This week's Featured Buyer is the illustrious design blog duo that makes up Poppytalk.blogspot.com. The husband and wife team of Jan (graphic designer) and Earl (new media design/instructor) always manage to find the most cutting edge, "Why didn't I see that?" items that makes our collective Storque heart swoon. They even have a handmade market of their own, with many Etsy sellers represented! Without further ado, here is: Poppytalk.
Poppytalk is a Canadian design blog collecting inspiration and promoting emerging design talent. We initially started the blog to keep abreast of what was out there in the design world, and eventually realized the need and responsibility to highlight quality handmade goods in such a powerful forum as the internet. We feature an "Etsy Pick of the Day," where we highlight unique high quality handmade goods which we search for on Etsy! We also feature "Affordable Art" on a constant basis, and many of those pieces are also found on Etsy. We DIG the "Time Machine" on Etsy and use it almost daily to find the latest and greatest!
We love handmade and the importance of it in today's marketplace, so much so that we opened an online monthly virtual street market to showcase juried quality handmade goods called Poppytalk Handmade. Just like a real flea market, hand-picked participants rent out a virtual table on our site and sell their goods through their online stores. (Many of them based at Etsy!) Each month we will highlight a specific event, depending on the time of year. November's market features a "Holiday and Gift Themed Market." The creativity of some of the artists on Etsy is mind boggling. Here are a few items that are catching our eyes these days:
Player - signed fine art photograph by AliciaBock

Alicia creates photographs that really do what she strives to create: "memories of our favorite days."
Best Wishes Bag (Wishbones not included) by somethingshidinginhere

For original and unique, cool handmade things, somethingshidinginhere is awesome! Their Best Wishes Bag and Wishbones were such a hit this past summer with the Renegade Craft Fair, and luckily they opened an Etsy shop after all the online hoopla about them! Now we can all access these fun little trinkets along with all their other amazing goods here without having to travel to a craft fair!
Tile Starmite by CircaCeramics

Being huge fans of the print gocco world and ceramics, we came across the beautiful work of CircaCeramics here at Etsy a while back (via the gocco flickr group) and their fun gocco printed pieces of retro images, such as this cute tile of a starmite camera. The patterned background on this piece especially stands out. And Andy and Nancy just seem like really nice, cool people!

We love polaroids and this image by equivoque, named Blue, is mesmerizing. The color and composition takes you there.
Pretty Purse Three by skinnylaminx

skinnylaminx is an amazing printmaker and crafty artist. I just noticed her rescued embroidered pieces from car boot sales she goes to in Cape Town, South Africa and turns them into these pretty little purses. There are so many good things happening at Etsy with ideas to recycle and reuse.
2008 Letterpress Calendar by paperedtogether

There are so many great letterpressed items on Etsy that it's hard to just pick one, but we love everything about this 2008 Desktop Calendar by paperedtogether. The choice and placement of fonts along with the graphics make it a favorite.
Antler Card 2 Pack by ohmycavalier

Going back to gocco printing, these Antler Cards by ohmycavalier really pull you in. It's the simplicity and space used that sets them apart.
Knitware Bowl by alyssaettinger

Give us a knitted bowl anytime over a regular smooth one. Alyssa Ettinger's pottery is so cozy and inviting. Beautifully handmade, textural pieces.
Comfy Chairs Fabric Circle by TheCupcakeGirls

Also, we can't resist The Cupcake Girls! Gocco-ing fun things like chairs and trucks to fabric and paper, then framing them in embroidery hoops. Always fun to see what they are going to come up with next.
La Noche Esta Oscura by ditazol

You can't see it in this photo, put this print is actually printed on textured wallpaper, giving this unique illustration more depth and interest. ditazol is from Santiago de Chile. That's what's so unique about Etsy: so many artists brought together that one wouldn't normally know about.
Knit XXXVII - Mixed Media by shoofly

A clever design by goshdarnknit artist, Rania Hassan. She has such a fascination with knitting and love for painting. Such an inspiring piece on many different levels.
Microcluster Vase by guymichaeldavis

Another fairly new ceramist on our radar is Guy Michael Davis. His microscope graphics on different shaped ceramics are so interesting and unique. He also has some amazing sculptural pieces in his portfolio.
You'll Be Sorry When I'm Gone by LilyMoon

This piece says so much. It always amazes us when so much emotion and storytelling can be brought to an illustration. Lily Moon's pieces are so dreamy and whimsical.
Wood Holiday Banner by smallstump

We can hardly wait to hang our Wood Holiday Banner from smallstump. This little company out of Pacifica, California has the best stuff and we could make a list this long with everything we want from them.
Vintage Shopper - Clarissa by showpony

showpony out of Glasgow makes these canvas totes with a twist. Images of vintage handbags screenprinted onto organic cotton shopping bags: genius.
You Rule in 2008 Calendar by thegreatlakes

The Great Lakes have a unique style sense. Combining illustrations with double colored graphics in surprising colors, they bring the unexpected to their papergoods. We love this You Rule in 2008 Calendar.

Squirrel Notebook from local Vancouverite, Cabin + Cub. These are very sweet and well made.
Guinea Warrior Print by jdryerart

We love the way this product is shown as a style shot. (In the detail photos.)
Never a Dull Passport Case no. 45 by stiksel

Anything that combines vintage photos, handwriting, stitching and cursive fonts has a soft spot in our hearts. And stiksel out of the Netherlands makes these Never a Dull Passport Cases to fill our travel dreams with style.
