Introducing a New Series: Handmade Weddings
Article Header Image

We’d had this Handmade Wedding series planned for a while, I swear. And then, lucky for me, I got engaged. I'm not such a bridezilla as to monopolize the Storque for my personal use, but I must say, I will be taking this Storque series very, very seriously!  We are going to bring you useful info on how to bring handmade elements to your wedding, whether it’s by sharing ideas for making things or by highlighting some great handmade and vintage items on Etsy. We hope to show you some of the latest and freshest ideas for weddings.  Etsians, after all, are a direct source of raw creativity!

We’ve just relaunched Alchemy, a service which allows buyers to request custom orders. Interested sellers bid on the job, allowing you to match yourself with the perfect artist for your needs. Theoretically, you could get just about anything made. In this series, we’ll be exploring how custom orders can come into play for weddings. Seems to me that weddings are very special occasions where folks want to express something of themselves to their family and friends; custom orders give both the artist and the newly-weds-to-be a chance to bring their visions to the table. And more pragmatically, there’s a lot for buyers to learn before jumping into getting a ring made, a gown modified, or invitations produced, so we’ll be sharing tips from people who’ve gone through the process!

The series will pull together a collection of real stories from people who’ve recently had weddings, as well as guest bloggers from likes of design*sponge to Cupcake blog (see full list here), and also useful posts from sellers who specialize in making incredible pieces for weddings.  There’ll be tons of tips and highlights of unique handmade lovey dovey goodness. Keep your eye on the related items at the bottom of each post, because we’ll be pointing out some great stuff.

Topics we’ll cover:
Concepting & Planning
Registry alternatives & gifts
Invitations
Rings & jewelry
Gowns & Bridesmaid dresses
Food
Hair accessories & veils
Grooms' items
Décor and centerpieces
Flowers
Eco-friendly ideas
Bachelorette
Gifts & Favors
Albums & Guestbooks

What comes to my mind when I think about the Wedding Biz? Stressing over tons of details for buying expensive junk that I simply don’t need and that my guests aren’t going to remember! But weddings don’t have to be out of the box. Your wedding doesn’t have to be what the wedding industry tells you it should be and it doesn’t have to be super expensive either. True, I can’t deny it, planning a wedding is a huge production, but you can make things yourself or put your dollars straight into artists’ hands and have a whole lot more of a personal experience.

If you're engaged or recently hitched, give a shout-out in the comments below!

And lastly, for those of you who don’t believe in marriage or aren’t about to get married…I can hear your groans already and I apologize in advance! The Storque will have other content for your enjoyment and we won’t jam the oh-look-at-me-I'm-a-bride stuff down your throats! But seriously, you appreciate handmade goods (I know you do, otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this), and you know someone who is getting married (don’t we all, really?), so think of this as research for your friend or family member — they’ll thank you for it!

I got married in June 2006, and I made a bunch of stuff myself, and bought some things through Alchemy (v.1!). We did things on our own terms, and I must say, I can't think of anything I'd do differently now!

Thanks for featuring my hairvine, Vanessa!

Let me know if you need someone to write about headpieces/tiaras and customizing, I'd be more than happy to help. :)

(I'm actually getting married in less than two months, and I got my favors from Etsy!)

Planning a wedding is fun and crazy! I so enjoyed planning my 2005 wedding with my Mom and we made so much of our elements ourselves - she did my favors and I made my crystal bouquets (I offer a similar bouquet package in my shop now) and printed my programs, tags, maps, and so many other things myself.

I wish I had known about Etsy back then!

I'm looking forward to seeing all of the creative ideas in the series.

Wow, that hairvine is incredible! I've been trying to pull off the "birdcage" veil thing for my April 6th wedding but it just isn't happening! I can't get it to look any better than the mesh bag that onions come in! Perhaps a hairvine is more my style!

I must say--I much more enjoy working on my client's weddings (I'm an invite designer) than my own!

I'm peeing my pants because I'm so happy about all of the wedding related excitement on etsy lately! My fiancee and I have already purchased a custom cake topper, our favors, and a pearl hair comb for our June 08 wedding. I've been searching for good groomsmen gifts too.

As a graphic designer I designed my own invitations and enjoyed it so much that I'm considering offering custom invitations for others on etsy.

I'm really looking forward to seeing more wedding specific items from sellers! I'm also hoping that all of the wedding related posts and articles aren't geared only toward brides, some grooms actually care about their weddings too!

Congrats Vanessa, my wedding was one of the best times of my life. Enjoy every minute of it, and just relax. Remember that it really doesn't matter if the cake isn't the right shade of ivory, and you can revel in the beauty of the experience.
Cheers!!

I know "The Knot" isn't super DIY, but I got married about 2 years ago. We had a pretty unique and super DIY wedding. I posted a lot of my ideas in my Knot profile. It's still kicking around I think...

What a great series... luckily for me with six weeks remaining until my wedding on the beach, I get to follow this series!

I have to add we're having a very etsy wedding, our invites, some favours, possibly my wedding band (could I leave it any later?) and so much more.

YAYA Etsy! Great series!

I'm so excited about this series! I'm not engaged quite yet, but have a honey who's been itching to ask and it's never too early to start laying things out for the big day. I'll be needing a lot of creative inspiration starting now! (We'll be getting married in the middle of my dad's cornfield in upstate NY with a reception in the barn and around the pond...how romantic!)

And of course I can't get away with not mentioning that I sell custom vintage style wedding cake toppers in my shop and am always happy to take new orders from that blushing bride (or groom) to be! :)
