boot!

I had just read about this cool love bucket filler (love bucket means heart) on the forums last week and thought it had to be the most inspirational almost 'pay it forward' thing I had seen in ages and it really touched my heart.

As a former "victim" I can say that this is a great thing that Michael started. I try to participate and return the favors as often as I can. I couldn't believe it when I got attacked! I was in tears! What a wonderful feeling when you see all those sales! As most have said you at first think what's going on here? and then you start reading, jumping, crying, screaming, whatever! and it's just wonderful!.

March 5, 2009 at 12:10 a.m. GrandmaMarilyns

This is a really cool concept. It boosts the morale of the shop owner that is stuggling to get ahead and feels that noone likes what they are creating and what are they doing here.

March 5, 2009 at 12:12 a.m. budpnq

That is just the sweetest thing and yet one more reason to love the dear people of Etsy! I've never heard of the sneak attacks, before--how very...sneaky... :D

March 5, 2009 at 12:23 a.m. capturedimagination

This is soooooooooo awesome! I have to participate in one soon. I've purchased a couple things from really great new Etsy shops to give them a boost in the past. Sneak Atack is the perfect way to really make it count.

This is SUCH an amazing movement! My sister and my shop, which donates all proceeds to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, was sneak attacked last October by this group in a "charity sneak attack". In charity sneak attacks, they allow shops with a few more sales, but we still had very few (I think we were at 12 at the time.) What a wonderful feeling to have our sales more than triple in less than 24 hours! And even more amazing was the timing of it all. The next morning I found out that friends of ours had found out their baby had leukemia the exact same day we had been "attacked". I bawled like a baby when I found out that both had happened at the same time. What inspiration, and what a miracle! I have since come back and sponsored another "charity sneak attack" myself, and what a joy it was to send that feeling to someone else!

Love the sneak attacks!

March 5, 2009 at 6:04 a.m. ScentfulIndulgence

Our shop was 'attacked' on January 9th, 2009. We opened in November 2008. My partner and I were actually putting forth a last ditch effort to get our online sales moving and were out buying props for new pics while all this was happening. At that point, we had no sales. After that feature in January, we were featured in two treasuries, placed 17th out of a field of 60 in The Storque's Best Beauty Bets Poll, been invited to several craft shows locally and as far away as Atlanta, GA, AND our sales just hit the 60 mark.

I can tell you that I give much of the credit to our movement to Sneak Attack. I too participate in Sneak Attack whenever I can because I want to Pay It Forward. That feeling, to go from completely frustrated and ready to give up, to so excited and happy that you want to cry and keep trying....it's just freakin' priceless!

I'm a former "victim" and I survived to tell :)

March 5, 2009 at 3:11 p.m. signsofmylife

awww - GREAT idea! it is so much FUN to have a sale, YES indeed - this is so nice that this movement has come together to help other etsy sellers get a sale and to boost their sales! hooray for all of you that have made this happen - good on you! i do know a few shops i would love to suggest for a "sneak attack" - i'll see what i can do via through you and the threads you have offered.
this may not have a thing to do with this movement, but i took the handmade pledge some time ago...problem is i do not know how to up load the icon to place in my shop...if anyone reading this knows how to up load that "hand made pledge" image i would be sooo happy if you could share the knowledge! best regards - marcy
p.s. i would love to get involved in the "sneak attack" - it is so much fun to make someones day just as folks have made my day! :D

March 5, 2009 at 4:39 p.m. InTheLightOfTheSun

I went to the site and started looking at the etsy shops who were attacked- it's so heartwarming to see what a difference this idea has made. Congratulations to all who participate- I'm sure that the encouragement has saved many crafters from closing shop.
It's a crafter's version of Pay It Forward. Not only the physical reward of a handmade treasure, but also the emotional reward of encouraging someone who needs it.

Not sure I can get it in 2 words, but basically:

Check http://www.handmademovement.com for when the next shop will be revealed. Show up on the site at that time and make a purchase from the newly revealed shop.

March 10, 2009 at 3:10 p.m. oddestbird

I think what you're doing is great. It gives hope to new sellers who can easily lose their confidence while waiting for views and sales.

Just, finally, getting to read some articles--had dial-up and an old SLOW computer until just recently. Now with a faster connection and my new laptop Christmas present, I'm finally able to start exploring a little more on Etsy, and it doesn't take a half hour to upload a picture!!

I'm liking this more and more--WAY TO GO!

This is amazing. I got my shop name in May of last year but put product only last December. I can relate to those feelings of working, playing, working, making, creating, uploading, photgraphing.... etc., etc... with your breath held in anticipation of results And to have your first few sales from a total stranger is an undescribable elation... I'm in for the Sneak Attacks!

I want to know if you women (popular opinion) Do you feel that when money is tight or everyone is announcing an economic recession, that affects your daily dress? Do you feel that you dont want to dress up to the part any longer, or does it not even play a factor? Honest feedback would be appreciated.

I have a buyer that I love and would love to see attacked.
Paulamills. I purchased her Mexican Folk Art Box and adore it. She was very nice and even wrote and explained where some of the pieces came from as well as sharing with me a story of her father making the chair in. It is a tremendously special piece to me and I know it was to her. I'd love to be involved in this attack since I want more of her work.

You guys, the sneak attack is so very cool! I am recovering from selling on the big auction site whose name I need not mention, (but now they are big in the car biz) and believe me, nothing like this goes on there! I love etsy! what a pleasant, pretty, happy, good vibe, warm and fuzzy place to peddle my vintage! I have spent years looking for just such a place and want to thank you for the venue! Everything about etsy is so much more fun than the other place and people are not beating me up and out! I am reborn! Blessings
Toni

This is such a great idea! It is so great that you help people to get their first sale! ...and a love the storys of the ETSY sellers that danced the desert happy dance when they got their frst sale!

Aug. 26, 2009 at 7:09 a.m. HighPriestess

Hi Everyone!
What a fantastic story and such a kind gesture for any seller anxiously awaiting their first sales to get their efforts off the ground. I'd love to selected for the Sneak Attack...my shop could use the infusion of business to get the ball rolling and I'd be so excited to return the favor to another unsuspecting newbie.

"High Five" to Michael for having this wonderful idea. It's a win/win and I like it.

Aug. 26, 2009 at 12:04 p.m. LaCurioshar

what a warm-fuzzy-ing article..
totally relate to those first sales and how it could totally boost your day up (so TRUE!). I've had my first sale couple of months ago and then nothing, no feedback, no news whether it has arrived or not or whether she likes/dislikes it or not or whatever... (and other negative thoughts that set my wires awry)...
Finally got over it and try to be positive, renew my listing, pimpin' up the shop... And just got my second sales, and the one-week flu just gone! Flip Flop! just like that!
Now after bawlin' out like some psycho... comes the big question... How can I attack? (beside checking the website for schedule, cuz it's defunct)

Wow, thanks for the stories, phippsart. That's what I call community with a capital "C"!

Aug. 26, 2009 at 4:07 p.m. ArtisticWill

This is a great idea. Love the stories. When I got my first sale and then another, I couldn't explain the pure joy I felt when this happened. I never got a sneak attack, but having a first sale does bring boost ego and is emotionally uplifting. We all need to tweet this on Twitter, Facebook or on every blog. Keep up the great work.

Aug. 27, 2009 at 12:23 p.m. BrookesPurseLove

How VERY cool! The woman that turned me onto Etsy had told me about thins, but I didn't think it was true! After reading this, I wanna give give give! What a good feeling!

Aug. 30, 2009 at 9:34 a.m. TowheeHillStudio

What a wonderful way to jump start stores! I am so impressed with all of the people involved in this endeavor. I hope my shop will be picked! I haven't had a sale but I am hopeful I will soon. I live to paint and it is extremely important to see my creations settled somewhere where they will be appreciated. Keep up the great work!
