Choosing an Autumn Color Scheme: Spice it Up or Cool it Down?

Vicki Dvorak from Simply Hue interpreted our Get the Look Decor series with her expert eye for color. With the turning of the seasons, your rooms may cry out for a change too. While a total revamp might be out of the question, Vicki has some tips for accent pieces. Vicki shares her inspiration for two different looks — and we want you to tell us whether you want to spice it up or cool it down in the comments below!

SPICE IT UP!
The colors in Jenn Ski's home are prefect for creating a sense of warmth.
With Autumn quickly approaching, you might be looking forward to some of the simple pleasures it brings. Colorful crunchy leaves underfoot, spicy hot cider, a roaring fire in the fireplace, or an excuse to spend lazy days indoors.

It's not practical for most of us to change our home's color scheme with the seasons, but we can always add a little fall color through rich warm accessories and home decor or by painting an accent wall in pumpkin, chocolate brown, or harvest gold. Another way to add warmth to your color scheme is through natural elements — bouquets of gold and orange flowers with tall leafy branches or apple cinnamon candles surrounded by autumn potpourri. Think about putting new pillow covers in red, orange, gold, or brown over your existing pillows and switch out your area rugs for inexpensive versions in earth tones.

Warm colors such as red, gold, orange, and brown make a home feel cozy, alive, and welcoming! Is this the feeling you want to create in your rooms this fall?

Here are some of the items from our Warm Colors Inspiration Board:

"A Garden Party" Photograph by irenesuchocki, $30.

"Keep Calm and Carry On" Framed Print in Chocolate Brown from derder, $18.

Mother of Pearl Mosaic Pot
by Sigmosaics, $23.

Orange and Brown Print Pillow by MARIESCOSYCUSHIONS, $20.

Bubble Chain Gold/Sand Tea Towel by 5oclockcrows, $26.

Heritage of Gold Pillow Cover
by TheHomeCentric, $17.45.

COOL IT DOWN!
The lavender filled home of Abigail Ahern is an example of a soothing, airy environment.
If a warm, earthy color scheme is not for you, maybe you can go for a cooler palette. Cool colors such as greens, blues, and purples are tranquil and make your home feel relaxing and peaceful. Use lighter versions of these colors (aqua marine, sky blue, or lavender) for a serene palette; if you're feeling bolder,  use richer complements such as avocado green, cobalt blue, and eggplant. Have you ever noticed the cooler color schemes used in most hospitals or spas... two places where you definitely want to feel relaxed?

We were drawn to the hues of these items in our Cool Colors Inspiration Board, but aren't the textures wonderful as well?

Small Scallop Bowl by elementclaystudio, $98.

Perennial Moment Illustration by papermoth, $18.

Coral Adornment Pillow by TheHomeCentric, $21.45.

Modern Urban Drumshade and Lamp  by shadethatlamp, $34.95.

Purple Antique Bottle  from PleasingToTheEye, $6.

White Pipette Pillow by missmosh, $36.

Etsy shops offer such a huge variety of home decor options in both warm and cool colors. So what do you prefer? WARM and WELCOMING or COOL and RELAXING? Let us know in the comments!

Warm it up is my "autumn-style"...just makes everything so cozy and inviting. The golds, oranges, and reds make me want to drink some hot apple cider while catching up on summer stories with friends (theoretically speaking as it is almost 80 degrees in Milwaukee, WI today!).

Very inspiring!

Aug. 8, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. TenderLetters

Autumn can't come soon enough!

Aug. 8, 2009 at 12:54 p.m. KatsaraYarns

Nice job and I'll suggest taking another step toward creating a truly vital, sophisticated color statement with these two thematic hues: Combine them in imbalanced proportions. Sticking with a monochromatic theme is certainly safe, but result in a static, corporate look. I encourage creating a bit more energy with a careful balancing of accenting colors.

On the color wheel, cool lavenders and warm orange-rusts are two-thirds of a triadic scheme. If you prefer warm tones like the oranges, add an accent of the cool lavender to add a fabulous dimension, and vice versa if you prefer cool lavenders -- by adding a touch of the rusty-orange, you will have something sublime.

I like your suggestions, Katsara. I notice you have some beautiful yarn in your shop that has a combination of these two color schemes. Thanks for your input!

Beautiful

Aug. 8, 2009 at 6:49 p.m. lshewring

Gorgeous ideas Vicki! That lavender and silver scheme is unbelievable!!! So lovely!!!

Aug. 8, 2009 at 10:22 p.m. MeadowbelleMarket

Purple may be my all time favorite color, but I was leaning towards the warm tones that remind me of the crisp autumn leaves...
However, I can't help but LOVE Andria's idea of adding a touch of purple. Those two colors really can share in one space (and I guess I'm used to sharing ;)

Beautiful colors!

Aug. 9, 2009 at 11:07 a.m. MeghanT

After living in the Caribbean for 4 years I developed an eye for bold rich color in my designs. To your query I says "Spice it up!" I love a dramatic color scheme and my eyes really like that single red wall in the apartment.

Then again...sometimes to temper my enthusiasm and passion I need a more mellow environment. Your "Cool it down" lavender toned home by home of Abigail Ahern would be my inspiration if I were to redo my bedroom. I need a soothing retreat at the end of a creatively intense day!

Aug. 9, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. blendastudio
