Handmade Portraits: Topsy Turvy Design
Article Header Image
Milliner Kim Dye of Topsy Turvy Design has always had a passion for history. From a young age she built elaborate sets and costumes, in an attempt to recreate the bygone eras she'd read about in books. Nowadays, her handmade hats channel this passion and combine her interest in theater, costume, puppetry and architecture. She dreams of the day when everyone will return to dressing up for every occasion with hat and gloves. However, for now she makes do constructing beautifully anachronistic hats for burlesque and circus performers, and the occasional fashion daredevil.

Etsy sent independent filmmakers Anne Alvergue and her husband Michael Isabell, aka milorocks, to visit Kim at her home and studio in Oakland, California. (See Anne and Michael's film production company's site, EyeSpyFilms, for more information on their work.)

A delightful look behind the scenes of a great art!

One of my favorite interviews to date! I adore Kims work, and the photography of her items is TO DIE FOR! Ever since I started travelling to London twice a year for my old job, I've become obsessed with hats (they really go all out at the clubs in London) and have even started wearing one or two out for special occasions.

Hi Kim,

I'm in awe of your art form... you seem really down-to-earth, and I appreciate that, considering how far you've come!

I have a couple questions... first, as a burgeoning artisan, how did you transition from a 9-5 job to doing your art full-time. How did you pay the bills? I ask this b/c I am building from the ground up... and sometimes I get discouraged, b/c crafting and creating requires some pretty intense money upfront - that which I do not have.

How do I get myself out there? How do I get beautiful models to model my stuff?

I am clueless, and you seem to have it all together...

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I would love to own one of your creations someday.

Hugs from the sauna that is the South,
Darlene

Simply stunning. Love it. I love the old world charm, it takes me back to the days of glam, beauty, and dress up. A time when ladies looked the part, and men just drooled. I'm a hat, glove, purse and boot, girl myself, thanks to my granny. It's all about the whole package. Love it. Pk
