Tech Update: Search within Categories and Subcategories!
Article Header Image

Have you every gone into a Category or subcategory on Etsy, and wanted to search within your results? Now you can!

When you are in a Category — such as Jewelry — you will see the subcategories listed in blue.

You can now search within Categories and Subcategories by simply typing more tags in the search bar. It's a great way to narrow down your results.

You can also use NOT to eliminate words with this feature.

Here's an example where we searched for silver within the Subcategory pendant, in the jewelry Category.

Have fun shopping!

I'm confused. I just tried this and it didn't work for me. I searched for "bead" from the Glass category and it brought up items from the jewelry category, and the supplies category (including commercial supplies).

It does not appear to me to be any different than it was before. It still pulled up items that just happened to have all the terms you searched for, not ones that were only in that category.

My favourite difficult search: In the Vintage category, search for Jewelry, then go to the Jewelry category and search for Vintage. You get PRECISELY the same number of results, yet the item you are searching for is different. (I.E. I wanted authentic vintage jewelry, not handmade jewelry that has a vintage look.)

Ditto what liskidder said!

I went to category on the side bar:

selected glass,
selected bead,
selected lampwork,

AND results are the same as always??
Results still show items like jewelry...

Not sure what has changed?

Admin, more details, please?

Thank you,
Sabine

Hey guys! Ok, questions!

liskidder & BluewaterStudio- it is not working differently as far as the category and subcategories. They are the same. What is different is that now you can type in a word and search within those results.

So, if I go to Glass > bead > lampwork, now I can narrow it down further with the search bar by typing, say:

red handmade

Now I get results for glass, bead, lampwork, red, handmade.

dejavu- yes, actual vintage is hard to find. The only way to find this at this time is to add the word commercial to your search.

yaaay! this is such a great improvement. thanks!

But if it were ACTUALLY searching within a category, vintage wouldn't be hard to find. I could just go to that category and search within it.

If there is a difference, it is so minute as to be imperceptible. As in, it makes very little difference in the results.

But HeyMichelle, when you go to Glass > bead > lampwork and search for "red, handmade", you get results from the JEWELRY category... so you're not actually narrowing your search results within the Glass category.

HeyMichelle, Thank you for checking back in! :):)

Ok... I think I am still not sure about this, because, when I "look" for my niche, which is "handmade glass lampwork bead supply" I have two choices:

1. If I go to category (LH side), pick glass, bead, lampwork (no other category to pick at this point) the results still show jewelry (they are tagged correctly because the jewelry has lampwork beads in it)

2. If I go to category (LH side), pick supplies, handmade, bead (no other category to pick at this point) the results show all sorts of "things" that are not a bead (but, they are not really mis-tagged because they are used for beading)

I am having a heck of a time deciding how to categorize myself. I think I am too used to typical category structures - where jewelry stays in jewelry or a bead stays in supplies... trying to get the hang of the "tag" idea.

Any advice or more info you have is greatly appreciated!!! :):) TY!! Sabine

I don't really see how this is different than before? I've always done this, only I added my tags next to the subtags that were automatically placed in the search bar. The mechanism of it is different, with the pull down menus, but it doesn't seem new?

Am I missing something here?

I would love to be able to truly search within categories. But it doesn't appear to be working. When I go to supplies, then try to narrow it down with "bead", I still end up with listings that are in the Jewelry category. (And glass category too.) Bummer. I'd really like to be able to weed out those suppliers that are putting their supplies in the jewelry category, but I guess I can't. (yet)

"So, if I go to Glass > bead > lampwork, now I can narrow it down further with the search bar by typing, say:

Now I get results for glass, bead, lampwork, red, handmade."

you would get the same results if you did a simple tag search for "glass bead lampwork red handmade" and the order of the tags is irrelevant. hate to go bursting bubbles but this is quite misleading.

Etsy Admin HeyMichelle says:

Hey you guys! this was just a tiny little change to make it so that shoppers could do something that they expected they should be able to do- type in the search bar while they are in the category system, and have it "keep" the previous "string", as it were. Before this, if you used the search bar when you were in categories, the category words were lost. Small thing- we probably shouldn'ta reported it, since most people probably wouldn't notice a difference, they would assume this was always like this. But this was something that people had brought up on the forums, so we thought we'd pass on the news.

SupplySmith says:

Maybe you can add an instruction box underneath the list of category choices on the left? Indicate that you CAN search further and HOW- similar to the text box of search tips that show up when you directly type words into the search box.
