Hey ladies!

Did you know a lot of commercially available tampons and pads have bleach and rayon in them?  It's debatable whether this poses a significant medical risk, but it's important to be informed and make your own decision.

The fact that cloth pads are more Earth friendly isn't debatable.  They are washable, not disposable, so they won't fill up our landfills! I just found out from Wikipedia that premodern women would have menstruated little, because they were generally pregnant or breast-feeding most of their fertile lives...so this whole phenomenon is kinda new! Take a look at some of the cute and environmentally-friendly feminine products from NaturallyHip and others available on Etsy!

Update:  A commentor just sent a link to an excellent site to check out: Good4girls.org. This organization takes donations of cloth feminine products to give to girls who need them in Africa. Check it out!

I get mine from Modest Maiden, she's local (and on Etsy) and delivers to my office (very privately!)

Wow! What and interesting article! So glad to know this. I will look into these shops and see what they have to offer. I would love to know more about women's experiences with using handmade pads. I would love to read some testimonials. Thanks for the article.

Interesting timing -- I heard about this concept about 3 years ago, but I just finished making my own and used them this last week. It's really not too bad!

Also, if you are pro-cloth pad, check out goods4girls.org -- they are coordinating the donation of cloth pads to organizations in Africa.

More women need to seriously know about alternatives. Screw putrid white when I can have COLORS!
I'm a full converter. My total stash is 17, and I got all of them from Etsy! Just search "Cloth Menstrual Pads" to see!

They aren't really hard to wash and care for.. Please consider buying at least ONE cloth pad and see how it is like. There are other alternatives such as the "Menstrual Cup" which is a suction cup, and has very very little cleanup.

I'm so glad Cloth pads have been featured here. I have been waiting and dreaming of what it would be like. I have bookmarked this for love :D Thank You!

Also, if you'd like more information on Cloth Menstrual Pads, please visit: http://www.clothpads.org/ - Tons of information on how to make your own, and WHY you should make the switch.

Great article! Thank you for posting this.

I've been using washable flannel pads for years and would never willingly go back to disposables. Cotton pads are soft, comfortable, and makes me feel less dependent on mass marketed stuff.
