Etsy's Handmade Blog
Seller How-To: Packaging Ideas

Since I started working for Etsy I turned from a full time seller to a full time buyer. (Ok, maybe I'm exaggerating. I'm not shopping all the time...Sometimes I've spent all my money and I'm just adding to my favorites.)  My very favorite thing about buying on Etsy is getting packages — it's like a little mini party each time, thanks to the thoughtful packaging Etsy sellers put together! Ribbons, stickers, stamps, extra little goodies, oh my.  What a delight!

So, dear sellers, why not show this off in your item listings?! Use one of your photos to let your shoppers know how beautiful your handmade items (and packaging!) are! With the holidays around the corner, it's also good to let your buyers know your items will come ready for giving.  I've selected a few sellers who do this already, and do it quite well.  Click the items to see the gems that are hidden inside!

Wow, I love that envelope! Great article!

Nov. 12, 2008 at 6:27 p.m. MagicalPonyFarm

I love to make my packaging look cute, but I keep the outside simple, and the inside exciting. I worry that if it looks too flashy or appealing on the outside someone might be tempted to see what's inside! hehe

"cute handmade stuff inside..." clever!! how you present your goods is very important and says a lot about you as an artist and how you (and your buyer) value your art.

Nov. 13, 2008 at 10:08 a.m. popsiclestick

I crochet blankets, so I get my tags custom made by heyjenrenee. Because they're mostly for babies, I have her do initials and then tag my blankets with the recipient's letter. Love the upcycled plastic mailers and am inspired to surf around and find more Etsy-made wrappings. Much thanks!

Nov. 13, 2008 at 10:10 a.m. autumnsarrival

Wonderful ideas- I also make little boxes out of scrapbook paper for each pair of shoes- that way it feels like Christmas every time a buyer receives their order. I do it because it feels special to each one & I know I can't wait to open the little boxes to see what's inside- and it makes it so much easier for gift giving.

Nov. 13, 2008 at 10:35 a.m. nichan

thank you for the inspiration...I'm looking for bag packaging for international/worldwide shipping...one of the boxes inspires, indeed b(^.^) ...
Hmmm...i don't think for international package, outside decoration can be applied, but I think inside decoration can

Nov. 13, 2008 at 10:44 a.m. soap

pretty packaging! i've been switching up my soap packaging, printing my own designs but i've been burning through a lot of ink this year. i might try to standardize it more during the holidays since my cartridges have been running on "low" recently.

thanks for the article, danielle!

Nov. 13, 2008 at 11:33 a.m. PaintedHorse

Wow! Thank you for this great article! I am all about gift wrapping.

I want my clients to know just how much I appreciate them finding my shop and purchasing one of my designs. When they receive my package, the outer carton is totally recycled and actually plain, but then there is pretty "gift" inside.

Here is a link to one of my photos. I try to have a photo of my packaging on all of my designs.

There is only one thing better than receiving a present - a present that comes in the mail!!
I gift wrap all my items and make sure that it looks just adorable so the wonderful person receiving it is thrilled. I always put 'picture' stamps on my packages aswell - I love stamps - and I always try to wrap the outside in plain brown paper - How Exciting!!
When I gift wrap I imagine that it will be me opening it - and I Love presents!

Nov. 15, 2008 at 11:11 a.m. MagnoliaFern

I haven't worked out a difinitive packing system, but usually for a fish bowl, it goes in a small cardboard box with our etsy address on it, the small box is padded with plain newsprint from an old sketching book, a few cheery hearts cut from magazines, a buisness card and then that all goes in a medium box from the post office.

Thanks for sharing those great ideas! :)

Nov. 18, 2008 at 6:25 p.m. bijougirldesigns

I'm going to start adding photos of my packaging as well, it's very pretty (if I don't say so myself) but what I'm wondering is this, should I sacrifice one of five pictures in every listing? Or would it work in every other listing?
I would love it if Etsy thought about adding one or two picture ploads onto our profile page...because that would be an excellent way to showcase packaging as well. Just a thought...

Nov. 18, 2008 at 6:28 p.m. SandFibers

I started using my last photo to show the gift wrapping in just about every listing when we got the extra photo almost two years ago. (Tho' my wrapping has changed, become more "special," since I ran out of the ribbon I had been using, so I guess I should change the photo as well.) hehe Great article! :D

Nov. 18, 2008 at 6:49 p.m. HModine

Such great ideas here!

Nov. 18, 2008 at 7:16 p.m. TheQuiltedPumpkin

Good ideas...things to remember! When I buy I love to receive my purchase in cool, unique packaging. It makes me feel special :) , and I admire the crafter who takes that li'l extra step to wrap her handmade in nice packaging. To me, from beginning to end, she cares about her workmanship. Recently, I've received earrings in some unique packaging from duckduckGoosestuff. I like her special paper, but what I especially liked was the yarn she used to tie up her tiny package...multi-colored and kind of natty...good stuff!

Nov. 18, 2008 at 7:36 p.m. bonjourpierre

such cute ideas! I really like the bags that say, "cute handmade stuff inside." How clever!

I package all my jewelry in hand-sewn pouches made from vintage-inspired fabric. It takes me about 20 minutes to sew one pouch, but I think it gives my items an extra special touch.

Great creativity for getting greener!

Nov. 19, 2008 at 3:12 a.m. FoxyGknits

These are great ideas for packaging, and most of the items appear to be small - with the exception of the rewined recycled glassware. I am new to etsy and would love for you to stop by and share any ideas and/or suggestions for gift wrapping scarves, shawls and wraps.

Thank you daniellexo for another fantastic article. And also your favorites - I loved just about everything in there! You are so brilliant at finding fascinating things.

Nov. 21, 2008 at 1:58 a.m. gingerlilydesigns

thanks for op for provoking this discussion. i've wrestled with this for years.

i have to balance out the need for protection for relatively fragile, or, at least, squashable, jewelry with something lightweight for shipping.

stymied for years, yesterday i ran across a stash of empty altoid tins. hummmm. the right size, with earrings protected by bubble wrap inside so they are not slippin' and a slidin' - strong enough that the post office probably won't crush them.

i've not the time to decorate each according to the little cache of jewels it will hold, but some spray paint and a filigree might just do it, maybe a scattering of little paper flowers.....

extras? just imho - in 9 years of buying and selling online, i've received items from only one seller that are useful - peppermint drops. the little dodads otherwise have been of the sort that i keep them for a year, never quite finding the right place to store them, not to my taste and so not usable in my work, and then either pitch them or give them away. i'm happy receiving my purchase quickly and well protected in shipping. that's enough for me.

May 12, 2009 at 4:08 p.m. ClaudineMJ

I actually just started wrapping my stuff a little cuter lately. I'm a new seller but I realized it would be nice to have a nice wrapping. So I was going to buy some pre-made labels and then my very crafty MIL said, "why not make your own with stencils and other?" So that's what I've been doing. Each item is different depending on who I'm making it for and what I have available but I did take a photo and post it on my listings. It's really so much fun to see what everyone does. Everyday I grow more and more interested in all things ETSY! LOL

May 13, 2009 at 12:03 a.m. MiladyLeela

I recently added a post to my blog regarding packaging. It's clear to me now that I must add the photos to my etsy listings, as well!
Thanks so much for the input!

I loved the article and have started adding pictures to my products as well. I was unable to open the pdf on the design from Kits and Caboodles, however. Hope that will work soon.

Thanks for the tips. Think receiving packages one of the prime Etsy buyer experiences. It's like receiving a gift from a friend -- probably anything packaged with that in mind is sure to please.

New trend in recycled materials is great too. Tip for flat paper items: cellophane bags are eco-friendly!

Most, if not all, of my items have a picture of my packaging so my customers can see what they are likely to receive when they request a gift box. I do not, however, include gift packaging automatically because I value the environment too much to send something that may just be thrown in the trash.

I love receiving items in repurposed packaging.

I love the kraft envelopes but will they tear during the shipping process is my worry. Any suggestions?

Very cute ideas! I usually include something extra with my shipments, and since I sell original artwork, I always do a sketch on the envelope...just to make it pretty and stand out in the mail.

Thank you for all the ideas!! I am still working on my packaging though I always wrap my items in tissue and cording which I make from my weaving yarns! I love brown paper packages and maybe I should rethink!! Anyway, Thanks!!!!

I was so happy to receive my first Etsy purchase – both because I love getting mail and it seemed so lovingly put together, with instructions and a gorgeous little tag. Not sure how I'm going to step up my own packaging while staying green, but I'll try!

Received a parcel in the post last week (birthday present to myself!) from Where The Lovely Things Are! Two beautiful necklaces... the wrapping was so nice I was tempted to just keep them wrapped for a while! Check it out at http://loopiforyou.blogspot.com/2009/...

This is a Great article! I was just thinking how nice my own packaging looks when I send it out and I'd like to show it in one of the listing photos. I'd love to be able to box up my items, but as soon as I do, with the thickness of a box, CANADA POST wants $10+for shipping!
