"Form follows function — that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union." — Frank Lloyd Wright
This week's edition of News From the Craft + Style Blogosphere is theatrical, bold and full of red and black. (Must be my mood this week!) Look for circus fashion fit for the ringmaster, lingerie where you least expect it, a colorful fashion conundrum, cigarette smoke that is pleasing to the eyes, and a forgotten chapel full of prosthetics.
Read on!
The circus lends itself to fashion editorial like none other. The styles are eye catching, bright and totally theatrical. I'm loving this circus spread from May's Vogue Germany, shot by Koto Bolofo. I totally identify this with the burlesque and circus scene on Etsy... [Via Fashion Gone Rogue]
The International Contemporary Furniture Fair seemed to be on everyone's lips last week. I never got a chance to go to the show, but the documentation online makes it seem just like I was there! The work involved varies wildly, and this lingerie chandelier is up for debate! What say you? (I didn't think it would appeal to me, but honestly, I kind of love it.) [Via Apartment Therapy]
This amazing wallpaper from Trove is another ICFF find. Though it may look slightly floral at a distance, it is actually hi-res images of cigarette smoke printed on wallpaper. I'd like ten rolls, please.
Morbid Anatomy's unique viewpoint on cultural anthropology and human anatomy never ceases to entice. These photos come from St. Roch Cemetery and Chapel in New Orleans, which looks like a museum from another time. According to Morbid Anatomy, "The St. Roch chapel — located in a Gothic revival chapel in a lonely, stark cemetery — is hushed and poignant, filled with an unsettling rotting smell; the walls are covered with a lavish, decaying collection of cast-off prosthetics, anatomical-themed votives, and crutches..." As someone who is obsessed with prosthetics, relics, and how the body is represented in art, this is my dream come true. (Look at the eyes in the bowl!)
Red clothing has got to be one of the hardest things to pull off successfully. Susie Bubble recently chronicled her scarlet inspirations and then theorized how to play it out. I think it was pretty successful! (P.S. Does her neckpiece look familiar? It's from Etsy seller giia!) [Via Style Bubble]

My grandma had a room filled with religious statues like the St. Lucy (her eyes on a plate!) one from the Morbid Anatomy cemetery blog post. Soo creepy and fantastic. Love this!

There is so much to look at within these photos. Thanks for sharing. I am off to inspect them further :) !

The fluid dynamics of cigarette smoke make for some beautiful wallpaper.
Sometimes I appreciate the existence of things and the quixotic nature of their creators without necessarily wanting to own them, like the lingerie chandelier.
The red look fabulous & I love the angel-cat.

brings me back to my childhood...those creepy statues

mini story the st. roch cemetery and chapel images reminded me of: when i was little we rented a house from an old woman who, i kid you not, had a room above the garage which was locked but she gave my mum the key but we were told never to enter. duh. of course first thing we went in...through a crawl space which was the only way to get there (really i'm not making this up)..and the room was all white but very decrepit and dirty with peeling paint and a broken window and a hornets nest and it was all set up with old white baby basinets and worn out old bisque dolls all falling apart and missing eyeballs and limbs etc. but not like storage but like some elaborate play room.
spooo-ky.

Ah RED! Inspiring article. I'm wearing this RED beauty (http://www.etsy.com/view_transaction.... ) that I purchased months ago from retrogirlgypsyarcade.etsy.com to the Pittsburgh Prom on Sat. That is, if I don't chicken out because I'm such a shy girl! No, I really am.

You can never go wrong with cats and I should know. I have 5 lovely Siamese cats.

The photos from St. Roch Cemetary are haunting, with the texture of the paint peeling on the walls, and the unusual objects.
Great picks too!

This craft+style is not me so much but I'm still in awe of Gothic & Gothic Revival architecture & design. Enhabiten's work always delights & her story sounds like something straight out of the Twilight Zone.

teenangster--you never cease to amaze us with your keen eye for the bizarre, the unique, the amazing, the inspired, and sometimes plain old goofy yet thrilling designs, and creations -- always my favorite way to spend time on thursdays!!!
and ohhhh that chapel is just fantastic--- and enhabiten-- i love hearing about your spooky adventure into the crawl space and up above the garage--- and this follows the pics from last week or the week before of grey gardens photos--- nothing like peeling paint, crumbling plaster, decaying relics and various other mysterious objects strewn about to get the senses tingling!!
and teenangster this one's for you--- the lingerie chandelier-- made me think of one of petah coyen's baroque chandelier--like sculptures made of cloth roses dipped in black wax... check her work out---it's fabulous!!
