Etsy Cares: Let's Give Some Craft Back to the Community
Article Header Image

We've buddied up with Housing Works this December to raise toys and financial assistance for people in need as as well as awareness about AIDS. We're asking for your help.

Housing Works is the largest grassroots AIDS service organization in the United States. They are also the nation's largest minority-controlled AIDS service organization.  They help provide shelter, advocacy, financial and legal assistance to those in need.  Their work with homeless and low-income families living with HIV/AIDS is remarkable and we want to help! Don't you?

What you can do:

Send in your new handmade (or new store bought) toys, gadgets and clothing for kids up to 16.  These should not be gift-wrapped.  If you are donating a store-bought toy, it should be in the store's packaging, according to Housing Works. Make sure your baby and toddler toys are safe (no removable parts, crystals etc.).  These toys will be donated to the children Housing Works assists.

Send before December 20th to:

Housing Works
c/o Etsy Donations
48-49 35th St
Long Island City, NY
11101

Or bring your toys to us at the Bust Craftacular or to Good Magazines Open House (more about this soon!) on December 8th or 9th.

What we're doing:

Etsy is donating $5 from every sale over $15 from the EtsyLabs shop for the entire month of December.   Stock up on your Etsy Merch this December. It's for a good cause!

Also, if you'd like to pledge a monetary donation to the cause, go here!

To learn more about Housing Works, or find a drop off location in the NYC area, check out their website.  We specifically picked a local organization because we can work with them on a human scale and they're open to the idea of handmade goods (many toy drives only accept "store-bought" packaged items). Thank you in advance to those of you who aren't NYC-based and take the time to mail in items. We know you're used to the ole postal system ;)  And thanks to Housing Works for loving handmade!

It's a great initiative! But next year - please start a month earlier. It is to late for me now, being in Europe...

I agree with strumpf! Every year I make soft dolls to be auctioned off for proceeds to go to UNICEF. I would be happy to do this for Etsy as well, but I need at least three weeks before the deadline in order to ensure that the items arrive in a timely fashion as I ship from France. Thanks for thinking of us! :-)
