Etsy's Handmade Blog
News From the Craft + Style Blogosphere: April 2, 2009

"A writer should write with his eyes and a painter paint with his ears." - Gertrude Stein

This week's News From the Craft + Style Blogosphere has some new buzzwords of note (zakka!), primitive interiors, anonymous folk art treasures, emotive fairy tale photoshoots, imaginative sculpture beyond description, classic fashions of yore, and delicate handiwork to drool over.

Read on!

Anonymous Works is, hands down, my new favorite blog. They collect and display anonymous vernacular treasures found on the internet. I can't even tell you the amount of time I've spent poring over this site. Some of the stuff is even for sale, so make sure to check back often!

I'm all about home design and interiors as of late, and Japanese store Five From the Ground has that indescribable old-but-not-kitschy, well-designed-antiques-but-still-useful aesthetic that I'm so gaga over. This design phenomenon is apparently known as Zakka, which is described as "the art of seeing the savvy in the ordinary and mundane." I couldn't imagine a more appealing concept! Shary Boyle's sculpture blows my mind. I don't have any words besides a Homer Simpson-esque drooling sound. Amazing! [Via Lady Lavona's Cabinet of Curiosities]

Shavingkit clued me into Archival Clothing, a blog dedicated to, well, archiving old clothing. The blogger behind it is "obsessed with austerity, build quality, and durable woolens," and I have to say that the timeless qualities of the clothing makes me want to build a wardrobe that has no timestamp. Check out these sweaters from yesteryear for some prime examples.

Richard Sarson's work is a ornate, dizzying, and intense: all great qualities, in my opinion.

This photo spread from W Magazine combines so many inspiring aspects: autumn, a surrealist palette, absurdity (bears much?!), and fairy tales. [Via Refinery 29]

So many fantastic elements rolled up into those figurines. Finds new use for a curio cabinet. Do love the bear photographs as well, whimsical, chic and spooky.

Shary Boyle's sculpture is amazing. It reminds me of an old print I saw explaining the process of reincarnation. The concept seems complex, but the presentation is very approachable and familiar. Love it!
