Size does matter! (And dimensions do too.)
I experienced some culture shock when I moved to the U.S. from Italy. The Americans use U.S. customary units as their system of measurement, not the metric system!
I actually knew that measurement was different in the U.S. from Europe (we do learn this in school), but it really hit me only when I went for the very first time to the grocery shop and I had no idea how to buy 1 kg of apples or 1 L of milk, and I don’t even want to talk about temperature!
It may sound silly, but dimensions really do matter in our Etsy shops.
When sellers are listing an item, it is very helpful for buyers to have both types of measuring information.
This is my favorite link, where you can find any kind of conversion starting with the most common — from inches to centimeters, to clothing sizes or jewelry sizes or even cooking measurements!

Deutsch (translation by Stefanie Karp)

Polish (translation by HAREandDRUM):
Rozmiar ma znaczenie! (i miara też)

Satıcıların, ürünlerini listelerken ürün bilgilerini her iki ölçü sisteminde birden vermeleri alıcılara büyük kolaylık sağlayacaktır.

Thanks so much for your point of view. I need to get to work and add those measurements. :)
LittleMaryMoo
Thank you for this article. It took a few listings to reaslise that I needed to to this. It is really hard to think and visulise in the system you didn't learn as a child so I pop both measurements in my listings now.
jemmetals
Ah measurements. I had the same but opposite issue when I was in Italy, resulting in my purchasing a kilo of spinach and trying desparately to find new ways to eat it
ThePeachTree
Love this! These collaborative Storque articles are so very informative and fresh. Fantastic layout!
thymbyldesigns
I can't find the Etsy shop for the German translator... I'd like to see how my countrywoman applies the measurements in a useful way - it's never too late to learn a new trick!
Is the article originally by FrucciDesign or by Vanessa? It doesn't say anywhere...
Ornamentii
These kinds of articles are so helpful in seeing outside our own little world. I make handmade jewelry, and always list in cm or mm when giving sizes. Most of the rulers in the USA have measurements in cm and mm besides inches, so my USA compatriots can make the conversion easily. Although I currently do not ship outside the US, I plan to in the near future, so the comments from people outside the US are SO helpful! Thank you!!!
yestreen
I do centimeters, always. If somebody needs a measurement in inches I use my calculator: 1 inch = 2.54 cm
:)
minouette
I always list both.
By the way, there is one significant error in the translation into French. In the original blurb, the seller explains she moved FROM the US and to Europe. In French this is backwards.

Thank you so much. I will add the appropriate international measurements to my listings. I love the beautiful shawl from Silvia66. It is exquisite.
pogoshop
Such a good point... I'm off to include centimeters to all my pogo listings. Why hadn't I thought of that before?
BeadinBabe
Ehhh I need to list both measurements. Thanks for the eye opener! lol :)
kaleidoskopicromance
Thanks for the translations.
If nobody minds me saying so, we do not use "gn" in Spanish words for the "ñ" sound. If the letter "ñ" is needed, it can be written by pressing at the same time Alt and 164.
Proper use of the words is also good in any business.
Beadz2Pleaz
I also come from a place of the USA metric system being foreign yet I don't put the other in my listings so thanks for this, it's a real valid point. Of all the folk out there, I should know how hard it is to do the conversion. Temperatures still get me.
FrucciDesign
jemmetals that's funny!!!!
thymbyldesigns, the article was originally from me...I was the one lost on the Californa's freeways who didn't know how many gallons of gas are enough to fill the trunk of the car while trying to calculate how hot it was 90F that day thinking that all my grocery shopping was very cheap compare to Italy....sure a pound is half a kilo!!
girltuesdayjewelry
It's too easy to think the world exists of only what we see around us. Thanks for enlarging my perspective! I will use the link (onlineconversions.com) and make adjustments to my store to accommodate more customers from different places!
bijouxdellostregatto
Thank you very much! I've just begun to convert the measure and these site are very useful. Especially the Italian one!!! :)
Karmacrochet
lol jemmetals! When I moved to the US, my first trip to the grocery store took like 6 hours I had no clue about the brands measurements or anything so I read all the labels.
Silvia66
Thank you very much for this article, it is very interesting and useful.
Also thank you very much for including me in the list♥
BeautyWithin
Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. I try to soak up this type of information that you and others are so gracious about sharing.
COGnitivecreations
Being Canadian, we already function in both (officially in the metric system, but usually "fluent" in imperial). I've been using imperial measurements in my listings since I find that 90% of my customers are from the US, but this article made me consider including both... Thanks again Etsy!
FluteTeacher
Thanks for this. It will be very helpful. I am American visiting family in Australia right now and am struggling with this very issue. This is a good reminder that others may struggle when viewing measurements in my etsy shop. I certainly want to make it easy for everyone!
etcetrix
TIP: Type in your desired size conversion right into Google search engine. Typing in (without quotation marks)
"15 inch to cm" yields a quick conversion of "15 inch = 38.1 centimeters" Works for mm as well...and more.
Boldacious
Great storque piece.

Great article. Being on an Etsy seller with most buyers from US, I become get used to it with inches until I'm not so expert with metrics any more. Thanks God here in my country, they provide manual magic tape measurement which includes metrics & inches, in case you are not on line.
Thank you for sharing the conversion links. I know how you feel about "temperature" :)
DeNovoStyle
I list in inches, but encourage buyers to send me their measurements. Easily converted if necessary.
SewnNatural
Great article, beautifully presented. Thanks to your reminder, I'll be adding metric measurements to make shopping easier for buyers from many different places.
ciaraobscura
This is something I've been so far behind on getting situated in my shop. I'm so appreciative of your link to the awesome conversion site... very helpful!
LittleGreenSquirrel
Merci, muchas gracias and ank you thay! All the tips are helpful!
ennadoolf
Great article! I always try to remember cm along with my inches.
tortillagirl
Having lived in the United States and Mexico (and now France), I grew up with a bilingual education using both metric and imperial, and convert easily from one to the other (hmm...10 cm = 4", 2 kilos = 4.4 lb, etc). So I always include both measurements in my listings to help out all my buyers, no matter where they may be. Thank you for featuring my dress in the related items :-)
BelleReverb
Thank you! The clothing size converter is exactly what I've been looking for. I have found others on the web but this one seems to be the most accurate for converting UK to US sizes.
ScrapArcs
You can also just type the conversions into google for most things and it will give you related measurements. For example, try "8mm in inches" or "4 oz in grams" and the results will be right there.
TipsyTimeMachine
Thanks for the reminder. In Canada we use both systems, some things are easier(or standard) to measure in metric and some in imperial.

Thank you for the link, really helpful! I join the author in her culture shock experience. I still can't figure out how measuring in 16ths of an inch can be comfortable. Oh well, when in Rome... :)
Ebruk
I live in Turkey we use cm but I give both inch and cm .I use program inch converter to calculate inches. Its too useful and easy way to convert from cm to inch.
sandali
AWESOME -- yes, it does matter indeed !! I notices with my first shop that no one seemed to understand my measurements in CM's -- now I convert everything to inches too -- I believe it's best to put both the cm's as well as the inches then the whole globe will understand -- happy days ;)
ovgilliesdesigns
I love the differences! Makes you more aware of other cultures and different perceptions. Takes a while to list both measurements in each listing, & personally I prefer metric (especially when dealing with gems/beads), but either way is not too much of a problem as you can find decent convertion online.
amoronia
Very useful article. It expands the horizons of everyone and saves sellers and buyers a lot of time and trouble...
daisytoad
I've wondered about this, as I like mine in inches, but the rest of the world uses metric! Thanks!

Thanks for your article. So helpful! It is increasingly easy for us to communicate with friends today.

Thank you so much for this reminder! I generally add cm in addition to inches, but sometimes I forget!

I simply Google the conversion I need and hop - it's there. For example - google "31.5cm in inches" and get "31.5 centimeters = 12.4015748 inches".
TheNebulousKingdom
thanks for the article. It's so great to have the French translation!
LushPunk
I always list cm and inches in my descriptions - I have an AWESOME little hot pink tape measure that I got for free from fusionbeads.com - it makes it so easy to get the different measurements!

Thank you so much for this fabulous article with these useful conversion info! lovelove
metrostation
I always list inches as that is what I learned in school and we switched to metric halfway through which made it hard to get used to but I will try and list in both thanks for the article and useful tips!
PomLove
this is very cool, never really thought about it but it makes sense to cover all of the measurement bases:)
lesthings
Great point! From the beggining on etsy I was aware that this was essential,so thanks to my metric-inches rule I put all my measurements in both systems.
Another issue is the ring measurement system...it's different for almost every country and I worried about it.Luckily,I had some american designer rings and finally found the correspondence. From my experience it works!!!
Thanks to karmacrochet for the excellent spanish translation:))
AMIdesigns
Thanks for the link to the conversion tables. I am in the UK so am sort of familiar with both, but this is great
littlejennywren
Coming from a country that uses the metric system I have been using inches in my listings because this is an American site - not very clever of me. I'll use both from now on.
staroftheeast
Many american sellers include a picture of an american coin for size reference by their article, specially supplies. This of absolutely NO USE for a foreigner who has no clue as to the size of the different american coins.
So if you sell overseas, include measurements, any measurements or even a measure tape in inches on your pictures is of help, but please, no coins!
neraidodhmiourgies
it it good to enclose in the descriptions both cm and inch, to help the buyers and make their shopping more easy and fun!
klacustomcreations
I think it is always important to include exact sizes for items, I now have my metric measurements down, I had to quickly learn the sizes for my sterling silver discs. Great post always interesting topics.
mazedasastoat
In all my photos of small items I include an American coin, a british one & a Euro as well. I had to ask one of my lovely US customers to send me the US money (obviously I paid her for it & the postage, I'm not cheeky enough to ask people to mail me money just because it would be nice!)
I'm sure we all have repeat buyers that get to be friends, so most sellers could acquire a few coins of different currencies to give scale in photos.
I also list measurements in both inches & centimetres... I'm old enough to work in inches, but for anyone British & under 30 it's just as hard to understand Imperial measurements as it is for the rest of Europe!
KatyScudieri
You can also download MS Calculator Plus, which has all kinds off conversions on there! I use it ALL the time. The only one it doesn't have which I use once in a while is dwt (pennyweights). :)
VixVintage
Thanks so much for making me see the other side, I will get to work on adding metric measurements.
MichelleStudio
I used to work at an Italian furniture company. Also growing up with metric system, I completely understand the shock with different measure system. However, it didn't hit me that I should post different measurements on Etsy shop. It does make sense. I will work on it in the future. Thanks for the reminder.
spacejam
Oh, thanks a lot! I really need to add to my metric sizes US ones!!

I can't believe I didn't think of it, and I actually came from Hong Kong where we use the metric system. I had to completely learn all measurements when I came to the US. Must include cm/mm now to my cards. Thanks for the post and a reminder that the United States is just one country.

Thanks so much for the links! They really help. I'll have to update my shop with all the conversions.

Isn't it funny-- as a vintage bead/button dealer (beadsandbits.etsy.com) I find it the most normal thing in the world to use metric in most listings -- but in my vintage/handcrafted shop, I use (admittedly, crazy!) "standard" measurements. Must be an ambidextrous thing!
lassandaliasdeana
it´s right!!! measures are sometimes a problem!!! thanks for information!!! ;)

Thanks to the team for bringing this topic to sellers' agenda.

All the best!

I always write my measurements in centimeters and in inches. I got myself a tape measure that has both sizes on them, to make things easier.
What always cracks me up is seeing an American coin in a picture. Sorry, that doesn't really help me.
