Etsy Finds: MermaidClaire's Coney Island Finds

When I was a little girl I watched a documentary on PBS about Coney Island, and it has been an obsession ever since. In fact, Coney Island is one of the reasons I moved to New York two years ago! The place once known as "America's Playground" is steeped in history and has proved a source of inspiration to many. Here are a few of my Coney Island inspired picks.

Coney Island Parachute Jump, screenprinted microfiber necktie

This dandy bit of haberdashery is sure to delight the nostalgically inclined. Toybreaker provides an excellent history lesson in the listing description! $30.

A Hot Dog/Bun Disagreement

If I tried to eat Nathan's Famous hot dogs like competitive eating champions Joey Chestnut, Takeru Kobayashi, and Sonya Thomas, the disagreement in my stomach wouldn't look this civilized! By mattson, $195.

The Amazon Woman and the Pygmy Pigman

Not for the faint of heart, the Sideshows by the Seashore keep the freak show vibe alive! Not sure if these two make an appearance, but I'll keep an eye out. By luckx4, $30.

Baseball Furies Rabbit Magnet Set

"Warriors! Come out and plaaaaaaaaayeeeeeayyyy!" The Warriors is probably the best Coney Island movie of all time. Did you know that Coney Island takes its name from the Dutch "Konijn Eiland," which means "Rabbit Island"? Here are some of the island's namesakes dressed as rival gang the Furies. CAN YOU DIG IT!? By sjane, $7.

Goodnight, friend

A tragic moment in Coney Island's history is the story of Topsy the Elephant. Topsy was sentenced to death by electrocution for killing the abusive trainer who fed her a lit cigarette. Thomas Edison filmed the execution, and the chilling footage has always lingered in my memory. This sweet baby rests peacefully in the way Topsy never had the chance to. By sarahjanestudios, $24.

Great article - I have a soft spot in my heart for fairs and amusements. The story of Topsy breaks my heart, but Sara Jane's sweet elephant illustration is a delight.

I love your picks! I always drive by, but don't stop at Coney Island when I visit my parents. Next time I will be sure to visit there.

Yaaay Coney Island!
Great collection Claire! Poor Topsy. You should check out the silent film "It" with Clara Bow. Wonderful footage of 1920's Luna Park!!!

I've been obsessed with that PBS documentary for years, too! Great spotlight for one of the greatest places on earth.
