Tech Update: Etsy DNS issues
Article Header Image

This is an update for everyone having trouble connecting to Etsy right now.

What happened?

This past Thursday we moved Etsy's DNS servers to our new datacenter. This is an important step in making sure the site can grow and scale.

This DNS move caused a ripple in some people's access to Etsy.com. By our estimates, 0.01% of traffic to Etsy is not resolving correctly. Still, we understand that for those affected, this is very disruptive.  We wish there were an immediate resolution, but we don’t think it’s that’s simple.

Whenever a DNS change occurs, it needs to propagate through various ISPs around the entire world. This can take several days. In this particular case, a lookup error occurred, and this error was cached in many different places: an ISP's own DNS servers, your local router, and even on your computer itself.

What can we do?
Right now we're waiting for all the caches to clear out the error message. Until this happens, some people will be unable to reach Etsy.

There is a quick fix for this: you can change the DNS servers you use.

There are guides on the Web on how to do this, but please understand that this is something that Etsy cannot do for you (though we’re happy to answer your questions if you’d like to send them to support@etsy.com).

We've spent time investigating every nook and cranny, and this is where we're at right now. If we uncover anything else that can be helpful, we'll make sure to let you know.

We are closing comments on this post now, so we can gather all your questions and comments in this forum thread.

It would have been nice if you could have provided a link for reliable information on how to change the DNS. I am not computer savvy when it comes to changing important manual settings and IP addresses and things like that...I was really worried about changing these things to get back onto Etsy since you guys essentially told us 'This is what you have to do but don't hold us responsible for what happens if you do it!' then just said 'look up how to do it yourself'.

Not helpful :( Etsy was utterly unreachable by me for four days! And I think the number of people affected is a lot higher than .01%

Good thing I decided to take a chance and change the settings even though Etsy made it sound so dangerous to do so. Finally I can respond to convos and not have people think I'm just being irresponsible and ignoring them!

Had a flicker of trouble here, but all is good now...
Have had problems in the past with other companies, and it took up to 3 weeks... so days waiting is not bad at all...
Thanks...

Data Name Server... it's basically what your computer reads to find each internet site.

if there's an issue with the communication between servers (the internet is one big pile of servers talking to each other) it won't be able to bring up the site on your computer.

To reset a DNS you'll have to call your internet service provider and request they reset this... they'll know what you're talking about when you mention DNS. hope this helps :D

sorry for the double post... clearing out your browsers cache, history and cookies could also help.

this info is under your tools or preferences (depending if you're using IE, Firefox or Sarfari) then restarting your computer to allow the new setting to take effect can help in some situations.

I find it hard to believe that only 0.01% of us couldn't access.

Oh, no wonder I can access every other site except Etsy! Thankfully we can buy pre-paid internet cards for dial up here, as that is what I'm using at the moment to access Etsy.

Hope it gets fixed soon! :(

Hello,

I’m very happy, I think I solved the problem for the moment!!!!

I couldn’t see anything in etsy, always the same answer, “ww.etsy.com doesn’t exist”.

Steps I made:

1.- Look for the file “hosts” in windows:
Open the file in a plain text editor such as Notepad:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

2.- The file looks like the one below.

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

3.- At the end of the file (in this case, under the localhost entry), you have to write all the etsy IP (I found this etsy IPs, maybe there miss someone):

4.- That’s all. Enjoy etsy as the first day.

NOTE: I can’t entry directly to addresses like: www.etsysellername.etsy.com.
