Etsy's Handmade Blog
Seller How-To: Top 10 Graphic Designs to Give Your Shop the Edge

There is a proverb which says that experience is a formidable teacher — it hands the test first and the lesson afterward. Graphic design, the studiously crafted personality profile of an individual, is one of most formidable teachers of all. A graphic designer has to tread on speculation and potentiality, and there is a certain degree of risk involved in the creation of art that looks not inwardly to oneself, but to the customer.

However, good design does not simply "exist." It also "does," and it is most effective when communicating objectives close to our hearts. In my little sphere as a graphic artist, good design teaches that we are not here simply to make a living, but to bring back locality and handmade value in a world of increasing abstraction.

This is a list of 10 different (and progressively expansive) ways in which graphic design can give your shop the edge by building a professional, consistent image, while letting the world know you mean (handmade) business!

Custom Etsy Banner By jackandmolly, $30.

1. The banner. The first step of graphic design, and one's immediate identification for sellers and buyers alike, banners can be made using a wide range of graphic programs — from the free (but very good) GIMP to the more challenging Adobe Photoshop.

Custom LOGO DESIGN and BUSINESS CARD by ARTbyNIKA, $120.

2. The logo. More expansive than the banner (which can be changed as often as desired), the logo is a symbol of constancy and becomes one's business ID to the world. Consistent use of the logo is the key to clear communication and maximum visual impact. It acquaints others with your shop.

Custom Character by McPrincessMaree, $50.

3. The custom-character. Similar to the logo in creating an identity, but far more detailed is the custom character. Its style can range from humorous and simple to high-fashion, and is an endearing, memorable component of branding. This is becoming more popular with online, socially-networked sites and may be used as an avatar.

preFAB Business Cards by nbcreative, $15.

4. The business card. This is by far the most efficient method of making oneself known to the world, and is therefore extremely important. Many people collect striking designs; to quote a fellow Etsian upon seeing some formidable business cards, "These will end up being retained by the recipients as art!"

Custom graphic design Twin Stylish Marketing Brochures by CraftyChefGraphics, $150.

5. The postcard or brochure. For those who wish to give product details and photographs that cannot fit within the storage-space of a single business card, the brochure is a very useful (and personal!) way of communicating with one's audience.

Darby Website Template - Complete 4 Page Site by byMasselyn, $100.

6. The website. When it comes to websites, as elsewhere, less is more: simple, easy-to-navigate and stylish designs inspire. If you have many photographs that you wish to showcase, a personal website is the ideal place to do so. Look for a web-designer who knows how to install a Coppermine photo system for easy uploading, clear layouts divided by category, and minimum maintenance work.

Dark Spark Hang Tags - Build Your Own - 2 Sided by lolaness, $30.

7. The product thingamabobs. This is a wide-ranging section which can include anything from product labels and stickers to ornamental gift tags. A stylish and eye-catching label exudes confidence, consistency and professionalism, encouraging the buyer that they have made an excellent selection.

Custom Rubber Stamp - Girl on Bike Bookplate by babyjewels, $21.

8. The vector. Vector graphics are two-dimensional, flat images — beautiful for their austere simplicity and limited number of colors. They are perfect for letterpress work, for the creation of stamps, and can be easily transferred onto the less conventional wood or acrylic gift-tags.

PREMADE graphic design personal chef or catering logo, business card, postcard, and letterhead for fliers  by CookingClipArt, $75.

9. The letterhead. These are slightly sneaky (yet very professional!) ways of influencing others to visit your shop without having to ask. A good letterhead design is thus a powerful marketing tool with many benefits.

Etsy Business Package by Thompsondesigns, $50.

10. ...and finally, the horn of plenty! To maintain consistency, it is important to use the same graphic designer throughout. For that reason, many graphic artists offer a cornucopia of selections in a single package.

I agree, one of the most important things about a shop is its presentation. If the seller has bothered with these details, I know they really care about what they make. I agree with SusanFaye..graphics should enhance our shops, not detract from what we sell. It's tempting to go overboard though! Great article.

Interesting article! This really makes me want to open up Photoshop and try to come up with something. Though, I usually get tired of my own designs very quickly, so maybe I should get a Pro here on Etsy to do it.

July 23, 2009 at 11:49 a.m. ajoyfulstudio

Thank you so much for bringing more information to light about graphic designers on Etsy. Such a wonderful read! I create everything from banners, to business cards, to blog headers, and on and on. It's such a creative release and it is always wonderful to hear when the customer says they ABSOLUTELY LOVE their shop items. It's a great way to meet people on Etsy too - graphic design rocks!!! =)

July 23, 2009 at 11:51 a.m. amber84

this is SO true. ALL businesses need to establish their brand. A logo is the best way to build that recognition.

the logo in 'related items' with the green "j" and the dinosaur is one I created for a fellow etsy seller! If anyone needs branding or a logo check out my shop. :)

July 23, 2009 at 11:53 a.m. McPrincessMaree

Fantastic article Winchester! Thank you so much for including me! It's an honor! :)

great idea to sell handmade etsy banners!

July 23, 2009 at 12:08 p.m. pogoshop

Here at Etsy, the avatar is pretty important. I love the one that my daughter made for me. I think it's visually simple, but gives a lot of info, even in thumbnail size. This little guy is also the star of my banner, mini Moos, and Moo stickers. I agree with Mr. Lambourne about consistency making a memorable impact. Thanks,Jen!

July 23, 2009 at 12:09 p.m. ateliermaji

Thank you for the wonderful article! ...and of course, your personal graphics work is simply amazing.

July 23, 2009 at 12:13 p.m. WinchesterLambourne

I agree with you about the avatar - I probably should have included something about it here. It's certainly helpful in attracting attention in the forums for example.

(But Winchester Lambourne is a Miss. *giggle*)

Great name and great article, Ms. Lambourne.

July 23, 2009 at 12:28 p.m. slidesideways

Thank you for writing this article! As a graphic designer it is sometimes hard to tell people how much their logo and the design of their brand, is an important piece and investment of their business, just as much as a quality product is.

July 23, 2009 at 12:30 p.m. BabbidgePatch

great info ~ thank you!

my tip: my business card is designed so that I can fold it and use it as a hang tag ~ the front with my shop name and logo; the back has my name, web address & other info. I add product specific information to the inside.

Interesting read, i gotta say, as a graphic designer myself it frustrates me how people seem to think they can do without the professionals - yes, some people do have a natural flare for design and can do without the professionals, but please, have the common sense to know if you're one of those people.

There's a saying "Good design goes to heaven, bad design goes everywhere"

It's sadly often so true!

FYI-- For all you Mac people, the new iWeb (on iLife) is absolutely excellent for making your own website and super easy... really, SUPER easy! :D I just did mine and am loving it, you'd never know it was a drag and drop type program (it's basically Pages that allows you to post to the web)!!!

July 25, 2009 at 3:38 a.m. therebirthofnyela

I think I'm going to start over with mine...there are some very useful ideas here. The main thing I need to do is tie everything (Twitter, FB fan page, blog) together.

Being featured here seriously made me do a little dance!

What an honor to be included in this post. THANK YOU!!

It's wonderful to see the graphic designers of etsy getting some exposure.

THANKS!!

Great article! If you haven't already, please do take a look at the author's shop. She did a great job of spotlighting the work of other designers, but she is an incredible designer herself. She has made most of my graphics on and off etsy and I couldn't be happier!

Though I LOVE the article because it shows people just how important this aspect of their business is, I could wish that the COST of it all were also discussed.

Graphic Artists put so much of themselves into their designs and yet the price they charge is pennies for the overall work load.

The prices give the impression that graphic design is the dregs of art. It's not WORTH anything. People pay thousands of dollars a year to re-brand themselves. Shop owners should be looking at these banners as investments, not as something they should be getting for pennies. Whether the shop is a hobby or professional doesn't matter because they have the potential to make money.

Think about it. A banner will take about an hour to plan and execute if it is simple. That's not counting whatever correspondence with the customer happened before and also doesn't count revisions. Does that sound like it's worth 5$? People who flip burgers earn more than that.

I think that's the only reason I do not offer my graphic services on Etsy. I don't want to be known because I'm CHEAP...I want to be known because I'm GOOD. I don't want to contribute to the idea that my craft is worth less than flipping burgers.

I agree with gifteddesigns. Designing banners is an art in itself. It takes time to create each design as would a piece of art onto canvas.
Good article too!

This has been sooooo helpful. Thanks so much for the tips. As someone new to etsy and the world of the internet (we just connected to the internet for the first time 3 months ago!) I'm learning everyday. Everyone's shop's look fantastic, so hopefully now I can try and put some of these tips to good use.

I do have a graphic design tip- If you come across a seller with Sea Dream in her name DONT USE HER! Getting her to respond takes months. I placed a custom order back in July and it's Nov 1st and she refuses to respond to me. I have tried going through ETSY Abuse, and hopefully they can see why she takes orders and refuses to honor her word. I have a holiday boutique soon and the show sponsor needs my banners and she knows this. What a terrible experience with the entire thing.
