Making Stencil and Yam Prints with Lotta Jansdotter

Lotta Jansdotter just came out with a book about printing called Lotta Prints.  I caught up with her at her Brooklyn studio and she showed me some tips and tricks for using stencils and yams to make prints!

Lotta has created a bunch of stencils that you can rip out of her book and use right away or you can make up your own!

If you've got any yams or potatoes around, you can use them to make prints, too! Upload photos to flickr and post the links in the comments below.

Lotta is having a printmaking workshop this Friday, June 13.  If you're in the NYC area, check it out!

Get to know Lotta better with this video we made with her last fall.

Her book is great -- I bought it a couple weeks ago, and I love how she incorporated a variety of printing techniques. Wish I could come to the workshop!

I wish I was in NYC! I just bought this book a week ago because I've been wanting to do my own printing on fabric (besides my gocco)..Great article and video.

Thanks for all the nice comments on the video folks! Serious bonus points for the first person to leave a link to a photo of their own potato or yam print project!

Thank you for including my fabric in the "related items" section. No kidding, but my son is in the backyard with a pototo shooter. I just looked at the potato with all these funky holes out of it and thought it would make a nice block print!

Must go see....

I've been spending many a late night in my basement studio working on some block printed textiles, so this was very inspiring. I love Lotta's simple & clean designs. Thank you!

Thank you so much for making this video! I really enjoyed it. I went to her printing party in San Francisco this past weekend and had a blast. Here a photo of what I did at the printing party (I brought a lotus root to print with).

So cute! What a neat little interview. I've loved Lotta's work for some time. I've been searching for some contemporary fabric without luck! I have 5 yards of hemp I'll print up using a potato! How cool is that, save money and have fun. I already have the jacquard textile paints. Wheeeee...I'll post a flikr link soon, or one to my blog. Thanks guys!

I want ABSOLUTELY try this, thanks very much for inspiration!!

June 21, 2008 at 11:31 p.m. Hatdiva

I did it! Here's my first Flikr photos..I printed a piece of hemp canva, with a potato. I found the sweet potato hard to cut evenly. It wouldn't print evenly. This was a fun project! How apropo, a potato printed piece of fabric, and I'm in Idaho :)

A word of warning with Jacquard textile paint:

Top loading washers can abrade the paint from your fabric. I found out the hard way!

June 24, 2008 at 3:56 p.m. rifferaff

love this. anyway you'll be doing a video tour of her new studio space?!

Aug. 31, 2008 at 6:36 p.m. pandapants5

Love the video! Her studio used to be around the block from my place, and I loved popping in and checking it out her cool studio. Her sketchbooks look great, but the music in the video was pretty distracting.
