July's live How-To Month was a smashing success! While we had some Etsy royalty here at the labs we took the opportunity to make videos with them. In this second video, the lovely Nguyen Le, aka Knitknit teaches how to make knitted post cards. If you are teaching yourself how to knit, you will love this video. This is also a great way to use your knitted test swatches to make a special something to send to someone!

What a great way to use up the extra yarn I have laying around. Great idea. Thanks for sharing.

I'm a huge post card collector and a member of postcrossing. I'm going to have to make a few of these to send out :D Thanks for the tutorial!!

Hahaha what an awesome idea! I love knitting! I'm knitting my first jumper at the moment though so must try not to get distracted with postcode making!

i love the idea of a knitted postcard! i'm always looking for things to make that are small and can use up all those extra little balls of yarn from other projects. so cute!

They're pretty, but I don't their their able to be mailed on their own. The post office has strict requirements about what can be mailed as a post card.

The USPS pretty much requires there to be something you can stick a stamp to to mail it. I had some friends who had a contest to see what the weirdest thing they could mail was and actually have it delivered. The winner was a latex glove filled with jellybeans - but it still required a tag with clear address directions and postage.

Doesn't the post office have to cancel the postage with a stamp? How do they do that on yarn?

If you watch the entire video you'll see the swatch is attached to a heavy card. This is where the address and postage goes. We've mailed a few of these and they've arrived safely so try it out!
P.S. That's hilarious magickalrealism!

I think the word postcard here is referring to the general size/shape and orientation of what we consider a postcard, not the actual USPS mailing rate, which would be $.27 instead of the average dollar rate quoted in the video.
You can mail almost anything (including hula hoops), so I don't see why these would pose a particular problem. They may arrive quite dirtier than they left though. ;) My guess is that they would cost anywhere between $.75 and 1.34 to mail (first class, domestic postage in the US) and non-machinable surcharges may apply.
Anyway, this was a very creative knitting tutorial video. I like the idea too! Thanks guys.

According to my husband who works in mailing manager for a large industrial printer, it would cost a couple of bucks to mail that post card. It would be considered a parcel, non-machinable.
But you could mail it.

tangerined, you've got it - this project referred to as a postcard for the size & shape - not the postage. I sent one of these a few months ago and it cost about 80 cents. It arrived safely in one piece. ;)
magickalrealism - that is too funny! I had a teacher in high school who mailed a banana in a plastic bag because he wanted to prove to his brother that the postal service will mail just about anything. He slapped the postage right on the bag, and it arrived!

I have always wanted to learn to knit, but I'm left-handed and my family is all right-handed. For some reason I couldn't wrap my brain around it, but your video is AWESOME! I can't wait to get paid and go buy yarn and needles so I can try this out! :) SO EXCITED! THANKS!

Learned how to knit from this great video and just made one for my sister! :) I'm also going to embroider a little saying on it since you can't see the back anyways :) This video is amazing!

Knitknit, I've made about 3 of these now and they all arrived safe and sound. I put a $1 stamp on each. I love it!
