"Don’t make something unless it is both necessary and useful; but if it is both necessary and useful, don't hesitate to make it beautiful." - A very quotable Shaker lesson

This week's edition of News From the Craft + Style Blogosphere is full of art and design. Get ready for over-the-top novelty sweaters, a drawing diary, artwork interpreted into natural inspiration, intricate avant garde fashions (some channeling the 1930s!), crochet portraits that will blow your mind, and decidedly unorthodox design ideas.

Read on!

I love the unorthodox designs from Sander Mulder. The geometric light fixture is my dream come true! I also love the slightly jarring effect of the headless "subwoofers." [Via Design Milk]

Avant garde fashion is always my favorite eye candy. The Twentyten's collection is so 1980s meets 1940s silhouettes. The faux bangs on the models is a plus. (I also love the fade out effect on the tights. Can I find those on Etsy, I wonder...?) [Via Rackk and Ruin]

Saint Verde certainly knows how to make photo allegories! This collection of images compares the simplicity of nature with an art form that emulates its most essential qualities. I think the results are so fitting. [Via Saint Verde Digest]

You may wish to deny it, but the wacky (aka Cosby) sweater is back. I know that I'm a long time lover of this trend, and I'm a huge proponent of its return! Don't deny the novelty sweater: embrace your inner Cosby. [Via Refinery 29]

johamilton1.jpgjohamilton21.jpgPicture_3.pngPicture_4.pngPicture_2.png

WOW. Jo Hamilton's crochet portraits are so incredible. How does she does she do that?! If you're in Portland, go check out her work at Stumptown Downtown. I can only imagine how amazing this is in person. [Via Hallo Fritz and Eric Beug]

Jalmar Staaf has been doing a dated monthly illustration for the last sixteen years (and will continue indefinitely!). It's such a pleasure to dig through his drawing diary and see how his work has evolved. [Via Nothing Is New]

As usual, more intriguing, fascinating finds. I have to say the "subwoofers" dog-body cookie jar stopped me dead in my tracks. And who says yarn-painting has to be reserved for Elementary art lessons? Very nice!

One of my favorite Shaker quotes! Thank you for bringing awareness to this beautiful group of people! I live near the last surviving Shaker Village and I strongly believe that everyone should do anything within their power to celebrate them and to help them live on for future generations to enjoy in real life and not just in history books. http://www.shaker.lib.me.us/

The refinery29 link (about the 80s sweater) does weird things with my computer. When I close the page, it opens 2 new ones with the same link. I had to close all programs and reset my computer. :-(
