Survey Says: Getting to Know You & Getting the Word Out
Article Header Image

We are launching our annual Etsy Survey today. Take it! Click here.

We are very excited! Our goal is to get a better understanding of our community and what is important to buyers and sellers. We have developed this survey over the last few months and have also incorporated community suggestions from the forum thread asking for your ideas. As we mentioned in the article asking for input, we could not incorporate all the suggestions, but loved the ones you took the time to share and were able to use many of them. Your feedback is important to us, so please take the time to take the survey and encourage your buyers, friends and other community members to take the survey as well.

We are anxious to analyze the results. What we learn will inform key decisions across Etsy, including site development, where we advertise, and content creation. We also plan to announce the relevant results to the community — something many sellers have been asking for. Survey-takers can rest assured that their personal information and responses won't be made public. Results will only be shared in aggregate.

For an added incentive, we will be awarding a $100 shopping spree on Etsy to five lucky people who fill out the survey. What a great way to start the year: a few great Etsy items on us! Due to some very frustrating laws, we cannot extend the sweepstakes to our community members outside the US, but please don’t let this deter you. We want to serve you as best we can — and we want your voice to be heard.

Sellers, we need your help!

We want to get the word out about the survey and make sure as many buyers take the survey as possible. It is particularly important to reach out to buyers, as they are less likely to discuss their opinions in the forums and we generally know less about them. We will be sharing our findings with the community — so the more people filling out the survey, the better for everyone.

We are reaching out to all our sellers to help promote the survey. Some ways you can do this is in your communities and also directly to your buyers:
  • Emails to buyers – why not add a link to the survey (as suggested by a number of community members)
  • Put a link to the survey on your team or group page
  • Blog about the survey or better yet add one of these badges below to your blog

Copy and Paste This Code:

<a href="http://survey.etsy.com/"><img src="http://www.etsy.com/storque/media/article_images/survey_sidebar_pencil_lesscolorful.jpg"></a>

Copy and Paste This Code:

<a href="http://survey.etsy.com/"><img src="http://www.etsy.com/storque/media/article_images/survey_sidebar_pencil_border.jpg"></a>

Copy and Paste This Code:

<a href="http://survey.etsy.com/"><img src="http://www.etsy.com/storque/media/article_images/survey_little.jpg"></a>

We are doing lots on our end to promote the survey — but every bit of help counts. Our results will be more accurate and more informative with more participation.

You know you want to...take it! Click here.

Thank you in advance and comment below with your ideas for ways to spread the word!

"Blog about the survey or better yet add this badge (link to badge) to your blog"

Should there be a link there?

Can't wait to see the results of this survey!

LoucheLab says:

Cool survey! I just took it, it was fun.

Sorry, but there's no way I'm going to e-mail buyers about it, I think it's even considered spam by the etsy do and don'ts...

Seriously, if someone I would buy from would ask me to take a survey, or anything really that's past just paying for item and wait for package, I would probably either cancel my perches or not buy from them again.

boygirlparty says:

i tried to take the survey and got the error 'you must answer all the questions'...but, um, i did answer all the questions.

Etsy Admin Vanessa says:

I don't think it's too spammy! You're not forcing them to take it, just letting them know about it.

Alternatively, you could just put the link in the footer of your email. That's a bit more subtle.

I think it's important to reach out to buyers. We want to know how to better serve them on Etsy.

hobocampcrafts says:

Me TOO! I am having same problem boygirlparty is having.. any idea why? I've tried like 10 times and I know I am answering all the questions :)

Etsy Admin bethela says:

We are having trouble replicating the problem (in order to trouble shoot). Go to the bugs forum - list what operating system and a description of your problem and hopefully we can get to the bottom of this.

eneefabricdesign says:

thank you for the survey, but it is too broad and covers too much territory. Pls make the next survey just about paid ads (showcases) vs GG's and other free ads, and please send as a dedicated email ONLY to sellers.
Your survey results are going to be a mixed bag, but thanks for the effort!

1/2/08 at 8:01p.m.
eneefabricdesign says:

Pls, use good biz sense: if you want to Survey buyers, then add it as an OPTION when the buyer PLACES THEIR ORDER. THAT is exactly when you want the info from the buyer. Asking sellers to send the survey to our buyers is both tacky and bad bad bad business. oooooooooh, wrong message entirely!

ValerieTyler says:

I've blogged the survey link. :)

Etsy Admin stellaloella says:

Ah, instead of "emails to buyers" being a spammy type of email (side note: we here at Etsy hate spam and would not encourage you to send unsolicited promo emails to anyone), what about this:

Include a short note and a link to the survey in the "Message to Buyer" that goes out on every transaction invoice from your shop? You can change this under Your Etsy > Shop Appearance.

DarlingBri says:

FYI, I just took the survey but at no point did it ask me for my contact details. I was not signed in at the time because I followed a link from someone's blog - I just signed in to add this comment.

How exactly are you planning to "randomly reward five lucky survey takers with $100 Etsy shopping sprees" if you're not tracking who the survey takers are?

1/2/08 at 9:19p.m.
ljdesignphoto says:

Great idea a survey. I do think it was a little general. Maybe you should have one for sellers and one for buyers. I would take both. You can still ask if they do both.

1/2/08 at 9:41p.m.
Etsy Admin bethela says:

At the end of the survey - there is a place to enter your email address. This is how we will be able to notify the winners. These email addresses will only be used for the sweepstakes, we will not attach them to specific answers in any way.

ColibriDreams says:

I didn't find the place where to put my e-mail in the end of the survey. Did I really understand correctly - only the US citizens/residents can win? That's not fair!

1/2/08 at 11:49p.m.
jellibat says:

i didn't see any place to enter a email address either , do non US resident automatically not get that box because we can't go in the draw anyway ?

1/3/08 at 12:03a.m.
skunksley says:

i agree with ColibriDreams, the "only US residents can win" rule is poopy.

1/3/08 at 12:04a.m.
GoTo says:

The "only US residents can win" thing isn't that it's special just for us, it's got to do with the wide array of laws that running a contest internationally would entail.

It does rot, I'm sorry you can't have a chance to win, but it's not because they actively want to exclude international folks.

1/3/08 at 12:29a.m.
OpulentOddities says:

No problems on the survey for me.

Posted it on the indiepublic Land of Etsy forum, too.

alkemystic88 says:

Everytime you all ask what you can do to improve the site all I can say is keep doing what you have been everything is working pretty smooth.

ColleenBaran says:

I took the survey but neglected to mention one of my top 'new feature wishes'. I would really, really appreciate two separate pages for bio and 'shipping/terms/etc'.

Since I'm in Canada my shipping info needs to be explained and it ends up being a bit long combined with bio and the like.

1/3/08 at 4:54a.m.
rose218 says:

i do understand why only US residents are entitled to win; it's just a little frustrating.

but i did take the survey in hopes that the site will accommodate international buyers.

thymbyldesigns says:

"Results will only be shared in aggregate."

Non-native-speaker question: what does this mean? You're sharing this info with selected partners? Who are these partners? I'd like to know before I disclose my income, marital status and other very personal information with Etsy.

1/3/08 at 5:23a.m.
lupin says:

I would happily take the survey if I could choose which questions I answered! It gives me an option to keep my gender quiet but not things like my income?? I would love to answer questions about how I found and use Etsy but without answering *all* the questions I cannot do this.

1/3/08 at 5:27a.m.
interrobang says:

Please be aware that the results of your "Other Stores" question will be very skewed. All the stores listed, except for Target, are US-only stores. I assume you're using the question to make assumptions about the target market of this website, but as there was no "N/A" option.. the results will make it seem as if a lot of people *choose* not to shop at these places at all.

1/3/08 at 7:12a.m.
spidercamp says:

"Results will only be shared in aggregate" means that etsy will use the survey results to make broad conclusions (or public statements) about their users, NOT anything specific to one buyer.

This means you are safe disclosing your age, income, etc., because it is only being asked so that etsy can figure out the AVERAGE info of its users.

It's "the survey revealed that our customers tend to be 24 years old and make $140,000"

- rather than "we found out thymbyldesigns is 12 and married six times!"

It's just basic privacy protection.

1/3/08 at 7:37a.m.
papapots says:

I took it, but there are a few mistakes on the form. Such as, it has 2 checkboxes for "Candles" (I think it was on the "What do you buy on Etsy question"). There was another one before that but I don't remember specifically what it was. I think it had Etsy listed an option, but the question said something like "Where do you buy handmade goods other than Etsy.com?" Didn't make sense.

1/3/08 at 8:08a.m.
thymbyldesigns says:

Thank you spidercamp!
(I think it rang a bell with me, because there is a line of demographics sharing and business partners in the privacy policy)

Good point, interrobang. I wanted to scratch "N/A" into my screen at that point. I was missing a few more N/A's and "prefer not to disclose"'s throughout the survey. This would make results more accurate, rather than forcing people to fake answers in order to get around the disclosure.

marikio says:

I have been trying to take the survey, but when I get to the bottom of the first page I am told I must answer all questions (which I have) and it won't let me go any further. What's up?

1/3/08 at 9:34a.m.
alphabettispaghetti says:

How can you answer all the questions when one of them is: What country do you reside in? Answer: Italy... Oh wait, Italy's not on the list. I couldn't get beyond the first page. Half-cocked idea??? Never!!!

1/3/08 at 9:58a.m.
Marmalady says:

i have filled in the survey but think it a shame the prize draw being attached to it could attract more USA answers and so skew the results

operatic says:

I love Etsy and I want it to succeed, but there are many problems with this survey and the way it's been implemented. The biggest problem is that because of lack of planning or professional consultation or whatever, anyone can take the survey multiple times. Doesn't that automatically make it a waste of time?

1/3/08 at 10:37a.m.
alphabettispaghetti says:

... And how could you miss Italy off your list??? Hardly an obscure country, eh?

Thanks for letting us speak our voice.

haha miraartz I laughed at that too!

Also, I forgot to mention that as a promotional item seller, I really am hoping for a "For Your Business" category for items such as mine. I feel like they're trash when I put them in the "Everything Else" category!

dudes, the survey isn't working for me. maybe there is a bug with safari? i filled out all the answers and when i try to advance to the next page it says, "please answer all the questions." but i totally did.

saramayo says:

I took the survey, but I was very unimpressed at the quality of the survey. It was not professional at all, lots of typos, bugs, confusing questions, etc. One page 2 it asked if I was a full time or part time artisan - I am neither , just a buyer, but there was no choice I had to chose part-time to continue the survey!

The bad design of this survey mean the results will not be very useful.

1/3/08 at 1:23p.m.
BuenoStyle says:

I live in canada, so am not eligible for the prize - that's fine - I understand there are red tape rules regarding prize giving. However, I'm happy to take the survey without any prize.

If I take the survey, will my answers be discounted because I do not fall within the contest rules?

Would love an answer to this before I commit to do the survey...just don't want to waste my time & effort.

1/3/08 at 1:44p.m.
Redbecca says:

I can't take the survey. It keeps telling me to answer all the questions even though I did, so I can't get past the first page. It's a bummer.

1/3/08 at 2:13p.m.
Etsy Admin stellaloella says:

Non-US users can (and should, please!) take the survey. You just won't be able to enter the sweepstakes portion (sorry).

For those who are getting the error that says you didn't answer all the questions, try using a different web browser to take the survey. We've had reports from some Mac users that Safari is not compatible with the survey. It works great with Firefox though. (Sorry for the inconvenience.)

I am so glad to be able to give my input! Sometimes no matter how many forums, comments, and active member use on etsy-- it can be tough to get the message right to the creators- thanks so much for the chance to do this..oh and 100 shopping spree? that would be divine!

1/3/08 at 2:57p.m.
ambitionsdesign says:

I adore Etsy and cannot imagine my life without it! The survery was a nice surprise. I was so happy to have a place to put my 2 cents in for suggestions.

1/3/08 at 3:31p.m.
Timeless says:

40% of Etsy users are non-Americans. Why have a sweepstake if that means you exclude 40% of the people who make you money?

It is not that I can't understand that under US law Etsy can't award prize money to those outside the US, it's that I can't understand why Etsy would want to exclude so many people!

This is the 2nd time in a few months you're doing this, and it will be the 2nd us non-US sellers/buyers will feel excluded. Why would you want to make us feel that way?

1/3/08 at 7:36p.m.
sevenbridges says:

I'm curious if Etsy has professional marketing folks working within Etsy/consulting, or if the Etsy staff is just making this all up on the fly? Surveys can be incredibly powerful tools, hopefully this yields some useful data (aside from "Hey guess what, lots of people want an Advanced Search, we never would have known that"...)

1/3/08 at 7:53p.m.
electrikolor says:

It would be great to have some information as to how long this survey will be available and when you expect to share the results. Will this survey be available for a week, a month, a year? Also, the household income structure was definitely skewed for upper-income levels rather than realistically for what I believe to represent most of the sellers and buyers here...
