Sellers! Here's a great tip from a forum thread, which was started many moons ago, to help you with tagging your items: Dyno recommends this model of starting with the general and going to the more specific. She uses a sweater as an example:
sweater (item)
wool (material)
cardigan (type)
fine or thin (type of knit)
blue (color)
tan (color)
stripe (design)
medium (size)
fitted (style/fit)
classic (style)
feminine (style)
casual (occasion)
If you're in need of more help with tagging, check out this post Guidelines & Tips: Tagging on Etsy, Tag Workshop Recap, and Shop Makeover series: Tagging for Success.

This would work great if the top level categories were exclusionary. (And maybe the second level, too!)

Great method for Etsy, but from a wider viewpoint........not good for the search engines, which might be just as important, if not more so.
