This article was originally published on February 12, 2008. We are reviving it as part of the Best of the Storque series. Enjoy!
It's an Etsy How-To Video with the wonderful julieincharge! This week we'll be talking about Gocco printing, which is a way of printing that uses a kit from Japan. If you've ever wanted to do screenprinting but have been too intimidated, Gocco is the way to go. I sat down with Julie and she walked me through how to make a sweet little Valentine card.
First things first for your project ...
Supplies Needed for Gocco Printing
If you buy a new PG-5 kit, it should come with all of the following to get you started:
- B-6 masters (screens)
- Print Gocco Lamp (bulbs)
- Riso Gocco ink for paper
- Riso Gocco pens OR photocopy images (no larger that 3.5” x 5.5”)
- adhesive blocking strips (optional)
- 2 AA batteries
- Gocco cleaner
- blue filter (for use with photocopies)
There are many different applications and ideas for Gocco: greeting cards, postcards, business cards, notecards, envelopes, invitations, stationary, napkins, tags, labels, stickers, bookplates, art prints, zines, small books … the list goes on!
Let's Go Gocco
Once you've got your supplies and an idea, the first thing you want to do is make your design. You can do it on the computer or by hand, but you're going to want carbon to be in the ink of whatever you do, so you'll want to photocopy your project or use a special pen. Some laser printers work, too.
Once you've got your design, it's time to make the screen. Make sure there are batteries in your printer and put the screen in with the blue part facing out. Load the flashbulb holder with two flashbulbs. (Make sure to wash your hands when you're done since they are toxic.)
Flash your screen, and you're all set to start printing. Apply the Gocco inks to your screen. If you're going to use more than one color, use the foam blocker that Julie shows in the video to separate the different colors.
Then start printing! I was super impressed by how fast this whole process went! If you have leftover ink on your screen, you can put it in a plastic bag and keep it for later.
Once you've got your cards, get them set up in your Etsy shop. A quick search for Gocco cards will give you an idea of the amazing and wonderful possibilities that await you when you fall down the rabbit hole that is Gocco printing.
I'm also on the lookout for Gocco tips and tricks. The next time you do Gocco printing and notice that you have a special way of doing things that isn't mentioned in the video, write us a note, leave a comment, or make a little video showing your Gocco skills!

My sister and I got one (she runs our shop with me) and we have gocco parties whenever we are home on the holidays.
It's so awesome!
I wish supplies were easier to come by...there's some great shops on etsy who sell supplies...just wish the local art stores carried 'em too.

UglyKitty
Loved it! Gocco is SO much fun. I was definitely scared of it at first, but now, much to my boyfriend's annoyance, I Gocco everyday!
PortButtonsViNtAgE
I always wondered what the process looked like!
I am using a great deal of restraint by not buying one of these....I have to focus on my jewelry shop...too many supplies and too little time!!
pookeh
i have always been intrigued by grocco but it all seemed so intimidating to me. turns out, it's no sweat and just *mildly* toxic! ;) sweet! thanks, julie. thanks, bre. i'm definitely gonna have to look into get me one of these now. . .

Thank you!

good job on the video! *it is so nice that those of us beyond driving range to the Labs can be a part of them like this... and also that you all are fostering creative growth & the exploration of new media and techniques!
(i remember when gocco first came out and i always wanted one too...so, i am restraining myself from hitting the supplier links)
well done & more, more!

Say it ain't so...another gadget I MUST have...how about printing on fabric?

Great video Julie! Per your request, here is a link to my first attempt at Gocco:

PS. The lab coats were a nice touch!

Oh Poo! Seems just about everyone here is having a good time with their Gocco apart from me. Everytime I use it I can't get a good exposure on my screen - just comes out patchy like a bad photocopy... even after watching this vid!
Any advice?
PenguinLove
Great video! I just got my Gocco and Julie helped me in the forums, she is so nice! I created these journals http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=...

Someone above mentioned Northwood Studio for Gocco supplies. Their Gocco grrrl cleaner is awesome it even gets crusty old paint off.

Your video was great, thank you. Gocco-ing is addictive, with no surface safe! My next project...printing onto fabric.

http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?...
thanks you have given me one less thing to explain to people, i can now just steer them to this video!
Slowshirts
madebythem- they didn't cover it in this video, but are you using your blue filter screen during your exposing? it's supposed to be between the screen and bulbs (from what i understand, and have been doing) when using a photocopy as your original. With the carbon pens it is not needed. Also, the newer your copy the better i have found. Old copies often do not expose clearly.
Hope this helps! There's nothing worse then using up your last bulbs!
sarstar77
thanks for all the gocco info!
here are some of my 1st attempt at gocco. i must say...its a pretty cool little machine!

I love this!
I've worked with the THEREMOFAX technique with my students to make quick easy silkscreens.
Has anyone else used this process?
LefthandOriginals
Thanks so much Etsy! After watching your video I gained the confidence to create my first ever gocco print! It is super cute. In all of its sparrow tattoo style glory.
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?...
You have also inspired me to create a "how to clean up your gocco" tutorial. I shall post it here once it is completed. (Give me a couple of weeks as I might not be able to tear myself away from gocco at the current moment.
AmeliaDesign
Thank you! This is so cool!!!! Can't wait to get one (even though my mom doesn't get it lol my dad does since he works in graphic design).
AmeliaDesign
Does any one know about the fabric gocco printers? Could you do a tutorial on them? Anything special about them? Can you print paper on them too?
Thanks
jperegrine
Oh my gosh! This is so much fun! I've wanted a Gocco for years but didn't really know how to use it or where to get one. Your video was so inspiring.
Here are my first prints!

Yay! How cool. It was very strange (but awesome) to see myself in an etsy video.
(Too bad my name is not spelled Madlane). :P
BELLACOSAART
Great job, loved the video, made it look so easy. Made me totally want one.
Now I need to decide if it is right for me. I would really like to give it a try.
I also need to find the best, most reliable place to get one.
I will be in San Francisco soon, maybe I could pick one up there.
CheesecakeBree
Oh, I just bought a Gocco machine!! I'm so excited you made a how-to video, I haven't printed anything yet because just reading the directions that came with the kit didn't really help me visualize how it worked. This video demonstration and tips have really helped, I'm definitely going to start Gocco-ing now. Thanks a bunch!

I'm so sad... I have wanted to try this out for awhile but now that the products are discontinued... I don't think its gonna happen :(
ChickadeeSocialClub
Gocco machines haven't been made for distribution in the US for some time now, but I just learned from a friend in Japan that the company that makes the Gocco machines has stopped manufacturing them altogether! So sad...
thepairabirds
I've always wanted to try gocco printing. But, with the production of supplies ending, I won't get a chance:(
I hope someone starts manufacturing them again.
autumnsarrival
Nope- still intimidated! I like to keep things like this to the professionals so I can envy them :) I do need to find something quick and easy to make my tags, though. Mine take forever cutting out & glueing the layers together....I need a good punch!
treatzone
super-charming video! (helpful too!)
we also have a shop full of gocco goodness:
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?...

http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?...
and, not to be a downer, but i've heard rumors that riso is threatening to discontinue gocco again--does anyone know if this is true?
paperwren
My understanding is Riso will not be making the machines, but will continue to make the inks, screen, bulbs, etc.
I hope so anyway, or else I am in trouble!
RagnazIdnar
Riso has issued a statement about discontinuing gocco. As far as I know, it is official. All the sites I had been getting my supplies from have these disclaimers up now. Supplies will be shipped to the US suppliers presumably through December only? Supplies are kinda low everywhere and prices are up. :(
happyfamily
What a great vid. We keep meaning to dust off our Gocco and get some cards up and yall just convinced us to do just that!

So cool! This is the first time I've seen the whole Gocco process.

I never saw a gocco in action before! It looks like fun!
You should check fricdementol.etsy.com, she makes he most amazing things with gocco printing!
TokyoMommy
I am getting a gocco printer tomorrow for free...woo-hoo! I have been looking for one here in Japan for awhile now and oddly here they are regarded as a childs toy. I was told over and over again to check toys-r-us for one. I was surprised that there seemed to be no awareness of the cancer risk associated with the bulbs.
quarterpast6
I've wanted one of these amazing machines for years now. I can't get hold of one in the UK and am worried that if I do finally get one, the supplies will be limited and eventually run dry.
Does anyone know if there is any info on the subject?
ARCHIVES
Just new to etsy and stumbled across this post.
Have had my gocco for what must be 25 years now. Bought it in a sale at an educational suppliers and got lots of lamps when I saw them on offer.
Have made so many Christmas cards and postcards over the years, not to mention business cards - and I know so many friends and familly still treasure these and get the cards out every Chtistmas!
What a shame to see it go Obviously the end of an era!
DeanDymentStudios
OMG!!! I went to art school for printmaking and spent many toxic hours cleaning my silkscreens out only to later sell my equipment once I graduated because I didn't have the set-up at home. Not once did I ever hear about Gocco from any instructors or other students as a possibility . I want to try!

Quarterpast6: join the Gocco Yahoo! groups forum here for extra info on the state of Gocco, it's a very helpful community as well:

TokyoMommy: Could you please explain a bit more about the cancer risks of the bulbs, or cite some URL's for additional info??? Thanks!
And nothing but Gocco stuff here in my shop:

My gocco printer has been sitting lonely on my craft shelf for nearly a year. I busted her out and made the most gnarliest gift bags for my last craft show! I even goccoed some moleskines! i'm living in explaination points now!

ive done it Ive finally used my gocco G5 yay!!!! it all worked out splendidly. I kept it simple just using one colour for starters and will now move into something a little more adventurous next time. Thanks so much for the vid I had to run back and forth during the process just to ensure I was doing the right thing. :)
blossomboutique
just received my PG-10 from printaddict today--what joy!! I have wanted one for years!! Thanks for the tutorial. Mine came with a video, but the sound doesn't work, so this was a huge help. Any advice on how to clean the screen--and is it good for more than one use? Also, I saw some one using two masters in the video, but would love to know how and when to do this.
Thanks again--can't wait to try it out!
