So you’re a seller on Etsy. You're trying to get your name out there and be noticed. However, standing out in the crowd of enormously talented sellers and the wide variety of high-quality items is no easy feat. In fact, it can be daunting. How do you make your work seem different than everything else that's already out there?
Let's talk about finding your "niche" at Etsy and running a shop that has your distinct stamp of individuality.
Developing a unique style and approach with your shop is the best way to successfully carve out a niche for yourself. You know the items that are immediately recognizable as a certain seller's handiwork? That’s what I’m talking about. These sellers have found their niche by cultivating a style that is immediately recognizable.
Finding your Etsy niche implies not replicating what the shop next door is doing just so you can sell. It means you have to be creative, experiment with the craft you know how to do well, and define your own personal universe so that it shows in your shop and items.

Elsita is an ideal example of someone who has quickly and successfully found her niche at Etsy. Her shop has a variety of different items: dolls, jewelry, illustrations, sculptures — yet all are marked with her individual Elsita-style brand and blend harmoniously in her shop. Result? A neatly carved Elsita niche! “Success should never be a goal,” Elsita says. “Success is always the result of something else, which in my opinion is:
1. Do what you know how to do and try to do it the best you can.
2. Be yourself, use your own unique universe as a source of inspiration.
3. Don’t get used to the same thing; have fun, explore and try something different.”
Elsita’s way of exploring and defining her personal universe is through her sketchbooks and notebooks.

“My favorite one is called ‘Elsa against Asle.’ (Elsa is my name and Asle is my name spelled backwards.) This book is all about exploring ‘Asle,’ which is the part of me that I never get to know enough. Anytime I try something new in my art I get to know a part of me that it is less obvious.”

Another successful seller with a unique sense of style is Kreativlink, who is based in Austria. Kreativlink’s handmade journals and sketchbooks have a distinctive and inimitable quality, and are easily recognizable on Etsy as...well, Kreativlink! She says, “Finding a free niche at Etsy? Almost impossible. But finding your style, that’s the thing! Don’t think whether something will sell or not. Don’t look at what others do or what others sell. Just concentrate on your thing. Experiment. Make it over. Try different materials or techniques. Go bold and crazy! Don’t think about customers, make it just for YOU. Exactly the way YOU like it. You will come up with something you truly love and it will reflect your personality and your ideas. And that’s what people like to buy here on Etsy. They do not only buy a notebook, for example. That’s available at each supermarket, and probably less expensive than what I make. What they buy is my personality, my ideas, my dreams and yeah — my journals!”

Other sellers successfully find their niche by focusing on something that is close to them, so that creating is an enjoyment. Heli of helis is a talented artist based in Turkey, and despite her many skills in various mediums (painting, drawing, ceramics, knitting, crochet, papier-mâché…you name it!), she has found her Etsy niche by dedicating her shop items to an endearing “superhero” character and the character’s friends. Helis says, “This character (and her friends) are close to my heart, and I enjoy thinking about what she will do next. This character is easy to add to different kinds of items (T-shirts, dolls, paintings, prints...maybe later small bags or pouches). There are so many possibilities with her and her friends. The 'family' is growing and can grow to eternity.”

“For me, the important things [to cultivate] in my products are distinctiveness, good quality materials and good customer service. I sketch a lot and let my imagination fly free. I don't try to [make an] item that would sell a lot or is trendy. I make what gives me joy and will hopefully put a smile on my customers' face.”
Let your imagination fly free. Discover your personal universe. Experiment in the craft that you do well, or learn a new one and add your own individual flavor. Try to think outside the box and not do exactly what you were taught or what you see others do. Put your stamp on your items, photographs and product descriptions, and keep it consistent. Before you know it, your item listings will be easily recognizable as "yours" and you will have successfully found your own Etsy niche!

What a fantastic article and I agree wholeheartedly, just love what you are creating and create for love not to make money.

Wow! This is a really wonderful article. Thank you for putting this together! Quite encouraging.
crostini
cute article. I really love elsita's stuff - I remember she was the featured seller the week I joined Etsy! I love the photo in this article of her sketchbook - I also do a lot of sketching and illustrated "musing" and it really informs my creative process.
Huidesigns
Great article. Makes me ponder and at the same time solidifies what I already thought.
darklingwoods
well done! For those of us uncomfortable with the idea of "branding" ourselves this article comes across in away artist relate to, self discovery
thank you!
artbysusmitha
You've put it perfectly there!!
Thanks for the great article :)

Kreativlink's statement really sums it up for me:
"Don’t think about customers, make it just for YOU. Exactly the way YOU like it. You will come up with something you truly love and it will reflect your personality and your ideas. And that’s what people like to buy here on Etsy."
When I opened my shop, I knew I had to make exactly what I would love -- what I DO love -- and not try to cater to what I think customers would want. It may be riskier ... but it is a very true and comfortable place to be in.
lunaticart
Bravo mi tortillita!!!! que instructivo articulo, pero sobretodo tiene "alma".
this article has a soul that motivates you to keep going
littlebitsys
EXCELLENT article and you quoted two of my fave artists (Heli and Elsita) and introduced me to a new one! (Kreativlink)
alkemystic88
I can relate I feel rejuvenated. Etsy is a distant light guiding us to the sacred land of handmade bliss.
TALKTAGZ
You are so right. I have so many ideas going on in my head and everytime I thought about getting it out there, I would think that no one would be interested or it would never work. Then I finally stopped thinking this way and decided to do it for myself because this is what I enjoy doing. To my surprise things are working out just fine.
It's a sense of freedom when you can get over the hurdle of doubt!
Thanks!
sparklequeen
This was great! Im a newbee, so perfect for me to get some inspiraton to reach and keep going!
blueshedcrafts
A very worthwhile read. It certainly makes sense to believe in your product, develop it and let it signify who and what you are and what you are about. It's certainly not worthwhile simply riping off your neighbours!
tortillagirl
Thanks for all the comments. I'm glad to see that people are finding my article to be useful. I hope it inspires everyone to constantly experiment in their craft. There's always room for more ideas!
Be creative, and be yourself :-)
joyfulpainter
Being new to etsy, I found this article very interesting and confusing at the same time. For example tortillagirl says...do what you do best and do it for yourself and then on the other hand it says try something different. Ok, so mainly I love to paint roses and fruit but I've done other subjects in order to draw attntion. What am I doing wrong? Since I am still not attracting customers? Thanks.
toolisjewelry
Thank you for this wonderful article!
Being new on Etsy and in this small business of mine, I can say it's very confusing. Sometimes when you're taking you're first steps as an artesian who also want to make a living out of his art, you forget about art and focus more on what you think that would sale... This article helped me get back to proportion and burst my flame again.
sweetperversion
Thank you so much for reminding to make what I love! It's so easy to get caught up in what you think people will buy.
jwlrywrkroom
Wonderful article. Thank you for the reminder to do what we love!

victoriavelting
this is exactly what I needed to read. the artist is celebrated as a visionary!
Not only can we make things we need to make our lives more colorful, interesting and organized, but we use what already exists!
dorioriginal
It was a good article for a newcomer to read. I always have made what I like. I think that when you do that people can almost see the love you put in it.
Thanks, Dori

So it's the first day today on etsy. I've got my etsy account just one hour ago:) This article suits me perfect as I aw a new here. Tortillagirl, thanks for great article:)

I'm so happy that people are still reading my article and taking the time to comment. Thank you very much! Stay creative, continue to define your own aesthetic and love what you make. Use it as a means of personal expression. Most of all: Have fun with your shop!
paperhill
Wonderful article! So many great points. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.
ClassicJewels
I'm a newbie so it's very helpful to learn from others. It's quite inspiring to see that the motto here is something like, "Follow your bliss". I love what I do so it's motivating to know that I should keep doing that and convey that every step along the way. Thanks!
paperandinkling
I'm new to etsy too, and this was such a great article! I want to keep finding my "niche" and what is unique about my products & design!
WOODANDTHINGS
My husband and I just joined etsy and appreciate all of the advice the etsy team gives in getting our products listed and displayed in a unique and clear way. This article is a great example of that help.
Cbowe
Thank you for the wonderful article. I am thinking of starting my own little shop in the near future and this was certainly inspiring for me. I think Wayne Gretzky said it best "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take"...
TraceyDay
Great information for someone who wants to take etsy all the way!
starmadecrafts
thanks u that article really helped me very creative and unique
Amberlly
A very inspiring article especially for newbie here in Etsy, including me.
Thank you.
SCRAPPYFOOFADOODLES
Love this! Your part about not worrying what WILL sell, and just making it something you love is glorious. :)
I need to remind myself of this more often and I thank you for that.~ :)
Lesbijouxcrealune
I totally agree and I think it’s a question of having confidence in ourselves and in our opinions. If it’s you and you like the concept, just go ahead and do it. Don’t stop and think, try to trust yourself.
hollowreedart
I'm very encouraged and inspired to share my art and perspective. Just getting my shop started. This was just what I needed to help me focus, overcome my shyness and make more diverse listings. I feel I will find a niche for my quirk and bring some joy to others.
DawnMilstrey
Thanks for the advice! I have recently joined Etsy and I am looking for new ways to get noticed!
myfarmhousekitchen
I've been thinking about starting a shop of my own, but am wearing cement boots. Just can't seem to jump the hurdle. Going in too many directions. After reading this, I am more focused. Just do what you love. DO YOU. BE YOU.
cooljewelryJR
Has the thought ever crossed your mind, "man, I'm so glad I'm me, and not like Miss/Mr. X..." Celebrate who you are and what sets you apart from everyone else. What you know you can do well, with pride, will just fall in place naturally. It may take a little time to fine tune your product, but you will arrive.

sorry, I haven't arrived it appears:

There!
jcraft
Enjoyed the article. Finding your niche is the hardest part but I believe in searching yourself and not getting wrapped up in what others do. We tend to want to see what others have tried, which is fine, but stay true to ourselves and our style is key. Thanks for the article.
Barecubs
how exciting, I cant wait to see what feedback I recieve on my Bare Cub Designs..
amazongirl1
I'm struggling, still haven't found my niche, and feel like I'm outside looking in. Anyone else feel that way?
MonasMane
Very nice article. I am stil up in the air about it is that I want to do exactly.
CalligraphicArtisan
I am new to Etsy and learn daily how much I have yet to learn. One lesson at a time,
I love being part of a community that shares so willingly to help others on their creative path.
Thanks so much.

Totillagirl's article was very inspirational, thank you

how do I get people to find me in my niche?Suggetions, please!
LouisaRose
Thanks for a great article. Im new here and it does sound very daunting at times, but youve articulated what i already knew deep down and so have given me new found enthusiasm!
LorrisArt
Thanks for a wonderful article. I can see the truth in it. Without realizing it, I have been following it. Now that I've been reassured, I'll direct more energy along these lines.
mikeverepatrick
When I was told by a friend about etsy, I have not wasted
time i have log on almost everyday. Now I have my own shop .
But also I am computer challenge I 'd rather be making things. This the way of the world 21st century. I love it!!!!
Thanks etsy and a friend
haniyyajewelz
Thanks for the valuable information and reminder. A newbie like me definitely needs such worthy nudges.
Alpa
I am new on Etsy and I cannot tell you how useful all these articles are. Thank you.
WideEyedMusings
This really resonates with me. It is so tempting to define success by the sales other people make and their profitable ideas. It is a temptation to just emulate that. Reading this really gives me confidence to continue working with what is already in my head...my "own" style.
cherylsmardigras
Thank you for this advice, I love to come up with new ideas, but I'm not sure if they seem origanal.
Laura4ca
Thanks for the article. My thing is I like to do too many things, so now I'll have to try and tie them together or something. Or drop somethings and do just one..........DARN
azurejoy
So encouraging! I know my style and what I love to make, but I had had some doubts as to whether other people would like my creations. Now I am determined to keep creating what I love and focus more on how to be a better artist!
celestialfoundations
This is so true, and applies anywhere in life, or as an artist. Express your true self. Thanks for the article it has inspired me try something new!
adornwithaandm
It is always good to hear someone else's advice....though it is hard not to think about what others might like. As long as we are having fun making what we make-right?
arell
Very helpful. I feel relief thinking that I can make things that I would like and not just something that might sell. It feels very freeing.
glassshack
Hi Tortillagirl! I was looking for a little inspiration and came across your story!! Interesting tips and nice advice; I found what I was looking for, thanks again!
JCParkerFineArt
Thanks for the insight. As a scenic painter, I paint to tell the story of the place or thing. The reinforcement that being passionate is a key to success on Etsy is very helpful.
Sylviecambet
Great article! That's truly what I believe in. Good to keep it in mind...
MyRusticRose
Lovely Article and I adore the book :) I have five girls, and this is a perfect example of what young girls need, a book and characters they can connect with. I am new to Etsy too, but I have an eclectic mix of my own handmade items, others, and antiques. I truly enjoy the fact you've found something you are passionate about and that works for you. I feel the same in my arena (though its mixed items).
Hope to shop from you soon.
amijusARTdesign
great article, i have never even thought to be someone i'm not, and i guess this is what etsy is about, be yourself and make stuff straight from your heart. It can take some time to start selling, but it will come in right time :)
at least you always know who you are and why do you make art. ( i hope not only for money lol )
TwistedKarmaStudio
this article was just what I was looking for. I have been on etsy for about 2 months or so now and have not had a sale and it makes me think that no one likes what I make, it doesn't seem to appeal to people. But I liked my designs and the finished pieces and really don't understand why others don't see what I see in them. LOL elitist artist or arrogant artist in me I guess. I am still trying to fit in and have some new items to post soon, items that I think reflect even more of what I'm about. I am working to make my shop more consistant as well by being a little more consistant with my pictures and the backgrounds, etc. if anyone has more advice for me and other newbies, I know I'd love to have someone come critique my shop.
thanks for the great article, I'm glad I found it as it has re-inspired me to do everything I want to make and create and not worry about it, well maybe worry just a little bit when nothing sells.
yoborobo
Great article! And you're right, it is so important to remember to enjoy the process...and make things that make us happy!
wrappedNwarmth
great article. I copied some of it and put it in my yahoo notepad. Its interesting to me. But, just need to find my niche. LOL
thesundayproject
yeah, great article. a lot of food for thought there, and i'll definitely be spending some time on finding my niche now.

craftsbyposie
Super article! It really helps to keep from mentally getting "scattered"! It was helpful to me. It helped me to stay on course! Thank you!
SpiritBearCreations
I've just read down a very long list of shop names and stopped in on a great many of them here, especially ones that said they were new, to see for myself how long they have been open and how many sales they have had in that time, and what kinds of niches are doing well here. I have been open only a little more than two weeks and am guessing that putting your shop name out here is also good exposure as others may come along behind me and click on my shop too ... I am wondering if my medicine bundles are just too different for mainstream but I want to keep making them so there ya go! Be Well.
ElizaGraysGoods
This article is very motivating! My New Year's Resolution this year is to get my shop rolling on Etsy! I know that I have it in me...and I feel passionate about the site. Snowy New England days will be the perfect time for me to get the creative wheels turning! I need to do this!!!
LeahSutton
I've been here 6 months but is still great hearing how the successful etsians have made it work for them! I still have loads to improve upon & learn. Thanks for all this info!
lunaessence
Thankyou for the motivating article. I have been here for I believe a month and I am also new to all of this. I have a ton more jewelry ready to go that I havent listed yet for fear that I will not sell anything on this site. I also am a new artist that is still finding their way. I will continue to make what gives me joy, but will it sell?
CarolynSalinas
I've been with etsy 6-months but I'm a newby and I definitely want to find my niche....I enjoyed this article and gave me the right kind of encouragement to be true to myself, my vision for my Art...Those Blue Skies are shinin' BRIGHT! Thank You!

Great article! I'm new here, so I could use some good advice.
Planetpollyanna
I am hoping my niche will come through eventually as I, like many others, do have diverse interests/creations but I think my "style" may be starting to gel. At least I hope it is. LOL Thanks for the words of wisdom to follow your heart and passion.
craftsbykash
I enjoyed the article . Like joyfulpainter I to am fairly new to Etsy. Computer skills are not my best nor do I sometimes understand some of the jargon or abrevations that are used.

Thanks TortillaGirl. Sometimes it helps to hear someone else say these things!
thelittlebluehouse
Very encouraging - I am happy to hear that it is okay to be creative in my own way and that I should not try to look like the shop next to me. There is freedom in being who you are.
LJNixonartist
Thank you... a very encouraging article as it inspires and stimulates creativity.
ersimarina
I'm brand new here and finding articles like this make me feel at home. I had to fight an urge to "go commercial", in the sense of posting what I suspect others may like, and I decided to be loyal to myself. Thank you for confirming my decision.
1920
Well said. I certainly will remind myself to be a true artist. Love the article SO MUCH!
TheeGreenPea
I get what you are saying...I love making bottle cap charms and to be honest, I didn't think I would probably sell any of those next to my other items. I just opened my store and that was 1 of the first things I sold! You do have to craft for your self and not think about "well, that's not going to sell." When you do that you fail...you have to remember fist and for most this is not about money...it is about enjoying crafting and just simply getting to show your ideas off.
Great article!
SoulsJoy
imagine your soul's joy and grab it! inspire to be exactly what you envision you are to be...thanks!
Lesliefreemandesigns
Do what you do... it comes out of you, and don't care about anything else is the rule. I a have had so many people tell me in my many years of designing and making things "Are you afraid some will copy you? I just say let them...I will be well on my way to the next thing!! thanks for a great article

This article was very inspiring for me. Really appreciate the advice to be yourself, do things you love and am trying to work my way to that. I teach special students and try to help them find their best, now I need to teach myself. Etsy is a great place and the people are extraordinarily talented

Great article. The important thing is to not look too hard for your style, just be yourself and your style will come through.

Kreaivlink had great advice! I have a long list of things I want to try and make, but instead of experimenting with them I've been concentrating on what I think might "sell"...

tjbinspired
So excited to get started. Looking forward to meeting other creative minds!!!
MyJunkyTrunk
I loved this article! Especially the highlight of some of Elsa's work. I was inspired by her drawing (Elsa/Asle) where she demonstrates that she basically has to force herself to step out of the box and try new things with her art, yet she still stamps everything with her unique signature style. Thanks for sharing!
BridalStudio
Very interesting and thoroughly motivating
I'm always experimenting that's how I began and was so overloaded with creations that I had to find an outlet
I cannot stop once an idea is set ... Being creative is so rewarding and I encourage everyone to use it as food to keep the brain stimulated

Finding a niche is so important and an often overlooked aspect of success. This was a great reminder!
NirehBijoux
MEMENTO AUDERE SEMPER (=Remember to always dare) wrote G. D'Annunzio. I think this is the way to reach new and unexplored frontiers. The problem i am finding on etsy is the really huge amount of items (few visits to my shop). Most people who can see and touch my handmade jewels are enthusiastic. But how deep is the range between a real shop and a virtual one ?
spoonangel21
Ive Just opened my shop on etsy and still awaiting my first sale. It is a very personal thing esposing your own work to the world and feeling confident about it. As yet I don't; but your article is enspiring. I think I need to start to like my own work and believe it is unique to me. I must spend less time looking at other peoples work and wishing mine was as good as theirs and more time looking at my own work and saying 'Hay! Its me and its great!!'
OOOOOOO SCARY!!!!
rooks10904
This was a great article, and inspiring. There are so many talented artists on etsy, but everyone has there own unique style. It's a scary thing, displaying your art for everyone to see, and wondering how it will be received.
glintgear
I love reading these articles. I find that I fall into a trap of "comparison..." And it's a nasty sand trap! This is a great reminder to keep exploring, and playing and developing my own style. And trusting myself. Believing. Great job, all featured artists!
MySerenityWay
I needed that!! It's easy to loose sight and get so wrapped up in thinking about marketing and selling. I need to get back to just enjoying and being fullfilled by my stuff whether it sells or not. Spoonangel21, I'm with you. It is a bit overwhelming. I'm fairly new also, but have had a few sales. That first one is like your first date, you'll not forget it!!
MiaBellaFabCreations
I'm just getting started and think this is great advice so that we can strive to be artistic and creative instead of just productive! I will try to employ this in the future. Thanks so much!
IrishSymbolJewelry
This article is so true. I also find that people will see your spirit in the work that you truely enjoy doing. Thanks for that confirmation and I'll keep on creating what inspires me and what I am passionate about.-Deirdre
WhollyKnitByLisa

I am just starting to explore Esty. I signed up awhile back but got too intimadated,so I backed off.But I want to get started. I am a pet artist. I have a web site petdesignstudio.com. I will try to incorpart the work I offer through the site to Esty. I have along way to go. I really am confused. I have been painting for many years. I am retired. My love of pets sent me into this direction.

Thank you for the inspiring words. The problem for me seems to be that I am a teeny drop in a massive lake full of talented artists. The traffic and sales just haven't been coming my way. Those who have witnessed my work in person find it to be quite unique. I have a creative mind that is always coming up with new things, I just need to find courage to put myself out there!
LizzyBdesigns
Thanks for the great article...very insightful! It is so important for all of us to stay true to ourselves & remember our passion, what drives us to continue to make these wonderful handmade pieces of ourselves to share.
silverandstone62
Great article - full of practical advice and common sense. Very helpful to a newbie like me :)
beadfelter55
very reassuring---for me especially, as i'm trying to work up the courage to get my "feet" wet here! good words to live by, too:)

I really liked this article. I am just starting out and working towards opening up my shop. I love the advice to do what you like. Thank you!

Great article I am so different in life I now need to be different on etsy. I have to reach deep but I know I can do it.
leahmcfallstudio
I love that you don't have to only do one thing...nearly impossible for me...but that you do have to make everything reflect who you really are.
wildbraidart
Several others have written about the experience that I had with my first try with Etsy. I let all of my entries lapse because I got no response whatsoever. I do fiber and bead work that are very similar in design concept and everyone who knows my work talks about how readily identifiable it is. Most of my really creative work is fairly high end price wise. I spend so much time and use fine materials that I cannot have lower prices. I tried doing some lower priced items that still have my unique design aesthetic but these did not attract attention. I have an introduction that explains my work.
However, I have found that none of my work was picked up by anyone at Etsy that sends out emails telling of interesting new work. I'm going to start up my Etsy shop again soon. I did get some advice from other Etsians that I should only list one item a day so that my shop shows up frequently in new listings. I feel that my shop has a very unusual but easily remembered name. Unless I see some income coming in I cannot participate in the showcases which I feel are quite expensive for a one day shot. Showcases should be at least for several days or a week.
Any comments would be appreciated. My work can be found on my own website: wildbraidart.com, http://beadedimages.ning.com/profile/..., facebook and flickr.
I would appreciate any comments to be directed to me at mvidibor@yahoo.com.
Thanks.

Thank you. Just opened my shop and need all the "help" I can get. I tried to show case, but didn't know it was a one day only shot. Since I haven't sold anything yet, I will have to wait to see if I can afford to do that again. My daughter, Fawn McNeill-Barr has her shop here on Etsy and has sold a few paintings here. I'm hoping I can be as successful. Will continue to add to my site and read more of your articles. It's a nice feature, so thank you. Rene'

If anybody has an idea what my "Niche" could be , please come by and look at some of my work and let me know.
I'm a newbie to all this but I'm really passionate about getting some of my work out there and willing to do what it takes. But like Meatloaf said :" but I won't do that" haha

This article was very good. I have taken some notes from the featured artists to help inspire me.

Just opened my shop - there are alot of fabulous artists on etsy, so knowing how to niche/showcase and market oneself is critical for success. Thanks for the great article.
jjkgirlythings
this was a great article. Gave me a lot to think about.I like what I do but there are so many others that do the same thing. It is hard trying to make my product my own. I know that I only like one style of my product and that is what I use most. But this article has me thinking about more ways I can make my greations more of my own.
velvetwoods
Fantastic article.Do what makes you happy and everything else will fall into place. Thanks for this info !!
craftaria
That's exactly what i'm trying to do! Find my personal style to start selling here on Etsy.
Thanks for the information.

This article is inspiring! I was a little afraid of this computer sitting in front of me, but now I see that it's my way to my own unique universe and I'm about to explore. Thanks!

I am glad to read this - I have had a few customers, mostly for work I bid for on alchemy - that it really fun and it stretches you. Now I'm waiting for someone to love the things I love ( which of course changes month to month - can you spell ADHD?) Thanks for reminding us to keep making what we love!
monkeyandsquirrel
Great article. It can be tempting to play to the crowd, but what's really special about etsy is how many different points of view are out there. Very insiring!

Good stuff! :-) I'm excited to see how my niche will grow over time. :-) People do have a style all their own, no two items are alike unless they are made by a machine - each person adds their own character to a creation, be it a jelly recipe, a knitted afghan or a picture. One person using resources to make things which others will enjoy :-) Keep on creating all! :-)

Hello, my name is stella and I just joined this group from etsy.
I am currently seeking to find my niche. Any suggestions are definetly appreciated

LucysCupboard
This was great advice. I just joined Etsy and am learning more everyday. There's so much to know and so many wonderful artists, it is a bit overwhelming. With so many sites its difficult to imagine how anyone will even find me! I do have a question about the guides... why do some shops show up many times before the first time mine does? Any suggestions for becoming more visible would be greatly appreciated.
OrganicElements
I agree with the gist of this article.. be true to yourself and make the things you like. Buyers will follow.

That is some good inspiration, Just stick to the universe I all ready know, the one I'm already in! The beautiful creation God has made.

Thanks for this article. Just lost a job for the second time this year and was in need of some motivation to get my shop going in the right direction.

Thanks, as a newcomer to esty I'm glad there are so many places to find help with the site!
tortillagirl
Thanks so much to everyone who has found inspiration in my article and for taking the the time to convo me or comment about it. Keep experimenting in your craft and stay creative! If you are still searching for your niche keep defining your personal aesthetic through ways that work for you: making collages, photographing objects spontaneously, keeping notebooks...there are tons of different ways and some work better for others. Make what your instincts tell you to make instead of looking at what everyone else is doing (it's harder to fit into a niche if someone else is already in it!). When you find your own niche, you'll feel so comfortable in it you'll know that you've found it.

Thank you so much for your article - it is really great that people help each other here. It makes selling so much more fun!

I am new to Etsy, I love to make things and I love vintage things, I am still trying to find my niche so this will be of great help!:) Thank you Etsy!

Thank you for reminding us newbees to trust in our creativity. Being in the corporate world starts to shut down the creative processes and it's difficult to let the creative side of your brain relax when it's been pushed in a corner for so long.
People keep telling me "you could sell to big stores - and make a pile of money". I'm on Etsy because I don't want to do production work. I think the variety of my collection and the materials I get to play with speak to my overall style. I looked at my store they other day and asked - "do these items reflect my personnal taste and do I really want to keep them for myself"? The answer was, YES - that makes me feel good about what I'm doing, even if no one buys anything. Making things is just something a have to do - selling on ETSY justifies my need to buy more materials!
banfflines
Thank you for the info. Being a little new to Etsy and not having sold anything I really appreciate all of the very informative articles. I will certainly have to try and find my "niche".

thank you. I am a first timer with Etsy and the talent on here is awesome! Great article

Great article. Thanks for that. Being true to yourself is what it really comes down to. Thanks for the reminder.

Hi all! I'm also a first timer with Etsy and I'm impressed about the variety of stuff that can be found here. It's truly awesome!

As often in my life, reminders are great. Thank you for the article and inspirational vibe!

great article. finding one's style is key.
love this place, so many talented people with such a variety to offer.

Love the article - FIND MY THING and don't FOCUS ON SELLING ITEMS! Okay! I will make that work for me!!!
heahea
I've been overwhelmed with the set up and promotion side but your article reminded me to return to the creative process and I love that! Thanks!
ennaneve
the funny thing is, i was thinking about how my stuff SHOULDN'T look different because it would stand out in a bad way. the truth is, i have my own style and it's OK if it doesn't stand out to some people and if not everyone gets it. i get it, and i love doing it.
thanks for this article!!
EarthenTreasures
I enjoyed reading this article, getting started is certainly a challenge! Thanks!

What a great article. I just started my shop on Etsy and it's overwhelming for me to get everything in order. thanks for the much needed info.

Great article!
So true..not just for ETSY, but as a way of living- be yourself...no matter what they say...

Excellent article!
To be creative and original is always my goal. Sometimes we try too hard to create something that others will like...that we think will sell. This article was a great wake up call for me!
jewelrybyfonda
Excellent article! The reason we are all here is because all of us have something of ourselves we want to share.

Great article. Inspired again. They all do what they do in their own unique way. I needed that reminder to stay true to myself.

Hello
Great place to learn about how to get your crafts out to the world.
aPotteryPear
I am finding that consistency is a little tricky for me but gives me something to work for.
MuralMamasTreasures
Very interesting article. I am still working on my niche. Trouble is i'm too easily distracted. I'm new to Etsy and I like doing the things I do so I'm hoping there's someone else out there who will like it too.
EachBeadCounts
I love your support on going into your creative self and allowing the work to come from that place. It is difficult to calculate your own niche since no one else ever thinks exactly the way you do.
It seems if you are true to yourself and personalize the advice you get (from Etsy and other places) your niche will evolve out of your own center.
What do you think?
anne4bags
Like all the other new sellers I feel a little overwhelmed, and so this article was very timely. Thanks for all the support and help that there is. People seem to be very generous with their time and advice.
I like the reminder that people are not only buying the item but also the personality, ideas, dreams and creativity that goes with that lovely item.
talulahblue
This gives me some hope, as I make many items which I hope have a stamp of my individuality on them xx
BlueCrushBeads
Great article!
I'm a newbie and kinda proud of it. Some pieces look similar. I believe this is where the difference may lie. I find myself lost trying to describe my pieces. I want to get in my own zone and just start story telling, but then my mind clicks back into reality and I wonder...are people going to think im on drugs?
Standing out is a good thing!! I just got confirmation after reading this article and I may just tell stories. Everyone loves a good story! I'm also going to experiment with other crafts.
Thanks alot :)
GemstoneDreams
Great Article!!! Nothing more needs to be said..."Get Out of The Box!" Yeah!
fairybiz
reading this article inspires me to keep on producing work from my little world! Its easy to get caught up in the rat race and go for stuff that you think people will like. I just wish I had more time to produce original work. . .or maybe I should make time.
WiseCrafter
That was great advice for a new seller. I've had a storefront in Loon Lake for 16 years and have a quite 'distinct' style. I am really excited about the prospect of a wider audience. I've thrown away items that I've made simply because I didn't like them and some friends actually have gone into my trash to retrieve them.
But being a Virgo, I'm a tad picky. I intend to read and reread all the wonderful articles that successful Etsians have written and take full advantage of their wisdom.
Thanks for a great article.
izadora118
Great article, everything I do i do for myself and I love every single piece - the only jewellery that isnt mine is the jewelery someone asks me to make for them, their preference so to speak... I have always been this way. Having studied illustration and design at University I understand the "make what you love" approach, I dont think you would be very happy if you didnt after all I believe it is a natural creative tendancy anyway.
Oh yes you can copy stuff but would you be happy doing that? Whilst at Uni we were encouraged to look at how painters developed their painting and to copy a painting ie, a van gough, then were asked to paint a self portrait in the style of the artist we had originally chosen to copy. this was a great learning curve because from this your own ideas and styles emerge. Artist love to be together to encourage and inspire so to do Etsians and we do learn and get ideas from each other and are truy inspired. sorry for going on so.
ePLUSc
Thanks for the great article....Etsy is all about different niches, and I'm still working on my own. I appreciate the pointers!
makentake
Wow! This article changed my whole outlook. I am new to etsy and have been trying to figure out what sells. My husband has been out of work for 7 months now so that has been my focus (we need some income). I love scrapbooking and making cards but lately it has been a chore. Now I am going to let go of that pressure and go back to enjoying myself. I can already feel the inspiration. Thanks everyone.
claudia2008
I enjoyed the article very much. Although I've been striving to make the site "MY STORE", I hadn't really thought about it as a "niche". And I like what you say about making it as if it is for yourself. I use or have used everything I've made. I wouldn't sell something that I couldn't or wouldn't use myself.
Thanks for the encouraging article.
surfingteal
Great advice, thanks! It is also rare to be nudged in the direction of being/expressing yourself sometimes, so to have Etsy as an anything original goes kind of environment is very refreshing and inspiring.
kimmae86
Great tips! thanks! I just started my shop on Etsy and am trying to find my niche right now!

So glad I stumbled upon this article! This is just what I was looking for!
AaronWhitmoyer
I think I may already have applied these techniques. I would like to hear from others to see what you think.
CarolMaschlerJewelry
Very important advice! This only works if it's from the heart, you know?? Thank you!
alienlabel
I'm sure everyone's said it but I'll say it from my own heart too...
Thankyouthankyouthankyou!
We all need a reminder that creativity is not about trying to match the incredible talent of others, but exploring and enjoying the secret world of our own imaginations... and trusting that by being faithful to that world, we might have something special we can offer to the outside world!
AspenTreeYarns
A good article, and helpful to those of us who struggle with confidence and worrying that nothing we do is good enough...
naturesheavenlyart
Thankyou for taking the time to write this......I am new here, however I have been slowly creating products and ideas from the heart since a job loss 2 years ago. With each new idea/drawing/painting I ask family what they think and for the most part they have really liked it, but there have been some comments on expanding and appealing to a wider range of people since I suppose " it isn't everyones cup of tea" as one said......I guess they thought/think I have narrowed interest with what I do. With even the small amount of comments like that I have second guessed myself and have tried to step out of "my box" to find myself in uncomfortable and frustrating territory....it just isn't me, it doesn't feel right.....so thankyou for the encouragement to stay with what is in my heart and the subject that I love to draw/paint for others to enjoy.
knowingphotography
Thank you for sharing this article! I love the fact that you write about paving your own path and not being swayed by what others are selling because in the end this is really about our own personal art. Thanks for the advice!
lizardsplay
Thank you so much. There is a lot to think about in your article.
jenardill
I love this advice! I have also found that when I do my own thing and produce something that I really love, then I am successful. Thanks for helping me solidify this in my store!
knowingphotography
great article!!! very very helpful! thank you for sharing*
braindea
I totally agree with this article. A unique niche is hard to come by - either since it's already occupied, or a unique idea you might have can be either impractical or not within ones own specialty.
But putting your own spin, stamp, or style on even well-trodden ideas is golden. It's what really lets us be expressive. Your final thoughts on customer service are well taken as well. Who doesn't want repeat-customers?!
wJsculpture
Thank you for this great article. It has helped in a number of ways. I need to beef up my profile and get some of the new stuff up there. Great incentive to get moving!
