Album Review: Heart Comma Heart
Article Header Image

Emily Easterly of Smuttons is not only the mastermind behind the cheeky button business, but also a multi-talented singer/songwriter and musician.  She has been working hard over the past year on her fourth album entitled Heart Comma Heart, and we at Etsy were lucky enough to snag a copy for review before its release this Saturday!

Heart Comma Heart is a 12 track album with 41 minutes of diverse tunes that keep you interested and wanting more (kind of like a titty pack). It displays evident influences from Emily’s musical history, the most apparent being Neil Young and The Beatles.  You won’t be able to get cleverly melodic tunes like “Shotgun Wedding” and “Shadows” out of your head.

Emily gives a brief peek at her more serious side with haunting ballads like “Heart, Heart” and “Maryland to Texas.”  She comes across as a risk taker, not only with the scandalous nature of her Smuttons here on Etsy, but also due in part to her systematic refrain from including any bass guitar on the entire record.  Her efforts definitely pay off in the eclectic sound that is Heart Comma Heart, with traces of piano, percussion, banjo, Rhodes and whistles each making an appearance, alongside Emily’s mainstay of electric guitar and drums.

Emily's sound is frequently referred to as "what a redhead should sound like;" redhead or not, this is without question a sound worth hearing.

Watch Emily’s newly released video for "Shadows" below.

If you’re in the NYC area this Saturday, December the 15th at 9pm, do check out Emily at her CD release party at Crash Mansion, located at 199 Bowery, NYC.  She will have loads of Smuttons with her and says you’ll get your own free smut pack if you say the magic word (Smuttons) when buying your copy of the CD.

Can’t make it to the show?  Listen to, download, and/or buy a few of the tracks on Heart Comma Heart and more of Emily's albums here!
