We are very excited to say that we have joined forces with Craftster, Indiepublic, Craft Magazine, Interweave Press, Burdastyle, The Austin Craft Mafia, Design Sponge, and The American Craft Council, eight prominent forces in the DIY and handmade worlds, to collectively encourage people to buy handmade this holiday season.
Calling ourselves the Handmade Consortium, we have launched www.buyhandmade.org, a website where people take this simple pledge:
“I pledge to buy handmade this holiday season, and request that others do the same for me.”
We created the pledge to encourage us all to be conscious of how we spend our money this holiday season. Join the handmade consortium and pledge to support the independent. Pledge to know how and where products are produced. Pledge to find unique gifts. Pledge to buy handmade!
In the weeks ahead we will be documenting our personal pledges to buy handmade, sharing ideas on how you can help encourage others to do the same, and keeping you all in the loop with updates on the project.

This is an awesome idea! But, umm, i hate to nitpick, but burdastyle is misspelled up there, and so is the link. :)

It does link back to Etsy from our co-sponsorship logo. And it will link back from all the Etsians signatures!

Wonderful news and marvelous concept! Thank you :)
Considering that Etsy is really the only one of the project sponsors where handmade good can be bought directly, I was wondering whether it would be possible to add "Buy Handmade Goods!" next to the Etsy button on the buyhandmade.org site -- for those who are still unfamiliar with what "Etsy" is... The phrase shows up when you point the cursor to the button but it may be more effective if "Buy Handmade Goods" would be right next to the button, too. What do you think? :)

Thanks for getting this information up for us, Matt! I've signed the pledge and added the badge to my blog for others.

I took the pledge, and asked my blog readers to do the same. LIVE ARTFULLY! BUY HANDMADE!

How bizarre. I don't see a co-sponsorship logo or an Etsy button. Must be something with my computer, I guess.

nancy, all the sponsor logos are in the right hand column of the buyhandmade of the site - they're all clickable. have you scrolled down there?

I also took the pledge and I encourage everyone else to do the same!

I signed the pledge, too, and posted it to both my IndiePublic profile and my blog.
Are you going to add more of your own philosophy to the page, though? I think the links are informative and a good source for information, but I am missing your own points and thoughts up there, besides the rhetorics ("why buy handmade", first paragraph).

I took the pledge! I've also posted it on my blog, hopefully we'll get more people to sign it and stick to it. ;)

I took the pledge and signed it 2 days ago but it still does not show up. I also emailed the link to everyone I know and others took the pledge but none of them show up. Is this going to be fixed?
I think this is great, I also sent the link to our local newspaper and I am going to write a letter to the editor with the link encouraging ppl to take the pledge.

Under the button to "Submit" the pledge, I see the title "The Handmade Consortium" and then a square blank area, and then the "About" link. Maybe the sponsorhip logos and links are supposed to appear in that blank area? If everyone else is seeing them, then it surely is just some odd setting on my computer.

I took the handmade pledge! I am new to typepad (and etsy) Can someone tell me how to put the button on my blog?

I took the handmade pledge! I have to find where I am on the list so I can boast.

I hope I didn't break any rules but I printed out the I took the pledge "badge" and made it into a pin to wear to the craft show I did last weekend. I also made a sign up sheet for people to sign in my booth explaining about buyhandmade.org. This was a litle old ladies group and most were clueless but they were willing to sign and wear the badges.
So, did I break any rules?? I gave them a card with the link to sign up for real with their badge. I just thought it would be a fun way to get the word out. There was even another Etsy seller there who doesn't come to the forum that had no idea what the Storque or the buy handmade pledge was all about.
Can I continue to do this at my other craft shows and around town?
wondercabinet
hey! no rules broken. spread the word! there are also now some things to download at http://team.etsy.com/teamsbuyhandmade... , and there will be more in the coming days.

Fantastic! Just saved the postcards to print out a bunch and the little tags too. Just in time too. Thanks so much, I will put them to good use.
