News from the Etsy Labs: 8/4 Craft Night

Have plans on Monday night? Well, you do now! Dust off your crafty pants and come join us for our weekly Craft Night at the Etsy Labs in Brooklyn. Each craft night is also broadcast live in the Treehouse room of the Virtual Labs. All demos will be shown both in the Labs in Brooklyn and in the Treehouse online.

For our Monday, August 4 craft night, Dari, aka papismami, will be teaching us how to blockprint using fruit and vegetables. We will create stationary, wrapping paper, envelopes, and other decorated paper goods using the simple method of printing with vegetables. You may wish to bring your own potato (or yam, pepper, onion, apple) with which to print, paper to print upon, and, if you happen to have a set, some lino or woodcarving tools. Bringing these supplies is totally optional, as all tools and supplies will be provided by the Labs.

Be sure to download the photo tutorial handout that accompanies this craft night. (See the bottom of this article.)

Craft Night occurs every Monday from 4-8pm at 325 Gold Street, 3rd floor in Brooklyn, New York. Each week the Etsy Labs organize a skill-sharing project. We provide supplies, tools, snacks, and know-how. Participants are also welcome to bring their own project to work on independently. Craft night is a time to make things, learn new skills, and hang out.

Are you joining us virtually for Craft Night this week? If so, and you would like to craft along with us, you'll need a few supplies:

  • a bunch of potatoes, peppers, onions, various leaves, apples, etc.
  • a knife that is sharp enough to cut the vegetables. (Children will need adults to do their cutting.)
  • pen/pencil
  • paper
  • newspaper (for under workspace)
  • water based inks
  • surface for rolling inks
  • surface for cutting (cutting board)
  • brayers/rollers
  • wooden spoons
  • plain or colored papers, envelopes, craft paper, plain colored wrapping paper, and any other paper goods

Craft Night Study Tips:

1. Download this two-page (Page One and Page Two) handout created by papismami. If you aren't able to attend the Virtual Labs broadcast of this craft night, this tutorial is just the thing for you!

2. Get extra tips by watching this fabulous video with Lotta Jansdotter about printing with yams and stencilling.

See you Monday!
